I just realized what is going to happen in "Jack In the Box" -- what happens when you turn the crank on a Jack in the Box?  OUT pops the clown.  I'll bet money right now, Michael is in charge of Dean by the end of "Jack in the Box".

Suitably creepy reminder for those unfamiliar with the toy:

I think you’re right and the title „Jack in the Box“ refers to the toy, and not to our favorite nephil.

If the storyline is that Jack would have to go into the box instead of Dean, they wouldn‘t give it away that early.

I think being completely literal about it with the assumption that noone would think they`d actually BE that literal about it, is exactly the thing they would do. They would likely think it`s a great word-play since they have a character named Jack and a plot about a box and obviously everyone would think "that can`t be it" but then... surprise, that is it.

Question: Do you have any Supernatural scoop? What’s next for Dean? – Angie
Ausiello: Dean’s Michael problem is far from over, especially now that the hunter needs to come up with a new way of dealing with the archangel. For Dean and Sam, “There’s a level of, ‘OK, if things go really bad, you’ve got the box. We’ve got a Plan B. Let’s search for a Plan A,'” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb previews, before adding that the Winchesters will soon discover that “Plan As are hard to find.” Plus, as Dabb warns, the dastardly “Michael has not been idle during his time in Dean’s head. All of that’s going to come to a head very, very quickly.”

Dean/Michael plot -- still the focus.

Or what about "Jack in the Box" as in, the crappy fast food restaurant?

Sam would love it...

Jensen tweeting from set.  And maybe Daneel is in an ep?

She doesn't seem to be dressed as Anael though. She looks like herself. I think she possibly only visited Jensen with the kids on set because of Vday.

But she has been in Vancouver for like a week so definitely expecting a Sister Jo/Anael appearance.

Me too.

As for Jensen's screentime; the note from Jess (ibelieveinthelittletreetopper tumblr ... does all the spoilers) indicated Dean-lite (not Dean-free) in 14.15. She thought it was due to family time (vice a project).

PLUS we have a filming out of order comment where 16 was filmed before 15. Which means that he might have done his work on 16 and 15 and then got like 6 extra days (presuming he shot like 2 days) for a longer family thing before 17.  He's clearly on 17 and right from the jump.

In short, while all the theories about less screen time MIGHT be true, I think it's far more likely that he simply finagled the schedule for a wee break.  I note that it was about this time a few years back that Jensen called down to LA and asked for a wee break because the storyline was so heavy.  This just may have been proactively planningon his part to always take a breather.  Maybe this is a normal 'low energy' time of year for him in the filming season.  In which case, excellent self care on Jensen's part.  This is the kind of planning that makes a longer run (longer than 15 years) of Supernatural possible.

How did it happen?  Could have been an advanced "give me one Dean-light episode in the late Jan/early Feb filming time" condition of his contract.  Jared may have asked for something similar, something different, or not at all.  Or it could have been a natural byproduct of the storyline (especially with the news that the Michael/Dean mental match is going to pop out soon -- like maybe end of EP14?) and Jensen is savvy enough to parly it into an extended family time.

In sum, I think it's a blip fo 14.15 and that's it.  Time will tell.

I'm actually kind of glad episode 15 is Dean light given the writer.

Given how juvenile her twitter comes across I can't say I'm looking forward to her writing an ep.

The Dabb assisstant? Yeah. Though she is writing with Yockey so who knows if he just re-wrote everything she did. I`d rather Jensen or Dean mostly miss a Berens ep because blergh.

However if episode 15 is the episode that somehow plays in the mind or world created by a psychic? That sounded like it could be a cute story and I thought it had potential for neat parallels with what is going on in Dean`s mind. So I`m disappointed on that level.

Episode 16 appears to mark the return of the bland teenagers from episode 300. Almost no chance they get eaten in those woods. Bummer.

