S03.E08: You're Lookin' At Country

Cranberry

Recommended Posts

It’s country music’s biggest night of the year at the 48th Annual CMA Awards in Nashville. Up for a total of 11 awards between them, Rayna and Luke’s evening begins with an unfortunate hitch when Rayna stumbles upon Luke’s pre-nuptial agreement documents, causing for some friction between them. Later, Avery’s parents are in town for the show as Avery is nominated for a CMA Award. What should be a lovely reunion takes a turn when Avery introduces them to Juliette. Meanwhile, Gunnar and Zoey’s relationship is tested and Deacon and Scarlett watch the awards from home.

Rayna being freaked about the pre-nup is the DUMBEST thing I've seen on this show.

1)Rayna owns a record label and a company. She is worth a lot more than Luke.

2) Rayna and Luke are both successful but both have kids who could use finanicial security.

3) Rayna divorced Teddy over bad financials decisions and financial matters and worrying about their shared credit rating. So you think Rayna would have trouble trusting a man with money.

It seems out of character that Rayna would be upset over a pre-nup. It also seems more in Rayna's character to ask for a prenup versus the man who got her name tattooed on his arm.

I don't usually get into the music too much, but I liked that song that Will and his wife were singing. Luke is showing himself to be an attention grabbing, controlling bully. Rayna you fool run away from this guy.

I'm sure Teddy could find somebody to sleep with who isn't a professional. He is just asking to get busted.

I preferred Layla's hair in the updo.

Sadie and Rayna are still my favorite potential couple. Then again Sadie has chemistry with Luke! This woman has chemistry with anyone.

I like the music in this episode.

I want to the professional (Teddy's girl) to go away. And Teddy is good-looking enough and has a good job and could have his pick of women over 30 in Nashville and even a few under 30.

Gunnar is officially the new Juliette. He never gets to be happy.

I thought Zoey made a tough but somewhat understandable decision. I like the idea of her having a career.

Love Juliette and Avery, but couldn't she ever have nice in-laws? Or at least ones that wouldn't judge her for being the daughter of a drug addict and having a crappy childhood? Those two things are sh***y reasons to blame anyone.

I loved this episode until we had to endure yet another sappy Luke Wheeler apology and yet another moment where Rayna loves him and accepts him and forgives him and blah blah blah blah.

They are quickly losing me.

I was on the phone and must have misunderstood. It looked like Juliette had sex with Avery's dad when she was about 11 years old. Please tell me that's not what happened!

I agree about Gunnar. He looks constipated all the time now.

I heard an anvil falling for Luke and Sadie

Heck, one of them fell on my cat's tale. Hard hats are required from now until adulterous bone-age.

Juliette got Avery with that look when he said his father was a judgmental unforgiving asshole.

Well, that was expected.  Rayna dominates the CMAs, because she is the queen of Nashville, and this show ain't ever going to make her lose anything.  Hell, even her protege won, which I'm not against, but since we really haven't seen a lot of Sadie yet, I found it strange she would be popular enough with voters to beat Will. Meanwhile, it at least exposes Luke like the childish, sore loser that he is.  What a nitwit.  Of course, he tearfully apologizes, and Rayna seems to forgive him.  And, so it goes.

Now, this is the Ted I remember!  The one who falls head over heels for someone, and practically stalks her, and almost get his dumb ass exposed.  Oh, Teddy, Teddy.  When Jeff blackmails you, I'm not even going to feel sorry for you.

Of course, Micah runs off, Gunnar flips a lid, and pushes Zoey away.  I wish I would care more, but I don't.  At least he's got a trophy!

Juliette and Avery didn't get one, but at least they are slowly continuing to fix their relationship.  You can do it, guys!

Something bad is going to happen with Layla.  She is this close to just snapping and telling everyone in the media to fuck off.

Deacon enjoying Rayna winning over Luke was fun, but did Scarlett literally jump up and down on the couch?  Is she six years-old? Is she actually Tom Cruise?  What the hell?!

OMG! Rayna swept the CMAs?! I'm so shocked! And Luke was an assy, sore loser who then groveled out an apology and Rayna took him back AGAIN? Who could have possibly seen any of that coming??

I swear, it's like Rayna's a battered wife with no battering. She had more balls back when Deacon hit her.

Deacon and Scarlett were pretty awesome. Love Avery and Juliette. Bye Zoey?

Wow! Who knew so much drama happened behind the scenes at awards shows?

