Have they specified how long they were married? Given the age of their children I wouldn't guess more than 20 years - which means it's not as if they married too young. It's interesting that the show hasn't really explored why they grew apart or how they each changed during their years of marriage that led to the divorce. We just kind of jumped in right at the hiring a lawyer stage.

There are a lot of things about this show that reek of SATC (to me). The tiptoe running that she does. The hair constantly in the face. SJP's acting... it doesn't appear that she is even attempting to portray another type of character. Frances is who Carrie would be if she had settled down, married Aidan, moved to the burbs and embraced the lifestyle IMO.

Pretty brazen of Robert to take his new gf of a month to his young daughter's birthday. I probably wouldn't. Had Lila even met her yet? Is her birthday party really the time for that?

It seemed to really throw Frances through a loop to learn that Robert had told Jackie that they had slept together. Frances probably thought that he never would and that it would be this little secret that they had from Jackie.

It feels like Jackie has dealt with this kind of relationship before. She was pretty calculating in her comments to Frances, first in making it clear that she knew they'd slept together, and then when she informed Frances that he'd also told her that it hadn't meant anything to him. Battle lines were drawn.

i don't think that she isn't trying to portray another type of character, i think it's that she can't portray another character. a great actress, she is not. i do like her somewhat even so.

Molly Shannon takes her mannerisms to every role she does, it's hard to get her out of her way of speaking and moving. She was great in a film called Other People.

I see SO much of Carrie in SJB, this week she bounces across the street wearing high heels. Carrie always bounced across streets.

there is something about molly shannon or maybe it's just been the characters she portrays, that makes me cringe. i can't stand her acting. did't like her on snl either.

OMG!   Is this the Molly Shannon Show?  Too much air time to see her face close up and overacting.  Ugh!  Frances getting it on with the guy on the sofa, and then her son with the girl in the bathroom was just too much for me.  Couldn't wait for the episode to end, but that's just my opinion.  Yuk.

So they both have relationships now, though the only reason Frances made it a thing may be that her daughter caught her about to screw the guy in her backyard, which is completely visible from the street.

Two episodes left and they've taken mostly little steps, though I guess Robert is going to go into business with his gf while Frances may be gaining some momentum with the gallery.

Will they both become financially successful after divorce?

Also, Nick putting down that young tennis pro with, "we need someone with a college education" was funny.

I liked this episode, and for literally the first time, Robert didn't seem like just a buffoon to me. He seemed more relatable and funny, and he even looks much better.

How much time has passed between this episode and last? I was surprised by how fast the relationship with Frances' new guy progressed.

Too much Molly Shannon, so I had to laugh when she gumbied down the steps.

Yeah, I can't run in the best athletic shoes as well as SJP can run in heels, tho I did appreciate how winded she was so fast.

Tonight was the first episode where I wasn't super annoyed by Frances or Robert. They both seemed to be pretty normal. I like the groove that they're getting into - although Frances, making out on a trampoline in broad daylight is probably a really dumb idea. Really really dumb.

I like Frances' guy. I also like that Robert's girlfriend had a moment of clarity and maturity.

And yes, way way way way too much Molly Shannon.

I was wondering why the Molly Shannon scene was even in there. I get that she and Dallas are also characters but it seems like their scenes mostly support the main plot. So what was this all about?

It boggles my mind how Shannon even got the part.  I do like Talia tho, so I'm hoping she gets a good story line.  Every time I look at SJP tho, I see an older version of Carrie, and it ain't pretty.  I will always identify her with SATC unfortunately.

I like Dallas, too. Diane is too cartoonish and it feels like she's squeezed in at times. SJP has certain mannerisms that I see no matter what part she's playing.

Almost makes you think they modeled the characters after the SATC friends that Carrie had.

Diane is over the top, kind of like Samantha.

Dallas is more dialed back, like Miranda or Charlotte.

But I don't think Sharon Horgan would go along with that kind of character development.

And I like Shannon and don't mind her character nearly as much as I used to mind Samantha.

Only two episodes left? The first season was 10 episodes.

Molly Shannon must think that she's on another show. I find her mostly unwatchable.

