Discussion of the hosts regarding a specific episode is fine here, but generalized discussion of the hosts go in the The Hosts Thread: Joe and Mika Know Their Value.

Good God! I tuned in first thing and heard Meeka talking pickle ball; and Joe was talking canasta. Dropped by toward the end of the 8:00 hour and they were talking about pickle ball and canasta. Are they back to rerunning the 6:00 hour? Please tell me this cannot be true - not for the boatload of money and ego/power trip that the network gave Joe.

What - no pinochle??? 😮😉😂 Seriously, MSNBC extended the show to four hours for all this scintillation???

Joe & Mika in mystery location today, Lemire in NYC. Willie AWOL - I think he might be on vacation

Michael Steele is here!! I love him. Theory about what happened to teh text messages:

Julia Ainsley & Barb McQuade also here, yay!

they're speculating about Bannon's accessorizing, and I think the ballpoint pens might be for jousting. Of course those giant-ass medieval lances used in mounted combat were obviously phallic symbols so IDK what conclusions we should draw re: the pens.

Cannot help myself. Tuned in at 6 - Meeka’s hair was in the regular bob. Tuned in at 8 - different clothes and an updo. Didn’t stick around either time so I didn’t listen to discussion; so maybe I didn’t see what I thought I did at 6.  Am I crazy? Or just not fully awake at the early hour? Or just wanting to see something to snark on. And I why do I care?

plumbago b - thanks for posting the tidbit on CNN wanting to woo them away from MSNBC. Which gives Joe even more power. He can basically write his own contract, knowing his network doesn’t want to lose him to their competition.

But seriously- am I seeing/imagining things?

Hmm, I don't think so. probably she just rolled up her sleeves and pulled her hair back in the commercial break to give Joe a good thrashing for some stupid shit he said, which is what I imagine she does every break, heh

I can't believe this hearing is gonna be in prime time, finallyyyyy normal humans get to watch live!!

I think your theory is as good as anything! I adore both Michael Steele and Barbara McQuade. However, I don't think I have ever seen them in the same panel. Or maybe I have and just wasn't paying attention.

Both are infinitely more likable and watchable than Mr. and Mrs. Scarborough, who are too wealthy and clueless to really be in touch with their audience. Still, it's watchable enough to keep on while I get ready for work in the morning. Someone give poor Mr. Lemire a raise for all the hours he pulls in for this network!!!

She basks when he says “stupid shit” … the other day he was bloviating and she giggled/scolded “stawp”. Twice. I give credit - she is an excellent husband picker. Joe rules the network; she has gravitas. She should sit the Kardashians down and give them a lecture on picking significant others. Just saying. 🤓

You're not crazy, the show is psychotic. A boatload of repeat segments (they're dying without Willie and I think Lemire is asking an MSNBC nurse to place him in a medically induced coma by 8:15 every morning). Mika just up and left at one point last week and she now frequently appears mid-show with the Mystery Updo.

Hey, the world's falling apart - let's pay a couple of folks $8 million to not come into the office and PRE-RECORD THE NEWS.

I flove Steele. I appreciate that Joy is not adverse to making bold blouse choices (but I think tonight's plaid was a mistake).

Speaking of jousting, favorite Bannon joke that lives in my head: "Trump asked Steve Bannon for his resignation so he'd be free to go find the cure for greyscale."

Joe and Mika both just disappeared at 7.30 a.m. and have been awol for half an hour, with no explanation. Willie still awol so it's literally just Lemire, hosting by himself, doing some very lengthy reading.

Um, are they coming back or...?

eta: oh i think Joe is back now. High-lemann is here, thank god for that at least!! but I hope Mika comes back

eta2: Mika is now back. man this is all very confusing

I don’t watch that frequently anymore - maybe two or three times a month. It struck me today how much Mika seems to be patterning her on-air demeanor on Joe’s. Now it’s not just sighs, but also talking over people, having her own rants, and cutting people off. Do we really need two Joes?  And this leaning forward into the camera - what’s up with that? Today, when she interviewed Rep. Luria she did a mini-rant lead into a question.

Honestly, Joe and Mika should go to Licht’s CNN. They pull this stuff every time. Last time, they were going to CBS. It’s ridiculous. Just give the show to Steph Ruhle and Ali Velshi. That would be a smart, informative show.

in fairness, Joe annoys me a lot when he's yelling but I actually think he is very funny, even when he says stupid shit, heh. In one way it kinda works because it creates this atmosphere where the guests put their guards down and as a result say more interesting stuff and are um, less guarded in their observations.