Luke is a selfish, whiny bully. I can understand his disappointment, but all Rayna did was graciously thank her collaborators, isn't that standard operating procedure under those circumstances? Did he assume that we was going to win - beat Rayna - in all of those categories? Also, did we know that he was only married for six years? Didn't he allude (the first time Rayna visited his ranch, during Teddy's wedding) to his wife recently remarrying quickly after their divorce?

I half expected Layla to say "I deferred Harvard; and he is gayer than Paris in the twenties." Lost opportunity.

Loved Juliet's dress. Hayden is so beautiful. I've not always been Juliet's biggest fan, but this is the anniversary of her mother's death (I'm completely confused by the timeline; shouldn't it have been two years?), and I thought her remembering that was understandable and realistic.

I liked Sadie's song. I like Sadie, but I agree that the Sadie/Luke...Suke...Ladie...WheelStone...Stoner...anvils are too obvious to ignore. Wonder if they'll do it in Rayna's room with the creepy Daphne and Maddie portraits watching?

Deacon was so painfully sweet cheering on Rayna. Glad he was recognized, though it was my least favorite song of last season.

I don't blame Zoey, she was in a no-win position. Girl, head to the west coast and make it on your own.

Teddy...dude...she's a hooker! You're sprung...on a hooker...and you're the mayor...and you're jealous!

Juliette and Avery were the real winners tonight.  I could watch them for the full hour.  And please Nashville writers, don't chase me away from this show by doing anything to harm their baby girl.   Parenthood does not limit characters.  It creates potential storylines.  Juliette can hire a nanny and still be a big country star.  Avery's father is a jerk, but at least his mom is nice.

Deacon and Scarlett watching the awards on TV was made of adorable.

Teddy, Teddy, Teddy, you can do so much better.  Why do you think so little of your charms?  And why do I have the sinking feeling Jeff had a camera in that room?

Why do the promos always feature the Rayna storyline to the exclusion of all others?  The people who are marketing this show are not making wise choices.

I was so expecting Luke to backhand Rayna in that bathroom, just...so...expecting...damn. I just don't know how she could forgive the guy who told her the only reason she is still relevant is b/c he deigned to propose to her on stage the day of her album drop.

When Deacon was about to text Rayna, I was hoping the knock at the door was Rayna to see Deacon.

Now since Zoey is out of the Gunnar picture I expect her to overreact to seeing Scarlett w/Gunnar and not-his-son-Micah at any point now.

Well...just as I said when Sadie was introduced, she is going to end up sleeping w/Luke now b/c she wants what Rayna has.

Was there some reason why the girls couldn't be w/dad Deacon and uncle Deacon to watch the CMA's? For a guy who wants to see his daughter all the time they sure don't show them together much lately.

I did like Rayna saying how her girls will eventually be up on that stage accepting awards, b/c let's face it those two girls can really sing. I want an album of the girls singing now.

Hayden just has to lift an eyebrow to make the scene. I giggled t that scene.

Question of the night - why were the CMA awards held in what looked like a high school gym complete with PowerPoint graphics? Even the bathrooms were sketchy. I expected Luke to go hit a locker.

Avery's dad sucks at parenting. And that explains a lot about asshat Avery in the first season. He was pushing for success to show daddy dearest that he could do it. Or I'm giving too much credit to the writers....

Laura B. has a really nice voice. And I was thrilled we didn't hear Rayna 'sing' tonight.

If Zoey leaves, no great loss.  She's not interesting.

Rayna and Luke have no chemistry whatsoever.

Deacon is only one of the few bright spots and Juliette and Avery should just have a show of their own.

I enjoyed this episode.

The deadpan look Juliette gave Avery when he claimed he wasn't a (I'm paraphrasing) judgmental asshat like his father was gold, immediately dovetailed with Avery's subtle realization that he indeed was/had been. I hope they continue to get stronger together.

Luke and Rayna, on the other hand, can end their union soon as far as I care. The preview of Deacon declaring his love to Rayna leaves me rolling my eyes wishing he could move beyond his sad sack persona of late--it would be great if they could be good friends and continue to work together (as well as be good parents for Maddie), but that wouldn't sit well with Luke, eh. Rayna's surprise that Luke would want a pre-nup was kind of silly and naive.

Deacon and Scarlett watching the CMAs together was cute.