Very SATC ending there, with SJP having drinks at a cool restaurant in the city, tossing her hair back as the camera zooms away.

I keep thinking how much better this show would be if SJP and Molly Shannon weren't on it. It could have actually been a compelling lens on the issues surrounding contemporary divorce and co-parenting. Instead we get Carrie Bradshaw-ish tiptoe traipsing around Manhattan still. Ugh.

It was a throwaway scene, but I found Dallas's discomfort with Jackie's lack of boundaries hilarious.

I thought that was mean-spirited and unnecessary. Country club employees are supposed to go out of their way to cater to the clients. The guy was just doing his job. BTW, if it's true what Nick said last episode about meeting Diane when she sold him a belt at Bergdorf, she probably doesn't have a college degree either.

I don't like Jackie very much, but I 100% agree that Robert overstepped by talking to her daughter. He thought he was protecting Tom, but in reality he was trying to talk about sex with a teenage girl who isn't his daughter. That's creep territory.

Eh, I agree he overstepped by talking to Jackie's daughter about sex, but I chalked that more up to his befuddlement with the topic and Jackie's failure to offer him any support.  Jackie honestly annoyed me most of all this episode.  She ignored Dallas' discomfort with their continuing to have a relationship, and she was mostly dismissive of Robert's legitimate concerns about their kids having sex at his home.

I also agree about Diane.  She doesn't need to appear in every episode, and her storyline felt more like contractually-obligated filler so she can earn her salary.

Nick might have detected Diane was attracted to the kid so he was putting him down for her benefit.

You're right about that.  Nick & Diane are both NUTS.  She would flirt with a young guy.  Who would want her?  She has to be medicated as she's all over the place and soooooo unattractive.

I thought Robert's initial reaction to Tom + Jackie's daughter was more normal. First, he made sure his son was taking precautions. And he was visibly upset by it. I can't imagine not being upset (thought Jackie was OK with it, so there's that). I agree, talking to the daughter made it weird, even after Jackie expressed her views on it.

I  forgot to mention that Robert has been looking very handsome the last couple of episodes .. Hot, actually with that wavy hair and clean shaven face.  Why is it that Frances wanted to divorce him in the first place, because he didn't listen to her constant blabbering?  What was so wrong about him?  He seems like he has his stuff together.   And, btw, where is everyone on this blog?  Did they all bail?

Hi Gem! I'm still here. I just didn't have much to say about the last episode. Except maybe that I enjoyed Molly Shannon's tumble down the stairs a little too much. I find her grating.

Also, I find the new painter storyline dull. I'm hoping something happens to jazz it up.

this was literally the first episode that I found Robert attractive. I have often found THC attractive, even hot, but never Robert, who has been, also pretty much up until this episode, a crass buffoon. I approve this new Robert and hope he sticks around.

I understand that SJP is playing a character but her outfit at the school event was odd. The blouse (solid maroon) didn’t match the shirt (black with gold leaves) and then the addition of blue shoes but no purse. Especially as she’s supposed to be a gallery owner. They usually have some panach and style.

That woman Janice was a bit freaky...can I pee on you, put my big (or any other toe) in your butt or how quickly she jumped onto the threesome idea! I can’t imagine her being a real person but rather some males idea of a fantasy woman.

I’m new to this shows threads (or late) but there’s very little activity. I’m wondering that all the bad press SJP got for her fight with Kim Catrall over SITC 3 has bled over to this s not a wonderful show IMHO but I am enjoying parts of it (especially THC).

How rich of Frances to be upset at Sylvia for leaving her gallery for a better offer when Frances did the same thing herself with Andrew and Skip. She probably sensed that her infidelity in her previous marriage was a sticking point with Andrew so she held onto that card until she needed to use it, then blew up the relationship precisely when she got the better offer. For someone so callous I'm amused that she would bother with the Miss Manners stuff of not accepting a date from a man because she was there with someone else. Who does she think she's fooling?

Can't wait for next week, when Frances appears to claim that she's the training wheels for everyone else and that the lives of those who leave her improve after the fact. Well yeah, when people finally extricate themselves from relationships with narcissists, their lives do generally improve, Frances.

