As winter draws near, the participants turn to land game to survive the season, but their intended prey turns out to be more clever and more deadly than they ever could have imagined.

Animals against Aloners/ Animals are mockingly winning.  Foxy was cute. I actually did not want Fowler to get the bird. I bird watch and that little guy was cute. Is Fowler the first to capture a bird? I cannot remember. The boar on that camera was huge.

OK rumor hat the next person left on day 72 - wrong. funny how there are 2 guys and 3 women left. Good for Callie pulling through, she is hungry for t he money That is pretty obvious now.

That's what I was wondering, it looked like she still had only a basic tarp setup, nothing like the sturdier huts of all the remaining people.

I'm really glad that Callie's spider bites look to be healing.  She's delightful.  And show, I loved the info on the amount of calories and grams of protein in finger nails.

I was rooting for the fox. I kept thinking, "Well, build a better shelter, Meghan," every time she worried about the fox getting in her shelter. Everyone else left has great shelters.

Last saw Greg 2am day 51, suffering from hypothermia and it was a toss up who was tapping at 9am. Tonight's episode begins with Greg at 5am, wet, in the rain and huddled around the fire - still suffering and I would have understood had that boat pulled up on his beach. Really wonder about his mental state. Maybe he has things hanging around the fire under the tarp drying, but if he does I'm not seeing it. Yep, he's calling in and tapping out. Sooo, Dan and Greg both tap and leave on the morning of Day 51. But, what a difference in appearance. Greg looks beat, while Dan looks way better. One I'm sorry to see leave, other couldn't care less. The voice over as he packs to leave makes it clear it was the best choice made for the right reasons - and one he hated making.

Day 51 - 12:40pm 5 people remain. Oh no, next up is Callie, the third of those I thought the boat might be picking up at the end of last week. Hey great, as she's talking about her bites and being about to tap, everything is in the past tense, says she's not ready to quit and her journey continues. Ah, but I worry about the bites and wonder what the medic will say during the periodic checkup. More poultice making and herbal treatments... hoping they help. Day by day, makes it through at least one more day. Actually, 6 days go bye before we return on day 57 - 10am. This time, when she says it looks better I agree... not only her bites, but I think everything about her appearance is better than when we saw her last. Day 60 - 11am Arrr, a mouse in the house. Seems contestants were warned about the hantavirus carrying mice, as we already learned from Dave, and told that if they found mice in their shelter, they need to kill and get rid of the mouse or move - she says SHE AIN'T MOVING! Says she'd just as soon go home as abandon her shelter. Sooo, she embarks on setting traps. Course, her motive is different, she doesn't want to eat it, she just wants it gone. As she makes her trap, we get a little insight into her plans for the money if she wins, she wants money to buy land. Next morning at 4:30, mouse trap wakes her - squished mouse. Hmmm, now we have to wonder if he came alone or brought the family into this great shelter.

Day 52 - 930am  Fowler We get a view of the completed shelter - looking good, dude. What a difference, Fowler is "so warm, so dry", snug in his shelter - compare that to Greg. Today's project - expand his food choices, hoping for his traps to produce and thinking about birds. Sooo, out comes the sling and on the hunt. I read somewhere that his choice for ammo was 30 hot pink ball bearings - pink so that he could maybe find them after a shot. Course he could always switch to rocks, but the size and weight variations would hurt accuracy. One thing I see on his hunt - he may have that hill to climb, but he is surrounded by bamboo! He may not shoot the birds, but he sets a trap - even calling the bird  the Roadrunner, which I guess makes him the coyote. He films as the bird goes in, eats the bait and comes out. Day 56 - 10:40 Out raking the front yard and about to go get firewood, check for fish, and hey, bird in the trap. Ah, hate to see him kill the bird, not much meat, but, hey, this is the "survival portion." Little homesick talk here too as he eats dinner.

Day 53 - 9am Carleigh hey, she had that little hiccup with the collapsed roof at first, but has a class A shelter now. We open with her in her bag singing "Happy Birthday to Me." We haven't seen much of her, but she's one of the clean camper people. She's out foraging - and finding edible plants. Hey, another great attitude, she figures living is enjoying the experience, while surviving is getting through the experience - so she's decided to live the experience. Day 59 Carleigh wakes to a deer outside her door - she mentions how good it would be if she could hunt, but turns out it's an endangered species and off limits to contestants. We haven't seen much inside her great shelter, but we get a hint of a nice fireplace/hearth as she works to repair a hole in her glove.