I hope Layla can soon rise above letting random people making fun of her get under her skin like that--that crap is a downside of celebritydom but there's no getting around it nowadays. Liked her schooling the interviewer on the red carpet, but that and the "I deferred Harvard" isn't going to score her points with the country crowd. The backlash is going to be a bitch. I felt sorry for her again this epi, and Will was good with her again too.

I loved Layla's eye-roll after she read that line about wearing her hair up so things don't go over her head. The deferring Harvard line was great, but I would rather her have seen her lines on the teleprompter and instead said "i'm not saying that." She really needs to dump Will and get her ass back to Harvard, b/c I can't see her storyline ending well at this point.

I am giving Deacon the benefit of the doubt and hoping his declaration is out of context in the preview and we are really in for him telling her to get over herself.

Literally turned the laptop back on to post this ... (yes, I need therapy)...

IT A with Auntie Anxiety, where were Daphne and Maddie??? We had Deacon mention fishing with Maddie, but then the girls vanished, not even a quick shot of them watching the awards at home. Were they locked up with a drunk like little Juliette was? Or off with the unseen 'nanny'?

Airwair, maybe it was the tiny crowd that made the arena seem smaller?

Rayna has a music label and just inherited her father's millions/billions and yet she's insulted at a pre-nup? She and Teddy used to fight about money all the time too, she should be welcoming a prenup. Rayna was awful last week, Luke was awful this week. They actually kind of work together. I don't know what Deacon's in love with.

There needs to be more Juliette, I understand a lighter schedule because Hayden's so pregnant but needs more her, less Rayna.

I guess Gunnar's single again for Scarlette.

Seemed odd that Deacon gets home at the start of the CMAs on tv, after having just been with Maddie fishing...her mom is up for six awards (and who cares about her [perhaps] soon-to-be stepfather's noms), her father (and all their adult friends!) is nominated too and Mayor Teddy is apparently attending the event solo...so what are the girls doing on this big night? Surely Maddie is not alone babysitting Daphne after the party debacle, though Zoey doesn't fare much better in looking after Micah...a precocious 9-year-old wandering off into a crowded unfamiliar arena during a televised show, two seconds after she stands up in the aisle...maybe his unstable childhood fosters an 'I can take of myself' boldness. When you gotta "go", you gotta go!

One of the things I have enjoyed about Deacon, is the fact that he plays a Man who has loved one Woman, for a huge part of his life.

I suspect part of it is the connection they shared from their earliest days, and the fact that he knows what she went thru, for many years, dealing with his alcoholism. He has said more than once, that she saved his life. While I think he's done a great job of saving himself, at one time, or maybe more than once, maybe she did, or at least, was a huge part of it.

A lesser actor playing the role could seem pathetic, or worse, weirdly stalker like and a bit unbalanced.

I think they've shared so many dreams, and goals, they know each other better than anyone, that no matter what, that connection is there.

Most of the time, we see a Woman who , loves like this and fights for what she believes is her true love.

Guys are the strong, silent, stoic type, who won't put it all on the line ,like Deacon does.

He believes that they're soul mates, who love each other deeply, certainly more than they could ever love anyone else.

Could they make it work? I don't know, there's a whole boatload of history there, certainly some of it very dark

Should they try? My romantic self says "Oh heck yes". The chemistry that Connie and Chip bring to the screen, tells me it could make for some great storytelling.

Maybe moving on is the healthier option. Who wants to be that healthy??

I was expecting him to hit her at some point.  Perhaps we can have Luke cheat with Sadie, then get angry at Rayna and blame her for his cheating because she was working.  Then he'll hit her for making him cheat.  Just seems to fit his character.

Question of the night - why were the CMA awards held in what looked like a high school gym complete with PowerPoint graphics? Even the bathrooms were sketchy. I expected Luke to go hit a locker.

Wow.  If that's the real place, those bathrooms looked like a high school.  I was expecting to see a couple of teen boys stumble out of the handicapped stall in a cloud of smoke.

As we've learned on one of the commercial threads, perhaps an "incontinence specialist" could help young Micah with his problem.  Of course he could also consider wearing Depend for special occasions.

pattycat, I totally get what you're saying about Deacon. I think that there is something special between people when they have been through stuff like that together. That's not to say that you can't find love with other people because you can. You can love other people deeply and intensely, but there is something about people who have known you at your worst that is different. I'm not saying that's always a good thing, but it's definitely different than just telling someone all the crap you have been through.

