S50.E17: Jack Black / Elton John and Brandi Carlile

Cold Open: Of course we open with the tariffs. Its funny because the economy is about to go in the crapper for the dumbest possible reasons. I did get a big laugh out of the big board being the Cheesecake Factory menu, and how they snuck in a parody Tesla ad. That, I wish was longer and less awkward. I heard a reference to "get me to God's country," didn't I?

Monologue: Jack Black dressed like he's about to go to bed after this monologue. And man, don't remind me it's been 20 years since the last time he hosted. I watched that live and it's an all timer of a show. Christmastime for The Jews, Lazy Sunday, the King Kong song in the monologue, AND the Spelling Bee sketch were all in it. He's still got it (tossing Kyle G under the bus notwithstanding). Also just casually passing over Judy Gold, Bill Burr and the rest of the Glengarry Glen Ross cast in the upper seats.

Love Match: I wasn't sold on this until Jack Black was caught in the lie about not knowing who Indiana Jones is. Loved the punchline of Bowen as Jack Sparrow. I was actually sad it ended there, I wanted to see the other alternate bachelors!

Flaming Hot Preparation H: The reveal that the Cheetos commercial was actually a Prep H ad was great. Did NOT expect it to end with Chester applying it to Jack Black.

Screen Time: Jack Black reaction faces + random eagle screech sound effect = comedy gold. (Even though it's the screech of a red-tailed hawk) I thought it was an app, but that it was an actual eagle was a fun payoff.

The First Play: I realize these sketched do not work without Jack Black. His earnest enthusiasm towards not knowing how to act in the audience of a play is just an energy that's hard to pull off.

Goth Kid on Vacation: Oh no, it me. I wasn't THAT goth when I was a teen, but it captured my energy perfectly. Wasn't expecting Jack Black to break into Welcome to The Black Parade, either. Or someone playing Magic: The Gathering. (Edit: didn’t even catch that the graphics novels were The Killing Joke and Johnny The Homicidal Maniac)

WU: Another jab at Morgan Wallen! "RFK Jr, seen here watching a chicken sneeze on a baby" was great. So many great Che bits, like the free burrito day one. And we all saw the punchline of the HBCU joke coming, and the audience still gasped at it lol. "Imagine if I told that joke!" you're so right, Colin.

Grant and Alyssa are back! Alyssa definitely looks like she plays clarinet and watches Doctor Who(ever).

Colin was the comedian at last year's WHCD, and I loved that it was just an excuse for Ego to shine. I don't know why Miss Eggy cracked me up so much, but it did. And it got the audience to yell "SHIT!"

Silk Pajamas: It's been a while since we've seen someone fly on a harness, hasn't it? Jack, Sarah, and Bowen were just having fun up there. And hi Brandi Carlile!

Potluck Jam: So many bass guitars for Tom Petty's "Free falling." And the Simpsons theme. And "A McDonalds Number 2" is certainly a way to describe Mikey's tattoo. (edit: the makeup and wardrobe crew certainly earning a…couple of Emmy’s with Heidi’s getup in this one…)

WWII Kissing Couple: Hey, a sketch acknowledging the nurse and sailor in the famous photo were random strangers! And Jack Black's character was clearly a dig at Dr. Seuss (seriously, do NOT look up his post-Pearl Harbor wartime cartoons) This was fun, even if it fizzled out at the end.

Jack Black and Elton John: they still got it! Next week is Jon Hamm and I am HYPED for that.

Yeah, the sound was off. WU had the most laughs for me. The codebreaker being added to Hitler's chat! The Morgan Wallen joke! Grant and Alyssa! and Che and Jost falling over themselves with reactions to Ego's WHCD speech.

@Galileo908, thanks for pointing out The GGR cast: I had to go back and look again! And I thought The First Play wasn't going to work, but I really liked the audience's innocent participation.

I didn't even catch Kieran Culkin the first go around! You can see them at the 2:32 mark. And apparently Questlove and someone from Chicago Fire can be spotted, too.

edit: and some kids from School of Rock are sitting behind Bill Burr.

I pretty much thought this episode sucked.  (I did have trouble hearing it, though, so that may have been part of it.)

The Victory Day sketch was the only slightly amusing one for me.

WU, of course, rocked. Loved the Morgan Wallen jab.

