Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

I feel your pain.  Ivory is my go-to for soap and dishwashing liquid (because I don't have a dishwasher).  My primary grocery store doesn't even carry either anymore, nor does Target.

Now that you mention it I've had a harder time finding the dishwashing liquid as well.  I put it down to shopping in a small town store with a somewhat limited range but I know I used to be able to get it so maybe it's just not available here anymore.  That sucks.

Hey, that's an idea for you - maybe you can find the older formula online and order it? You'd have to see the ingredient list to make sure you're getting the older formula or ask for it from the seller.

I might try that but for now I am happy with the Aveeno soap specially made for people with eczema.  Well I say happy - happy with the product but definitely not happy about the price!  Another reason I loved my Ivory soap.  Sigh.

@Dimity and others in Canada:  Have you looked into well.ca?  The most basic, traditional Ivory bars are available there.  They're part of Rexall (so you can use your points).  I get almost all of my heavier or larger items there (e.g. laundry detergent).  It takes a few days for it to be delivered though.

When I was pregnant with my kids I would get terrible Charley Horses in the middle of the night. An older lady at work told me I needed to sleep with a bar of ivory soap at the foot of my bed to get rid of them. So, I did and it worked!
That’s really my only experience with ivory soap but if they have changed their formula I wonder if it still works on Charley Horses- lol!

I've heard that before. I'm glad yours got better but I still dont believe that one.

That goes with the doctor telling me to have a banana every day for a week and then every other day during pregnancy.  I had them again after the major surgery last year and they gave me some supplement capsules.

You can get potassium even better from dark green leafy veggies (think: kale, arugula, etc.) Bananas are a good source of potassium but they are also one of the highest fruits in terms of sugar content and don't have any fiber...

Yes, bananas DO have fibre.  3 g, according to Harvard's School of Public Health.  Some reports are lower, but it could be due to ripeness.

I'm so angry right now.  In the grand scheme of things (see all my posts in the Feels thread) it's minor but it's aggravating.  I have been using Ivory soap for years and years.  It's one of the few bar soaps my skin is happy with.  And they've changed it.  They've changed it!

Not only does it not float anymore it looks and smells different.  And not in a good way.  It reminds me now of the cheap store brand soaps my Mother used to buy back in the day. Why, oh deity I am not sure I believe in, why did you allow this to happen?

I feel your pain - there is nothing more aggravating. Write to the company and complain; maybe it will be like New Coke, which was a colossal failure.

I went through a lot of difficulty finding a soap I like; for the past 20 years or so I've used goat's milk soap, which is mild enough for my sensitive skin.

I used to buy Lee jeans, then many years ago they changed the length of their petite jeans. They went from being exactly perfect to about 3/4 of an inch too short. Of course the regular length is about 4 inches too long. I haven't purchased Lee jeans since.

My sister has been helped by the Ivory soap.  One night she woke up with a leg cramp. When she turned on the light, she saw that the bar of Ivory had somehow fallen onto the floor. She put it back--securely between the tucked in sheets. No more leg cramps!

When you weigh less than 100 pounds while pregnant doctors tend to think bananas a better choice than the arugula that I won't eat.  😁 I was already having kale at least a couple times a week so there was that.  Add to that the iron pills didn't even constipate me so no need for fiber.....

One of those where nothing seemed to work for me:

One website I use for blogs is not accessible anymore for the time being.  Another one is down for updates.

Went to the gym today and did not improve upon my time on the treadmill from last week.  I actually had to stop at one point.

My dad seems like really winy today.

I'll never get mad at my mom for cooking meals but she made meatloaf tonight which really I did not like at all.

It's supposed to snow all day tomorrow

If I'm being optimistic:

I think people are just generally due every once in a while to have days where it seems everything works against them.  Better it be on the weekends.

Pushing through it makes a person stronger

I just had a very exasperating experience with Lee petite jeans and was actually thinking about posting here about it. Thanks to gaining 7 pounds, most of it in my midsection, I couldn't fit my favorite Lee jeans and had to go one size up. Kohl's stopped carrying the style I like in petite sizes and I couldn't find them anywhere else except online. I got a great deal on them on Amazon on Black Friday, but I noticed that they came in not only a petite length, but a petite short length and a regular short length. I didn't know which one would fit me so I ordered one in each size in 3 colors. I figured whichever ones didn't fit, I'd return.

Well the problem wasn't only the length but the fit was wildly different between them. Some fit like a bigger size and some were way too tight in the same size. And defying logic, some were too long in the Petite Short length and others were way too short in the Petite Regular length, if you can imagine that! And the regular Short was all over the map too. I couldn't get over it. I know sizing is not standard anymore and it depends on where they're made, but this was just ridiculous. I managed to find two pairs out of nine that fit.

Then returning the rest was a nightmare too because Amazon doesn't show you the exact size in any but one view and you have to search for that view and it's not where you think it's going to be. And with a few of the same jeans in the same color on one order that was an important thing to know. I thought for sure the emails they sent me with the QR return code would show the size but they didn't and I had to search to find it on my order history and other views. It was crazy.