It's also why i hate when they don't welcome guests bc many of their guests are visibly nervous and I'm such a snowflake I always notice. Again comfortable guests = more interesting guests imo

Can i just say, I wish they had given Jonathan Swan a lot more time this morning. They only let him say 2-3 sentences but it was freakin ALARMING. I literally sat us and said *what??*

They just duck in and out like they're at a Laugh-In cocktail party. Ooh, they're changing the Brady Bunch box placement in the 8 o'clock hour to make this segment look new!

I am underwhelmed by their coverage of the hearings. At the same time, its maddening that the actual president has covid but it's not covered until 7:57AM. If they need to focus three and a half hours on Trump then give good time to Swan and Cohen, who are ringing the proper alarms. Joe & Mika really need to return to the studio - its inexcusable at this point.

Joe and Meeka returning to the studio will never happen; those days are gone forever.  I am sure that CNN (and Chris Licht) would love to have them.  But I wonder if the honchos there would be willing to give Joe everything MSNBC has.  CNN is not exactly rolling in extra money these days.

The bit that I watched today - Joe was introducing Heilemann; he started talking and Joe jumped in and interrupted.  Heilemann kept talking, I guess hoping Joe would shut up.  Did not happen.  So they discussed Joe's point.  Whatever it was.

Not sure what the fire icon/emoji means, but I'm going with Mad as Hell.  I wish J&M would get off my screen.  The black clothes every day - Meeka you are not Rachel.  Not even close.  Give us some colors!  It's JULY for lordy sakes, and the world is on fire.  We could use a little joy.  Joe's constant interruption of guests, including his wife, is maddening.  He is SO rude.  And what other hosts are allowed to broadcast from little boxes.  Get back in the studio!  If you insist on living in Florida (to avoid higher taxes) the build a studio there are invite guest to your set.  I'm sure some of them will travel to the Sunshine State at some point.  Okay, rant over.  I think.

I just cannot grasp this, even if it's a negotiation tactic to light a fire under the butt of MSNBC. When Joe is actually working he barely puts in two hours on his eponymous show, he doesn't appear with any other contributors (even his wife!) and he's allegedly asking MSNBC for $30 million a year. He's spent the last five years devoting almost the entirety of each episode to Trump - first promoting, then admonishing him (firmly and forever refusing to acknowledge the former action). And he seems to get crankier & more dismissive over time. I'm not understanding why the network that's refusing to allow anchors to say "big lie" wants him (or that payroll addition as @Kemper mentioned) on their roster.

2am: oh wow, Jonathan Lemire must have a vacation week!
3am: oh, he’s filling in for JOE.

He’s helming alone and Elise Jordan is a guest, but what I wouldn’t GIVE to see him and Elise be subbing and really start acting like Joe and Mika in classic slap-and-tickle Twins style.  I mean The Twins are  so goofy we expect nonsense from them. But can you just imagine anyone else?

JONATHAN: “when I was in Congress….” *drones on forever* “don’t make me backhand you, Elise!”

ELISE: “Staaahp!”, giggles, makes irritated noises about sports, asks “what are movies?”, mispronounces everything.

Nonstop flirting, inappropriate jokes about the weatherman, they randomly disappear and reappear, etc.

I’m probably sleep deprived but the idea of this had me in stitches.

idk, I like Joe and Mika because they make their particular brand of crazy work for them.

It's true that no one else could do that which it's why it's so weird and interesting . like i was saying before it creates an atmosphere that draws out different sides of guests. But yeah, like all of you, i miss a real NYC-based show, with the boxes it's really not the same.

I thought Lemire did a good job today but I wish they'd put Elise next to him as a co-host. Usually the show is Joe, Mika, Willie, Lemire, so technically they're now down minus - 3 hosts and Lemire looks too much like McCauley Culkin dabbing on teh aftershave. If they gave him a cohost it would look more intentional and we-got-this and less yikes home alone. But in general actually he was very good and tbh his reading is muchly improved, he enunciates well and no longer sounds like he's had twenty cans of redbull, heh.

i was kinda on my way out, it was like 8.30 when they announced about Mika's mom passing - I honestly hadn't heard this. So heartbreaking & condolences to Mika & Joe & family.