Again, no for me on the cold open. Still playing them too benign, whereas last week's with the teen girls was very well done.

I laughed more in the flaming hot Prep H commercial than I have at all the episodes this season combined. "Fight fire with fire!" "No! Don't do that!" LOL.

Also, props for the concept of "the first play." It was original and low-key funny, and honestly, I feel like we are a half-step from that today at movie theatres.

I skipped the cold open because at this point nothing Trump is doing is funny, even as satire. They need to jump ahead to an America in flames and a pic of Trump on the wall behind the SS guard.

I also skipped Jack Black's monologue once he started singing. He's just never been my thing as a singer.

Never been a big EJ fan, and still, what was that? He looked like he was trying to remember the words and get them out fast enough before he forgot them.

WU had a lot of snappy zingers. Some edgy. Well done.

Even liked the couple... "go stupid on a woodwind." And BTW, Jane Wickline is really very pretty. And Ego's character bit came right off the set of Sanford & Son.

Yeah, more singing in a skit, this with a couple in PJs. Nope. And now two in a row. Nope.

VIctory Day had a good first 5 seconds, but the rest was just repetition.

One of the better shows this season, YMMV.

That was Trump’s reaction to “McDonald’s Island” picture with the burger and dancing McNuggets. The crowd loved the reference to last week’s viral moment.

Duh, I didn't get the connection, so thanks. He said something about Tina Fey, so I thought "Get me to God's country" was a line from 30 Rock

Overall, I liked this ep. I thought the CO showed Trump's stupidity pretty well, so that's a plus. I got a good laugh from him saying, "Now it's time for the really big piece of cardboard." And then him explaining the mathematical formula was, I'm sure, accurate.

I love Jack Black and his energy. I saw Bill Burr in the audience, but missed the other actors. And then as JB headed back down the stairs, there was a young man who was shaking his head, looking not at all happy. Wonder what that was about.

Love Match was fun. At first I thought JB was truthful about not knowing what Indiana Jones was, so I got a big laugh out of him messing up and showing he was lying. Andrew was good as well. Loved him describing Bachelor #1 as a Jane Lynch lookalike. Oh, and earlier when JAJ asked when he would get a question. One thing I didn't like was when they were getting all new bachelors, and the third bachelor spot was introduced as Bachelor #1. Huh? Why?

The Flamin' Hot Preparation H ad was great.

I liked the one-ups-man-ship sketch, too. I don't usually get laughs out of cast members breaking, but here I enjoyed it.

First Play was good.

Goth Kid on Vacation was also a good one. Michael was perfect.

Grant and Alyssa in WU were great. Well-written and -acted. A 1-year old ate his grandfather's ashes?!? Wow. That's gross and ... something. How would a 1-yr old get ahold of the container? It must not have been on the mantel. Maybe it was just brought home and sat on the coffee table. I guess the baby must have been walking by then. Weird almost unbelievable story.

Ego was great as Miss Eggy. "The HELL!"

The floating sketch was fun. JB and Sarah were really good.

I liked the various characters in the Pot Luck Jam sketch. My favorite bit was when JB said, "Is that a McDonald's No. 2 on your chest?" and Mikey responded "Yeah, 'cause I'm lovin' it."

I guess I loved just about everything. My favorite thing in the WWII nurse-kissing sketch was JB's voice. I'm a sucker for old-timey voices.

As for the music, I'm sorry to say I could not understand the lyrics in the first song. Just no idea. I'm glad the second song was a slow one. That was beautiful, plus it featured Brandi's voice.

They didn't capture the full stupidity of how they used the formula.  Two of the terms in the denominator were set to 0.25 and 4, so the formula simplifies down to trade deficit/total imports. It might not be shocking to hear this is exactly what Chat GPT gives as the way to get a trade balance to zero.  I don't know why they need an economic team when AI spits out the results in seconds.

The Flamin’ Hot Preparation H was the funniest thing they’ve done in a while.

My God, I forgot there was an episode of Russell Brand and Chris Brown together. Yikes. So how many rapist hosts does that make for SNL?

Don't forget Trump's two SNL hosting gigs.

And two murderers..Robert Blake and OJ

Only real complaint I had about this one was that the sound mixing was worse than usual, I could barely understand Jack Black at times. Even in the pre-tapes!

