The writing on this show, IMO, has gotten so scattered. I'm still confused about what they're doing with everyone's love life. It feels sudden and messy all around. I did like the whole subplot about Petra not being who she used to be five years ago. And I'm glad Rose is still Bridget! I liked the stepdaughter reveal, too.

As a divorced woman in her 40's who had her child young and has faced those same dating trials, I so feel for Xiomara.

I like that they're addressing the fact that while she may have made the decision to wait until marriage, Jane is still a young woman with a healthy and more importantly, completely normal sex drive.

This show used to be must see tv but Jane's schizophrenic love life is making me dread these episodes. Everything else is great, and Mateo is seriously the cutest TV baby ever, but can't she be single for an episode instead of obsessing about a guy?

Love Petra.

I feel like Greg from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend where this show is my Rebecca.  I need to stop watching this show yet I watch and remain disappointed and then feel mad that I watched.

I agree that Jane's romantic life is a mess.  It really doesn't matter that Chavez isn't her professor any longer.  It's still looked on as not great, if not outright prohibited, that a faculty member not date a current student.  And after turning Michael and Rafael down, she's considering having sex with a guy she's not even really dating?  It's not that I'm opposed to her decision but she just swings back and forth in who she wants to be with and what she wants her relationships to look like.

Then let's look at Rogelio and Xiomara.  How can Xio think that she and Rogelio are ready for marriage when I don't know that they've worked through anything that made them hesitate before.  She's turning 40 and Rogelio is talking about raising kids together.  For real? She wasn't gung ho when it was first mentioned.  This seems like something to discuss before a proposal.

And finally, this Rafael/Petra mess.  I feel like they want to rehab Petra before taking her down again and they're using Rafael to do it.  I know I sound like a broken record but it's one thing to forgive an affair or even being targeted for his money but it's quite another to just forget the drugging and sperm stealing.

And so is Rose Rafael's sister?

Didn't really like this episode.

Jane's relationship drama and dating her Prof was predictable.

I felt bad for Rogelio. For how he was treated by everyone this episode. Jane over Mateo. Xo over the party/proposal.

The whole twist of Elena/Rose being family is just too much, makes the whole thing even more confusing.

I liked Petra and her statue. lol Showing how she changed. Petra's story was the only one I really liked this episode.

Seems like a more or less accurate description of one's twenties to me.

For some.  Definitely not my twenties.  Or my group of friends.  I don't relate to it which, in itself, isn't awful.  But if I don't relate to something, I need to be entertained by it and this season it fails on that level for me.

Sigh. I was getting attached to Luisa and Barnett and they're over already? As much as I like Rose, Luisa needs someone stable at this point.

I don't think they're over.  Barnett just seems to be very practical and turned her down for the same reasons Petra turned down Rafael.  I think Luisa and Barnett have a  shot once Luisa gets this closure.  Rafael & Petra need to stay dead.

Petra really has changed so much over the show. I liked being reminded about how she used to be, and how far she has come. She still certainly has her manipulative streak, but she is clearly a better, more sympathetic person now.

Poor Rogelio. At least he got to meet a fan. That should put him in a slightly better mood.

Adam Rodriguez is phoning in this role, IMO. I do think he was better when he shared scenes with others aside from just Jane/Gina Rodriguez, but maybe he's as dispassionate about this storyline as I am.

I'm all in for Jaime Camil. He makes this show for me. Aside from the recent reveal about Rose/Mutter, nothing else is really holding my attention.

At this point, I am only in it for Rogelio. Does every guy have to fall for Jane? It's getting a little old. Can she not have an unrelated, straight, male friend/mentor? I also think all the ping ponging back and forth between guys makes her look bad. Maybe it's a symptom of being young but it makes her look indecisive and her feelings for all these men must be so shallow. I will be way less sympathetic to her during her next break up.

eta: I am about the same age as Jane so I can't accept the ping ponging as age/immaturity.

Rogelio is my favorite character followed immediately by the narrator; I love when he gets excited about stuff - like when the professor "scootched" over on the couch - he is too adorable.

I still enjoy it though - I'm not invested in any way in Jane or her love life or really any of the characters beyond a general liking of the show overall - but I enjoy it because it is one of a handful of non-crime investigation shows, has no constant torture porn (except when Petra's mom gets angry....) -

I knew as soon as Rogelio mentioned looking forward to kids - that that would be the issue.

Amen. Right now I'm rooting for both Michael and Rafael to move on and Jane to die a 92 year old virgin.

I liked his reaction when he watched his mom swoon over Rogelio. It was like it was the first time he'd realized she was a woman. It's a bit uncomfortable at first when you're old enough to see your parents are fully human.

