Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. I don't understand.  I can see someone allowing a visitor to block their own driveway, but don't see how that would be "entitled."  Are visitors of neighbors blocking other people's driveways?  If that's the case, I don't see how the neighbor could be in a position to "allow" that.  So I'm confused.

I have some experience with this and I looked it up online and found out that it depends on the state as to who if anyone can legally parallel park across a driveway. Some states don't allow it no matter who it is, others allow it only if the address on the car registration matches the address of the driveway. So friends parking in it would be illegal pretty much everywhere.

My own experience with this was in NYC in my Dad's neighborhood. Whenever I was down there and had to parallel park on the streets around his building I'd find cars parked across driveways, only the driveways were often so narrow that the cars hung over them on both sides over the line that marked the beginning and end of the driveway space, which is also technically a violation. Some of them were obviously doing it spitefully.

One house had a fire hydrant down the street from their space but with their large pickup truck parked in their driveway hanging over the edge of the driveway there wasn't enough room for anything but a tiny car to legally park between that and the fire hydrant. In NYC I believe the law is that you have to leave 10 feet open next to a fire hydrant. So effectively they were screwing the rest of the people looking for a parking space out of another spot. But I believe that they were actually trying to prevent anyone from attempting to fit there and hang over into their driveway, which I've also seen people do.

I've also seen people parking on those streets not even in driveways, but just in regular spaces that hang over a couple of inches into a narrow driveway. If two cars on either side of a narrow driveway do that it can be difficult for anyone pulling out of the driveway to turn onto a narrow street without having to make several maneuvers to avoid hitting either car or the car across the street. I've seen people struggling in that situation!

For city people this stuff is familiar but I'm sure it's hard to visualize if you're not. And yes, it is very inconsiderate.

Sounds like there are a couple crimes against parking - blocking a driveway when parking parallel to the street, and blocking a sidewalk when parking in a driveway, perpendicular to the street. Still not sure which the original complaint was about, but I have no problem agreeing that either or both are a peevable offense.

My neighbor is not parking perpendicular to the street.  He's managing an odd hybrid where the car is more of a 30 to 45 degree angle depending on the day.  He leaves the rear of the car on the street and most of the front angled across the sidewalk.  It appears he thinks it's a lesser crime to block the sidewalk than to overhang an end of the driveway, but no one parks in the space just past the driveway so he's at fault either way and has a perfectly acceptable spot available to him.  Actually I don't think he's put any thought into the matter at all and just does as he pleases.  He's lucky our petty and vindictive neighbors moved or he'd already be getting broken windows.

Omg. So I went to the ballet and was sitting next to this elderly lady. I know her pretty well and I wouldn't say we are friends but we are friendly acquaintances. So the score to the ballet is Philip Glass. During the whole ballet the old lady is dramatically covering her ears, sighing loudly, saying "THIS IS SO AWFUL." At the end of the performance she again dramatically spit "I HATE THIS."

She's always like this. Any music that's not super old fashioned and classical she makes a huge display of covering her ears and crying.

I woke up today around 3am with a bad dream.  I fell back to sleep but I just had this vibe driving to work today it was not going to be a good day.  And it wasn't.   A bunch of little things to stress me out but the most agitating thing was an appeal I faxed in that was 130 pages was not received by an insurance company.  So I'm going to have send this in again.  They better not kick this out for timely filing!

But I just like had this feeling today was not going to be good.  Idk I think sometimes the laws of nature allow you to have good days and bad days as well.  I just felt the bad like a lot today.  Even a friend who sent me an email kind of busting my chops.... usually I would laugh at what he said but today I felt it was kind of a snarky comment.

The neighbor parking blocking the sidewalk was in the on street spot this morning.  Someone must have spoken to him.

It's kind of pathetic that people do these inappropriate things and need a neighbor to let them know it. My mega complaint is about all the folks in our community who park on the streets. When their garage doors are open, one can see they're using garages for storage facilities and/or *workshops*. The winding streets through our development are wide enough for two cars passing each other, but that's a challenge now. Workers' trucks have few parking spots. Whenever I grouse about it people say, "You can't tell people to only park in their garages or driveways". Hosting a party here? Neighbors from around the development actually carpool 🙄.

In my neighborhood, we all have two car garages, but they're detached, at the end of narrow driveways -- the driveway only widens to double after you pass the house.  So between people using their garages for storage (or converting them to guest houses) and not wanting to mess with tandem parking in the driveway (especially in multi-generational households were there are 4 cars/house), there are a lot of cars on the street; I always have at least one parked in front of my house.  Yes, it's a public street, I don't have any more right to the stretch of it in front of my house than anyone else.  Yes, it's anyone's choice to park $30,000 worth of car on the street so they can store $3000 worth of stuff in their garage.  But it's still annoying.  Especially on the rare weeks I need to put all three bins out for collection and there's no room, so I have to block my driveway.  (Even without that, I say common courtesy dictates fill up the street in front of your own damn house first.)

