Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

I would be careful about fart shaming people.

They might have a medical condition or maybe come from a culture that has food rich with oligosaccharides. They could also be old and not have the control a younger person might have.

I still do not want to smell farts in public enclosed spaces.

Pulling on that story I posted earlier it sounded like that Buffalo Bills fan died as a result of road rage near the stadium not out of an altercation about sports.

But that being said I hate when people say sports outcomes are tragic.  Yes I can agree it can suck if your favorite sports team loses a big game or playoff game.  And it can suck if one player never wins a championship staying loyal to one team his/her whole career.

But I mean still no it's not tragic!

People farting in enclosed spaces. We can hear and smell you!

Sometimes my stomach decides that it's not going to like something and decides to act up.  Not much I can do about it by the time I realize what's going on, and trying to hold everything in is going to make everything worse.  Sorry!

I have a niece who has colitis. She takes a product that diminishes the odor. It's called Devrom--Internal Deodorant, and she orders it from Amazon. Here's a tip for smelly rooms, (elevators!!), etc: carry a small nasal spray container (the type you press down to squirt) that you first empty out & then refill with Fresh Wave Original Scent. I've been grateful for this, especially when entering airplane bathrooms 😁.

My brand new furnace, installed in October, decided to stop working overnight during our first serious cold front. I suspect a frozen drain line, but I'm so irritated and cold. I paid big bucks and it couldn't handle the first hard freeze. T minus 4 hours until my service appointment.

I had that happen last Christmas and I wound up having to call a rival furnace installer to get it fixed. Thankfully, once the dust cleared, the original company seemed rather mortified that service wasn't restored for  my 90-something mother sooner -especially since my emergency pleas [due to my 90-something mother in residence] got sent to voice mail that the one service person working didn't seem to respond to until several days later!

Six hours and two crews later, it's fixed and my house is heating back up again. I switched to a more efficient furnace in October and the crew apparently either didn't realize or overlooked the fact that the new system needed a bigger drain pipe. So the old pipe froze, clogged, and tripped a sensor that took the furnace offline around 2am. No charge to me, but this was totally avoidable. I'm off to take a hot shower and see if I have any leftover valium from my last surgery, lol.

LOL, my sister started sending me pics of her nephew's (on her husband's side) new baby 3 years ago. After the first 3 or 4 months I said "Gee, she's cute and all but I don't know her and likely will never meet her so you can save the pics for those that do." She understood. She's not even that close with the nephew and his wife but I think she likes the attention of telling people she's a great-aunt. Kinda weird but that's her.

My sister's talked about this issue with some of her friends, too - and my sister has a baby herself!

But yeah, she's more reserved about sharing photos of her kid online than her friends are with their children - she's talked before about how she feels a bit weird constantly putting her baby's face all over social media and whatnot. My mom's the same way - if she ever does want to send a photo to a friend online or whatnot, she always checks with my sister first (my sister wouldn't care, 'cause she knows my mom would be responsible and careful about that kind of stuff, but still, she just likes to check in anyway).

When our spectacular grandson was born and my stepdaughter was posting the cutest pictures of him--she then realized that most folks wouldn't be gaga over all the photos (what? 😯). So she set up a private Facebook group. It consisted of her mom, her dad & me.  We two grandmas were gaga over them. He's been growing up more than halfway across the country, but thanks to this sweet private Facebook group, I've been able to enjoy wonderful "visits" in between our actual get togethers.  I'm not a big fan of Facebook, but I'm keeping a tight hold on it so I can enjoy family photos *without* all the extra crap it tries to unload on you.

I’m on Facebook should someone from the old days look for me, but don’t really engage.  I saw an ad fir slippers, so ordered them.  Who knew they are coming from another country and will take like three weeks to get here.  Apparently, they slipped those ads in.  Never again.  And, my one daughter won’t allow me to send out pictures of the three grandkids.  I’m forbidden.   Plus, there’s so many things on Facebook I don’t understand.  Between my phone, I pad and Facebook, something always needs attention, so I have to set up an appointment to ask my kids.

