Best of Friends: Your Favorite Moments

Madness

One of things Friends did best was the Holy Shit moment - things you didn't see coming, when the whole studio audience gasped.   "Do you think he knew I was here", Monica popping up from under the covers in Chandler's hotel bed.   "I got off the plane", Rachel showing up at Ross' door.  "Oh my God", Ross is the father.   "You wanted it to be a surprise," when Chandler thought Monica had gone to her parents' house.

My favorite episode ever, though, is "The One Where Ross Got High." I laugh from start to end in that one. It's also one of my family's faves, and we quote the trifle bit all the time. "What's not to like? Custard, good. Jam, good. Meat, good!" Joey telling them how to act like they like the food, Ross's "What is with everyone today? It's Thanksgiving, not truth day!", the confessions and Mrs. Gellar's "That's a lot of information to get in 30 seconds," followed by, "Ross. Drugs. Divorced, again." The delivery is just great all the way through. "And Chandler. You've been Ross's friend all these years. Stuck by him through the drug problem." I just can't stop laughing.

I love the concerned way Mrs. Geller tells Phoebe that Jacques Cousteau is dead.

I'm a big fan of TOW Everybody Finds Out for all the reasons cited above.  But I think my all-time favorite has to be TOW the Videotape.    First off, any scene where Ross asks Joey for advice is usually gold, and this one is no exception:

Ross: I'm kind of going through a dry spell, sex wise.

Joey: Oh... for, like, months?

Ross: Five, to be... lying. Six.

Joey: Six months? Oh, that's rough.

Ross: No, I mean, it's not all bad. I'm learning to appreciate the small things in life, like the sound of a bird, and the color of the sky...

Joey: Sky's blue, Ross! And I had sex yesterday.

But mostly, I love the way the two set-ups (Joey and Phoebe explaining to Monica and Chandler that people do give out fake names, and the use of the Mount Tibidabo story) come together in this reveal:

Chandler: That's the magical story you use when you want to have sex.

Rachel: How do you know about that story?

Joey: How do YOU know about that story?

Rachel: I heard it from my friend Irene who heard it from some guy.

Joey: [raising his hand] some guy.

Rachel: No, she told me his name was Ken Adams.

Joey: [raising his hand again] Ken Adams.

That is the exact reason TOW the Videotape is probably my favorite episode: how all the plots dovetail into each other at the end. Hilariously.

That is so funny when they shake hands lol

My fave episode is where everybody finds out I could watch that again and again it's just too funny.

I like a lot of random scenes from

Different episodes like when Phoebe and Rachel take a class and read Wuthering Heights and Rachel takes Phoebes ideas and thoughts.

Or in after Vegas when they confront Rachel and Ross about getting married

I love reading this thread, just thinking of the moments makes me laugh out loud. Friends really does hold up well over time.

Ok, I love when Rachel plays the answering machine message (ok, a little dated LOL) for Monica of Emily saying she misses Ross, etc., and the two of them reverse their "phrases":

Monica: NOOOOOO!!

Rachel: I KNOW!!!

I can't remember the episode but I loved the scene where Emily calls, and Ross gets so excited that he just randomly picks up a lamp and hands it to Chandler. It's still one of the funniest moments of the show ever, to me.

Since I've been doing a rewatch, I have to add in a few not mentioned yet that kill me every time:

-Ross trying to pull up his leather pants.  That might be my favorite bit of physical comedy ever on the show.

-Ross playing bagpipes for Monica and Chandler's wedding, along with Phoebe "knowing the song" and just bleeting "EEEEE!  EEEEEE!"

-Phoebe's "dance" when she's trying to seduce Chandler.

-Just about everything in the Unagi episode, but especially when Ross has the conversation with the self-defense instructor on how to attack Rachel and Phoebe.  "You attacked your friends?"

"No, no,  I tried to attack them."

-When the guys play Bamboozled and get so into it, even though they can't really understand the game.

-When Chandler and Joey ride in victoriously after they've won the apartment from Monica and Rachel

Caught a few minutes of the episode TOW Joey Moves Out and forgot how funny the scenes involving the party and Jack and Judy and the conversation about Richard's twinkie in the city. Loved the lines where Ross had to say "Dad, I beg you not to finish that sentence" and then when he grabs the Harmon Killabrew bat away just before Richard and Monica (aka the Twinkie) tell them about their relationship. Some very clever writing in this one. "I hope you kids thanked Dr. Burke for the ride"

If they could have gotten rid of Joey and Chandler, it would have been even better.

Ross and Monica cleaning out their parents garage.

"My rock polisher!"

After Monica find out all her stuff has been destroyed she picks up something fuzzy and rubs it against her face.

"What do you think this was?"

"I think it was a mouse."

She screams, throws it across the room and rubs her face on Ross and I laugh and laugh.

I love that their dad finally realized how much Ross was favored over Monica (especially since at this point, the show was in its later years and we'd repeatedly been seeing it) and flat-out gave her the Porsche to make up for it.