What I've been noticing are people who have turned their garages into, essentially, family rooms.  I mean they are still garages - they haven't actually converted them into an  room - but there is usually a big TV in there with a sofa or two, a fridge and the like.  It's just bizarre to me.  These are people who live in middle to largish houses, with basements.   And yet for reasons which totally elude me they prefer to spend most of their time sitting out in their garage watching TV.  Man shed?  Sorta, I guess.  But they could accomplish the same thing using their basement, even unfinished it would beat a garage I would think.

We don't have basements here, but see the same thing with garages.  I understand in the summer because open the overhead door and instant cooler air in the late afternoon. I have a screened in porch for the same reason.  My car lives in the garage though.

Sounds like my one daughter. As a single 20-something, she bought a cute little four-bedroom house. Crazy, right?  But within a couple of years, she met her husband-to-be, and he & his two shared-custody kids were living there as well. So the garage/laundry room became also the den/exercise room. Then Covid hit, and you can add work from home office to that.

All that’s to say, someone’s house may look big to an outsider, but you can’t tell what kind of spaces a family might need.

I saw quite a few people do that in 2020.  (Basements are not at all common here, so not an option.)  I rarely come across it anymore, so either they're hanging out in there with the garage door closed or they went back to using them as garages.

Peeve:  the Yanks just lost game 1 of the World Series. Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. With a tenth inning walk off grand slam homer by the Dodgers. I’m not even a big fan and wasn’t watching the whole game.  I watched the last half inning since I happened on it and I saw it was still on and the Yanks were ahead. I still root for my home team, but that was quite a play to witness. I also saw Bucky Dent’s famous homer in 1978.

Oh and I just learned the term walk off grand slam homer.
There was also an exciting missed catch by the Yanks that let the tying runs move up.

We got egg nog in our stores in time for Canadian thanksgiving.  Not a fan but my husband did a 50 yard dash to the cooler.  He was a little taken aback to see just how many versions of egg nog are available now.  Combining two 'holidays' in one you will be thrilled to learn you can get pumpkin spice egg nog.

I wouldn't say I loathe it but I certainly don't follow it.  Well for that matter I don't follow any pro sports so that makes me just the life of the party during baseball season, football season, hockey season and if soccer had a season probably that one too.

I'm not a pro sports fan either so I stay quiet or wander off and do something else.  The grandchildren have made for great excuses.  The one time I got truly ticked was one daughter's wedding rehearsal dinner.  The almost in-laws picked a place and made a reservation not for the comfort of the guests.  It was super cramped and almost impossible to get up from the table plus it was buffet style.  The selected place and table set up were based on the proximity to a TV screen so they could all watch some sporting event.  The relatives on that side all jumped up to leave when the game was over not considering our event was not finished.  They even left before the attendants got their gifts.  So rude.

Pumpkin spice is one of my pet peeves, but it doesn't sound so bad in egg nog.  The filling for a pumpkin pie is basically egg nog (eggs and cream) + pumpkin and spices. + something alcoholic!

My favorite grocery store has stacks of pumpkins outside along with other festive holiday items such as pine cones that are coated in some kind of scent that I loathe.  Shopping over the weekend, I kept getting coughing fits and discovered that they had brought them inside.  Guess they contain the cheap cologne ingredient that I'm allergic to.

why is target selling Christmas stuff already? Especially snacks... My wallet can't resist Christmas snacks.

The World Market has the British chocolate box we usually get, up to $36, so that isn’t happening this year, unless we find it cheaper, somewhere else.
I saw it in Meijer, when we checked it out last year, so I’m hoping they still have it at a better price.

It sounds like you might have season tickets.  Is there any way you can talk to the Box Office and see if you can change your seat to a comparable one?  (Bearing in mind that you may end up to someone like my ex, who after about 10 minutes of anything cultural would be snoring loudly.)

I saw Hannukah stuff in a local grocery shop today.  Hannukah starts December 25th this year.  (For anyone who doesn't know, Hannukah is lunar based so the start date varies from year to year.)

Are you talking about Quality Street?  There are a few on-line sources for British chocolates and the prices and delivery standards can vary a lot (eg, crappy packaging, delivery company used), but it might be worth looking into.  Personally, I try to stay away from such sites, otherwise I tend to go a bit overboard.  🤣

Yep. :) I just googled, and Meijer apparently has the large tin for under $18. I love the WM, but they are so expensive with some things.
my parents used a website, in the past.  A few years ago, dad ordered me a lot of chocolate through one.  We also visited a store in Cleveland. That was years ago.
I think there’s a store in Columbus, too.

I'm on the West Coast, so no Meijer here.  Which as regards the Quality Steet is both a good and a bad thing.

