Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, but I’m glad you’re getting care.

Thank you.  I also found out today that my dad is back in the hospital with appendicitis for the third time this year. They haven't done surgery because he has a really bad heart and are concerned that he won't make it through surgery.  And something about his blood pressure dropping. So they are treating it with antibiotics, again. Tomorrow they will be talking with the doctor again to decide what to do or what can be done, I'm not sure. I'm 18 hours away from him and feel so helpless.

ZOOMAMA,  you're quilt is so beautiful! You did an amazing job! How long did it take you to make?

@Spazamanaz, I'm sorry about the diagnosis but oh my, it does seem that the hysterectomy did turn out to be a good decision. Sending good thoughts your way.

@zoomama, that is quite the quilt. Beautiful, and so much intricate work required! Thanks for sharing the photos with us.

Thank you JEEVES. I have to agree with you on that! Best decision I've made in a long time! Lol

@Scarlett45, that is so sweet!

Okay, peeps. I'm grumpy. Some time in the wee hours of yesterday morning, a #&%^*! jerk broke a window and entered the garden level parking garage of our condo building. Yep. Broke a freaking window. The surveillance video camera caught a good image of him, I'm told. Anyway, he broke a window on one car, I think did some damage to a couple of others, and stole some stuff from a vehicle left unlocked.

And . . . tried to punch out the lock on my car on the driver's door - which I think points to an effort to steal the vehicle vs. just get in and rummage around. Breaking a window would have been faster than punching the lock, but not so good for purposes of stealing the car. He failed to get the lock punched out, but damaged the heck out of it and dinged up the door handle too. OTOH although the keyhole on the outside is smashed to oblivion, the lock system and handle function just fine. I always use the electronic lock system to get into the car; I don't think I've ever used the key to unlock the driver door. I may decide the cost of getting the handle/lock damage fixed isn't worth it, but I haven't gotten an estimate yet. It's an old vehicle and I want to keep it going a few more years while I save up to replace it.

I have decided to investigate some kind of "kill switch" for the vehicle. If it's stolen I will get a small-ish check from insurance and then have to fork out a lot more money to replace the vehicle than the insurance will pay. If I can find a workable way to disable the engine from starting if someone breaks in and tries to steal it when parked, it would be worth a reasonable amount of money. I've been researching DIY kill switches and have just texted the excellent local car electronics company I've dealt with before to see what kind of security equipment they could provide. If the fuel pump relay switch weren't so hard to reach I'd just pull it out when I park the car overnight but it's not. If anyone has experience with this stuff I'd love to hear about it.

I don't live in a sketchy part of town but we're experiencing a lot of car break-ins, thefts and attempted thefts, and catalytic converter thefts. It's just booming all over the place. However, I've lived in this condo complex for 16 years and I've NEVER heard of someone breaking a window into a parking garage here to get at cars. Yikes.

I am so very sorry that happened to you! My car has been broken into a couple of times before I had a garage (city living you know), and its so VIOLATING to have someone go through your things, and the damage it causes, and the HASSLE of having to get it fixed.

UGH! Please let us know what you discover about kill switches etc. I would look into one when I buy my new car.

well, to answer the question of the time involved with my quilt, being a beginner and learning every step of the way, i guess at least 100+ hours easily. i stopped counting hours at 66 and that was before most of the actual sewing it together started. there was so much prep work involved. this started as a big box of like 85ish neckties that my brother sent to me. because they had wool linings and i am allergic to wool, the prep took me so long.  each tie had to be deconstructed manually before a new lining could be ironed in even before i could cut the strips. after about 4 ties, my eyes would start to swell and my hands would be itchy/rashy. so i didnt work daily on this either until it was all prepped and ready to sew. also silk is slippery and moves when you sew it. the learning curve was huge!!!  i sent it out for the actual quilting the 3 layers together -- i doubt i will ever get to that part of the project in my skill level. then doing the hand sewing the binding on, the four sides took several days as i havent hand sewn in years. these old fingers are not in good shape any more! thanks for your kind words.

Well, I'm feeling less worried about my good old minivan. I've been talking with my favorite Honda mechanic. He's a factory trained Honda tech who used to work at dealerships and now has his own shop. I got a quote from him to replace the lock cylinder and door handle, and along with the post installation lock work it's not as expensive as I'd feared. The parts have to be OEM and there's a 2 to 3 week backorder time which is OK with me.

I also asked him about "kill switches" and got some great information. It turns out that my good old minivan has a built in immobilizer system. The key has a chip in it, and if the system doesn't read the chip as present, the engine won't start. IOW somebody could break in and hot-wire the ignition, but if the key isn't present the engine won't start up. That's a relief. I was surprised that such an old vehicle would have the system, but yep, it does. Woohoo!