One of my cousins isn't allowed to post any photos of her grandchildren on Facebook, even in a small, private, cousins group we set up. I have very few "friends" on FB, *on purpose* (so I don't get inundated with millions of photos 😁). And they're almost all relatives. I'm stunned when I see that some folks have 500-800+ "friends".

I really don’t like it.  All I see is people showing the good times.  They never show the bad times, lol.  Funny.

I forbid my mom from posting photos of me on her Facebook I'm without my permission. I also know she's proud of me and we've come to an agreement I'll approve a photo of us for her to post on Mother's Day and her birthday.

When I was a kid I used to get so mad when I overheard her talking about me. She had no boundaries and didn't respect my life is not for her to discuss with others. I have told her she can share good things like my move and that I got a new job at a high level. But nothing in detail. None of her friends business!

I'm not on Facebook but I can certainly understand why parents don't want pictures of their kids on it.

I’m sure the update fixed things behind the scenes, but pages are still constantly reloading and crashing. Also, clicking on threads still just loads the page to some random spot instead of to the first unread post.

Also-I miss The Royals forums. There’s been a lot happening, especially today…(and King Hot Fred)

Are there any new products that one can toss on the front path if it gets icy? No salt, no dirt/sand. Something that's environmentally safe.

My friends in the northeast swear by something called Ice Melt. Apparently you can get a version that is safe for pets and animals to walk on.

That's what I have.

I had to pour hot water on my windshield this morning because my scraper couldn't penetrate the ice.

Automotive experts and the AAA advise against that because it can cause a windshield to shatter from the sudden temperature changes.  My husband used to manage an auto repair shop years ago and saw people coming in that had this happen all the time in the Winter.  He still recounts the stories of the shattered windshields he saw.  Some people say it's OK use cool or barely warm water instead or to drag a plastic bag with warm water across the windshield gently, but others say don't even risk that.  Sometimes you might get away with it but others you won't.  It depends on a number of factors about inside/outside temperature.

The car had been running with the defroster on full blast for 10 minutes so the window wasn't itself frozen through.

If it's very cold outside and there's ice still on the outside of the window there can still be a big difference in the temperature between the outside and the inside even if the defroster has been running and pouring hot water on it can still make it crack.  It's on many auto glass websites that it's not worth the risk.

That was the traditional way I grew up with of defrosting the windscreen. Fill the kettle with lukewarm water, bring it out and pour it on the windows. But we never had New England level cold temps there!

I have a vitamin subscription that is supposed to be monthly, but their timeline has always felt screwy. I just yesterday finished one bottle and I have another in the cabinet that I will open tonight. Yet, I got an email today that my next one is on the way (I usually get the "we're getting your order ready" email only about 2 weeks into my current bottle). I don't often forget to take them, and I have talked to CS, thinking it needed to be adjusted, but they say it's normal. I guess this is not a big deal, but for whatever reason, it gets on my nerves.

@TattleTeeny that is exactly why I don't set up autoships/subscriptions. My rx meds are the only one, as they are included in my ins and if I go through them, all rx's are $2.  Anything else, I will place an order when I need the item.

ETA: After I posted this, I went out to feed the kitties. I realized I do have one other autoship. Cat food from  Chewy!

Chewy is very good about emailing ahead of the autoship, so I can delay it if necessary. I think I still have a couple autoships set up on Amazon, but so far they’ve also given me enough advance notice that I can delay/cancel. I get the impression that it’s the smaller, more specialized companies that are more aggressive at pushing the autoships.

OK, my locale is still frozen but I had to risk getting out of my hilly side street due to needing to pick up vital prescriptions for myself and my 90-something mother among other errands I could no longer postpone ! Anyway, after I made it back from  the errands (and traversing the nice cleared main roads with ease), I had to return to my abode via other hilly  wet icy side streets and I couldn't believe the number of cars that had gotten stuck in ditches on the sides of said side streets- and even more unbelievable than that were the folks who pulled in front of me as I was very cautiously inching my way downhill trying my best to keep my own car from spinning out of control and/or racing down the hilly  last street before I could turn onto my own street. Yes, even though the temps have yet to reach the technical melting point, the bright sun has melted enough of a layer of water on top  of the ice, folks thought it was smart to back INTO traffic while cars were trying to carefully inch past them! Thankfully, none of them hit me and I was able to use gravity to inch my way to safely turn onto my side street then carefully back IN to my own downhill driveway to the carport!