First Mr. Big and Aleksandr Petrovsky, now Skip Zakarian. I swear, SJP must have it in stone somewhere that a good-looking zillionaire has to find her character irresistible in every show that she's on. It's baffling, really.

I felt like the art dealer did legitimately like Frances (he sent her the magnifying glass before he even saw Sylvia's art). I can understand Frances' anger even if it doesn't make sense from a "business is business" point of view. The gallery show was her big win and now it's gone.

I really didn't see where Robert has that much of a type really. Yes, their hair is roughly the same length but his new girlfriend is much more carefree than Frances ever seems. She has a confidence that I haven't seen Frances display at all. She just seems more fun than Frances has ever been. So Robert's freakout (and the friend mistaking them for each other) was a bit out of nowhere.

I do think that Frances wasn't ready for Andrew and pulled the cheating out of her back pocket to force his hand. She's seemed kind of tentative this whole time.

Now granted, I know very little about wildlife but how the fuck did the raccoon get inside of the brand new locked house and then die and bleed all over the tub?

I thought Robert and Frances both got dumped this episode but that wasn't exactly the case.  It was just Frances getting double-teamed by Andrew and Sylvia!

Andrew was going to spend $2500 on Frances and now the gazillionaire is sniffing around?  And to think she was slumming around with pornstache Robert and the granola-eating Jermaine.

Some good lines but the one I remember is "non-alcoholic wine is bullshit!"

Almost right up there with "I'm not drinking any fucking merlot!"

Francis looks and acts like Robert's new girlfriend?  In what world?  They look nothing alike besides being blonde haired white women.  Frances is uptight and controlled to a point of analness and the new girlfriend is pretty carefree and easy going.  They do not even have the same body type.  I'm sorry, but it is a real stretch to say SJP looks anything like that woman.  Also, I do not think the new girlfriend would take looking like Francis as a compliment, but it was cool that she did not freak out and make a big deal about it.

Thank you to the writers for handling the client/therapist relationship appropriately. In real life professional relationships are handled professionally (most of the time). No matter how close a friend you do not divulge private and confidential information. Your career depends on this. I must admit, I was holding my breath.

I enjoy Molly and the husband, even thought I hate him immensely. They are so well defined characters, they work as great supporting characters but would never, ever work as the main focus.

I thought Frances got her just desserts. I had to tell my husband why SJP is so annoying in this show because she is doing the same things that Carrie used to do. I lost it when she acted cold and pulled away when cute boyfriend was kissing her.

I thought it was interesting that Robert got shade for wanting his own attorney to review the contract and Frances wound up with the short end of the stick specifically because she was all la-di-da Best Friends Forevah! about locking down her business relationship WITH A CONTRACT.

Contracts.  They're not evil, they're gooood.  I have yet to see two people have a perfect meeting of the minds when it comes to business, and the best time to learn that is when you're writing it all down.

Hard to believe Frances re-gifted that antique Russian ruby-encrusted blah blah blah magnifying glass within a matter of hours.  I guess those little $3000 tokens flow in and out of her life on a regular basis--not my world.  But the magnifying glass was central to five scenes, so maybe we'll see it again.  (I'll take it if no one wants it!)

I could like Frances well enough--if they'd stop making her look like a fool at least once per episode.  Please, what adult woman is not poised enough to simply say "Nice to have met you, goodbye" without stammering and stumbling after a man like a clumsy puppy?

I thought that was extremely crass. First of all, that gift is WAY too expensive for someone unless you're super duper wealthy. This was a business arrangement - she did paintings, you displayed them. A token of appreciation is fine but one that costs $2000+ is really really inappropriate. If someone gave me a gift like that (for a particular taste, of no real purpose other than looking at it, unexpected, extravagant) out of the blue, I'd feel very very uneasy. So I'm glad the woman returned it. She was under no obligation to do that.

If I were Frances, I would have sent it back to the art guy with a lovely note of appreciation but an insistence that I could not possibly accept such a gift. Is it just me? I mean, I would wonder what the implication is with a gift like that. I would feel very uneasy accepting a date with someone who just gave me the equivalent of thousands of dollars - what on earth would he expect from me?