Anyway, with all those lengths maybe if you throw enough spaghetti against the wall you'll find a pair that fits. I told the return clerk at Kohl's, where I brought my Amazon return, that it's no wonder everyone is mostly wearing sweats anymore. 😏

@Yeah No petite short (or so you mean petite regular?) would have a shorter rise than regular short. Plus it would probably have a shorter inseam.  Petite sizes in general have shorter rises because they’re proportioned for shorties like us.  I’m petite all over and have been told that I don’t “look” short in photos.

Yup I'm fully versed in all the ways petite sizes differ from regular sizes. It used to be more consistent but now forget it. It depends on the brand and the cut of the style as to which fit me better. That's why I have to try on petite regular, petite short and regular short. Everything is so inconsistent these days that I have to in order to find something that fits.

Petite short is even shorter than Petite regular length. It's often too short for me. Regular short is supposed to be longer than petite regular, and that's supposed to be longer than petite short but it doesn't always work out that way these days. I was dealing with pants that were inconsistent lengths even in the same size/length combination so I couldn't even count on that.

Like you, I'm one of those that also doesn't look as short as I am in photos. Part of the reason for that is wearing clothing that fits. When you wear things designed for taller people it makes you look smaller. I hated having my mother alter things when I was young before petite sizes existed. They didn't come on the scene until the mid to late '80s if you can believe that. And altering regular sized clothing doesn't take into account the shorter rise of a petite and other proportions like shoulder width and pocket placement, so just taking up a hem or a sleeve often doesn't look right. Everything has to be scaled down for a petite.

My additional challenge now is that clothing is not made for older people. Most older people have bigger midsections so the waists aren't roomy enough. That's why elastic waistbands are associated with older people, LOL. So that makes buying traditionally styled jeans challenging for me. The bigger the waist the more everything else gets bigger, but older people don't need wider and longer legs in addition to a roomier waist. They just need the roomier waist.

My favorite jeans are "jeggings" that have that hidden stretch waistband, but they are not as in vogue as they were for several years now and I want to be able to wear traditional jeans with belt loops so I can wear blouses tucked in with belts like they're doing again now.

When did the use of "I seen" become so widespread? It grinds my last nerve when I see that written out and I've noticed people who are highly educated use it.

Just went on FB and the first post that popped up was a picture of a sad little woman captioned "Me when I opened tiktok and seen that notification".  I feel like re-captioning it "Me when I opened FB and saw someone using seen incorrectly".

I don't really care about what's "in" or "out" anymore.  I live in a cold weather climate, and in the winter, I don't want to have dirty pants.  I basically wear the mom uniform of a long sweatshirt/tunic and leggings between November and April (thank goodness for WFH.  When I need to meet with people online, I'll wear a tunic.  And if I have to meet people in person, I'll wear a skirt or dress :)). I haven't worn jeggings in a long time though.  I have, however, 5 pairs of black leggings, 3 charcoal and 3 navy blue.  :D

Oh that's probably like I would wear if I were a mom. I used to love it when Stacy and Clinton on "What not to Wear" would take a tired, hardworking mom and make her over to look fantastic. I have always liked fashion although now I pretty much stick to stuff that's practical and comfortable. Nothing too "fashionista" for me anymore, but I usually look put together. My mother and all the women in her family were seamstresses and my father's father's family were tailors. So I guess it runs on both sides of my family.

A book related peeve, I just finished a book this morning where the main character returns to her home town to visit her family.  In the opening chapter her father and a younger sister are referenced but we don't 'meet' them.  The author seems to have forgotten she ever mentioned them because we never hear about them again throughout the rest of the book.  Not once.  Even though the main character is staying in the house where Dad and the sister supposedly live.

I am peeved because to me this is just sloppy writing.  Clearly their presence, or I should say lack of presence has no bearing on the plot so why create them as characters in the first place?

Honestly as if I don't have enough trivial things to be unreasonably fixated on!

...or sloppy editing!  I just heard back from my editor for book #2 and she swapped genders of my main characters (twins)!  It's not like she's never "met" these characters before, since she worked with me the first time around.

I hear you -- Why change a classic?  I have used Dove for Sensitive Skin bars for many years (no fragrance, dyes or other irritants).  Suddenly without notice or a label change the soap is different.  Still supposedly "no fragrance"  but  smells different anyway! And a subtly different color -- a bit off-white rather than white.  It's the different smell that bothers me most.   This comes just after the conditioner I use changed its scent without any warning from "crisp and lively" to a musky scent I can't stand -- I had to throw the new bottle away.  Of course these are tiny peeves given what's happening in the wider world, but sometimes our little comforts are a solace when everything else seems dangerously in flux.

I buy a lot of cosmetics from Avon and Oriflame and they regularly stop selling what I like the most, especially hand creams. I hate it.

I've noticed that a lot of products are being discontinued or reformulated more rapidly lately and it's driving me crazy. They keep messing with products trying to find ones that sell better but in my opinion they're only alienating customers.

I didn't know Aveeno made a soap for eczema. Good to know, thanks.

I like the Dove bar soap for sensitive skin. It's fragrance free and very gentle. I use La Roche Posay Toleraine Hydrating Gentle Cleanser on my face.

Not to be a nudge or anything but I found a few "vintage" Ivory soap bars for sale on Ebay Canada. Unfortunately, though, most of them are from the U.S. and the shipping can be high. But some are still reasonable.:
