S01.E13: Love Is In The Air

After 25 years of marriage, Jesse and Becky return to San Francisco to renew their vows

A 25 year renewal without Danny or their twin boys? Where are Nicky & Alex supposed to be attending college?

Kimmy running away with every "I do" was annoying.

DJ choosing DJ was predictable since it's only season 1.

Nicky and Alex not being there didn't make any sense.  They are still in college in San Fran, at least for a little while longer.  If you're going to make a big deal about bringing everyone back at least use them for more than one episode.

I'd like to believe that if this show gets renewed that there will be more opportunities for Nicky and Alex to reappear and visit their cousins.

I actually thought that we would see more of them through the season since they are the other family members who are still in town.  I could see them filling the "big brother" role for the kids.  If they weren't going to use them, they should of just had them go to LA with the rest of the family.  To make a mention of them staying in town and then to never see them for the rest of the season seemed like a mistake.

Yeah, this is one of three real Turkey episodes of the 13 (the first, the wrestling episode, and this one). Very little of this was good, or in fact made any sense at all.

Yeah, Jesse and Becky renewing their vows without the boys makes no sense, but I chalk up the lack of Nicky and Alex beyond the first episode as just the casting realities. The Tuomy-Wilhoit boys -- sorry, men -- aren't actors. I love that they returned anyway for the pilot episode (*ahem* Mary Kate and Ashley *ahem*) but I didn't really expect to see them again. Still, if they weren't going to have Nicky and Alex be here in a situation where they should be here, they could have at least made up an excuse for why they couldn't make it.

I also agree that this episode was one of the weaker ones in a season that surprisingly wasn't entirely awful-tastic. DJ picking herself was predictable (and another retread) but it was the only way. If the show actually gets a second season, though, I hope we get to see more of Steve. I love me some Steven Hale. Still trying to wrap my head around the idea that he became a podiatrist. That's a doctor. Steve became a doctor. Steve.

The real standouts on this show, for me, are Stephanie and Max. Jodie Sweetin is a surprisingly good actress with great comedic timing. If this show doesn't pan out for long I'd really like to see her get more roles in other shows. And Elias Harger just steals every scene. Loved him. We'll definitely be seeing more of him. And, shockingly, I'm quite fond of Fernando. He's basically a cartoon version of every character in a 1980s telenovela, but he cracks me up.

I liked the little scene between Kimmy and Max about him being sad she (and Ramona) were leaving.  I feel like they didn't spend enough time this season showing Kimmy forming her own separate bonds with DJ's kids.

Finally, the first original they drop the obnoxious cheering on is Joey. I also don't believe that Danny wouldn't come for the Jesse/Becky renewals. If Becky can get time off, so can Danny.

Honestly, I loved Steve in the original, but I don't really like him here. He's too much of a comic relief, so it has turned him into a selfish dick, for me. He's almost always putting Matt down, in every opportunity. I think the fact that he kept getting in the way when he was in the same episode as Matt just put me off. HOWEVER, I loved when Steve called DJ by her full name, and I love that him and Matt are going to start bonding.

Fernando dropped all the points by mentioning Fifty Shades of Grey, not that he had much going for him. I also wish we saw more hesitation from Kimmy before the vows. I mean, we saw outright refusal to outright love so quickly in this series, but whatever, that's a nitpick for me. Also, if he just signed the papers, don't they have to make it more official by putting them through a divorce lawyer before they're officially divorced?

I think the "divorce" was just a play on words as was the "marriage".  Kimmie and Fernando are still married.  Even if he signed the divorce papers they need to be filed and go through the process.  From the end of the show it seemed like Kimmie and Fernando are going to date and just keep it open and see how it goes before they decide to get back together.  I thought that was a nice compromise.  Fernando is a race car driver and travels a lot so that will explain him not being on every episode, but when in town he can still be around for Kimmie and Ramona, without them having to move out of the Fuller house.

I think the lack of important family members was only part of the problem.

Kimmie ruining their renewal really sucked.

That's certainly what I came away thinking! Like, how rude! I can't believe she ate that cake too.

I used to wonder why the adults hated her so much, but during that ceremony I clearly  understood why. Uncle Jesse was right not to want to get stuck with that bill.

DJ's a coward and horrible stringing both guys along and both guys are saps for allowing themselves to be strung along. And in the end she essentially reset everything for a new round of stringing these dudes along again. "I choose me!" Hahahahaha! Okay, Kelly Taylor.

I'm with Lola. That entire family is creepo creepy.

And Stephanie...she is the farthest thing from hip and cool. She has terrible taste in everything including music and it's completely unbelievable, though I'm okay with that for this self-aware best worst television that is so bad that it's awesome...but it's really hard to accept her background/aspect more than others. No DJ would ever take her seriously. It's just...unrealistic. She's a play/stop DJ which I do understand is now en vogue with a surplus of talentless hacks thanks to the Paris Hilton celebudj fad where it's more important to bop your head than wear headphones or beat match. Anywho, I digress. While her type of DJ does exist in the world today, it's pretty unanimously frowned upon except by club owners, promoters, and the starfuckers...but by actual music people, totally nope. Stephanie is lame. She is the exact person and type that goes to these things, gets caught up in the scene, becomes a part of not the scene though thinks it is because of the aesthetics of the scene, and is discredited and made fun of by the actual scene.