Day 54 6:30am Megan dayum, is she still out there? How long has it been? I've about forgotten her! Ah yeah, previews show her worried about a fox, so we open with her watching the fox on her trail cam. She tells us foxy keeps her awake at night, and we hear a sound bite about rabies. Like Carleigh, she's out foraging - still finding plants, but the frost is hurting her harvest. She thinking foxy may be good eats - hmmm maybe she'll have more luck than Greg, but I'm still rooting for foxy. Another, hmmm somehow I doubt the editors portrayal of her fearing rabid foxy if she's thinking of trapping and eating the fox. Day 55 Finally, a look at her shelter - not impressed looks like a simple tarp over a ridge pole. Going back and forth on the rabies fear - I think she's playing it up for the camera and not really afraid. She goes out and throws a hook in the water - with no bait? More foraging, more fox sightings, caught something in the trap, but like Britt it chewed its way out. For someone they're trying to convince us is afraid of the fox, she seems to be going in the wrong direction as she tries to catch it on camera. LATER, THAT NIGHT she's awake listening to the fox dig around. Day 56, early morning she's awake listening to it dig around. Hey, on the trail cam I'm seeing a healthy looking fox - but I sort of question if the fox I see on the camera is HER fox. I mean on camera I see bamboo growing in the background that I didn't notice as she was out foraging. Anybody else think she may have pitched her tent in the middle of prime mouse hunting terrain? Then, she's the Forest biologist, she probably knows better than me. Ah, now she's questioning staying as she sits and listens for foxy. Crying about being the only mother out here and missing her kids.

Day 59 - 11am another seldom seen contestant - Dave. He was thin to begin with, and he isn't looking good, thinner, scruffy, and wrinkled comes to mind. As in the past, his segment opens with him acting crazy for the camera. Then he's shooting his bow - just practide, no meat on the arrow. He's hoping to hunt boar. I'm not a hunter, but like Fowler's bird, I realise it could be a game winner if he got a boar and preserved some meat. Here's it's been two months, and he's just now acting like it's time to start hunting and setting traps? Hey, Dave must be close to the dump. He's already found useful stuff, and now he found wire he can use for pig traps. Day 61 opens once again with more faces at the camera - guess that's his trademark, whenever he starts filming he starts out with making faces. Some strawberry leaf tea, then off to check the traps. No boar, but he finds game trails where he thinks he can hunt from blinds. What's this, he's in the blind and it sounds like there may be something in a trap. Well, lots of sign, trail camera knocked over, but no  pig in a trap. Yep, porky closeup as it nosed the camera ?

Well, two months in. Previews show snow coming down good. Oh dear, Megan may regret not spending more time on her shelter. We left her crying and homesick, questioning being there. Now snow, not much of a shelter, snow covering her plants she's been relying on for food. She may not be here much longer - I think she might quit if she knew half the folks remain after 61 days. Fowler is singing the homesick blues in the previews. Been 61 days, snowing, winter has arrived, must be hard to stick it out not knowing how everyone else is doing.

Hmmm. Can't remember if Lucas (season 1) caught a bird while fishing, or found it. I do remember him upset that they were messing with his trotline. Then Justin (season 2) found a dead bird. Definitely remember that, as I thought it silly to toss it out into the ocean instead of using it as bait.

I really hope Fowler's talk about missing his family isn't a prelude to a tap out.

I also enjoyed:

• the Lower Third Title giving us the nutritional information of fingernails
• the boar on the knocked over motion camera having its "Ha ha ha!  You can't catch me!" close-up

I think one of the reasons I'm enjoying the Patagonia challenge more than Victoria Island challenges is, there seems to be more animal activity in Patagonia in late autumn than in Victoria Island.  In seasons one and two the animal activity was mainly bears (avoid), mice (squish and eat), and fish (catch and eat).  So Victoria Island was basically a fishing challenge.  Most other animals had either flown south for the winter, or burrowed into their winter homes.  In Patagonia there are boars and puma and foxes and birds running around, as well as fish and mice (hantavirus, don't eat) and deer (endangered, but looks beautiful on camera if you can get a shot of them, thanks Carleigh).

I didn't realize they could have bow & arrows until I saw Dave (who looks like an emaciated Ethan Zohn from Survivor) with one.  To me, it seems like a no-brainer to bring a bow (if you're proficient with one, of course) instead of trying to create all these elaborate snares that rarely seem to work.*

*Disclaimer:  I can't shoot a bow, build a snare, set a trap, nothing.  I have no skills.  I hate outdoors and would not go on this delightful show for all the money on earth.  Go Callie!

Callie is awesome and I am glad that she wants the money.  She is one tough lady with a great attitude.  Callie and Fowler have that way about them that makes them a delight to watch on camera.  This is not a skill that can be learned.  The camera just loves certain people.

