Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

UGGGGHHHHHH, small hairline fracture in the second metatarsal! I have to wrap it up and wear one of those annoying boot things until god knows when. It's not terribly painful, but I hate having to walk so slowly (and not go for stress-relieving walks).

Oh no! I had that three years ago and I was in so much pain for six months. Good luck. You'll need it.

My pet peeve today is the people who "sing" talk. Like not sing, but you know the people who will "sing" the very end of sentences? Like "Hel-loh-oh-oh-ooooohhhhh" with the voice getting higher and higher pitched? They almost always think it's adorable to do that, and I'm always irritated by it.

I’m hoping to be some miraculous fast healer. I’m wondering how I’m going to keep up with my same level of steps/calorie burn/metabolism/whatever in the meantime. I’m not super-dedicated or regimented, but I like making sure I move around a lot, especially after working from home since March 2020.

Also, once this heals, how do I make sure it doesn’t happen again? The doctor said it could have happened just because of walking a lot (I try to get 25 miles a week). I hadn’t been doing any kind of super-intense workouts or even hikes—just walks! Do I buy higher-end sneakers?

Co-sign with SuprSuperElevated. But you can never go wrong with properly fitted, high quality sneakers. Even if you don't run, a running store will be able to help you find the best shoe for your foot. They're pricey but worth it and once you know what is best for your foot you can look for sales and discounts.

You guys, I keep having to remind myself to not be so super-salty and snarky today, haha! I know that in the grand scheme of health/injury, this is not a big deal. It's just a general and admittedly immature "everything can just suck it!" vibe. And I'm at home alone, working, so it's not like I will hurt anyone's feelings (and I don't want to, really), but I just keep thinking sarcastic, snippy things (about emails or IMs or the work itself or a commercial I hear or just anything). It's making me laugh, but probably ultimately not very productive!

UGH. This is why I hate not having a washer/dryer unit IN my apartment (like I did in the previous place I lived)-After unloading my towels (thank goodness it was the towels and not my clothes), I noticed black streaks scattered all over them.🤬🤬

And NOW I know why-the previous tenant, most likely had the BLACK GEL pen  (the G-2 Pilot-I recognized the barrel of the pen) mixed in, because the top of it fell out, and when I cleaned out the lint, the spring that connect the pen was in there!

GAH! I don't even know if rewashing them all again will remove the streaks.

I guess I should be grateful the pen wasn't mixed in with my clothes!

I can't speak to a gel pen, but I have pretty good success removing ink with hairspray.  Spray it moderately on the stain(s) prior to the wash cycle.  Worth a try.

I've been feeling the same way, and also just extremely depressed. 2022 has been a lot worse for me than 2020, and I didn't fare well for much of that year. After today, I'm just done. I hate where I live, but we're stuck here. I clicked onto someone's stream, a few weeks ago - a young woman who used to live not far from me, and she now keeps her location a secret, because she had stalkers who found her home. I tuned in, just in time to hear her happily say, "I'm going to get out of here!" and I've been trying to lose the resentment I still feel, about being moved here when I was younger than she is. I clicked right out of her stream, and cried. I'm happy for her, that isn't what was wrong. I just need something really good to happen.

Try sucking on sour candy. A coworker had a blocked gland after radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer and it's apparently a common side effect. Her doctor told her to suck on lemon drops to help unblock it.

I’ve tried chewing sugar free gum, my dentist said that would help too. But if it was caused by getting poked by a chicken bone (as I suspect) I’m probably going to need the medical experts to intervene. We’ll keep calling the surgeon to see if there’s a sudden opening.

I'm going to post my comment in the Health section.

Well it's happened again,  Three weeks ago we had someone in to give us a quote on replacing our front door.  He came promptly enough when we reached out requesting the quote.  Now three weeks have gone by and we still haven't gotten anything back from this company.

I really don't get it.  I know it's hard to get workers, material etc.  but why do people even bother to take up your time in the first place if they aren't going to follow up to try and get your business?  This has happened time and again over the last 3 years.  And yes I know a lot of it is pandemic related and so on but it's also just plain rude!

It's totally frustrating getting someone to do smaller jobs.  I had someone, and then he "fired" me!  Fortunately, I found someone else.  My neighbor.  I asked her if she had any recommendations, and I did not realize she was able to supply workers, because she used to run a larger building company.  They still work on some rental properties for her.  Do you know anyone like that from whom you can seek a recommendation?  I feel very lucky I found this route.

The Nextdoor for my area has more warnings to people about local handymen then recommendations for people to do smaller jobs. Then other handymen take the chance to promote their services in the threads for those warnings.

My peeve is how the people who come on there to defend the handymen getting called out are so rude and demeaning to whoever has posted about having issues with who they hired. Then if others post and say they experienced the same thing the called out handyman that group of people go after them too implying it's the customer's fault somehow because there's no way the things being posted about the poor quality or no completion of work could be true.

My husband and I have given up on contractors because of this.  It is just ridiculous.  I can't even get the plow guy to send me a renewal contract to sign for the upcoming season.  I call, text, leave messages, nothing.  Last year after a big storm that knocked our power out for a few days we had a salesperson over the house for one of those whole house generators.  It was a reputable company through Costco for Generac, so it wasn't some fly-by-night contractor.  And the saleswoman spent like an hour with us.  We called, texted, emailed, you name it, and no one ever got back to us.  We finally gave up and bought one of those roll around gas operated generators just for the fridge and the water pump (we're on well water so if our power goes out so does our water).  In the time since then we decided we didn't need the extra expense of the whole house generator anyway and were actually happy we didn't buy it.

