Dorinda was independently wealthy from her own business. She also got money in her divorce from the first husband and got a ton of money when Richard passed away. The Berkshire property alone - look how beautiful the grounds are. The cost of landscaping maintenance is astronomical. This is not something you can fake by doing some work right before they film this show...it has to be painstakingly taken care of over a period of time as in all year. Dorinda has an apartment in the city...not the one on the show. I highly doubt that even a innocent schmo would pay the rent/HOA on an apartment but not be able to sleep there whenever he wants.

As for the dry cleaning business - I don't know how many outfits Dorinda could have borrowed from pieces being cleaned for a museum or the Met Gala. Sara Jessica Parker would jump her if she ever wore or tried to squeeze into one of her size 0 dresses.

I do however believe she uses John and John uses her. I don't think she wants ANY man as she is still in love with Richard. She wants a companion/not sexual to go to events/movies/dinner with. She uses him as a buffer so that crazy Ramona doesn't drag her out to manhunt, or so that when she does she's not interested cause she is already dating someone.

John, I don't see as a poor innocent Schmo. He took advantage. He is pushing for more. He knows she is still in love with Richard.

 

The minister that married my husband and I was like this.  His wife had died several years prior and he had since gotten a girlfriend in his building. My husband thought it was hilarious that this older guy had a girlfriend (the minister even referred to her as his girlfriend).  I asked my husband why once and he said it was just weird.  I told him that it sometimes is about companionship. I think Carole is similar too. Both are still in love with their husbands. Their relationships now aren't serious or really moving towards anything serious.  It is just about companionship.

And yep, set apartment.  The co-ops are really giving them issues in NY.

I think Carole is more emotionally vested with Adam than she wants people to think. I think going in she chose him for the reasons you said because it would be a relationship that wouldn't have a future. Somewhere along the way she has fallen for him.

Thanks to The Mole for the info!  I think it's interesting that from what you saw/wrote, Sonja's viciousness was edited out.  I think Sexy J earned what she got.  If you're saying publicly that someone else's relationship is coke-based and they are trashy and tacky and beneath you, someone else publicly saying incredibly nasty stuff about your sessy times cannot be a surprise.  Sonja's Who Me? I'm Tragic and Wasted shtick would get real old with a quickness for a lot of people if they were reading her shitting on them constantly and then lying about it.  She's a liar.  She's getting more of what she deserves over time.  I imagine her ex having his great-great-great grandchildren show him how his DVR works and laughing at her weekly as he enjoys a bowl of Werther's Originals and a lukewarm mug of Postum.

And yeah, Sonja told Tinsley while walking to Luann's newly renovated and fairly new house for brunch that she would "meet" Lu's famously fuckedaround ex at their (presumably other, years prior, different town) Hamptons house and be with Lu's kids.  She used the present tense and the past tense in the same sentence.   Um.  I know Lu is an ass-ache but come on!   I would feel feelings -- not good ones -- if a psychoticly competitive woman who was literally fired from a job for husband-frottaging kept saying stuff on camera of that ilk, that she was "taking care of" my family in my absence.  Unless I'd actually died, and even in that instance, I would have to haunt my husband from The Great Beyond, It's Hot In Here division, and tell him to play very safely and to not give her any PINs and not let her ever load the dishwasher or handle laundry...

A lot of interesting stuff about John and Dorinda.   I do imagine she's in the relationship because they care about each other.  I imagine she is in mourning.   I can't imagine what she felt, and to be honest, hers is the widow's tale I'm curious about.  Dorinda found what sounds like intense love  in middle age, and it was cut brutally short. She's rough at times and it is hard to imagine her chemistry with a nerdy econ brain, but there seems to be a lot to Dorinda - her pride in how she got the Berkshires home, the obvious wealth that goes into that place, the prickly but loving relationship with her daughter, who did well enough in school to get into Johns Hopkins.     It's an intriguing story for me.

I don't think Bethenny's insinuations last season that Sonja and John are heavy into cocaine use was a knee jerk reaction, or retaliation for John " coming for her business"-- she spilled some hot tea. However, it was poor form for Bethenny, as she has many secrets of her own. 

I believe Dorinda truly cares for John, but realizes he is not made of the same stuff as her deceased husband. She cares for him enough to stay with him, spend time with him, and share a bed during sleepovers but not enough to agree to being full time partners. He embarrasses her, but has enough to offer that she keeps him around.

I think Bethenny has a cruel streak, its almost, I'm not happy or content, so you can't be. I can't take to motormouth.

I  think your description of Dorinda and John is right. I think she still has Richard in her heart, but slowly, she will move on.

Rewatching in prep for the new season. Things I've rediscovered this ep: Carole is the worst kind of snowflake. Unable to interface with a person who might not just bow to her opinion and act like a sycophant. I know it's Ramona, so it's the worst example, but still. I sort of delight in watching her meltdown, because she acts so smug and superior. There are a lot of women who I'd want to comfort after that election - Carole with her sanctimonious attitude isn't one of them. There were plenty of people with a lot to lose who had reason to be scared by the election outcome. Carole was just concerned about validating her own opinion and proving others wrong. She hasn't been a journalist in years. Shut it.

Dorinda's a straight-up gangster. Good for her. After awhile you can't just stay quiet. Some people who word vomit everywhere need to be put in their place.

Never realized until now that was Candace Bushnell. How has it taken her this many years to get on the show?

Ramona's downward spiral was imminent and looking back, you can see it coming like a freight train. 

Sonja's delusional and off her rocker but I just can't quit her. She's bawdy and funny and I think she's the most naturally beautiful housewife.

OH, Tins. Can't help but like her. I watched too much GG to feel otherwise. She's so cute and sweet.
