The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

If you go back into the documents released by InTouch someone sent an email to Harpo studios alleging that Josh had molested his sisters. Harpo studios forwarded the emails which triggered an investigation. She makes no mention of the letter in the book there, just that Oprah should confront the Duggars about all their secrets.

Yep, Oprah's staff did the right thing and turned the info over to the authorities.  She also scrapped the planned show featuring the Duggars.  At the time, it was all just a rumor and Harpo, of course, would not discuss why the show was canceled; we figured she planned to ask some in-depth questions about Gothard that JB didn't like.

I wish that episode of Oprah had been taped & aired.

Once she found out about the molestation of minor children, Oprah couldn't proceed since telling the story would violate the girls' privacy and also potentially cause problems with any prosecution.

I think, however, that JB went into it thinking he could control the interview and avoid any questioning he didn't like.  So, as soon as Oprah started asking about Gothard, his senate campaign, or their finances; JB would've clammed right up and the whole thing would've been scrapped.

What I don't get is that the police dept released the info in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act.  We were able to guess who's who, but I don't see how the police dept screwed this up.  If Boob & Michelle had done the right thing & turned Josh into the police as a minor, his records would have been sealed.  The Duggars f'd this up big time.  If they had followed the law, none of us would know about this.

Also to add, because of the Duggars not doing the right thing, turning Josh into the police & having his record sealed, the town will have to pay major legal fees to defend themselves against the Duggars.  Taxes might go up in that town to cover this.  If I lived there, I wouldn't be a happy camper.

I do not know if the property taxes and other forms of taxes will go up since I know the county I live in has been dealing with law suits and our taxes have not went up. Of course our taxes related to school bond levies and public safety bond levies have seen an increase in property taxes, but the voters have a chance to vote on them.

If I live where the Duggars are at, I would be more upset over how they handle the whole thing and bringing a lawsuit against the city and law enforcement department. The Duggars especially JB, Michelle and Josh brought all of this on by themselves and have no one to blame but themselves, but once again the victims and the area where they live will be paying the price for JB's and Josh's stupidity and famewhoreness. The thought of a known child molester was allowed to get away with what he did for years scares me more than the news media and social media outing the Duggars. I hate to sound like a broken record, but I would not be surprise if more girls were molested by Josh than the five victims who were mentioned. The whole thing reminds me a scary incident in a small town south of Helena where a teacher was molested young boys for years and nothing was done about it because the teacher's brother was a state representative. School officials, other teachers, and others in the town knew what was going on and were too afraid to speak up. The whole thing came out when one of the boys who was molested by the teacher was caught molesting a young boy. It was an ugly situation once the whole thing came out.

The bottom line is that even if the taxes don't go up (I hope not) the town is still losing money they could have used to help the residents of the town &make the town a better place to live.

Don't worry about making the town a better place because Constable JD aka Barney Fife is on the case or does he do his volunteer law enforcement (gag I hate typing that) in another county.

What a bullshit article especially about Michelle and the statement about the produce

Who does she think she's fooling? Her grown daughters didn't even know how to make mashed potatoes from scratch, and that's like Side Dishes 101. Their definition of "fresh produce" is a gallon sized drum of Aldi fruit cocktail in syrup.

Must have been an old quote of Michelle's. I clicked on the link and she goes on to say something to the effect of , "If they have $68 for a new couch they wait until they find one. If the old couch is ratty, they throw it out and sit on the floor until they find a $68 couch."

Michelle's black clogs probably cost more than $68. As does her iPhone, her trip to Hawaii, her endless cups of Starbucks ...

I guess the buying used rule faded away when they actually had money. Maybe they need a Financial Freedom refresher course.

Also, from watching various episodes, I get the impression that they DON'T buy in bulk.

All those tiny tiny cans, all lined up.

Tiny packages of PRE-GRATED cheese when making pizza.

Tiny, individual packs of instant oatmeal, which a buddy boy had to feed to a hungry sibling.

