Jeopardy! Season 34 (2017-2018)

How strange that once again Jeopardy! was eerily similar to real life with the census category, but also was anyone else unsettled by the rest of the category titles in the Jeopardy! round?

In other news, another instaget FJ, even if I hated the category title again, some more.  Hidden Figures was SUCH a good movie.

It was excellent.  I didn't even mind Kevin Costner.  Definitely an instaget FJ for me.  But what was middle woman thinking with that FJ bet?  Other than that, I would have been okay with any of them winning.

TS I got include seven, Spamalot, The Lone Ranger, squid, lynching, and Zane Grey.  Once upon a time, I drove a Chevy Spectrum, and name it Roy, as in Roy G. Biv, so the colors in white light was an easy one for me.  Also, whales are mammals, not cephalopods, and slugs (or snails or whatever he said) are gastropods, not cephalopods.  Science can be your friend!

Hidden Figures is a great film, and I just finished reading the book last week.

Got lots of TS/missed DD: Chicano, Van Buren, Continental Army, seven (colors), Spamalot, Lone Ranger, lynching, Zane Grey, and Mughal.

I missed the first half of Jeopardy round so didn't see but a few of the category titles. I will have to catch up on YouTube.

I got Lone Ranger. I mean really, "Hi ho, Silver, a-WAY!" I also thought clearcutting for deforestation, but I was one letter short. Close, but no cigar as the pundits say.

I saw the movie "300" four times before I bought the DVD, and I have the real movie poster that was taken from a bus in Lisbon. Maybe that's why instead of coming up with Leonidas I right away pictured Gerard Butler. (Not a bad image, BTW.)

I've never seen a pic of Zane Grey, but one wasn't needed because of the way-too-easy clue. Plus Zane's suit was from an earlier era than what Louis L'Amour would be wearing.

I've not seen Hidden Figures nor have I read the book, but FJ was a no brainer instaget just because I pay attention. Yeay, I broke my FJ Curse.

I'm glad one person dorked out on the FJ bet as I was not up for another one of those buzz-off tie breakers.

Oh, add this to the Trebek drinking game: When he says "I wondered why you left that category" when a player returns to that column and the next clue is the DD. Like they knew it was there so changed categories. Of course they did.

Congrats To Emily on the Win!

Instant FJ.

Man this has been a week of bad wagering in FJ and has cost three players the win well really 2 cause we don't know if Shannon would had beaten Emily or not in the tie breaker but geez you atleast gotta try and win and she just played for 2nd place.

I thought they would have known the answer ‘trigger’. I also got a few others so it wasn’t a bad night (Chicano, Lone Ranger, Squid, Lynching and Zane Grey) for me. FJ was an instaget. Good to see Emily bet big.

I’m kind of glad that Alex (far right contestant) didn’t win. I didn’t like his answer of “good restraints” when Alex T asked him about that puff of air during an eye exam.

I wonder if Emily is a fun or boring nanny.

I'm happy for Emily (fellow Michigander)...and I'll bet she's a fun nanny.  I liked all three contestants...but wouldn't have minded getting to look at Alex one more time...he sure is purty.

Well, gee, I guess I'm the only one who doesn't like Emily.  She's such a milquetoast.  Darn it, Shannon!  Bet it all when you're tied going into FJ.  What's the worst that can happen?  You lose if you're wrong?  Better than getting it right and losing because of a bad wager.  I thought it was cool that Alex was an animal ophthalmologist.

I got mortgage, 7, The Lone Ranger, and Zane Grey.

FJ was an instaget.  I've never seen the movie or read the book yet (It's in my TBR pile), but I remember reading about those ladies.

Here's a weird question.  Does Jeopardy! start at an odd time for anyone else?  Instead of starting at 6:00 pm, it starts at 5:58 pm.  Tonight it started even earlier so I missed the first two categories.  Highly annoying.

Nope right there with you. She grates my nerves.

For TS I got chicano, mortgage, Continental army, The Lone Ranger, and lynching. FJ was an instaget. It would have been nice if the category were something like "Government Agencies" or "Scientific Pioneers". Her achievements transcend racial boundaries -- she's freakin' brilliant.