As with any electronic system, there are ways to foil that immobilizer but: (1) it takes more skilz and equipment than our average opportunistic thieves have; and (2) the thieves with that stuff are going to steal high-dollar vehicles (Benzes and the like), not 14 year old Honda minivans. So my good old bucket of bolts is in a sweet spot - new and well-featured enough to have the immobilizer system and old and devalued enough not to be a target for thieves. **big sigh of relief**

@Scarlett45 - I suppose you'll need to ask about security and immobilizer systems when you shop for your new car. In my conversations here yesterday about our garage break-in, it was mentioned that the newest cars have levels of technological defenses against theft that will deter a lot of wanna-be thieves. Although of course nothing is perfect. I suppose the best we can do is make it harder for a thief to succeed. Interesting article about most frequently stolen cars in Denver which mentions the built in immobilizer tech which is missing from a lot of Kia and Hyundai cars: https://www.westword.com/news/metro-denver-ten-most-stolen-cars-2022-update-15250700

My Honda tech recommended that if I want to add a layer of protection against theft I get a steering wheel lock device; again, it's not invulnerable but does make more work for a thief. I'll look into those if my level of worry ramps up again.

I remember those from when I was a kid, the things that looked like crowbars? The Club?

So many things to consider. But I am looking forward to having fancy tech in my new car (whenever I get it next year). Last week I test drove the new VW ID.4, it was quite nice, I was impressed, but it wasnt as high up as I would prefer, and it was a bit more than I wanted to spend. We shall see. All electric sounds appealing though.

I guess the theft problem with Kias and Hyndais is more widespread.  It was mentioned on the news today that these cars are being targeted by thieves.

It might stem from multiple police agencies across the country announcing that the thefts were occurring, and then proceeding to tell everyone how it's happening.  It's on older models that have a key ignition (push starts are ok), and all it takes is a USB cable.  Some times, reporting the news can back fire 😏.

@Spazamanaz-Wishing you peace & guidance in your journey.  You will be in my thoughts.

This CNN story confirms it's a widespread problem, not only because of the tech deficiencies in many fairly late model Kias and Hyundais, but aggravated by TikTok stunts: https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/22/business/hldi-hyundai-kia-theft. The article includes this:

Quote

The auto theft trend spread widely on social media last year, according to HLDI [Highway Loss Data Institute]. In Wisconsin, where it first became popular, theft claims of Hyundais and Kias spiked to more than 30 times 2019 levels in dollar terms.

Some videos posted on TikTok showed allegedly stolen Hyundai and Kia vehicles being driven recklessly and even crashing. “TikTok does not condone this behavior which violates our policies and will be removed if found on our platform,” a TikTok spokesperson said recently.

The method of theft, which involves serious damage to the ignition system, indicates that these cars are being stolen for fun rather than for resale, according to the HLDI.

A couple who live upstairs from me both drive Kias Hyundais. Each condo has only one space in the garage so one of their cars has to be parked in the outdoor lot here. And so of course, that car has been damaged by a theft attempt. It's a model that has the immobilizer tech, so the stupid thief broke into it and then couldn't get it started. But of course damaged it in the process.

No my gyno didn't give me a stage. And to be honest, I didn't even think to ask. And I feel stupid for not asking questions. But I was stunned and didn't ask much really. He did tell me that it's rare. I will ask the oncologist when I see him. I'm sure I will have a list of questions by then. I do know that stages 2 to 4 have spread to other parts of the body, from my own reading about it. So hopefully it was caught in time. Now I'm so glad that I decided on the hysterectomy.

So sorry to hear of your diagnosis.  Granulosa cell tumors are one of the better ovarian cancers in terms of prognosis.  They are germ cell tumors meaning they originate in the cells of the ovary that produce eggs and not in the other solid parts of the ovary, called the stroma (worse prognosis).  They are rare, only maybe 2% of ovarian cancer originates in the granulosa cells.

Granulosa cell tumors tend to be caught sooner before they spread, partly because they tend to grow slower than other tumors, but also because they tend to produce estrogen which causes heavy periods or postmenopausal bleeding; both of which tend to cause women to see their doctor sooner than later.  Since your doctor waited until 6 weeks postop to even tell you about it, I would suspect that the tumor was completely confined within the ovary or he/she would've wanted to get you to a specialist sooner.  Ovarian tumors tend to spread locally first, to the other ovary and the surface of the uterus and tubes; so a look at your pathology report should help.  If you haven't had a scan, I imagine the oncologist will order one to get a look at the lymph nodes and other structures.

Best of luck to you, I'll say a prayer.  You can handle this.

I've heard that The Club and others are a big deterrent and also prevent damage to the lock like you experienced.  It is easily seen from outside the car and any thief who sees it is just going to move on to an easier car to steal rather than mess around  breaking in and trying to get the device off the wheel.

As a fellow quilter, I salute you!  This is gorgeous and so meaningful.  I've been quilting for 42 years after taking a 4 week course when I was in med school and I STILL don't enjoy the actual quilting.  I am also easily bored, so I only make baby quilts and wall hangings/pillows these days. To quilt them, I take the easy way out and 'stitch in the ditch' by hand.  I have paid others to quilt and finish bigger tops that I've worked on.