I absolutely loved this episode. I care approximately zero about Jane's love life, but I find all the little details delightful. Examples:

1. Mateo's face when Rogelio asked what happened to the diamond. I wonder how long they had to keep a camera on that kid to get all the perfect reaction shots.

2. The car gps/backup guidance system voice talking Jane through getting away from Prof. She was hilarious!

3. Rafael flashbacks to sleazedom. He was such a creep! And yet hot. Usually creepiness kills any degree of hotness to me.

4. All Jane's thoroughly uncomfortable moments with the professor. I don't know why she thought she should feel out the situation, nor why Xo was encouraging her. Jane, honey, a professor who hits on his student or allows himself to be hit on is not a catch; he's a creep. Doesn't matter if he isn't her advisor anymore, she's still a student and it's a no. If it's meant to be, it will wait a year or two until she finishes the program, and if it's only fling material, why risk your career over it? I know student-teacher relationships are pretty common in the real world, but they are still UGH and someone like Jane should be aware of how UGH they are.

5. Loved the visit to Rogelio's set. I still wish we'd see more of the show he's filming. Maybe it isn't airing yet, and when it does we'll get bits of the family gathered around the television to watch.

6. Rogelio's tweets that Jane's phone was reading to her in the car.

Also I loved the shirt Jane was wearing at the beginning, with the blue embroidery.

Agreed,  I am not sure if we're supposed to think Adam Rodriguez's character is likable or a good fit  but the whole prof situation automatically puts me edge.

Jane's way into romance stories, and the "sexy professor" is a stock plot in those, so I kind of buy that she wouldn't necessarily think it was a problem.

You guys are a tough audience.  I still love this show, no matter how inconsistent things are, or what is going on in Jane's love life.  I love Gina Rodriguez and all of the little Mateos.  (I could really tell the difference between them in different scenes, which I never noticed before.)

Xiomara sang "Close to You", which my mom used to sing to me when I was a baby.  Loved it.

I definitely don't think Luisa and Susanna are over. Like Susanna said, it's not their time right now. Bridget Regan seems to be a really busy actress, so I doubt she's back for more than a few episodes, and Luisa will get the closure she needs. As Michael's partner, Susanna's not going anywhere.

I thought it was amusing that Rafael and Luisa, who seem to have the same level of ability to bed practically anyone they want, got turned down in adjacent scenes and for the same reason.

Michael's face when Luisa was going on about the inappropriateness of the Rose and Elena connection was hilarious - it was like he was thinking of the Luisa/Rose thing too as the flashbacks were playing. Oh, Luisa. I'm glad Yara Martinez seems to have more time to do JtV this year.

I also really enjoyed Rafael/Petra. They have terrific chemistry and light up around each other. It was interesting that the idea of a reunion seemed to have gone completely out of Petra's mind before that kiss. I would've expected her to be micro-analyzing everything Rafael was saying and doing throughout the episode, the way Jane was with the professor. Even when Raf put his leg against Petra she still didn't see the kiss coming.

Poor Xo and Rogelio. She was so happy to get his proposal and he was so happy that she was going to say yes, and then the kids thing dropped.

Jane's storylines continue to be as dull as dishwater. I know it makes sense given her career goals for her to be TAing, but her no longer working at the Marbella has created a lot of structural problems.

And so is Rose Rafael's sister?

I feel the same about Rafael and Petra. I wonder if the writers were not taken a bit by surprise at how much people like her as a character (love to hate her, sympathise with her struggles). The writing certainly suggests that. I wish they'd just leave the two of them as friends.

I think Rose is Rafael's step sister? They have the same mom but not the same dad. But what is Rose in relation to Luisa? Mutter is mother to all three (Rose, Rafael and Luisa), no?

I don't think they're over.  Barnett just seems to be very practical and turned her down for the same reasons Petra turned down Rafael.  I think Luisa and Barnett have a  shot once Luisa gets this closure.  Rafael & Petra need to stay dead.

Amen to that! I like Barnett and Luisa together, kind of a bad girl good girl thing going on. And yes on Petra and Rafael!

Is it just me, or does anyone else find Raphael infinitely more attractive in flashbacks when he's in schemer, player mode. Raphael as Mr  Niceguy just seems a little dull.

Well, I find him hot no matter what so... ;)

Yes to your entire post but especially to these two points! That Mateo is a cutie pie, and the faces he made while listening to Rogelio talk, then when he swallowed the diamond... It was just too precious!

I am not invested in anything with this show other than to watch for details and to have fun. The narrator is hilarious, Rogelio is hilarious (even my hubby who hates soaps loves Rogelio!), the relationship between the three Villanueva women is beautiful, and the growth of Petra, Rafael, Luisa and others have been fun to watch. Ok, full discloser, I want Jane and Rafael together. :) But yeah, to me, this show is fun, and while there are serious and touching moments throughout, it's mainly just that, FUN!