Me three.

I also thought she shouldn't have been credited with "sportsmanlike"--the clue specifically asked for a "quality"--that's a noun, not an adjective.  Goes back to my old POS (part of speech) rule--you shouldn't get credit unless you answer with the right part of speech.  Don't get me started on SAP (singulars and plurals).  I'm gonna be a barrel of fun in the old-age home someday.

I started dreaming up an eye chart for dogs, but this being the Internet, I figured there probably already is one.  Actually, there are lots.  Here's one I liked:

I usually don't like or dislike contestants - they're just vessels for the clues to be revealed - and, continuing that trend, I didn't notice Emily last night, but tonight I quite liked her for some reason.

If anyone had missed FJ, I'd have thrown something at the TV.

The mortgage TS was my surprise for the night.  The Lone Ranger and lynching, too, but that's the one that had me saying, "Really?" aloud.

I was distracted during the first round. I hate when I'm not paying attention.

TSs I got were The Lone Ranger, the trigger, lynching, and Zane Grey. Instead of squid, I said octopus. I knew it was one or the other. I also got the DD of Spamalot. I mean, come one -- fish-slapping?

FJ was pretty easy. All I needed was Katherine's name. I can't remember if there was anything in the clue to lead you to NASA if you hadn't seen the movie or read the book.

I thought the questions in the (timely) census category were pretty interesting.

Did Alex really respond "He's the one" to the Billy Jean King question?

I missed this question since I missed the first part of the show. What was the question/clue? Because there's Michael Jackson's Billy Jean and then there's Billy Jean King, one of my idols. Both very different!

That dog eye chart is hysterical Mondianyone. My dogs could spot the squirrel in the very last line. We're not "fans" of that varmint.

That was Trebek being a smart ass again. Dog eye checks aren't done with a "puff of air." Eye exams are called CERFs (Canine Eye Registry Foundation) and are done in a darkened room 30 minutes after eye drops are put in. The ophthalmologist shines a light in each eye while the dog is being held steady by its owner or an assistant. The doctor can thus diagnose as many as 10 eye diseases ranging from not that important to this dog should not be bred to this dog needs further testing such as a gonioscopy.  CERF clinics are regularly done at dog shows and used to cost $20-$25 per dog, but this year I've seen them for $35-$40 per dog. Eye checks should be done yearly. My dogs have always tested clear, but I always ask the doctor if he's seen bad eyes and the answer is always a very depressing yes.

There aren't that many canine ophthalmologists so my ears perked up when I heard that player was one. Wow zowie, I'd love to have one in my life. Most are connected to university veterinary schools. I do work with a breed that now has a DNA test for glaucoma. So yeah, I know a lot about dog eye checks. And now so do any of you who made it through these two paragraphs.

I had mortgage, Lone Ranger, and Spamalot.  Hidden Figures was a phenomenal movie and made for an incredibly easy FJ.

If you're tied going into FJ and you don't bet it all, you're betting against yourself.  And you deserve to lose.

Thanks, Saber--that was very interesting.  I had one dog that lived long enough to develop cataracts and another that had entropion, where the lids curl into the eyeball, but neither one needed to see a specialist.  You just taught me a lot.  I suspect that Alex might be affiliated with the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, which is the veterinary powerhouse in NYC, but I haven't checked yet.  I thought he seemed like a very nice guy.

Cataracts are common in older dogs and in later stages can be seen by a "regular" veterinarian. Most of the time they do not change the dog's behavior, at least in my experience. In young dogs, that's another thing altogether (spay/neuter/do not breed). Entropion is very common in poodles ... like the one in your avatar. I especially have seen it in Standards.

I haven’t had the puff or air test in a long time — my ophthalmalogist uses a little device that looks like a pen, and touches it to my eyeball.  Creepy as hell, but more accurate than the old-fashioned puff of air.

Also, “good restraints” generally just mean someone’s holding the animal.  You want good restraints just for taking a dog’s temperature!

