S10.E02: Jessa Says Yes to the Dress

Recommended Posts

If Josie seized for 15 minutes and there was no cause such as high fever, she is almost certainly on medication. Such uncontrolled seizures would be very dangerous for a developing brain.

I didn't care for Jessa in the mermaid gowns either. I think you need to have a certain body shape to pull off a dress like that and she looked so much better in the blush dress that she chose. Not criticizing the style itself because I see some brides who look lovely in a dress like that. My one niece who married last year looked absolutely

stunning. Sleeveless also seems to be the style these days, but it wouldn't have worked for me , glad it wasn't around back in 1990.

I thought it looked like Derick was pulling a chew out & tossing it.  Mr Lucy chews (I know Yuck!) so the action looked familiar to me.  Besides who normally takes gum out of their mouth with their fingers & throws it?  Don't most guys spit gum?

After I posted I realized Michelle's not the kind of mother that would bother with giving her kids medication. That's Jana's job! Maybe they were tranquilizers so Michelle wouldn't freak when all eyes were on Jessa at the shop.

One thing that was cute was Grandma Duggar speaking up and saying that Jessa would look beautiful in a burlap sack (or something to that effect) and Jessa just smiled and said, "Thanks, Grandma."  It was such a Grandma thing to say.

I wonder what Grandma Duggar thinks of her daughter-in-law. I mean, TRULY thinks.

Just rewatching for the pills and, yep they are there. My neighbor's son had seizure disorder and took little white pills.  He also required speech therapy, used his hands in awkward ways similar to Josie (when she waves it always seems backwards) and was clumsy.  With lots of therapies, he is fine today and works as a carpenter!  Why don't they give her what she needs. Oh just saw poor James having below-level math tutoring.  This is sad, I would not compare/contrast the Duggar kids to a mainstream kid, but they are still worlds apart from the Bates kids, who live under similar circumstances.

I'm the odd one out in not liking Jessa in the mermaid cut.  I'm not sure why but it didn't seem nearly as flattering to her as the ballgown style.

I didn't like it either. Mermaid is a really difficult cut to pull off especially when you're short. I think the blush dress Jessa ended up with was gorgeous and suited her perfectly.

The screen captures make it appear to be a big wad of gum. However, it's odd that once it's out of his mouth he still looks like he's exhaling smoke. And didn't his mom teach him to dispose of his gum properly? What's with flicking it into the bushes? Yuck.

. I swear I picture Bitchelle laying in bed all day and only coming out of her room on days they tape. Meanwhile the J'slaves with help from grandma run the house and kids. So so sad. If Bitchelle indeed has a mental illness it's too bad they don't make it known and show her going through treatment. I'm sure it would help at least one fundy person who discouraged from seeking traditional therapies such as counseling. Another reason why I think Jana will never leave. She has the burden of bring the oldest and therefore has the perceved obligation of taking care if the family in Bitchelle's absence.

I've always had the same image with one change. I think she spends most of her time in the office doing scheduling and all that entails to run the Duggar empire. Michelle is a full time administrator, not a full time mom.

I'd actually like to think of her as a working parent. But I'm another who thinks she's more checked out and in hiding instead of meaningfully contributing either as a mother or administrator of the family.

OK, show, how stupid do you think we are? Jessa "shopping " for a wedding dress was the biggest wad of wool that's ever been pulled over our eyes.

When she arrived at the shop, her (previously chosen and ordered and altered) dress just happened to be hanging on the "modest" rack. Then she tried on some shop-worn and ill-fitting decoy dresses, with the clips holding them together. Then she comes out with the perfectly fitting and brand-spanking-new blush gown and everyone pronounces it 'the one'. Not an alteration to be made!!! Imagine that.

Egad....and to think JB and Mullet and TLC  made them all haul themselves in there for that nonsense. And, funny,  there were no other customers. Hopefully, the shop didn't have to close for long, since she was really just there to pick up her previously ordered and altered dress.

My countenance was being defrauded by all the fakery.

And also: whoever that kid is that gets teamed up with Josie in the talking heads....so sad that she has to imitate the way Josie speaks and acts to get attention for herself.

Is Jessa probably a 6 in wedding dress sizes? 8? What size/s are normally kept in store? I think 2s always/mostly have to be special ordered. I'm not a wedding dress expert at all. I remember I wore a 4 size dress and average height/ 105lbs. Can't remember if that size had to be ordered. That was 10 yrs ago.

As a pharm tech, this is the least descriptive sentence ever. There are so many pills that are little and white that it's going to be impossible to know what they are just by looking at them in a vial. What doctors use to treat seizures, especially in young kids, is going to depend on the cause and even then there are a bunch of different manufactures that could have different variations (different sizes, different colors) for the same medication.

For as easily as it could have been a chewable lamotrigine (anti-seizure med) for Josie it also could have been lorazepam (anti-anxiety med) for Michelle.