When I was a teenager, my boyfriend's father committed suicide around the same time that my parents almost divorced. Because of those shared experiences, we understand each other in a way that most people don't (although I would never wish those situations on other people). It's been years since all that stuff happened (we have since broken up), but we still have that bond so I totally get what you are saying about Deacon and Rayna. It's kind of similar to having friends who knew you in junior high/middle school. They were there for the awkward years so they remember that old version of you. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are better friends than people you met in college or as an adult, but there is that connection from knowing you back then.

While it was kind of annoying to see Saint Rayna win all six awards, I was just glad that it meant Luke was losing (and Jeff by extension). And I loved that as the night went on, Luke's "yay, Rayna!" attitude devolved into barely being able to paste a fake smile on his face for the cameras. There have been signs of his jealousy and immaturity but this really brought it to a head. Rayna did NOTHING wrong by thanking Deacon and Liam. If she hadn't thanked them, I would have accused her of being an ungrateful dick. Acknowledging her collaborators was no reason for Luke to get all pouty and jealous.

I totally agree that a prenup is in both Luke and Rayna's best interests but I can understand Rayna being upset in the moment that she found the document because he clearly had the entire thing drawn up before even mentioning it to her. A prenup is supposed to protect the interests of both parties so they should have discussed what they are comfortable with and then had each of their lawyers approve the terms to make sure that it was a fair agreement. Instead, Luke did this all on his own without any discussion or input from Rayna and had a legal document for her to sign.

I am not looking forward to Sadie's ex showing up and causing trouble. Obviously he is an abusive stalker so there will be drama galore. I predict that Luke will save her and they will have "just survived a traumatic incident" sex. On a related note, I remember when Adele's ex wanted a cut of her album sales because the songs were written about him. That takes some fucking cheek, to want monetary compensation for being an ass to your girlfriend. At least Luke was able to cheer Sadie up a little with his words of encouragement.

Oh, Gunnar. How is it that I used to like you so much? Blaming Zoey for your non-kid running off was ridiculous. He and Luke were in a similar category for me tonight - it's great that you apologized for your inappropriate rudeness, but it would be better if you just refrained from being a dick in the first place. I am glad that Zoey broke up with Gunnar. She did not sign up to be a mother to a 9 year old kid. It seems like she was the one picking up everyone else's slack, picking him up from school, figuring out where he left his shoes, etc.

I officially love Avery's mom. When she told her husband to shut it, it totally reminded me of Baby's mom saying, "Sit down, Jake!" in Dirty Dancing.

Teddy is an idiot. She is an escort. You aren't allowed to be jealous. And really, they hung out twice and he's this obsessed with her? He really is like a 13 year old boy.

Teddy, Teddy. What can we say?

Has the Man ever made a good choice, romantically?

From marrying a Woman, that he knew was still in love with another Man, to poor Pork Blood Peggy, to car sex with a Woman, who was semi living, with his arch rival, and now, hooking up with a Hooker?

He's handsome , intelligent, and the Mayor of a major city, and he's becoming hooked on a Hooker?

Do they have a serious shortage of Psychiatrists in Nashville?

My jaw hit the floor when Luked claimed all of Rayna's wins because of the perfect timing of his proposal. He really showed his ass last night and I was appalled that Rayna went on to thank him in her final award speech for his love and support. I swear she looked like a zombie in the bedroom with him later. If this doesn't dissuade her from marrying him, what will? Surely not Deacon's little love profession in the promo. Maybe Luke breaks up with her because of the Rolling Stone article?

Loved Juliette and Avery, especially her sly little smile when he left after unzipping her dress. He's back ;)

Layla is going to try to kill herself. I was surprised Will didn't win best new artist, Sadie's hardly been around. Bad night all around for Edgehill.

Loved Deacon and Scarlett, but I'm really upset at the preview of him throwing himself at Rayna again. She's treated him like garbage all season, time to move on from this shell of the woman you fell in love with. Would have liked to have seen at least one scene from the big fishing trip, miss Deacon and Maddie scenes.

Glad Zoey left. Now to get her to actually go to LA.

These writers never surprise us, do they? Rayna, of course, wins all of the awards, Luke acts like an ass and Rayna forgives him. Hopefully the eventual Luke-Sadie hook-up will teach Rayna to be more careful about who she agrees to marry and who she declares to be her BFF. Rayna needs to take her daughters and go on an extended vacation because she is becoming the most annoying part of this show.

Question of the night - why were the CMA awards held in what looked like a high school gym complete with PowerPoint graphics? Even the bathrooms were sketchy. I expected Luke to go hit a locker.

