3girlsforus March 19, 2018 Share March 19, 2018 WTF!! That is so not burbees. That’s standing up from the ground. Got to love her caption: Burpees & sit-ups (and burpees & sit-ups). When you try a physical exercise and it doesn’t look anything like what it’s “supposed” to, remember that all bodies are different—not only in size, but in capabilities. Do it how YOU can; you’re getting the same benefits even if it doesn’t look as “good.” #MyBigFatFabLife #NoBodyShame Uh no - that’s not how it works. If laying down and standing up had the same benefit as doing burpees then no one would bust their ass doing burpees. polandspring March 19, 2018 Share March 19, 2018 Considering the amount of time Whitney spends in sports bras, you would think she would know how to pick a good one. I've noticed while watching the show that she only wears the stretchy, structureless, $10 at Walmart variety. You can see how badly they perform in the videos where she's jumping in and out of the rope ladder. TLDR I want to help Whitney find a good bra. 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4158528

That's how toddlers stand up. Get up on all fours. Walk your hands toward you until you are starting to go more upright. Stand up. There was one post response on FB that I agree with. Some kiss ass said 'Moving is what matters'. And yes - I will agree that for a woman her size any kind of activity is an improvement. I haven't seen many episodes of 600lb life but I did see one where Dr. No was cheering a woman who took 3 steps with a walk. She'd been bedridden for years. But again she forfeits any kind of legitimate kudos by claiming she's doing actual exercises. Those are not burpees, push-ups, sit-ups, or anything other than standing up, sitting down, and rocking back and forth. If she would just admit that is what she's currently capable of and then as she improves show videos of her improving, then I would be much less apt to snark. Missed opportunity: she could have put "Yakety Sax" as the background music. What a joke. Wow, if not for the text, I'd never guess that was supposed to be a burpee. I'd love to see it slower. For the record when I was starting this weight loss journey at 248 lbs (same height as Whit), there was too much of me in the way to do a proper burpee, hence my hatred of them. It bothered me so much that I couldn't do them simply because my fat belly was in the way. Now, with most of that extra me gone, I can do them, even with the pushup. Also do them one-legged in the TRX straps. Still hate them, but I can do them. And the box squats one from the other day annoyed me because the box is there for you to lightly touch so you know where you're aiming, she sat on it, rocked back with feet off the floor and rocked back up. Edited because I missed this whole page, thanks for the slow down tdanaher - not sure what in the heck bringing the bottom part of the legs is for. LookABird March 19, 2018 Share March 19, 2018 (edited) 7 hours ago, 3girlsforus said: This is so true. It reminds me of what I thought when one of the gang said Whitney is so competitive when she was trying to finish the walk. No - no she’s not competitive. If she was competitive she would have worked hard BEFORE the race. That is what competitive people do. They want to succeed and put in the effort to make sure it happens. Entitled people assume if they believe they “deserve” to succeed, they will. So when they don’t, they blame everyone but themselves. My daughter was a competitive gymnast (a brutal sport that does not reward everyone) and there was a sign on the wall of the gym with the Lombardi quote “perfect practice makes perfect”. Competitive people put in that perfect practice. There is no glory during that hard work but that is what is required. If Whitney wanted to cross that finish line without being held up on both sides 2 hours after everyone else, she had to put in the effort before she got there. But she feels that even though she can’t fully care for herself and considers walking up 5 stairs an accomplishment, she deserved to finish that race because she’s entitled to be fat without any negative repercussions. Anyone who worked hard to finish the race in a more reasonable manner is just bowing to “body shame” and should be looked down on. I think what she is displaying in an event like the "8K" and in her videos of gym exercising is not competitive behavior. She has an addiction to checking items off her list. She pushes and pushes to get the exercise done so she can put a checkmark next to it. Watch her lift weights. It's not done with attention to form or improvement; it's just a "get it done," add it to my list of "achievements" and move on. tdanaher March 19, 2018 Share March 19, 2018 I'm not a person who infuriates easily, but I edge towards infuriation when I just noticed that in a real burpee, you conclude the individual rep by doing a sort of modified jumping jack which, you know, involves jumping off the ground while throwing hands up in the air. All Whit does is raise her arms in a Rocky pose. So what was the purpose of that video she did where she was "learning" to jump into the air even a couple of inches with the help of a pullup bar? You're supposed to build on your increasing strength and ability, not just say, "Well, did a few pullups, mission accomplished." 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4158783