Ep 17, I fear on some level marks the return of Lucifer because spoiler-tumblr has Pellegrino down for it but not as "Nick" but "Lucifer". Maybe it`s a dream or vision or hallucination or something of Nick`s. Best case scenario. I know I won`t get my wish of permanently gone Lucifer but keep him away as long as possible.

This is a good point.

Berens next ep is called Absence.  I wonder that refers to Michael being gone.

At this point I'm honestly not sure which would be less painful. I do really like Pellegrino as an actor. But damn this Nick storyline would be sub-par even for daytime soap opera material!

Oubouris pictures

Shallow note: LOVE Rowena's jacket and necklace

Other than that, everyone gets hurt by snake dude and Dean is in worst shape?  Not sure.  Except snake obviously ties to Oubouris. Rowena COULD be looking for a cure but in the promo an awake Dean is yelling at Rowena for attacking Jack -- usually the promos are from the beginning, not the climax.

Related thoughts: if Michael is messing around in Dean's head, Maybe the snake eating itself imagery is somehow relevant.

I don't usually watch promos or look at the photos, but I did just glance at these and I laughed.  Couldn't they have found a longer bed for Dean?  His legs hang over the end.

I'm guessing they would have to custom make a bed for the boys.  Jensen doesn't fit a twin.  And Jared?  That would be ridiculous.

Fun fact: Harry Potter movies have the bedroom in Griffindoor tower on display at Leavensdown Studios (outside London).  The kids haven't fit these beds since S3 (if ever).  And Daniel Radcliffe is not a tall man.  But they stuck with the beds for some random filming reason (blocking/shot framing).  Could be the same here.

Episode 14x18
Title: Absence

6:32 PM - 22 Feb 2019

Those two suggest both Mary & Rowena are in 14.18, Sam & Dean are hunting together in that episode, and Cas is likely in the Bunker with Sam and Dean.  No word on Jack but Alex is uber-cautious about tweeting.

ETA:  And we know Jensen is King Bacchus at Mardi Gras this year.  His official "duties" are all on Sunday, 3 Mar.  Hopefully they will have worked the schedule such that he can fly back on Monday -- that's pretty common for them.  Usually they work around the boys on Mondays.  He may also me missing from the Fraturday, 1 Mar, if he goes down early for some of Mardi Gras' well-known events.

Not sure it'll impact EITHER 14x18 or 14x19 but the activities do occur around tha time

Hmm. Lots to digest in all that (fandom drama included), but I wonder if anyone knows anything about this guy, John Fitzpatrick? I was already iffy since the episode is written by my least favorite writer -possibly ever - but apart from the often dreadful writing, the editing has been the worst thing about the show over the last couple years, in my opinion. They chop up scenes willy-nilly, especially the emotional ones. Sometimes it's so jarring I wonder if my DVR actually glitched in recording. I hope this guy's directing isn't reflective of this editing 'style'.

From what I can tell, John Fitzpatrick has a long list of independent films that he directed and produced.  I think editing, during that time, was his "day job".  He took over the heavy lifting of editing after Nicole Baer (who was awesome) left.  The best I can offer in terms of his "eye" is one of the 'Shaving People, Punting Things' video.  He's given sole credit for this S11 mid-season "Grinding" video:

Per the Superwiki,  these videos are:

Quote

a series of short videos called "appa-teasers" produced by Phil Sgriccia, Todd Aronauer (until the end of season 10) and the post-production team at Supernatural.

Most of the cast, crew, and producers, however, give the bulk of the credit to the post-production team.  Which means editing has a big hand in the making of.