From the screenshot, no, that bottle is definitely not labeled.

Which means it's either an old bottle they're using for OTC meds, or the peel the labels off of prescriptions meds. If it's the latter that's incredibly stupid, but I guess people do it. But it has to be labeled to leave the pharmacy (by law it needs a patient name, doctor name, a rx number, the filling date, the medication name and dose, the dosing instructions, and the name and address of the pharmacy that filled it. and that's at the very least).

I so wanted Jessa to try on a Pnina fairy stripper wedding dress just to make Mama Michelle faint like Aunt Pittypat.

Ha... I did too! And I'm no prude but those Pnina dresses make even ME blush, so it would've been extra funny to see it on the show.

The Pnina's really aren't that racy but the various bride's augmented boobs falling out the top of the corsets are what makes the look racy. If someone like Jessa tried one on it would probably look more fairy princess than porn princess.

I dunno about that. I'm sure it's mostly the extreme ones that were posted but I consider it pretty racy when I can see if the bride-to-be is or isn't wearing a bra, or undies, and in the latter case I've seen pics where I was left wondering if the bride forgot to shave "down there" or if it was just not a good undie color. I would've laughed hysterically seeing Jessa walk out in one of those sheer stripper dresses. Sorry, I know kinda OT since she didn't, but it made me laugh. I did love the dress she chose, though.

I do not think Michelle is the one to blame for James and the other younger siblings visiting or staying with Jill. Jill whined about Derick going to work, and I bet dollar to donuts she wanted someone to be with her while he was gone. She does not know how to handle being a married woman with a working husband. She is too clingy and needy, and Derick was the first young man outside her male family members and family friends to give her the time of day. It is going to be interesting to see how she deals with a baby and Derick working. I would not be surprise if she puts pressure on Derick to quit his job. Baby Dilly will probably replace the loneliness she feels because Derick has other responsibilities besides staying with her 24/7.

Link to comment

I agree. Me'chelle has plenty of J'slaves to help her out at home. I think Jill is especially clingy & immature. It's not like she can turn on a TV or pick up a novel if she's bored either. I think this will stop when baby Dilly comes along (or a Derick probably hopes it does). Just looking at those photos of jill standing inches away from a derick when he was dressed as Pistol Pete (posted on another thread here) I wanted to shout "FtLOG, woman, give him some space!"

I thought Jessa looked great in that dress.

Like, Jill needs to like come up with some more like, vocabulary words, or people will really think she's, like, a teenager.

It greatly annoyed me when the 2 chaperones were discussing the "rules" for courtship & esp.the little one, who seemed to really have the rules drilled into her. Except I *thought* MEchelle said the couple was to decide what rules are right for them? Yeah, right.

The baby mobile greatly confused me. I don't watch the show regularly, & even I remember them getting & opening that as a wedding present. Did they re wrap it & set the package on the doorstep?

I thought the sisters were kind of bitchy about the bridesmaids dresses. I've been a bridesmaid a few times. I've never loved the dresses but went along because it's what the bride wants.

I see a great improvement in Josie. She is able to answer questions & also keep a conversation going back & forth. I wonder if she is getting some therapies. Maybe for HIPPA reasons they couldn't film that. However, MEchelle could discuss it instead of whitewashing it under her "everything's perfect" umbrella.

hee. This reminds me of a certain soup commercial where the woman on the phone is wearing the dress and the soup place says "You don't love the dress?" while the woman responds tentatively "I love my sister." I thought Jessa's bridesmaid dresses were nice but I couldn't get that commercial out of my head when they were being snarky about them. It's a bridesmaid dress... you're not supposed to love it, even if the bride tries to find one you will.

Yep, not to mention the BS where she says she hopes she finds a dress that day because she doesn't have time to order one online? That doesn't even make sense. What, is she getting married tomorrow? She wanted to buy the dress in the store so TLC could film it, because if they film it, they pay for it.

Probably at TTH taking care of the younger kids. Heaven forbid any of the older boys lending a hand, or JB for that matter -- it's girl's work.

I read on Pickles and Hairspray that Binessa booked the church in JUNE 2014.

When did they get engaged?

Link to comment

It seems to be right after the wedding.  Why they held off on the news?  To allow Jill's pregnancy announcement?  To aid TLC's drama in a short time to prepare for the second wedding?  To give space between Jill's wedding and the engagement announcement?

OK, now I'm confused...I know TLC plays with the timeline and "storylines" heavily, but how is it that Benessa booked the church in June, yet was engaged in August? That is "real life" history....how can she book 2 months before the Great Engagement?

On re-watch, those bridesmaid dresses were too big, I don't blame them for not liking them immediately. The one Jana tried on was at least 2 sizes too big, and Jinger could have gone down a size.