Yes I do have season tickets. I'm going to look into asking for a seat change from the usher.

The usher will probably only be able to help for that specific performance, whereas the box office should be able to help for the rest of the season.  If you're persistent, and ultra polite, they may even upgrade you if they say there are no seats available in your ticket range (or just crappy ones).  I would call or go in during business hours.

My peeve for street parking: the neighborhood garage/yard sale. I live on a small narrow side street, no sidewalk, no gutter, there is room for 2 cars to pass each other but if you veer to much you are driving in someone's front lawn. I couple summers ago 3 of the neighbors organized a combined yard sale without notifying the rest of the street. That Saturday morning* I got up to do my weekly errands/shopping run and someone had parked so that I couldn't get out of my driveway. Even if I could there were so many cars on both sides that I would have barely made it through. Once the person who blocked me in left, I set up my sprinkler to "water the grass". Petty? Sure, but no one parked there the rest of the morning.

*By early afternoon the crowds had died down.

The fact that as an adult I’m still having to do the “group Halloween costume” routine at work. Why can I not just pick my own costume? Why do we all have to match or dress in the same theme? I’m almost 40 years old; I don’t want to go digging through picked over shelves for a costume because my team decided on a theme two days before Halloween. I worked at a company a few years ago that also did a team costume. Why are some adults still so obsessed with matching? I participate because I want to have good social cred at work but I don’t enjoy having to buy something I will promptly shove into the back of my closet never to be seen again.

I see this with other things too, like wedding parties with coordinated “getting ready outfits” and groups that go on cruises wearing matching t shirts so everyone knows they are on board for Sally’s 60th birthday party. I mean to each their own, but I don’t get the point of this whole childish “matching outfits” thing when everyone I work with is well into their 30s or 40s. Didn’t you all outgrow this when you were six? Just let us decide whether or not we want to dress up as individuals and move on.

My peeve is on behalf of my daughter: she mailed in her passport renewal on 10/18 and paid for priority delivery. It made it to the distribution center later that day…and hasn’t moved since. The only update (auto generated says my postmaster) is “Moving Through Network. In Transit to Next Facility, Arriving Late”. So no one knows where it is. Daughter doesn’t know if she goes online to renew her passport that way, if things will get screwed up if/when her envelope ever arrives at the center.

I'm sorry about this - I know from personal experience that what should be a simple renewal can turn hellish.  I also know from experience that if your daughter is persistent, she can find phone numbers and real people who should be able to help her.  Does she have a copy of her application?  And of her original passport?  Her original passport number will help a lot.  Good luck!

(For future renewers, I renewed my passport fairly recently and paid the extra for UPS/FedEx because I felt more confident with them and their tracking systems than the USPS.)

Maybe this belongs in good news / bad news but I've had one apartment issue after another the last few days.  The big one began some weeks ago when the unit above me - which was empty at the time - had a serious leak from the sink pipe at 6:30 am, it was so loud I could hear the water over my head in the bedroom.  My super, who is a great guy, promptly went up to fix it and said my new bathroom fan (which had water dripping around it) would be all right.   Fast forward a few weeks and there's a water stain on the bedroom ceiling on the side near the bathroom. He fixes the stain and seals it.  Fast forward another few weeks, the ceiling paint in my bedroom starts falling down all over in large pieces, on the bed, on the floor, etc.  Between my going away and his vacation it probably could have been caught sooner but whatever.  Now his son who also works here has scraped it and is starting to re-plaster but...it's not their fault, he was ill yesterday and had to run the elevator Sunday... but I really feel this will take awhile.  The paint was also old so....maybe it was bound to happen but I'd love for this to be over.

Good news?  I also had my bathroom sink clog up on the weekend.  After a day of aggravation I finally used the hot water/blue Dawn dish detergent trick and after multiple attempts it's draining like a dream.  Home remedies do work sometimes.

Today's peeve - people who think they are better than anyone else because they are either a morning person or a night owl.  Both of these groups seem to think there is something particularly praiseworthy about this and IME don't just tell you about it but put down anyone who doesn't have the same sleeping pattern they do.  I mean, come on, is this really something to gloat about??

As a night owl type I agree @Dimity, though I have actually never met a fellow night owl who braggs about it!  I have known early birds who like to brag.  One of my oldest friends is definitely an early, she likes to get up maybe around 6 am to go to the gym (shudder).   However we have no issue communicating, we just pick a time like noon or 12:30 to meet up fpr lunch.

What prompted my peeve was yet another conversation with my SIL who, apparently, goes to bed at 2 or so every night and rises daisy fresh every morning around 11.  Which would be fine with me if she didn't get mad at me because after a certain time at night anyone phoning me is going to go straight to voicemail.  Apparently this is very middle class of me.  Um, ok!