In terms of official works (which again, is definitely guided alot by the director), here's the list of episodes (from IMDb) John Fitzpatrick has edited:

- Optimism (2018)
- The Scar (2018)
- Beat the Devil (2018)
- Bring 'em Back Alive (2018)
- A Most Holy Man (2018)
- Devil's Bargain (2018)
- Wayward Sisters (2018)
- The Bad Place (2017)
- Tombstone (2017)
- Patience (2017)
- There's Something About Mary (2017)
- The Memory Remains (2017)
- Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell (2017)
- Stuck in the Middle (With You) (2017)
- First Blood (2017)
- Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox (2016)
- The Foundry (2016)

Since I personally found "Stuck in the Middle (With You)" a masterpiece, I'm VERY excited about his turn at director.  Others really disliked that episode but it's a favorit of mine.  Another plug I'll give for the guy is the "Space Cowboy" walk in Tombstone.  Per Misha at Conventions, he had filmed that scene with a weird kind of exaggerated cowboy amble.  I'm pretty sure the Director HAD both realtime (24 frames per sec) and slow motion (48 fps) filming going on -- I'm not remotely sure how it works with digital cameras.  It's possible that they shoot a great deal of Supernatural with both options so they can make decisions in post production.  In any case, that AWESOME slow-mo walk of BadAss was edited by Fitzpatrick and it's only at the very end that you can pickup on Misha's 'amble'.  It was an excellent editing choice.  Maybe it was the director who asked for it, maybe it was the editor who suggested it, but it was well executed IMO in terms of editing --  that's one where I think the editor saved the day.

Apparently this also belongs in Unpopular Opinions, lol, but since it is relevant to a spoilered director.... I think Stuck In The Middle (With You) was a hot friggin' mess, both in terms of direction and editing. I've never been a fan of cheesy slow-mo, and the ummm, homage to Tarantino failed on all counts for me. We'll never know if Dick Speight actually has a directorial voice since he just keeps trying to be someone else. I hope Fitzpatrick didn't take notes from him. I do like the Shaving People, Punting Things videos, so there's some hope.

Pellegrino posted a pic today on Instagram, it looked like maybe the Nick vessel was melting again? He mentioned Lucifer too. Since we are doing our own spoilers now, it might be a safe bet that Lucifer will be back (maybe Nick finds him somehow) in the ep they’re shooting now which is (I think) 18.

Wow.  Intense.   And I’m so glad Dean isn’t sugar coating it for Cas.   He’s telling it like it is and how he sees it.   It sounds awful.

Like most previews, I’m guessing this is early in the episode.  I suspect we are in for a wild ride for the next 7 episodes.

"Are you really fine?" Castiel inquires.

Dean considers the truth for a second and plunges ahead, watching carefully for Cas' reaction, "I don't know Cas."

The two men consider each other for a moment. Dean sees this wasn't the answer Cas was expecting and a rueful smile flashes across Dean's face.  He half shrugs and continues, already knowing where this is going, "But that's what I'm supposed to say, right?"  Deep in the rueful zone but not far from sarcastic. "I'm fine. Keep on moving. That's what we all say."

Cas shakes his head, "No, Dean."

Dean takes this in, nodding, accepting that he's got to play through now. He collects his thoughts for a second, staring into his coffee. Then, decision made, he chuckles to himself because he already knows exactly what will be said, and exactly how this will all play out and because it is Cas and Sam he knows he'll be heard, but not listened to.

"This pounding, in my head," Dean pauses and his expression slides close to anger,"it never stops." His right fingers press into his forehead where the pounding is hardest.

This really isn't what Cas expected, but he begins to realize he should have.

"Michael's in there," relentless, Dean continues, "and he is fighting -hard- to get out." And in the freezer in Dean's head Micheal is screaming in rage, pounding ferociously on the door. "I can't let my guard down.  Not for a second." Dean admits, "I'm barely even sleeping."  He takes a swallow of coffee to hide the smile he can't hold back at Cas' impending reaction.

"Well, that's not sustainable," Cas replies softly, concerned.

Yah think? Dean bites back. "No, no. It's probably not." He quashes the remains of his smile, "But," and he half shrugs again, takes a deep breath and continues with the compulsory words, "no point in complaining about it. It's on me." He looks away, unwilling to meet Cas' gaze because he hates the way giving in to Cas and Sam again has made him feel.