Individual yogurt instead of quarts.

Bulk, indeed.

I don't think that they're really smart enough to figure all this out. Back in the old days, they went to Aldi which was super-cheap and sold stuff in small cans. Those are the habits they developed 25 years ago, and they haven't made any effort to adapt, or change, or improve this part of their lives.

Of course, now they could shop at Costco and Sams Club. There are also, of course, co-ops where you can buy grains, nuts, cereal, etc, in bulk. And, as has been pointed out on this forum approximately 1 million times, they have tons of acreage and tons of kids, and could easily grow some of their own food.

They are bone lazy and so terrified of change of any type, that even an alternate grocery store is a non-starter.

The first episode I ever watched, they all trooped into Aldi's and I remember Michelle saying they would buy every single frozen burrito the store had!  I was shocked because in our tiny family of only 5 kids, there were plenty of us to line up and easily make homemade burritos.  We would make lots and sometimes freeze some.

My mom never bought frozen, prepared foods!

The prepared food thing is insane given their endless babble about frugality. I think they rationalize it that they have sooooo many kids, and J'chelle is soooo busy MOTYing all over the place, that she simply has no time to cook for her children. Forget that she has no job and swarms of available J'Slave labor.

The Duggars are not the first large family in the history of the world. People managed just fine making big pots of soup or stew out of actual meat and vegetables or spaghetti and meatballs, or meatloaf. A nice turkey dinner is actually a very easy and economical meal for a large family. For whatever reason, it appears that they seldom cook and eat together as a family.

Aldi is awesome.  My mom shopped there before the Duggars made it cool, and I shop there now for my family. There's only one "brand" of food, and you have to bag your own groceries, but I can shop for my whole family for downright cheap without having to look at sales flyers or clipping coupons.

But, I don't buy 98376 cans of green beans and corn like the Duggars. ?

I've never actually been to Aldi's...I never heard of them until we moved to our most  recent place about 4 years ago, and we get flyers from them, but not a lot of detail. They are not close by. My husband went to the nearest one in passing a couple of years ago, but was not impressed. I guess though, that if you know what you are after and work the trip in to coincide with other things in the same errand that they are probably worth it.

Aldi is the closest supermarket where I live and I shop there regularly. You cannot beat their prices. Their produce is fresh, cheap and very good, and organic is an option. When I was growing up, mom served us canned vegetables and fruit cocktail, and, you know, they were pretty awful, lol. I agree with the other posters that with a little effort and research, Michelle could feed her family very well on a budget.

The reason it wasn't revealed is because she and her parents don't have a TV show where everyone knows their names and ages and where they live.  Her statement was there, it just wasn't able to be connected to anyone specifically because she is a private citizen who doesn't have a tv show based on some version of her 'real' life.

From what I have heard, there are already plenty of precautions in place in Tontitown in regards to minors and revealing information publicly. The juvenile records were sealed and the police reports would have been destroyed except that JimBob made sure that Josh couldn't be charged so they were never transferred there.

All the precautions in the world cannot prevent every single instance and often ends up costing the taxpayers a bundle and also causing a lot of angst amongst city employees who are only trying to do their jobs.  Once again, reality TV stars who've given enough details of their lives to be instantly recognizable even if their names are redacted who were victims of a molestation by a family member and whose parents obstructed the investigation and then didn't bother to ask for the police records to be destroyed is a pretty small subset of the populace.  The cost of this lawsuit and its aftermath is going to be far more than any potential benefit it might bring to anyone other than the 4 sisters.

It’s a civil lawsuit brought to court by private citizens, why does it need to be in the public interest?

JB told a friend of his who happened to be a state trooper. That is not the same thing as actually walking into your local or county law enforcement department and filing a report about what Josh did or getting the legal reports or files destroyed.