I love any scene that portrays Ross and Monica as brother/sister, especially the part from TOW The Football where Chandler asks them if their mom said they couldn't play football, and they both said "Yes".

David Schwimmer is either an extremely talented actor or legitimately the most annoying human being of all time.  Either way, I loved and hated Ross Geller for all the same reasons so my favorite moments usually include him.

Unagi.  That's all.

Two of my favorite scenes come from the same episode.

Joey:  Monica got stung by a Jellyfish

Monica:  Alright!  Alright ....I got stung.  Stung bad.

She tells this story as though she were the last passenger picked up by the final U.S. chopper outta Saigon.  I'm doubled over every time I see it.

Ross:  by the way,  y-o-u apostrophe r-e means you are.  y-o-u-r means your!

Rachel:  hey those little spelling tips will come in handy when you're at home on Saturday nights playing scrabble with Monica!

Monica:  hey!!

Rachel:  sorry

Rachel:  I just feel bad about all that sleep your(e) gonna miss wishing you were with me

Ross:  oh no no no, don't you worry about me falling asleep, I. still. have. your. lett-er.

There are too many to have a favorite but:

Sophie. I love her. Even named my daughter after her (haha, not really, though that is her name)

The 20 questions game reminded me of my favorite of the Friends' work environments: Joanna and Sophie. Joanna's completely inexplicable hatred for Sophie was never not hysterical.

Something I noticed watching on Netflix - Chandler and Monica have this thing they do where they high-five each other after talking to each other.  The first time I noticed it was when they were talking to each other about the cameras and opening the presents after the wedding, but they do it a couple other times as well.  It's not like they set it up to do it - it's just a totally natural thing they do and really shows how together and comfortable they are with each other.

I was watching the episode where Chandler moves in with Monica and starts to clean everything, then Ross scares him into thinking that Monica will be mad at him, and the conversation where Chandler is trying to keep Monica out of the apartment makes me cry laughing every time:

Chandler: Don't come in here, Ross is naked!

Ross: (silently) What?

Chandler: Well, I couldn't tell her I was naked, she's allowed to see me naked!

Ross: Why does anybody have to be naked?

I just love how annoyed Ross sounds, but then he still goes along with it to help out Chandler.  "I had to show him something."

I'm on Season 2 of my rewatch now, and I had totally forgotten about this one moment from...I think it was "TOW Dr. Ramoray Dies," where Phoebe suggests to Chandler that he try to get to know Eddie better. At first she acts like she's going to stick around and chat with them, but she actually leaves. Her excuse? "I'm late for my Green Eggs and Ham discussion group. Yeah, this week it's 'why he would not eat them on a train.'" So random, but it just got me.

This episode is definitely one of my favorites. Ross and his little interjections just make the episode for me. "Oh, is this crystal?" Judy's reaction when Monica tells her that she IS the twinkie in the city.

The whole beginning of the Richard Burke storyline was great. "I love Dr. Burke. He's just like a brother to...dad."

I love how good Monica is at foosball, and I loved when they remembered that in a later episode: Dinner is ready and Richard doesn't want to leave till he wins so she walks up and quickly scores. Makes me chuckle each time.

I just started watching Friends re-runs on a daily basis several months ago - I was a Friends virgin before then, and HOW COULD I HAVE MISSED THIS INSANELY FUNNY SHOW???

I have dozens of favorite moments, most of which have already been mentioned here, but recently saw one very tiny moment that had me almost falling off the recliner.

Rachel is explaining to one of the other girls - Monica, I think - why she's planning to move out of Joey's apartment now that she's going to have a baby.  She has several very practical reasons - there's not enough room, the baby will fuss and cry and disturb Joey (especially when he has a date over), etc, etc.  And then she pauses, and says that if she stays, she's also afraid that the first thing the baby will learn to say is "how you DOIN'?"

The way JA delivers that line, with a high-pitched baby voice and an absolutely straight face, is a moment of sheer comedy genius.

Though it's silly, one moment that has always stood out to me was in the episode where Chandler is trying to prove to himself that he's not dead inside and can feel emotions. He's sitting on the couch, reading a book, and when Monica walks in, he's embarrassed and tries to toss the book under the couch, but instead it slides right to Monica and she finds out he's reading Chicken Soup for the Soul. I laughed about this for the longest time when I first saw it.

A number of people have mentioned "The One Where Everybody Finds Out", but my favorite moment is actually a very small one that comes at the end of this exchange:

Chandler: I can't have sex with you.

Phoebe: And why not?

Chandler: Because I'm in love with Monica!

Phoebe: You're...you're what...

Something about the way Lisa Kudrow delivers that last line gets me every time, how quickly Phoebe shifts from being amused to being shocked, and how she immediately takes seriously this declaration of love from one of her best friends about another, even amidst all the shenanigans.  I just love it.

First of all, I'm SO happy I found this thread! What a great way to spend a slow afternoon at work!