Ketzel March 19, 2018 Share March 19, 2018 (edited) Will Powell, what the hell is going on in your gym? Are you even watching what your daughter is doing with Whitney? Leaving aside the appropriateness of the workouts (and believe me, that took a mighty shove!) it seems as if Jessica hasn't even noticed that Whitney cheats in every way she can, her form is almost always poor and, at least judging from the videos Whitney posts, Jessica doesn't properly spot her, doesn't check her and doesn't say anything to her other than "great job!" Back in the olden times, when I was dancing competitively and working out with a trainer so often and so hard that I eventually said, 'what the heck" and got an ACE certification to be a personal trainer myself, there would always be some people in the gym pretending to work out like Whitney does. They were never working out very hard; they were just working hard to convince other people they were working out very hard. We used to call what they were doing "face training." I admire and support people who are facing powerful challenges, like morbid obesity and/or addiction and who have decided to fight the good fight.. It's easy to tell when someone is sincere in their efforts, and is putting in the work with their ultimate goal in mind. What is Whitney doing screwing around at the gym? Refusing to make weight loss a goal? Refusing to make significant changes in her eating habits? Her "official" goal is diabetes prevention, but her actions make it clear that she is only going to do it on "her" terms, which means she isn't going to do a damn thing that's actually necessary, only what she chooses to do for only as much and as long as she chooses to do it. And only so long as she is amply rewarded by her cheering section, whether it's her Facebook fans or her doting parents, or her young and inexperienced trainer who has no idea how to manage this incredibly difficult client. Is Whitney doing any consistent cardio at all? Is she monitoring her heart rate? Sorry for the rant. Watching Whitney go from "dancer" to "gym rat" literally makes me nauseated. I've been both and I know what it takes and she is a poseur of the most obnoxious type, to me. Pachengala March 19, 2018 Share March 19, 2018 I'm late to the subject, but wanted to weigh in on that WaPo article. I think the author really bit off more than she can chew here, conflating issues that really aren't correlates: diversity of race, age, etc. and making workouts "accessible." Offering scholarships, pay-as-you-can nights, etc. are admirable and *could* increase your audience in a diverse and inclusive way, and that's admirable. It should absolutely be a goal. I'd love to read an article about these gyms' attempts to achieve this. HOWEVER. wanting to attract a more diverse crowd does not, and for these types of businesses, should not, mean necessarily making the class *physically* accessible to all. One of the major appeals of these classes should be that they challenge people, and make them stronger and fitter. I don't go to them because A) I can't afford it, but also because B) I'm not in that kind of shape and don't want that kind of challenge at this point. So I go to my gym, work out with weights and some cardio, and try to get stronger in a way that I'm comfortable with. I don't need them to dumb down a class just to suit my fitness level. I self-select out. No one's feelings are hurt, the end. I hope I'm being clear. It's one thing I'm very, very sensitive to: the actual struggle for diversity and inclusiveness, versus just lowering the bar so that everyone feels like they can "win." It's offensive to people who have to actually deal with discrimination on the basis of things they cannot change--race, age, gender--to pretend like being out of shape is in any way analogous to that struggle. They are DIFFERENT ISSUES ENTIRELY, and it's irresponsible of the author to pretend they are the same. On a totally different note, congratulations @SevenCostanza on fighting your way back to reclaim your life. You're inspiring! 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4158882

Her attachment to the "there's nothing wrong with being super morbidly obese and it doesn't limit me or negatively affect me in any way and I can compete with fit people who really are doing sports" belief is exactly why she gets the flak she does. I don't pretend I can do burpees like Scott Herman or Jeff Cavaliere. I don't hold myself out as an upper echelon runner or cyclist or weight lifter. I'm working my ass off to hopefully some day be better than aveage. If Shitney wants the praise for doing the exercises right and doing them well, then she needs to do them right and do them well. Or admit that she's super morbidly obese and that it means she can't do much, she's not athletic or active, she's definitely not a professional dancer, and there's nothing fabulous about it. 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4159176