Anyways, I like that she's getting past that and if this aunt aspect is to parallel Uncle Jesse, then it makes sense with his Elvis fixation and the Rippers. They're both kinda pretty lame musically and total products of suburban kids that grew up and think they earned street cred and worldliness. So it works. I guess my problem is with how THAT world reacts and treats them. The show doesn't adequately convey or portray that Stephanie and Jesse are deluded because the faceless people around them cheering them on aren't credible either, though the implication is there that they represent some authenticity, e.g., Macy Gray, Coachella, her British buddy. And there's also the attention to details like DJs stopping music immediately and if they actually do resume it starts up again as if from the exact same spot paused and most importantly, it's funny how she's always able to start spinning at the drop of the hat anywhere and everywhere without us ever seeing her cart around equipment, turntables, laptops and ESPECIALLY NO RECORDS, haha. We never even see her with the gear around the house, no practicing, nor any indication that she is a record store junkie/collector.

I think the "divorce" was just a play on words as was the "marriage".

But then at the end they agreed to remain "engaged," which also makes no sense, since they were separated and not divorced.

The original Full House always had big issues with continuity (girlfriends, aunts, and grandparents disappearing, for example), but it feels like they put less care into this finale than the other episodes this season. They sprung for on-location filming in the baseball episode, but have to hold a wedding in the Tanner's back yard? Joey's wedding ring was also prominently on display here, which makes it even stranger that they cut out all the references to his family. Meh.

I took the "engaged" to mean that they are going to give it another try but not jump back into "married life".  Sort of like when your separated from someone for a long time, you may decide to "date" on another again as opposed to jumping back into your previous relationship.  Which makes sense with the premise of Kimmie and Ramona staying with the Fullers instead of going on the road/moving back in with Fernando, and Kimmie realizing that she is a different person and likes a lot of her life now.  Yeah her and Fernando are still married, but are agreeing that they are taking things slow and to see how they develop, no promises.

I didn't mind the fact that there were family members missing... Sitcoms aren't designed to handle 15 characters at a time. One episode a season with everyone in it is fine for this reboot.

(Btw, I predict that those grown twins are strong enough performers to hold their own subplots.)

I thought the "I choose me" was a nod towards another 90s Classic, 90210. It got a chuckle out of me, especially when one of the guys said something like, "She chose herself? Who DOES that?"

I believe that was actually a callback to when DJ did it 20 years ago when choosing between Nelson and Viper, she decided to not date either of them in January of 1995 (barely beating Kelly by 4 months).

But then at the end they agreed to remain "engaged," which also makes no sense, since they were separated and not divorced.

But they were divorced, Fernando finally signed the divorce papers in the previous episode.

I was surprised by how non-wacky Kimmy's wedding dress was, she looked lovely.

Signing divorce papers doesn't make you divorced.  There is a whole process that happens after the papers are signed.  Considering Fernando "signed' them as a way to lead into the "engagement". I don't think that we the audience were supposed to interpret that as a proper intention.   I seriously doubt that he and Kimmie filed the paperwork after they agreed to take things slow.

In essence, Kimmie and Fernando "getting married" was about symbolism, since they are still legally married.  It was a gesture to them getting back together.

That final season with DJ's rich nerd boyfriend really was bad.

I remember I thought Viper(David Lipper) was so hot. Then he looked weird. Then he looked good again. Now apparently he looks kind of like a poor man's Patrick Wilson. (I'm shocked his career actually lasted past the 90's, yet his peak is still basically Full House and the Lifetime movie where he raped Valerie Malone. Also, getting burned alive in a hot spring on Dante's Peak.)

It's kind of funny that twenty years ago, Viper's lone little tattoo was edgy. Now preppy college boys and sorority girls have tattoos everywhere. Look at One Direction or Justin Bieber.

All I can say is that I hope for more next season with Stephanie. I was disappointed that there was no clear direction with her character.

Fuller House was much like Full House...corny but nice to pass the time watching.

My theory is that the producers were waiting to see how Jodie did this season before they threw more at her. I'd guess we'll see more of her in season two.

I assume they didn't know how popular it would be on Netflix and maybe the budget wasn't big enough to bring everyone in or scheduling issues. The adults from the old show only signed on for cameos so that could have been an issue, but it's been renewed. Maybe we'll get more. Someone pointed out Danny not being at the renewal. If he and Becky are co-hosts, the powers that be at the LA station probably wouldn't let it happen. Look at most morning shows. You never see all of the regular hosts away at the same time, so I'll give them a pass for that. You wouldn't see "Kelly & Michael" without at least Kelly or Michael. Regarding the twins, do we know they go to school in the bay area? Maybe I missed that. I'm willing to give this show some of a pass since it seemed that they weren't sure how popular it would be. Steve is a bit annoying. lol

That would make sense. It would suck if she pulled a Lindsay Lohan, but thankfully she seems to have her head on straight right now.

The fact that the same twin boys even agreed to show up on the show is something and puts the Olsen twins "they don't remember much about Full House" reasoning as lame because the Wilhoit twins are even younger than the Olsen twins.

To be fair, the Olsen twins have a lot more going on than the Wilhoit twins.  No shade to them, they seemed to have turned out to be really nice men with happy lives.  The real question is, if the other actors were running an empire would they have signed up to do the reboot?

I kind of feel bad for John Stamos that he hasn't really been able to lead a successful hit show since Full House,. He does a lot of guest spots and of course his Greek yogurt commercials, but he hasn't really set the world on fire. He's kind of famous for being famous, and still managing to keep up the looks that made him famous in the first place.

Yeah, he had a nice little run on ER before it went off the air and that show Grandfathered seemed like it had good reviews if not ratings.  I'm surprised one of these CW shows hasn't snatched him up to either play into his looks as the aging Playboy or the hot dad to one of their teen shows.

I could totally see him in the remake of Dynasty.  He could of easily played the Grant Show role or hell bring him in as a rival to Grant's character.

John Stamos seems to be reasonably well-regarded when he pops up on Broadway. I did a double-take when I went to see The Best Man in summer 2012 and he turned out to be in it (James Earl Jones had top billing) but John Stamos did a fine job.