My female cat needs "good restraints" for a nail trim. It usually takes 3 of us, me and two vet techs - one with clippers, one holding Stella tightly and me presenting the foot to be trimmed.

ETA: Yeah, J! starts a bit early here, too. If I decide to watch an old Dawson Family Feud on the Buzzer network instead of Wheel, by the time Dawson signs off, all the categories have already been presented on J!

Thank you for those two paragraphs. I have had dogs but consider myself to be a cat person (or I am the cat’s person) but didn’t like the idea that dogs had to be heavily restrained to get their eye exam done. I’m relieved to hear that it’s more of what you speak of. I learn a lot from everyone and thanks.

True, but it's easy to know what categories you suck at, and people tend to bet with that in mind.  I wish to hell I had instead of stupidly betting big on a category I was weak in.

I've read both. Loved Zane Grey, though I couldn't tell you a single title except for Riders of the Purple Sage. I hated Louis L'Amour. I couldn't get very far in his books because I was always itching to edit  what I thought was abysmal writing. So L'Amour didn't even occur to me until you mentioned him.

I'm with you on the flying snakes, there are so many freaky species. Planet Earth is a great series, but it is also nightmare producing sometimes.

That is true for me in so many categories! And for some odd reason, when it comes to art, my brain always wants to say "Calder" when it's Pollock, and vice versa - even though their work is nothing alike.

I've never seen or heard of a dog that didn't just sit there and let the vet shine that bright light in his/her eyes. Have never seen or heard of one try to leave. None of my dogs have needed a gonioscopy or tonometry so I've never seen them done. They are sometimes done at specialty shows for certain breeds pre-disposed for glaucoma; otherwise, they are done at the vet "eye" hospital.

I've seen the flying snakes on nature shows, the ones that climb trees, then "leap" or "fly" into/onto another tree, or the ground. I had my own flying snake experience last summer when I was pitching hay off of one of those big round bales of hay that stand more than six feet tall. I was forking hay off the side when a snake came out of the middle of the bale and, quite literally, flew through the air in front of me to get away. I think I screamed like a little girl.

It was just a garter snake, but a scared one, which enabled it to "fly." Ha ha. I discovered several snakes living in that bale, although only that one displayed airborne capabilities.

This entire portion of your post gave me the heebie-jeebies.  Snakes are 100% the creature I hate most on this earth.  If I had the experience you did - and all snakes are bad, harmless garter snakes or not - I would have burned the hay bale, set the ground on fire and left the state.

You'll get no judgement from me on that. I was a horse-crazy kid so read/watched anything that had cowboys/horses in it. My favorite western author is Will James. As a kid, I read his "Smokey The Cowhorse" every summer when I would visit my aunt and uncle on their mountain farm (where I got to ride a horse every day!). I was gifted the book when they passed away. He was far superior, IMO, to both Grey and L'amour.

I wonder if NASA would have given any recognition to Katherine Johnson if it weren't for the movie, and the movie being up for Academy Awards. (Personally, I think not.)

TS's I got were Lone Ranger - why didn't the other contestants ring in when Zorro was incorrect? - squid, trigger, lynching, and Zane Grey - like others have said, based more on his clothing than because I recognized his picture.

I got FJ because of an episode of Timeless which I enjoyed but for some reason don't watch anymore.  I see its second season just started a week or so ago.

I just watched the first part of yesterday's episode, so saw what I missed. I heard Trebek say, "SHE'S the one" after the correct answer of Billie Jean King, so that controversy can be put to rest. The "She's" was blurry, but it was there.

In the "Black" category, WTH with Black Beauty being the $1,000 answer. Maybe it's a horse thing, but that was barely worth $100.

Meanwhile, I checked on Dr. LoPinto (Pinto! All my horses and dogs are pintos!) and he works at Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group (VERG) in Brooklyn. He did a three-year residency at Tufts, where I have several friends. I'm going to ask if they knew him. Meanwhile, since we'll never see him again, here he is, his first and last appearance on a Jeopardy thread.