Agree and am surprised to see the response from another poster that this is the actual place that the CMAs are held. It looked like they were sitting on folding chairs.

Yes, now we have Teddy the Loser in Love. Never mind the fact that the "evil" music executive who is his ex-wife's arch rival obviously set him up with this hooker and now - to no one's surprise - will blackmail him. Teddy will capitulate to Jeff's demands. Rayna will be outraged but will work it all out because...well, she is Rayna. Maybe Teddy will seize the opportunity to leave town and this show. Eric Close needs to cut a deal so he can continue to direct episodes and leave Teddy behind.

I don't care about Will and Layla. Such wasted potential to write a truly interesting storyline.

Meanwhile, Gunnar is stuck in a storyline about a child that may/may not be his rather than one about a rising song-writer. With Zoe gone (good for her), the re-pairing with Scarlett will happen because every character has to have a romance on this show.

The only ones that I am rooting for are Juliette and Avery.

The prenup drama was dumb. They should be standard, imo. I'm glad it was Luke who had the papers though. Rayna isn't great but I would never think she would try to take his money. I don't trust Luke at all. Although I'm sure he has more money than her. He has a barbecue sauce and pimps his brand out all over the place.

I thought Juliette would win and she would be in the bathroom.

Avery's mom seems wonderful.

I kind of felt sorry for Layla. Kind of.

Teddy- stop making terrible choices.

Micah looks so much like the boy from Spy Kids that it must be intentional.

I liked the seat filler when Rayna was presenting.

Keith Urban should've won Entertainer of The Year. He's always nominated and never wins. Drives me crazy! At least in this universe Luke Bryan didn't win.

oh man i liked this episode.

I also hate Luke now. I also feel bad for Zoey, who is kind of like a sexy lamp. honestly, she holds no real weight on the show which is a shame because she is talented, for sure. I'm glad Rayna won everything, because Luke, imo, deserves nothing. he is awful. (Not surprising though.) What was surprising was that Juliette and Avery didn't win and I was actually really sad and I wanted them too. Although, those flashbacks seemed misplaced. lIke not the first one, but all the ones after, so. Also, this  episode I likes Scarlett and Deacon.

Oh dear god, I hope not. I hope she just goes to Harvard. (I can't believe she deferred Harvard for that singing show, dang) because right now, she isn't doing anything either. I think they have way too many characters and they just have to get rid of some of them. Also I am so over Teddy. That is all!

I think my favorite part of this episode was Deacon and Scarlet watching tv.  Its one of the few times I've actually liked Scarlet.

Gunnar has devolved into an asshat because of that stupid kid.  I can't believe that the mayor of a city is wandering around all by himself at his city's biggest awards show.  Where are his handlers?  shouldn't he be getting ready to run for re-election?  and can he be more stupid than to obsess over a hooker.  I hope the character runs for congress and wins so Eric Close can escape this disaster of a character.  Also, for some reason the actress playing the hooker looked completely different than she did before.

I really liked this episode, and it was great choice to show Deacon and Scarlett watching it and filtering the going ons through their own personal stuff. Thank God at least one of the writers realizes that Deacon and Scarlett have great chemistry and their relationship is one of her best traits. (Don't get me wrong, I love Scarlett, though.) I know that logically speaking it would have made sense for Maddie (at least) and Daphne to be hanging with Deacon, but it made sense dramatically to have Deacon and Scarlett alone being fairly frank with each other.

Loved Juliette and Avery, especially her sly little smile when he left after unzipping her dress. He's back ;)

Those two. JJ and HP are two of the strongest actors on the show, and the most subtle in their choices, and it pays off every time they are together.

And Teddy. Oh, Teddy. Yes, she comped you one but she is still a hooker. Still, once I finally set aside my disbelief last season I have come to really enjoy his stupidity about women.

I really loved Sadie Stone's song. I'm not familiar with LB so I didn't know what to expect, but it's nice to see the introduction of her character start coming to fruition.

Poor Layla. I think she's doomed. Is there a suicide, murder-suicide, or suicide pact down the road? I'd love instead to see those two figure out a way to help each other out of their situation.

I'm thinking Layla will make a suicide attempt and, successful or not, that will be what brings Will out of the closet on his own.  He does care about her even if he went about the marriage thing all wrong.  Hopefully, Layla will survive, support Will through his coming out, but taking herself on a long European vacation and then going to Harvard.  I like them as friends.

And all love to Juliette and Avery.  I've been rooting for them since the very first ep.