The producers have hit the jack pot with these two...camera ready and great survivalists.  I would be happy with either for the win.

On the other end of the spectrum is Dave.  He is uncomfortable to almost painful to watch.  However, if he really is good with a bow and arrow, that could give him a great advantage when the plants die and the lake freezes up.  I really do not want Dave to win, but that bow and arrow could make all the difference.

^^^^ That's what I wanted to know - if you're so worried about an animal coming in your tent and nipping you, why don't you fix a shelter where animals can't get in and nip you?  Then you can sleep the whole night through.  LOL

Greg tapped out,  not a surprise. If he built a better shelter with indoor fire, he wouldn't need such a big fire and a lot of wood. And of course, he wouldn't have such a hard time keeping himself warm. He told the crew it's been a week since he caught a fish but i thought he got a fish when he fell into the water?! How many days ago was that? 

Yay Callie! You go girl! When the fingernail fact pop up, I was like, "well, the editor sure have been having fun with the editing this season." 

Can't help but to think of Dan when fowler raking his yard. Dan didn't want to waste his calories on work whereas fowler is building stuffs and raking his yard just so he can use the rake. What a difference. 

Hahaha another one outfoxed by the smart fox! Megan was busy filming herself walking that she didn't see a fox ran into hiding seconds prior to that. Then the fox went to check out Megan while she's checking her trap, I imagined the fox was like, "is that trap for me? Haha f u, stoopid human!" lol! 

At some point of this episode, I totally forgot about Dave. I thought 4 people left (fowler, callie, carleigh and Megan) and then they showed Dave and David (last year's winner) popped in my mind. For a moment i thought there was a mistake until i remember Dave - the skeleton man.

I was so excited of the possibility of someone in the show finally catching big game. That walk Dave took to check his trap felt like forever! Bummer, he didn't catch anything. We've been teased with the possibility of them catching something with their trap since episode 1. at this point, i just want them to catch something with their trap, something bigger than a mice and a small bird. 

Next week preview shows Carleigh talking about trapping goose, so that means everyone in the top 6 have tried trapping. It'll be interesting to see if she succeed or will join the Fail Trap Club. 

In the transition clip where the editor shows the name and the spot/location of the contestant (?) (or survivalist?), i noticed some of them seems to have similar background which means that they're in the same area and close to each other. I wonder if they can see or hear whenever the boat came to pick up people who tapped out. 

I read somewhere that this season will have 14 episodes (not sure if it's true or not). My oh my, there are only 5 left and we're only half way through?! I'm happy that these guys stayed longer than the first 2 seasons but damn, I already feel like this season has been going on forever and I'm dying to know who is the winner.

Fowler is very, very skilled at making things. His craftsmanship is just as beautiful as Jose's, but he can just whip things out in no time (unlike Jose who took eons to make anything).

I think she improvised a reel using the spool the line came on. I looked pretty closely once when she was casting and thought that's what I was seeing.

Does a bow and multiple arrows count as only one choice for the participants' 10 choices?  If so, seems a little unfair.  That's a lot of stuff for one choice.

So glad Greg went early.  All that whining was getting very irritating, very fast.  And that accent... ugh!!

Love Callie, love Fowler!  And starting to really love Carleigh too!

ETA: Finally!  Someone builds an animal trap that actually works!  Go Callie and Fowler!!

Yep, 1 primitive bow and six wooden arrows - 1 choice.  As is Fowler's slingshot, replacement band, and 30 ball bearings, or everybody's fishing line and 25 hooks - each just count as 1 item.

I get what you're saying, no where near what we saw washed up at VI. Whi9le I think the wire is the first time anyone said they found something, I suspect other finds have been made. If you look closely in Dave's shelter, you'll see a wire grate/panel leaning against the wall behind where he made his bamboo drying racks. Also, in addition to the cook pot he brought with him, an old fashion teapot is in a couple shots. Carleigh had a plastic bottle to keep her worms in while fishing. She either found it, or it's from the water in emergency ration pack everyone received (the one not counted against their ten items). Never heard where Dan got the white crate from that you see at his site in a couple shots - though someone suggested it could be part of the crates the cameras are packed in. Sooo, there is some stuff there, but not near as much as up north.