If a private citizen brought a lawsuit against law enforcement or a government agency people have the right to know about it especially why the lawsuit was filed in the first place. The Duggars especially JB were upset they were "wronged" by certain people, but they do not mind airing their dirty laundry again when it comes to getting money from the evil people out there who supposedly caused all the pain and suffering again. The are naïve and not too bright to realize if they were not famewhores and did not spread their hatred and racism against certain groups of people the whole thing could have been avoided. It reminds me of a sad case where I live. A poor woman was stalked by a guy who got out of prison for kidnapping and trying to kill his ex-girlfriend. The creep followed the woman where she works at in the early morning hours. He ended up raping and killing her and dumping her body somewhere. He was caught and convicted and sent to prison. The husband and daughter of the victim sued the state of Montana because the guy was on parole for his earlier crimes instead of being locked up for a much longer sentence for what he did to other women. The family won, but the news media filed a suit saying they had a right to know the amount the family won since the taxpayers were footing the bill for the suit and amount of damages. The judge ruled in favor of the media, and I believe a bill was passed saying any type of lawsuits where money was awarded by government or other agencies funded by taxpayers had to become public knowledge.

It's fairly apparent that Jim Bob told the state trooper, who worked inspecting car lots and other state trooperish pursuits, not because he wanted to enter Josh into the legal justice system and follow the law but because he was his pal who would definitely help Josh avoid all consequences.  If JB had been really interested in reporting Josh' crimes, he would've done it by contacting the proper authorities.  I suspect that the reason he told his state trooper buddy was specifically to prevent having to report his son's FELONIOUS behavior to authorities who might actually have done the right thing while giving JB plausible deniability should anyone ever find out about his perverted son's criminal acts.  He just wanted to have cover should word ever get out that he allowed his daughters to be repeatedly molested by their brother while doing NOTHING significant to get help for any of them.

It doesn't, however, this family of grifters and scum have publically proclaimed that they are suing not because they feel entitled to compensation but because they are standing up for all victims of molestation (while also publically proclaiming that it is OK their brother was never punished for his crimes against them and that their parents worked overtime to make sure that was the case).  They don't get to claim purity of motivation in suing the county while claiming that their brother and their parents did everything right.

What Josh did is usually never reported to any cop, because the average parent doesn’t want their children to go to jail. Jimbob did more than the average parent.

In their own little world, they can say we are doing this for all victims of molestation, but in the real world, they are calling foul because someone called out their dirty little secret because of their hatred and racism against gays and lesbians. Sadly these two groups can be victims of molestation also, but the Duggars probably will tell them they deserve it because *gasp* they are evil, dirty and fill of sin because they are going against God's teachings. In my opinion, the way Ma and Pa Stupid handled the whole situation, and Josh repeatedly molesting his sisters more than once is a slap in the face to all victims of molestation especially with their belief of the girls brought this on themselves by their own actions because they tempted their own brother in inappropriately touch them more than once. We have to remember these are the same people who think a woman who was raped and becomes pregnant should be happy she is having a baby because a baby is a gift from God.

Did more than the average parent? Really...Josh was still molesting his sisters after he confessed the first time. JB was not worried about Josh going to jail. He was more concerned about how this would affect his so-called political career than the fact four of his daughters and another victim was being molested by his own son more than once. He did not get the girls or Josh they obviously need. A good parent sees the situation for what it is and gets the help for the victims and the person doing the molestation. He does not turn into a major famewhore by promoting his family as the most God fearing group in the universe and calls out certain others by calling them child molesters because they do not go along with his religious beliefs while hiding the fact his own son molested four of his daughters and a fifth victim. This is the same man who said he was abused by his own father because daddy was not religious enough for him while not protecting his own daughters from a brother who was molesting them more than once. Pot meet kettle.