I'm OLD and watch most TV with closed-captions.  This time they were so far behind, I'd have to rewind and "watch" with the sound off.

I could not understand what the audience said in response to Ego during Weekend Update that got such a reaction.  Anyone know?

We're in AZ, so see the show much later.  Checked online the moment we couldn't hear/understand it.  Consesus:  "SHIT!"

Thought it was just my ears not hearing a lot, so I am relieved to hear others had issues.

My favorite was the “Play” sketch.  The silliness of it was great and Jack Black and his expressions very funny.

I may be aging out of some of the references, so that and the audio made it difficult for me.  And too much Jack Black singing sketches.

I want to go back and listen to Ego’s bit again.  It looked funny.

Was looking forward to Elton and Brandi, but I was underwhelmed. ☹️

The sound was so bad, I thought it was my hearing, but when I tried to turn on the captions, there were none-- I guess the auto captioning couldn't figure out what was happening, either.

But of what I could discern, I thought the Goth on Vacation was hilarious, and I enjoyed some of the other stuff, too.

I love the relationship between Elton and Brandi-- the music is almost immaterial for me; I just like their relationship. You can really see it when they do interviews.

I somehow missed the VJ sketch. Will have to look for it online.

Pretty much nothing I have seen from Jane Wickline has been memorable so far but I did like that couple. It's impressive that they actually wrote it so they are into each other and care about what the other person likes. Because it would have been super easy to make it the shy nerdy girl who settles for a guy who doesn't really care about her.

Cold Open:
It'll be the most depressing depression ever!
Morgan Wallen catching strays right off the bat.
Self-vandalizing Teslas sounds about right. Eliminate the middleman.

Opening Monologue:
Jack Black is a host who gives 100%. Too bad he didn't host the anniversary show.

Is Chloe Fineman okay?

Wearing Indiana Jones as a brand, like Tommy Hilfiger. Maybe the dating game contestants wanted to be on Let's Make a Deal but the audience was already full.

Flamin' Hot Preparation H. It'll make you want to die so you'll stop caring about the hemorrhoids.

Was Elton John cheating on Lady Gaga with Brandi Carlile? I thought he sounded great. No lip syncing.

Weekend Update:
Morgan Wallen catching more strays.
Dang, Colin went in on RFK Jr. with the whole milk vs. hole milk joke. Bravo.
Jane does look like she'd go stupid on a woodwind. And break a bitch off like a KitKat bar if they come for her man.
Che's HBCU joke: where was the lie tho?
Miss Eggy don't play. Was the audience expected to say something other than "shit" or did SNL deliberately encourage an FCC fine?

It was pretty cool of Brandi Carlile to wear that harness in the bedroom sketch. The humor went over my head unfortunately. 😏

I hadn't noticed before how well-endowed Heidi is, at least with the assist of prosthetics. Free fallin' indeed. And of course a basset hound plays bass. Sheesh. Plus another lowkey jab at Morgan Wallen, on JAJ's character's shirt. Trifecta!

Given the decades of controversy about that V-J Day kiss photo, I'm surprised SNL tried to make it funny.

SNL's simple tribute to Val Kilmer's passing was kind.

Gee, no one walked off the stage during the goodnights. Imagine that. Anyhoo, I think this was the best episode of the season so far. Jack Black delivered.

There were three "audience participation" parts.  The first and last ones were definitely "play".  The middle one was likely "shit" because it's been censored from the video, and Ego says "We're gonna get fined for that".

I was answering a question about the "such reaction"one that viewing audience couldn't hear.

Maybe "censored" for us delicates who never see the show LIVE.

Obviously the sketch was based on The Dating Game, which reminded me of a movie I just saw (Netflix?) called 'Woman of the Hour.' It was based  on a true story about a serial killer in the 60's who was a contestant (being picked) on The Dating Game. I was disappointed in the movie.

Those were excellent prosthetics. Even bouncing around, the seam never showed.

I think they were NOT prosthetic...but REAL!  The skit where she was wearing a white dress looked like she didn't wear a bra ... but needed NO "prosthetics."

I saw a picture on Reddit from Sarah Sherman's social media of Heidi Gardner in the make up chair getting the prosthetics installed.

I saw it on peacock.  Peacock usually has the uncensored stuff.  They do that for the Real Housewives shows too.