I was sorry to see Greg go, I liked him.  I've never noticed that he had an accent though.  Just sounds like a regular guy to me.  I also really like Fowlers shelter, the walls in particular.  Like Callie's shelter, it looks snug.  Carleigh's is nice as well.  Megan's is uninspiring, as a good wind will most likely take it out.  Dave's has made no impression on me, apparently, as I can't even bring it to mind.  The thing I like about this season the most is that it doesn't rain as much, so they can be out and about doing things more.  It makes it more interesting to watch, and I think it's easier for the contestants to keep a positive mind set without constant damp and greyness.  Cold is easier to take when you aren't damp as well.  It makes a huge difference, even when dressed warmly.  We just went through a stretch here of below zero temperatures, and it was not a problem until it clouded over, warmed up and started raining.  Then you really feel it eating through your bones.

I was surprised she was freaking out about the fox as well. He isn't going to bother her, and if he was digging around in the ground he was probably after a mouse. Better a fox than a mouse with a hantavirus.

Way back in the beginning, I was a Megan fan, back when she was showing us edible plants, setting fish spring poles, etc. Then, she sort of disappeared. She doesn't have much of a shelter, and the critters make her uncomfortable. First it was the feral hogs, which had her building a boma barricade. Now a healthy looking fox, doing normal healthy fox mouse hunting type stuff. I'm still not convinced her "rabid fox" fear isn't manufactured drama from the editors. I mean, she works as a forestry biologist on VI, her bio says she's had numerous encounters with the bears and cougars, yet a fox is scaring her. She was a question mark for me from the beginning when I saw she was bringing a gill net - now that I hear they're not allowed to use gill nets. I'm picking her as the next to tap, unless someone gets hurt of course. Snow coming to cover her plants, lousy shelter, missing hubby and two youngsters, and already questioning why she's out there, yep, not long for the game. But then, I started saying the same thing about Larry and David midway through last season.

I agree about Megan being ridiculous.  I was never afraid of foxes even when I saw them in my back yard all the time.  If she gets that worked up about a fox how would she get over a wild boar poking around her tent?  She definitely should have expended more energy on finding and creating a more secure shelter.  Now it might be a little too late if her energy is depleted and snow is coming.

Greg's accent sounded to my ear like the old Bob and Doug McKenzie "Great White North" skits from SNL.  "Take off, you hoser, eh?"  It didn't annoy me but I did hear it.  He seemed pretty self aware about how his lack of food/energy contributed to his poor decisions.  I thought he looked much older than 53 when he started out, and even older when he tapped.  I got the feeling he had some physical endurance issues going into this that were exacerbated by the harsh living conditions.  I didn't understand how he looked so wet in the end and was suffering from hypothermia when he claimed to be changing into dry clothes and stood so long in front of his fire.

Callie is my favorite and I am very happy she seems to be on the mend from her spider bites.  I had resigned myself to her departure this week. 

Fowler is amazing.  I think his talent exceeds Jose's.

Binge watched this weekend and I'm now obsessed with this show. 

"Fishhead soup, fishhead soup, it's too bad you taste like poop" endears me to Fowler most, but Callie's right up there with her sauna and poultices.  I give them all a lot of credit.

Once again I'm going to have to take Callie's word for it that her spider bites are improving.  They still look awful to me, but I will say that she looks better--peppier, not at all defeated like she was--so she must be feeling better.  Kudos to her!  I also wonder what the medic will say about the bites, if she points them out that is.

I'd be 100% OK with either a Fowler or Callie win--they are killing it!   I'd be 98% OK with either a Dave or Carleigh win too.  Megan...well...she's there, but falling fast in my estimation.  She seems to be falling back to the Dan strategy of doing as little as possible and it seems to be affecting her mental attitude.  But maybe her feud with the fox will revitalize her.  I don't know...

I loved Greg's accent, but it reminds me of Northern Maine (home). It is that combination of Canadian/English and local dialect. It is like what you would have heard in Fargo (the movie). That lilt of people who live near the Canadian border, but do not necessarily speak French. I found it endearing and I could hear it immediately. I had a voice and diction Instructor as an undergrad who told us that she could pinpoint our area of origin by just hearing us talk about specific topics. I think that my ear is tuned to those particular "lilts" of the northern border states, much like a person who lives in the South can hear the differences between Southern and regional dialects. Callie is great, but I have been on the Fowler train once I heard he was from Maine, so I am hoping he will win. I agree that Megan will be next to tap.

I don't dislike Fowler, but I don't see the "Wow!" factor that others are seeing in him.  He made a decent shelter and carved a little rabbit.  The bird trap was nice, but I'm sure it cost him much  more than the 20 calories that poor little bird provided.  Eh.

Callie, on the other hand, is made of "Wow!" , and this is coming from someone who didn't care for her in the first episode.  The nicest shelter - by far - in all 3 seasons.  She's giving Mike a run for his money in terms of creativity.  She seems grounded and happy and she's not going to be playing the "miss my kids/spouse/SO" card.