And I cannot speak for everyone on here, but I do not think Doodlebug is saying the four girls are grifters and scum, but maybe saying JB, Michelle and Josh are the scum and grifters in all of this. I hate to think what the girls have been though because of the stupidity of their parents and at the hands of Josh. Instead of bringing a lawsuit and thinking money will solve the problem, the girls need professional help and not the praying, read the bible, and blame the devil (in this case the evil media) for the issues this scandal has brought out.

I'm re-reading the documents. I'm getting the distinct impression that Jim Bob's hand was played with the "church elders" (whomever those people were) because it was JB, Josh, and a church elder that went to the sheriff. Aren't religious figures in positions of authority mandated reporters? If so, the "church elders" failed these women as well by not reporting the abuse to the proper authorities.

Jim Bob going to the sheriff was long after the incidents had occurred and after Josh was sent to a "rehab" program.

JB told the state trooper because the state trooper was a fundy buddy of his (who, correct me if I'm wrong, is currently in prison for being a pedo.) I'm not sure an "average parent" would involve the cops in the first place--most "average parents" would see their fourteen year-old inappropriately touching his sisters and get him AND the sisters AND themselves into intensive family therapy STAT. Unless they had to figure out a way to cover it up so it wouldn't jeopardize their TV show.

I wonder how JB would have handled it if one of his daughters was molested by someone outside the family. Would he want some sort of justice or would he handle it the same lousy way he handled Josh being the molester.

I can see an average parent going to law enforcement if an outsider like a teacher, coach or someone with authority molested their child and trying to get the help they child would need. Of course, I am talking about the real world and not Duggar Land.

And, of course, family therapists are mandated reporters, so they would be required to report molestation of minor kids, so, had this been done, it would've triggered an official investigation.  Many, many years ago, a patient of mine told a staffer that she had caught her 12 year old son in the garage with a neighbor's 3 year old.  The 3 year old's pants were off and he was touching her vulva. She was distraught but hadn't told anyone, not even the neighbor.  What she didn't realize was that anyone working in medical care is a mandated reporter.  When my employee told her she would have to call the DCFS, the lady got irate, started claiming that her patient confidentiality was violated and stormed out.  She later called me to complain and I had to tell her that we'd already made the call and it would've been wrong to do otherwise.  I don't know what happened, obviously, she hasn't come back to my office.  There's a reason why this stuff is taken out of the hands of the parents in these situations.  For all this woman wanted to protect her 12 year old, he needed help, too, and it was very likely someone had hurt him sometimes in the past.

ETA: as far as mandated reporters, it varies from state to state, but Arkansas does list clergy; so JB's preacher buddies were breaking the law as was his state trooper pal when they didn't call the appropriate authorities in.  It doesn't matter if the cop is off duty or child molestation is not his jurisdiction; it doesn't matter if the clergy member hears about it outside the confessional or in casual conversation; they are held to a higher standard.

In the US, any law officer is required to report child abuse to the proper authorities, no matter how he or she finds out about it.  So, JB should've had no expectation of maintaining privacy when he contacted his friend.  The fact that the cop friend never reported the behavior implies to me, anyway, that JB went to him knowing that he would keep quiet even though it was against the law.  You don't tell a police officer about a crime that you or a loved one has committed and not expect to be prosecuted.

In the US, we generally don't refer to doctors as 'consultants' which is a general term indicating anyone with some sort of expertise whose opinion you might seek.  As far as the legal aspects of child molestation, I wouldn't think a doctor would be the first one I'd consult for expertise.

But a consultant psychiatrist/attending physician would be knowledgeable enough to be consulted on the statistics relating to the reporting of child abuse by parents and the factors that influence that reporting, right? Or at least know where the journal articles on that subject are?

In my experience, fundie Baptist style ‘Church elders’ are unpaid volunteers, and don’t have any real status as ‘clergy’.  If he had spoken to ‘the minister ‘, then yes, I would think it likely that person would know their responsibility.  (This may depend on denomination and official status, but I’m pretty sure a home church doesn’t bother with niceties like actual training or making sure they hew to any standard other than the Bible.)