So it was weird to give it. It was weird to accept it. And it was really really weird to regift it.

Why is it that I can never stand SJP's characters when I don't feel any personal antagonism toward her ? Because her characters don't exist in real life! Let's face it, most 45 year old women living in a suburb of NY with two teenagers don't live a life where they are able to quit a lucrative job to open up a business that is difficult at best to succeed; live in a beautiful home, immediately find not one but two attractive men interested in you ( and dismiss one for no good reason ). Just as I could never believe that Carrie Bradshaw was so desireable and talented that she could live the life she did while barely doing anything except eating out.

But Frances still gets the commissions for the sold-out show at her gallery, no? That's a big win in its own right. And as a suburban small gallery owner, surely she must have known that if she discovered anyone special that artist would eventually move on to more prominent galleries in the city. Her gallery is a stepping stone, not a goal.

I thought Robert was 100% right to get his own lawyer for the real estate business, and Jackie is not nearly the experienced business woman she claims to be if she got her panties in a bunch over it.

I don't mind Frances ending it with Andrew if she wasn't seeing a future with him. He's an attractive man living in NYC, so he'll do just fine. Even though the magnifying glass Skip sent her was expensive, I bet he sends similar gifts to other women on a regular basis. I didn't get the impression that he has any deep feelings for her, she's just the flavor of the month.

But discovering someone that special--and repping her--is the very thing that could have put The Dufresne Gallery on the map.

The art world is famous for artists who were locked into brutal contracts giving early mentors exclusive rights to their work or disproportionate shares of the income.  An early gallery owner sometimes winds up making more money from a successful artist than the artist himself, for years

So it seems silly to make Frances so incredibly naïve she assumed Sylvia would remain with her tiny gallery because they'd 'bonded.'

With nothing in writing, there's not even anything stopping Sylvia from screwing Carrie Frances on the commission: "Thanks for letting me borrow your space; here's an Edible Arrangement to show my appreciation."

I agree that a professional like Jackie isn't aggrieved by a second party review of any contract.  Even her . . . boyfriend.  Pffft.

HA, I had the same thought - not to mention that we're supposed to believe Robert, who was hiding upstairs while taking care of this task, nevertheless ran downstairs to grab the apple pie as an impromptu air freshener (and no one noticed a bathroom smelling unusually like a baked good soaked in Lysol?).

I love Sharon Horgan and I really, really want to like this show but... it just does not work. I like Robert and Dallas, I roll my eyes at Carrie Frances Bradshaw Dufresne, I tolerate Diane, Nick and the kids. It's just spinning its wheels. I would be shocked if it gets a season three.

It passed through my head last night, as Jackie pitched the business idea to "Robbie" (barf) - whatever happened to Robert's plan to open that warehouse arcade whatever-it-was that was the big plot point of season one? It's entirely possible I've blocked out the resolution, of course. Also, didn't Robert have some other friends last season? And what happened to the back problem that felled him while building Nick's outdoor pizza oven?

God Robert would be a vile man to be married to but Frances is an entitled piece of work too. I've had some sympathy for her at times as being married to Robert would wear a person down. But WTF was with her attitude with the hold up at the building site. She had been stopped for a few seconds and she was already yelling at the workers. They weren't slowing her up on purpose and her yelling wouldn't make them complete their work any faster. Hell it happened to me when I was on my way to hospital, experiencing contractions less than a minute apart. Sure I cursed a lot but just in the privacy of the car where they couldn't hear and after a minute or two we got to go.

And expecting Robert not to go to the school event because it fell on her night was stupid. Lyla is more than old enough to have a say on the custody arrangement. While she is too young to decide she should live with her dad even when his house was unsuitable, she should absolutely have the right to tell her mother she wants her dad at her school event. And in fact, she should get to spend as much of her free time with her dad as suits them both. If she wants to hang out with Robert every evening between school and curfew and every weekend that's her prerogative, as long as he's amenable. She's not 5 and in need of arranged playdates.