I remember when Jessa's wedding pictures came out online and I think it's Ben's youngest sister who is swimming in hers, I think it ended up being tea-length on her or somewhere close to her ankles and everyone else's was closer to just below the knee.

Jessa couldn't give two shites about the dresses, which was completely humorous to me. I actually thought this was one of the better parts of the episode.

Isn't that how Monica and Chandler got engaged on Friends? So worldly, those Duggars.

The bridal shop apparently posted somewhere on social media (a friend of mine saw it, I can't remember whether it was twitter or IG) that the bridal shop reported that Jill was too sick to attend. Interesting that the DUGGARS couldn't come out and explain this. It's not that hard.

Jessa was SUPER skinny before the wedding. I imagine she was about a wedding dress 4. I was an 8 and weighed all of 105 lbs. (110 max, it's been 21 years since I bought the thing). I bet she bought the dress ahead of time, just like she booked the church, and as has been posited here, this "shopping" excursion was all for show.

Lily and Ellie of the Duggar Blog mentioned that there were tears from Michelle. WHAT? She didn't even make a pretense of dabbing away fake tears like she did at Jill's fitting. Who are those people trying to fool? No one cried) (aside from Ben's mom because the scene was FAKEITY FAKE FAKE! I imagine Ben's mother hadn't been a part of the original shopping trip, hence her show of emotion vs. MEchelle's stone face and crazy eyes.

I just read your posts after mine about the church booking vs the Great Engagement....wasn't there some serious speculation that Jessa had already been engaged to thedashingbenseewald way before they publicly announced it? Maybe that's why she booked the church in June, 2014! What do you all think?

A 2/4 wedding dress size or sizes in most stores for jeans/casual dresses? I think she looks like a 2/4 in usual mall sizing and a 6/8 in wedding dresses. I think she weighs about 114-116.

Isn't she around 5'4 or 5'5? 115 is a lower healthy weight for that height. I'm 5'5. At 115, I'm a 4 in mall dresses, 2 in pants. I'm 102 now and a size 0.

Msblossom, were you typically a size 4 in mall sizes then? I think wedding dress sizes usually jump up two sizes? Is that right? My guess is Jessa wore a 6 but I guess she's not going to say.

00-2

0-4

2-6

4-8

Etc?

I know this is nit-picking! I find it interesting.

At any rate, I don't find it surprising that the bridal store carried Jessa's size in-store.

Jessa is about 5'5". She is shorter than Jill, who is about 5'7", but taller than Jana, who is around 5'3". At her thinnest, and she's small-framed to begin with, I don't think she weighed much over 105. My size 8/105 is on a 5' frame. Of course, this was bridal sizing from 20 years ago; I was around a 2-4 in "regular" clothes, probably about a 0 now. I imagine bridal sizing has likewise gone the way of vanity sizing, but just not on the scale we see now in regular clothes.

I doubt she is much over a 0 in "regular" clothes these days. Same goes for Jinger. Joy looks larger only because she's curvy, but at best I bet she's maybe a size 4-6.

Link to comment

I see Jessa wearing a size 0 from American Eagle. I don't see Jessa wearing a 0=24in. from Hudson or Adriano Goldschmied.

At 105 and 5'5, Jessa's BMI would be 17.5. Meaning, if she dropped even a pound, her weight would be clinically in the anorexic category. My belief that she weighs close to 115 is because that would put her at just healthy weight, which is how she appears to me.

I typically wore sz 4 - 6 in mall sizes, so you're right.

I didn't realize Jessa was 5'5"; she's taller than I thought. I know being on tv makes them look bigger. She looks so petite in her photos.

BMI has pretty much been debunked as garbage. Jessa has a VERY small frame, so she can carry the same weight as I can (five inches shorter), and I am the one who looks underweight because of my larger frame.

Jessa's collarbone was scary visible before her wedding. Scary. You could see the bones in her elbows. Her face was gaunt. She was MUCH thinner than she was in earlier years at the same height. She looked like she needed to gain about 10 lbs. These numbers would put her right about where I said she likely was at the time. Now, it's hard to tell because she's been well-bundled against the weather. But her face looks a little fuller, so she has perhaps gained a few pounds back since the wedding.

At any rate, both she and Jinger have appeared to be scary thin this past year, and Jessa was dieting (per her IG) last spring/summer in anticipation of Jill's wedding and her engagement/wedding. Given Mechelle's admission to an eating disorder that was cured by prayer (okey doke, I do buy that she had some issues relating to weight), and Mechelle dragging Jana to Weight Watchers when she was 16 to lose 10 lbs., I wouldn't be surprised that these girls had body image issues, especially in these years when they are required to attract/marry eligible fundie men.

I think you're right, Jessa does look like she's put on about 7-8 lbs since the wedding. She was looking a little bobble-headish in some of the wedding photos I saw online; could have been nerves though. She looks better now.