I know there's no humans I can complain about the dangerous driving conditions but I wish others would realize that even un-icy wet streets aren't safe to speed on much less back into - especially if there are any other drivers around!

And when all of that sun melted snow freezes again, the ice will be back.

What kind of wood is being burned in fireplaces today that makes a neighborhood smell like a hot dog stand? It's disgusting. We've lived here for 23 years and it's never smelled like this before 😡.

Once when I was kid we had a big power outage and we roasted hot dogs on sticks in our fireplace. Are you having a power outage?

Despite the cold and windy weather, snow was still soft and powdery when I dug it out and cleaned my car. Yet ice formed in some places. Weird.

And contrary to the “only 1 inch” predictions, my area got another 3-4! Wish it had been more, but at least we finally had two decent storms. So far. I’m expecting hoping February will bring MORE!😁

I had stopped visiting or participating there some time ago because of  aggressive and weird mean-girling (including an unhinged PM from someone I didn't know from Adam). Wasn't surprised it was shut down. Reddit has a royals sub forum but I'm not sure how busy it is. I just like the fashion and click through the photos without reading the comments.

I have a dentist appointment today.  I'm not in that area often (I didn't change dentists after I changed jobs a few years ago), so I thought "Great, I'll stop at that Indian restaurant next door for takeout (to eat after the minty taste is gone)."    They're closed on Tuesdays.  What kind of restaurant closes on Tuesdays

There's a Chinese restaurant near my friend's house that does.  We were hanging out over the winter break, decided to order from there for the first time in years, and discovered that was the one day of the week they were closed.

Closing on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday isn't common here, but I've run into it with several restaurants, especially Chinese.  We figured it's based on their slowest day of the week, so the best choice to close down (if they don't have enough staff to keep it running seven days a week).

Someone probably took that wonderful scarf.

One of my biggest pet peeves with myself is how many things like that I misplace or outright lose.  It's one reason I often have several of my favorite things I tend to lose, like sunglasses, cheap earrings, hand sanitizers, gloves, face masks, eye drops, scarves, etc., etc., etc.  I have a favorite pair of sunglasses so when it went on clearance for $5.00 I bought like 6 of them.  After several months 3 of them went missing and I couldn't figure out where they'd gone.  I had already ruled out the car and the house.  Then one day I had an idea when I was shopping in my favorite supermarket that I visit a few times a week.  I went to their service desk and asked if anyone had turned in a pair of sunglasses, and held up one of the pairs I still had.  The woman at the desk took out a big box and was amazed that there were two of them in there, LOL.  She said, "They've been in there for a long time, too!"  So now I'm going to go to some of the other stores I frequent on a regular basis and do the same thing.  Maybe I'll find the rest of the stuff I can't find, LOL.

Whyyyyyy are Get Well cards sitting next to Sympathy cards?  Wouldn't you think they'd place some pretty note cards in between? This has been bugging me for several years...ever since I first noticed the peculiar closeness of the two (hopefully very different) themes.

We support National Wildlife, and the Wilderness Fdn and get pretty cards and address labels. I also use the Jackie Lawson email cards (I usually select the ones with classical music playing). Yes...standing in the stores trying to find cards no longer appeals to me (and my back!)

Not only are cards getting too expensive anymore but they're not as good as they used to be.  For over a decade now I have kept a collection of cards I bought over the years just because I liked them and now they're coming in handy because I can't find good cards like that anymore.  Going through them is a reminder that it's not just my imagination.  The funny cards were funnier and the heartfelt ones were better written and more appropriate to the occasion.