One of my very favorite moments ever was in the first season. In TOW The Evil Orthodontist, Rachel & Mindy go to Barry's office to confront him about the lying & cheating, and this exchange occurs:

Barry, to Mindy: I was thinking of you the whole time!

Rachel: Please, that second time you couldn't even have picked her out of a lineup.

Mindy: You had sex with him twice?

Rachel: Well, the first time didn't count. It's Barry...

The look on JA's face was just perfect!

Also, TOW Chandler Crosses the Line, Joey says:

Joey: You're so far past the line, you can't even see the line. The line is a dot to you.

That one rocked as well.

There are so many, but I hadn't seen those 2 mentioned.

Joey's expression in this exchange will not ever fail to make me laugh and laugh:

P: "They don't know we know they know we know!"
R: "Joey, you can't tell!"
J: ... "Couldn't if I wanted to!"

I usually stick with seasons 2-5. Anything else is like panning for gold: takes a long time to get the good bits.

The "game show" Ross puts together to see whether Rachel and Monica know Joey and Chandler better than the guys know them is pretty darned classic.

Ross: Every week the TV Guide comes to Chandler and Joey's apartment. What name appears on the address label?

Rachel: Oh! Chandler gets it. It's Chandler Bing.

Monica: No.

Ross: I'm afraid the TV Guide comes to "Chanandler Bong".

Monica: I knew that. Rachel, use your head.

Chandler: Actually, it's Miss Chanandler Bong.

The only thing that bothered me about that episode-and it's one of my favorites-is that when Ross declared a tie, there were still questions on the board. If there would have been a throwaway line like "time's up, we have a tie!" it would have explained why they didn't use all the questions.

Every single time I hear "We Will Rock You" I start singing "we will we will...call you back."

And if someone says anything at all about soup I say "mmm, noodle soup."

In reading this thread I read all the lines as they were said on the show and it makes me laugh.

I loved that whole episode.

My favorite is "What is Chandler Bings job?"  ANd they just stare at Ross, they have no idea, then Rachel says he is a Transponder.

Plus there is Monica's  "I am SO GOOD at LIGHTNING ROUNDS!"

My other favorite episode though is when Joey moves back in with Chandler.  Especially the ending.

A number of people have mentioned "The One Where Everybody Finds Out", but my favorite moment is actually a very small one that comes at the end of this exchange:

My favorite is the scene between Phoebe and Chandler acting like they are about to seduce one another.  So hilariously awkward, waiting for the other person to stop.   I know this is the end of the scene, but everything leading up to it is hilarious.

I love Chandler's line in TOW all the poker(?). Rachel comes in and says "guess what?" Chandler replies, "The fifth dentist caved and now they're all recommending Trident?" So Chandler and it gets me every time even though I know it's coming.

I also like the scene when Joey finds the naked picture of Monica in the magazine that Chandler had left and Rachel catches him. I love her explanation of what it is that he does. "Joey has a secret peephole!" "Yes! He has a naked picture of Monica! He takes naked pictures of us! And then he eats chicken and looks at them!" I loved JA's delivery.

Monica's line cracks me up every time, "I'm Monica. I'm disgusting. I stalk guys and keep their underpants." I love everything about this setup. I love how Joey flipped it on Monica and Chandler who were being really unfair to him. Everyone's reactions to Monica's announcement sealed the deal.

Another small line that just tickles me pick is the one where Phoebe has the sexy singing voice because of her cold. At one point she says, "Hey Gunther, be a good little boy and bring me a whiskey." I loved early seasons Phoebe.

Whereas for me, this was the kind of S1 line that made me think the writers were trying too hard to be clever, and just missing the mark.

Phoebe is my least favorite character but some of my favorite lines involve her. One is in The Mugging episode when Ross says "I knew you're be my death Phoebe Buffay!" and the other is when Joey is making up excuses for not being on the parade float for Days of Our Lives and Phoebe says "Nothing with Raccoons!".

More of my favorite moments are any time Chandler and Joey are sitting in their barca loungers. I love them watching Bay Watch, when they were watching a Kung Fu movie and doing the moves right along, and when they had Free Porn! Their friendship felt natural and great (when Chandler wasn't putting Joey down).

The entire Emily/London storyline

Couldn't stand the guy who played Joshua but loved Rachal being so awkward and trying so hard with him.

I hated how unprofessional Rachel was with her assistant Tag and when she told the woman from another dept she was going to report her to the boss, just because she asked about Tag. The show wanted us to think Rachel was good at her job, but she seemed to spend most of her time sexually harassing her assistant.

Last night the episode aired with Phoebe's weird artwork named Gladys (the super creepy picture with the woman coming out of the frame). I forgot how funny it was, the whole "fight" between Rachel and Monica over who would get it, then Joey buying it from Monica only for Rachel to tell him the picture is haunted (with Gladys dragging her half body around at night looking for legs to steal).  Then Phoebe makes a new picture that is even creepier (forgot the name) so that they don't have to fight over Gladys anymore.  The ending with Rachel scratching at Joey's door in the middle of the night, then scaring the crap out of him with the picture is priceless.