Those sit ups are horrible she looks like she'll do more damage to herself doing the exercises this way, she's probably better off not doing them at all. 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4159309

Thank you Pachengala, it hasn't been easy but watching Whitney has helped me to not be a wimp and work through the pain. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4159330

Swimming would be good cardio & gives one a great feeling, but it's not so effective for wgt loss. I used to swim several laps -- mainly becuz I loved moving thru the water -- then perform some aqua exercises. Rinse & repeat until I went thru my whole program. It was wonderful. I really miss it. And Twit could walk miles in the water & not feel pain in her feet & legs. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4159409

Someone commented that she really needed the Benny Hill theme song as the soundtrack - I agree. SevenCostanza March 20, 2018 Share March 20, 2018 (edited) I've been reading some comments from earlier episodes, and I see that Whitney is also a pack a day smoker? Why was this never addressed on the show? No wonder she's always so winded just doing basic things, like walking. At her size that's like playing Russian roulette. I noticed in Season 1 when her mother is picking up her dirty plates from her room there were alot of wine bottles in there too. She needs some good therapy to deal with all her addictions. Also I don't believe everything is as loving with her family as they make it seem. She's got alot of issues and I'm sure a good portion of them come from her parents. Her father in particular comes off as a nag, she's always talking about what a perfectionist he is and how she hates to disappoint him. Her overeating could be her way of giving Dad the finger. I don’t know about every “boutique” gym but since he mentioned CrossFit, I do know the rules for the majority of them in this area (DC - where WashPost is). They have an intro program that everyone, regardless of fitness, is required to take. At the end of the class you are required to show proficiency or you can’t join the main program. You are welcome to continue in the intro course for as long as you want. I haven’t done it myself but I know a few who have and they all say the need to show proficiency was taken very seriously. So while ‘newbies’ are welcome, welcome doesn’t mean come in and do whatever you want. I don’t see any problem with that. They shouldn’t change the program so anyone can do it all from the start. What would be the point of that? Why would anyone join a gym that isn’t going to challenge and improve you? Heck, if you aren’t in shape enough to pass the proficiency, then the intro class is probably challenging to you. If you don’t like feeling like low fitness man on the totem pole then as Clarewalks says - there are a LOT of other options. I teach Yoga and bootcamps and also loovvee crossfit ( do it 5X a week) Crossfit is actually one of the most variable exercise programs out there. You can literally modify ANYTHING for ANY level of fitness ( I mean, Whitney has been posting crossfit workouts, and she can barely walk!) Sounds like that author is just massively insecure and entitled...bad combo lol! As an instructor- I teach what is on the schedule., If I am supposed to teach a level 2 Yoga class , that is what my students are getting regardless of who comes to the class. Just last week I had a student who had never done any yoga come to my level 2. I told her " this is a level 2, it will be taught as a level 2. do what you can! and put your mat in the middle of the room so you can look around and see what is going on. " I will not slow down my class for just one person ( my regular students are fairly advanced) I did help her a lot, but it was still a level 2 class. And you know what, she survived and even said she liked it. 6 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/55723-social-media-whats-up-with-her/page/70/#findComment-4160475

I don't know how fast the original video was when sped up, but when I slowed it down, I specified it should be at I think 25% of the original, maybe 10%. I'll check. What I can do is, we all have a pretty good sense of what Whit's general, oh, how can it be put, "cruising speed" is. You know, how fast she tends to move generally. I'll see if I can figure out a percentage that comes near to her general speed, and see what the video yields then. Edited to add: Okay, original video was what it was, my revised original was 25% of that, I'm about to post a version at 12% of her original IG posted speed, seems to be close to what you would have seen live in the gym. For comparison, the video posted previously by cherenkov of the guy from Scott Herman Fitness has him, at full speed, doing a burpee in about two seconds. In this revised Whit video, it takes her about fifteen seconds.