"No," Cas says with conviction, "it's on us, we're here to help you."

Dean collects himself, shaking his head, left eyebrow quirking a bit at being forced into this inescapable conversation once again and plays along, throwing Cas a bone. "I know.  I know that.  And I appreciate that, I do."

He quashes the remains of his smile, "But," and he half shrugs again, takes a deep breath and continues with the compulsory words, "no point in complaining about it.

This is precisely what I see.

Ruth has been filming — I think she’s in 19.

Jim Beaver just headed up to Vancouver today.  That puts him likely in 19 as well.

Correction :  they were still filming 14.18 on Monday so Ruth May still only be in 14.18 versus both that and 19

Math for 14.18, because I could.

So, I went back and looked at EVERY Jason Fischer post for 14.18 shooting to determine how many scenes were we missing of Jensen -- as this seems to be a concern due to his recent appearance in Mardi Gras.

Here's the basis of the assessment
- There were a total of 44 scenes.  10 of these scenes were split into a pt 1 and a pt 2.  On one occaision it seemed like it was filmed 3 times "ex: 35, 35 pt1, 35 pt? ... ? was when he wrote in kanji.  I got the number but the part character was odd).  Note: Jason did NOT put up the scene numbers for Friday the 22nd but we have pictures of all J2M with Misha's kids in the bunker.  I used the missing numbers for those days - which were mostly the final scenes of the episode. Also, if it was on a day Jensen was filming, I presumed they had him in the scene.  This of course, could be wrong -- but since they actually did some rewrite, I imagine they leveraged everything they could.
- Methodology for "Is Jensen Missing":
- Filmed on Fri 1 Mar,  Mon 4 March = definitely "Yes"
- Filmed on Thu 28 Feb: Before noon - "P" - potentially/partially IN the scene, This is based on his arrival time in New Orleans along with the odd sequencing of filming that day.
- Filmed on Thu 28 Feb: post noon - "L" - likely missing
- Filmed Friday 21 Feb - Wed 27 Feb - N, not missing
Complicating factors are:
1) When they split a scene - this could be when they are doing coverage from multiple points of view - so they block it one way - and the camera films from one direction; block it a different way and the camera films from a different direction.  This is often part of how they get 'coverage'.  They film it, focusing on one actor, reset, and film again, focusing on antoher actor.  If Jensen was in one of the two splits, I considered him 'p' or potential/partially IN the scene. 7 of the 10 split shots were 'p'.  Meaning they had part of the scene with Jensen in it and part of it was shot without Jensen.
2) Total scene count at 44. So... either the scenes are less than 1 min or there is a shit ton of editing to do. Typically they are in the low 40's for total scenes.
3) They did reshoots (or completed shooting) for two episodes on the first day of filming.  Specifically 14.14, scene "B30", and 14.16, scenes 44, 15.  This could have been something found in editing or something that they needed to correct in order to make a later episode work properly.

With ALL that info, here's the numbers.  Using 44 scenes:

50% Jensen definitely IN the scene
25% Jensen partially IN the scene
7% Jensen likely NOT in the scene
18% Jensen definitely NOT in the scene

Now, if I recalculate the "partially/possibly" scenes to a most pessimistic view, then I would presume all split scenes where he filmed, are 'partial', and all scenes on Thursday am he missed.

THAT set of numbers looks like this:
50% Jensen definitely IN the scene
16% Jensen partially IN the scene
16% Jensen likely NOT in the scene
16% Jensen definitely NOT in the scene

If I boil it down to split scenes = coverage (i.e. , Jensen is still in the scene, just not there filming when they were covering another character's lines). And all likely missing is definitely missing:
66% Jensen is in the scenes
34% Jensen is NOT in the scene

Feel free to recalculate.  That kanji was a pain.

Opinion:  Not a horrible impact for him going to Mardi Gras. And he's there for the final scenes.
