Google hasn't helped - does anyone know were we can find the recipes?  It's always difficult because the season numbers are different for the PBS shows.  I really want to try Sarah Janes chocolate/cherry/marzipan loaf.  Three of my favorite flavors!

I am sad to see Sarah Jane gone from my TV. I really like her a lot. I also enjoy Cathryn and I believe (although it goes by so fast I can hardly catch it) that twice now she has said, "Pants!" as a curse. Love that so much! I regularly use "bloody" like a Brit, but that's a fairly common usage in Canada.

The pants exclaimation made me rewind.  I didn't think it was possible I heard that correctly...pants!?!?  But I did and I LOVE IT!!!!!

Stub my toe...PANTS!

Cake crumbles when icing it...PANTS!

Molten chocolate puddings fall off the tray onto my super cute turquoise Converse...PANTS, PANTS, DOUBLE PANTS!!!!

Neither Mary or Paul commented on James' alcoholic jellies.

I don't remember Paul saying anything, but I think Mary said she actually thought they were too much, or something along those lines.

I was distracted for a good portion of the episode trying to get a good look at Cathryn's sweater to see if it was hand-knit (I think so, and very pretty).

Yes, she did. I believe they were one element of the finished dish, not a separate condiment, and for Mary the effect was too strong. (Even though everyone jokes about putting in plenty of booze to keep her happy.)

Same here! When Sue was tasting them earlier, she reacted to their strength, as well. She practically keeled over.

This just makes me want to try one even more. lol

Tamal says pants in one of his talking heads.

National Doughnut (or donut) Day is in June.  This started to get some play in the news a few years ago, or at least that's when I first noticed, and they would do stories on the doughnut dollies.  So I was somewhat familiar with that, but I never knew they were so close to the front lines.  Damn.  And I watched China Beach when it was on, but I don't remember the doughnut dollies on that show.

Anyways, I'm not a huge doughnut fan, but when one is warm fresh from the fryer - yum!  I was also a bit disappointed that Sarah Jane didn't score any points for hers looking so nice.  Both hers and Ryan's were underbaked, but Ryan's looked awful - shape, color, no discernable sugar on top.

I could tell Ryan, Sarah Jane and John (of the bloody hand) were all at risk this episode.  They are all rather inconsistent, maybe scoring a hit on one of the three bakes for the last few episodes, but really failing on the other two.  The other bakers have been more consistent.

What season did the showstoppers start becoming real showstoppers?

It's so hard to determine these things because the season numbers in Britain don't correspond with those in the US.  I am perpetually confused!

Embarrassing confession here. Every time they show those adorable fat sheep I try to make a "baaaa" noise. I also squeal "cute bunny!" every time they showed the little bunny this ep.

Same. My daughter and I always watch together and we do the "baaa" every time too. And comment on the ducks. And bunnies. And any other animals they show. So you're definitely not alone. It just adds to the charm of the show.

Re: the sheep ^^. I'm a knitter, so every time I see the sheep, I mentally say to myself "pre-sweaters. "

(which is really dumb as I've  never knitted a sweater)

Doughnuts! Definitely loved seeing what they came up with. Love the history info my grandpa was one of the many American soldiers over there and no doubt eating doughnuts.  it was great hearing about the Doughnut Dollies women have done so much especially in wars without recognition. It really sucks. They deserve to be recognized and honored.  Sorry to see Sarah-Jane go, it was the right choice but they are all so likable its hard to see them go.

I’m pretty sure it’s in the talking heads at the beginning of the episode after Ian won StarBaker for the third time.

Thanks.  I have that one on the DVR.

Honestly none of the donuts looked good to me but then I get heartburn just thinking about eating a big lump of fried dough.

Big ol' lumps of fried dough sound wonderful to me, but I'm not fond of donuts with jam.

Ha-- jam gets in the way of the lumps of fried dough!

I like cream-filled donuts, but not jam-filled, and prefer glazed or iced donuts with no filling. Buttermilk Drops are my all-time favorite, and were my son's first taste of a sweet food when he was a little less than a year old.

I saw a story that mentioned Doughnut Dollies on some show (Food: Fact or Fiction, maybe), where they were investigating if American soldiers in Europe were called Dough Boys because of the doughnut (they weren't). I'm glad that we are seeing some of these history lessons again; always found them interesting in later, but previously-aired, series.

I will miss Sarah Jane, but she seemed to spend at least the last couple of weeks anticipating being sent home, and I think that affected her performance. She is adorable and seems very sweet. Ryan was wildly inconsistent and hung on for another couple of weeks thanks to 1 pie, albeit an evidently incredible pie, but 1 pie nonetheless. And John's injured finger, but mostly the pie. I'll miss his dry sense of humor & seeing his adorable daughter.

I noticed that on this episode Cathryn used a favorite British "substitute oath" -- "Oh, my g-iddy aunt" in place of "Oh, my G-od." I find it so endearing somehow.

I live for “bum’s your uncle” and am trying to find a good place to try it out!

Are you sure it's not "Bob's your uncle"? That's the traditional saying I've heard. (The closed captioning often gets such things remarkably wrong.) I'm also fond of "Job's a good 'un."

I'm pretty sure it's "Bob".  I've heard that in many British shows.

The closed captioning can be unintentionally hilarious at times!

I’ve heard both-don’t know if they use both, but I watch a lot of British shows and have heard Bob and Bum

yeah on another show I watch, they captioned "when you've come to heel" as "when you've come to heal" which made zero sense in the show. Took me a moment (since I rely heavily on CC).

Forgive my dumb question, but how are you seeing GBBO right now on US TV?  I’m desperate to watch — I love this show.

In my area, which is KPBS San Diego, it's on PBS 2 Friday nights at 9 PM. And then they repeat the episode Monday nights at 10 PM on PBS 1.  However, as far as I know this season is ending in a couple of weeks and PBS has been only showing it in the summer.

I also watch any available seasons on netflix - usually multiple times, ha!

I really want to watch the post BBC series - somebody buy the rights already! Grumble. Grumble.

I LOVE the nature shots. They camera crew on this show are amazing. Between the food porn and the English Countryside porn, this show is a joy to behold, even without the sweetest contestants on any competition show ever.

They used to show a squirrel during one of the seasons that was lets say quite blessed in a certain area.  I couldn't help giggle and blush every time that squirrel was on.

I've never heard of them either, & it was really interesting, I bet their stories would make a great movie.

I know these original comments are from almost a year ago, but I hope you'll get a notification for this reply:  I just read a new novel called "The Beantown Girls" by Jane Healey, which is about the Red Cross Clubmobiles and "Doughnut Dollies" in Europe in World War 2.  I highly recommend it!  (And I was thrilled to see Sue's story about them!)

The town in which I live has a "heritage days" parade every year, and every year someone dresses up as the (supposed original) WWI Salvation Army doughnut girl. And if you arrive early enough you can get a freshly fried doughnut.

WRT women in wartime, I used to hang out with a woman who was in the WAVES in WWII (the Navy recruited women for its stateside operations when most personnel were overseas). She was incredibly proud of the work she had done.

I, too, talk to the animals. I tried to get my bunny-loving hound excited about the bunny on screen but she was fast asleep.