I think I've said this before but Mrs Brzezinski was easily the most talented member of that family. They showed that tribute to her w footage from her studio and the sheer intensity and physicality is damn impressive - she was in noisy conditions, breathing in sawdust, wielding a literally life-threatening tool and yet her work was so precise and intuitive, like every piece is a sort of fine-tuned meditation.

They showed a photo of that one large-scale piece that's been featured a lot on MJ and elsewhere - I think she called it Lament - and I viscerally remember the first time I saw a photo of it and thought "it's the three Marys" like literally before they told us the title - she was able to instantly evoke that universal iconography through positioning and following the natural lines of the wood. i almost feel a bit emotional typing it bc it takes a crazy amount of talent to do something like that.

I caught a bit of today’s show with J Lemire and company. There was a wonderful piece on foreclosures; some fresh faces. An actual discussion with no interruptions - the interviewees were given the time they needed to make the point; and bring viewers into the story.

oh man, today essentially Elise was there the whole morning with Lemire, for four hours - welcoming and interviewing guests, keeping the convo moving, even promoting Lemire's book -

hi, hello, she was literally co-hosting the show, except she didn't get the visibility of a seat at the head of the table and she didn't get the "alongside" introduction, and god only knows what her compensation situation was, probably she wasn't getting paid for co-host subbing which is literally what she was doing.

agggh! this stuff matters! where is Mika and her project with this type of thingy that's literally happening within her physical jurisdiction!!

also for me I have a kinda Tuesday! tradition! where I listen to the new High-lemann podcast on my commute home --->

aaaand after all this week's over-exposure, today's podcast guest was....Jonathan Lemire! I'm laughing so hard

In fairness, it was a truly excellent interview. Mainly bc High-lemann is a freakin amazing podcaster. For me I only have two complaints - one is,  Grace is awesome and if she's gonna be a regular can she please have better audio, she sounds kinda crinkly and absent-ish like she's on the phone. whatever gear she needs to do her job properly, give it to herrrr

And also. Like literally every classics! geek! in the universe, I read the entirety of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire so  *small voice* the "your generation" shit is a lil condescending and you could just let human judgments be human judgments, because we are all very different at all ages --> and tbh that difference is literally what makes life interesting.

8 days since the last post?   What happened here?  I now watch only when something big's going on, but am heartened to see that even in the rapidly-developing news climate of the past 48 hours, Miss Mika never disappoints when reading editorials on air.

Mika, if you're reading, the word "wizened" isn't pronounced like "wise."  It's "wiz."   And I'm afraid "caste" doesn't rhyme with "waste."

I fell off for a while but I watched all four hours today!

bc I was *small voice* stuck in an airport buuuut luckily I am a rational human with a normal understanding of cause and effect so I don't blame Mayor Pete for it

Today in This Show is Your Crazy Uncle ---> they had 17 male guests and 1 female guest!

so I guess we've hit Peak Patriarchy

in fairness the one! female! guest! was the badass Ali Vitali who is definitely smarter than 17 men put together, but what even is this 🥴 I kept thinking, they did this very condescending segment on MJ a few weeks ago where it was like why aren't women "these days" supporting our corporate! feminisim! ---> yes, hi, because of shit like this.

it's just that maybe it's different in different professions or something but for many of us the policy of women shouldn't be seen because colors are bad, or something, and women shouldn't be heard, because Joe's Yelling Is More Important etc etc is so counter-intuitive. So we don't feel like it's inclusive of us because what we see is not corresponding to the message. Shouldn't it be more important to celebrate the women who are there and make them seen and heard and also maybe include more of them when the ratio is 17:1 🥴

There was even a segment today when two! men! came on to discuss the teacher shortage! and one of them even said the "teaching profession is 85% women", well I squinted at my screen but I didn't see any

Altho not to snark too much. Joe was in fine form today. I prefer Crazy! But Affable! Joe to Cicero-Joe. I wanna hear the Vance impersonation! they keep refering to it but we never actually hear it, so how can we know whether it's good or bad! damnit

Willie is a perfect and adorable human.

but man oh man I wish they would do a real table conversation-show soon, the real shows are the only thing that make sticking around for the boring newsreading box shows worth it tbh. it's been three months *cries*