I am currently working on a Christmas wall hanging for my sister, a prayer quilt for a friend's daughter with cancer and another quilt for a different sister that I put away a couple of years ago and decided it was time to get 'er done.  I also need a baby quilt for a baby shower in a few weeks.  Need to get to work.

Thank you for your input. I have been doing a lot if reading up on it these past few days. And I do feel much better, especially reading what you have to say. I do have a copy of the pathology report, and everything else is clear. Other than a Paratubal cyst. No evidence of malignancy in the uterus, cervix or fallopian tubes.  I feel confident that it is caught early, as I got my butt to my doctor when I first started bleeding. They rushed me into see the gynocologist within a week, and I had surgery within 3 months. Again, thanks for your expertise and concern, I do appreciate it.

Paratubal cysts are benign,  a lot of women have them; they're an embryologic remnant from the development of the reproductive tract.  Not at all related to granulosa cells.

@NotabugSorry to bother you with a medical question on your free time, but something you mentioned in the Joystin topic sparked a question: how does FactorV Leiden affect pregnancies? I have it, but did not know until long after my children were born (found out after I got a DVT in my 40s). Was I just lucky that my pregnancies were uneventful? (And fortunately my daughters did not inherit it from me)

Factor V Leiden is the most common genetic mutation affecting the clotting factors in people of European ancestry.  Somewhere around 8% of the population carries the gene for it; so a lot of people have it.

If someone is heterozygous, meaning they inherited one Factor V gene and one normal gene from their parents, their chances of having a blood clot are around 5%.  That means 95% of people never have a problem and that includes women who've taken birth control pills and given birth.  Most people who have Factor V Leiden have just one gene.  People who  have two genes (homozygous) for it are more likely to have clotting issues but still most never do.

I had a pregnant patient whose father had a thrombotic stroke and was found to have Factor V Leiden as a contributing factor.  She also tested positive for the gene.  She'd had 4 kids and took the birth control pill for more than 10 years in the interim and never had a problem.  Her kids are now grown, she's well into her 60's and she still hasn't had an issue.

My brother in law is a marathoner (aka crazy).  He once ran 'rim to rim to rim' in the Grand Canyon with some friends.  It took them about 13 hours to do it, all in one day.  Turns out that there had been a drought and some of the water stops were dry so they didn't drink the amount of water they'd planned.  Then, he hopped on a plane and flew home.  Next day. his calves were sore so he went running because that is what crazy people do.  His legs felt better after that and he was hospitalized with a PE a couple days later.  Turned out he had Factor V as did his mother and sister.  His mom had 4 kids and his sister had 1; neither ever had a problem, still haven't.  Had he not overexercised and been dehydrated and took a long plane ride; he probably never would have either.  He's now on anticoagulation for the rest of his life, except, of course, when he doesn't take it because he is doing a marathon.  As I said; crazy.

In the context of pregnancy, could it contribute to miscarriage? Problems with labor/delivery? Or is the risk solely the possibility of blood clots in the mother.

It can cause small blood clots to form in the blood vessels of the placenta which can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth although that is less likely with Factor V than with other clotting disorders.

If you can, please say a prayer for the safe return of a 9 year-old little boy in my area.  He didn’t get on the bus yesterday and was last seen running into the woods.  It’s going to be in the 20’s tonight….so it’s imperative they locate him quickly, it’s just heartbreaking.  FBI and local authorizes have been searching since yesterday.

Yes especially in cold weather. I could see it ,maybe, in warm weather as an adv

After waiting about 4 months, my new sofa arrived this morning.   And---it is the wrong sofa.  I ordered a smaller sofa (bigger than a love seat) that is a double recliner, and is motorized.  It arrived as a manual recline.  I like the size, I like the style, I like the leather I ordered.  So now I have to wait another 4 months for it to arrive again.  The store is letting me keep this one to use until the correct one arrives, which is nice of them, but after all the conversations I had with the custom order guy I am really surprised the order was not correct.  So is the order guy.  I'm glad I can use this one for the time being since I have already given my old one to a family who wanted it.  I'm also glad I purchased from a local store.  I think it would have a lot more problem making the correction with an on-line seller.  Oh, well.  At least people can sit in my living room.

That’s incredible.  I’d be disappointed too.  I guess they don’t know what happened.    A few months ago, I went to a local Mattress Firm and selected a replacement mattress, since the one I ordered on line wasn’t working for me.  It was seamless.  The rep calculated everything and figured a way to use discounts to give me a more expensive mattress for just about the same price as I paid originally.

Hello everyone - sort of emerging from the two year mark of losing Sweet Son.  Everything feels different.  Yet the same.  Hard to describe.

I am so sorry for your pain @lookeyloo. We have enjoyed sharing your memories of Sweet Son here, and I hope this little anonymous corner of the internet has offered you some comfort. There is no word in the English language for a parent who has lost a child, that is how deeply the pain cuts. I can imagine it is very hard to describe.

I think they should let you keep that sofa indefinitely, and you could sell it second hand when your current one arrives. FOUR MONTHS, I understand things take time, but it was THEIR mix up and now you're inconvenienced.