But it's not just that.  We have other work we need done and every time it's the same runaround.  I had to beg a tree guy to come over and remove a downed tree on our lawn.  And he was recommended by our next door neighbor too!  When he was here we showed him a couple of other trees that we wanted removed and he promised to come back early the next week but never showed and completely ghosted us.  We totally give up.  The work is piling up to do but if it's this difficult, forget it!

Nextdoor seems like it's mostly some sort of digital hellscape.  I guess that's the way with 'social' media.  It's as good as the moderation, which in some cases, is non-existent.

Doctors are jerks. I called 8 hours ago and left a message (and sent an email, per request) with a couple of questions about my stupid foot/prescription and haven't heard back.

Do your doctors work week-ends?  Our family doctor here sure doesn't!  And I hate trying to leave messages on his voice mail - you have to listen to something like a 5 minutes message first and there's no way to bypass.  I guess he wants to discourage us from leaving them!

Yes—first thing I checked online before bothering with anything else. Then I called the open office this morning at 9:30/10, left a message with a call-taker, and per call-taker, also sent a direct email (ie, not the general info email address on the website) with my questions in it. About 15 minutes later, I received a reply from call-taker that the email was forwarded to doctor. Maybe my own fault for saying it was not urgent, just a couple questions.

ETA: I take it all back! She called me now, at 7:30 pm and gave me helpful answers! Whoooooo!

I don't know a single doctor or doctor's office who works weekends, unless they are on call or work in an urgent care office. And if it's not an emergency, they aren't calling you back until Monday, when their office opens again.

My son's pediatrician's office also operates as a walk-in, so yes, there are doctors there on weekends.  Of course, that's something different all together.

Turns out, I can get a special insert that keeps the sole of a shoe very rigid, so I will do that and then I can ditch this bootie thing (when I have to leave the house) and wear a pair of matching real shoes -- or, I'm thinking some kind of easy on/off "slipper boot" kind of deal (which I have to buy as well). Right now, as far as my unhurt foot goes, the only thing I have with a sole as flat as the bootie is a flip-flop, which is not ideal for November and (hopefully not also) December in NJ. So at least now my toes will be enclosed and I'll have the soles of the same thickness under both feet.

Just got back from Mass and experienced a first…someone carrying on a phone conversation without leaving their pew. Several rows of people could hear this woman (like people were turning around to wonder where it was coming from) and it was super awkward. Never mind that the priest is trying to lead a prayer in the opening. When she hung up the people behind me were like, “well that’s a first.”  God knows (no pun intended) I’m not perfect with my phone use but I can at least turn it off in church. It’s not a hockey game, people.

If I ever experience that in church, I'll be telling any jerk on a phone to say "goodbye" or leave. How disrespectful to the priest and the congregation.

Ironically it was during the penitential act, which, for any non-Catholic here, is the part of Mass where the priest says a prayer and you’re supposed to reflect on your sins. I guess someone better say they’re sorry for taking a phone call in the pew!

I went to Catholic school and this dame was lucky Sister Lorraine didn't happen to be at that Mass.  She could hit someone in the back row with a piece of chalk, I swear without even turning around.  This lady would have been felled with a prayer missal if nothing else was handy!

Included in today's Sunday 'Parade' (November13,2022) magazine insert is the announcement that it will ONLY be online from this point on despite having been published since 1941!

It wasn't high brow reading but it was something to look forward to reading besides the funnies and Dear Abby after having to get through the depressing news stories and obits of the Sunday paper. BOO!!

Can't they leave us ANY regularly printed media features?

The way things are going, I may have to start chewing bubble gum JUST so I will have a reason to buy Bazooka Bubble Gum so I can physically read the wrappers for the jokes!

I have no compunction in shushing people at the cinema.  The idea that someone would do this in a place of worship is beyond unacceptable and would certainly warrant more than a shush.

Seconding this. For me it's my sister's habit of doing dishes, prepping dinner, loading the washer, whatever she is doing at the time that makes a shit-ton of noise while she's talking. It is so distracting! There have been times where I've said "why don't you call me back when you're finished" and she gets offended.

I had a friend who, whenever she'd finished preparing a meal would sit down with her plate and pick up the phone. "Hello?" "*chomp* slurp* *crunch*"  "Oh, it's you."  I finally told her, if I picked up my phone and she was eating, I was just going to hang up.

If someone hasn't recommended this already: Go with Uggs - the short bootie. They can be expensive if you buy them new at retail so if you are on a strict budget, go to eBay!

I am a lector at my Catholic parish and one of the first announcements we make at the start of Mass is to ask everyone to turn off their cell phones (immediately! right now!) so as "not to disturb your brothers and sisters in prayer".  Pet peeve: (Bless their hearts, its not always their fault) senior citizens that have no idea how to turn off their cell phones or whose hearing aids are not working properly so they don't hear the announcement and then mid-way through Mass, the inevitable ringing starts somewhere....

This is giving me horrible flashbacks to my mother- and sister-in-law who would do this and, worse, talk while mid chew.  Having been brought up in a culture with a strong emphasis on table manners, shared mealtimes were a nightmare for me.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but Uggs are really not good for your feet (or your back), especially if you already have problems.

Years ago, I had to take my daughter to a podiatrist and the first thing she said was, basically, ditch the Uggs.

This is worth a read, especially if you want to learn about "crumpet feet"!