No, Luisa's mom was Mia (from the mental hospital who escaped and died 8 years ago), Rafael's Mom is Mutter, and Mutter was Rose's step mother (so her mother by marriage). So she's not genetically linked to any of them.

If Mutter was Rose's stepmother, then for the time she was married to Rose's father, Rafael was technically Rose's stepbrother, although he and his mother were estranged at the time. "Step" is related by marriage, not genetics. If Rose and Rafael had shared one biological parent but not two, they would be half brother/half sister.

Jane is flip flopping between guys because she's horny. She's 24 and has never had sex and she just had a baby. Those hormones are going crazy in there. Once I realised that this episode (although they did kind of spell it out for me) her behaviour this season makes way more sense. Especially her deciding Michael was THE ONE despite all evidence to the contrary. Because Michael was the easy choice. It's my completely subjective opinion that Rafael is the one she loves and wants to be with but it's just too complicated for her post-baby, hormone brain to navigate.

I enjoyed this episode up until the Raf/Petra kiss. I get what they're doing. These two used to be married and now she's pregnant with his children and they run a hotel together and they're spending lots of emotionally-charged time together. But things she has done are actually unforgivable. And I'm usually all for televisual redemption. But those babies? Are there because of a gross betrayal of trust. And possibly an illegal one.

Often when people are swooning over tv babies and how cute they are, I'm silently in the corner thinking about how unattractive the baby is. But the babies playing Mateo are adorable!

One thing I like is both Xio and Jane being so persistent about pursuing their dreams. Even though I loathe Jane lusting after her advisor and most of the storylines that have resulted since she was accepted to grad school (Oh noes, I have to take summer school! My friend just exploited my baby daddy's family's history for personal gain! I have to teach a bunch of jocks who don't want to take my class!), I like that she acknowledges it's hard to be in school with a young child but that she's making it happen anyway.

Similarly, I am glad that Xiomara is at a place in her life where she can choose to concentrate on her career rather than resigning herself to a job that just pays the bills (although at this point, I have no idea how the Villanueva women can afford their rent and food and clothes).

On a related note, I am glad that both Jane and Xiomara are open to re-evaluating their lives, their goals, etc. It's okay to think you're open to having more kids and then decide that you don't want any more kids. You're allowed to change your mind. Better that Xiomara realized it now so that Rogelio can decide if that's a dealbreaker for him. And I like that one of the reasons that Xiomara has come to this conclusion is that she wants to be able to put more energy into being a singer. And at least she was honest with Rogelio (because you know on another soap opera, she would just marry him and then secretly stay on the pill for a few years until she's too old to get pregnant).

I'm REALLY glad that Jane is reconsidering staying a virgin until she gets married. I think it's a perfectly valid choice to make, but it's also okay to change your mind. I am really REALLY glad that she mentioned that it was a promise she made when she was ten years old. It's one thing to pledge to do something when you're ten and not fully aware of all that entails. I wasn't one of those girls who wore a purity ring but if you had asked me about sex when I was ten years old, I'm pretty sure I would have said ewww, not interested! I think it's great that she's rethinking her decision instead of just sticking to it because it's something she promised her grandmother when she was a little girl. Even if she ends up deciding to stay a virgin, at least she will be thinking about what the choice entails as a 24 year old woman and making a choice based on that instead of keeping the promise that she made as a child.

I have a huge issue with her dating her professor. Fine, she had a crush. It's his job as the professor and the person in a position of power to set boundaries and make it clear that this is not going to happen. Asking her out as soon as she has decided to get a new advisor doesn't make it okay. He is still a professor in her department.

Even though Jane is understandably uncomfortable with sharing the details of her dream with Xiomara as well as Xiomara acting like a 15 year old, I love that Xiomara gently encouraged Jane to reconsider her decision to stay a virgin until marriage. I hate Alba's pre-slut shaming with the flower.

I wish I could like this a hundred more times! It reminds me of how people think Ariz and Ezra on Pretty Little Liars are such a dreamy romantic perfect couple even though he was her high school English teacher. There's a reason why statuatory laws include relationships where the teenager is of the age of consent but the adult is in a position of power (meaning even if the teenager is 16/17 or whatever the age of consent is in that particular state, it's still illegal for a teacher/counselor/coach to have sex with them). The narrator referred to Jane and her professor as two consenting adults, but he is in a position of power which makes it gross and inappropriate. It's the same reason it's considered sexual harassment to have sex with someone who is your direct report.
