Same here. He annoyed me all the way through, though. At one point I yelled at him, “stop PERFORMING and start PLAYING!” If he had spent less time auditioning for (whatever), I think he would have done much better.

Do you think they would have accepted my answer of just “eggs”? I hate French Vanilla; the yolks make it taste funky and who wants yellow ice cream anyway.

I thought that was fair. “Boise, Idaho” is a capital. Obviously they were looking for just the city name, but the clue did not specify that, so giving the full place name fit the clue as presented.

”Banana Pudding” made me miss Souper Salad. I don’t know if it existed outside my region, but it was a buffet-style restaurant that consisted of a giant salad bar (and a couple of soup options). At the end of the salad bar were a few desserts, one of which was always banana pudding with vanilla wafers. Probably from a can, and nothing special, really, but it was childhood nostalgia-style delicious. They went out of business during Covid, like all the other self-serve restaurants with only a sneeze guard standing between you and crippling disease, and I haven’t had banana pudding since. Probably for the best, but still.

That’s what confirmed it for me. I’ve never read the book (and wouldn’t have expected them to have personal manservants), but the fact that there were three of them led me to think Musketeers. And then Ken’s full-on French pronunciation removed all doubt.

I rarely dislike contestants but Brian was over the top.

I'd hope not, but it should have yielded a BMS prompt which would have led most responding that way to narrowing it down to egg yolks.

No, Boise is a capital; a "state capital" is a city, which is what the clue sought.  "Boise, Idaho" is a capital, state compound answer which is virtually never sought -- there's no need to specify just the city in order to make clear the city is the proper response, because the city is the logical response.  Add in that the clue specified the correct response was the only U.S. state capital - in other words, city - to fit the category of 5, 5, making clear the city had to be two words, five letters each, I'd maybe entertain her response for two seconds of deliberation before kicking it to the curb, but, as written, nope.

Well, Boise, Idaho is the only other capital that does fit the “5,5” category. I think the writers just didn’t think of that interpretation when they wrote the clue, but it is correct as to what was written. I think it’s fair they gave her the money.

Just a heads up - my local station is preempting J! this evening for some reason, but there's a high-quality recording currently available on a popular video sharing site.  (Not sure how long those stay available - if you plan to catch it, check sooner rather than later.)

Reposting in this thread - not sure if everyone reads the Media thread.

CBS and/or Paramount+ in Rochester NY (and perhaps elsewhere?) will be airing Jeopardy! at 2:30 a.m.

Yesterday evening I fell asleep watching Jeopardy!.
When I woke up, I went to the j-archive.com page for the episode, and started following the little white numbers in order, since I couldn't remember how much I'd missed.
I liked following it in the players' order better than the old-style, top-down, one-category-at-a-time way, but that's probably because it turned out that I didn't fall asleep until near the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round.
And it didn't hurt that FJ was a gimmee.

But I'm going to look for a YouTube version for tonight's first.

I didn't mind yesterday's player Brian Frey's traits that could be objectively categorized as annoying. I just enjoyed his wardrobe choices.

_______________________

I'm back.
The 2 YouTube videos I found were choppy, so I went to the archive and followed the little white numbers.
I did much better than usual, because finding the numbers takes my mind back to the game from its inevitable ramblings about interesting clues.

The only TSs I got were Big Bear Lake and Lourdes.

And FJ was my second instaget of the week.
IEIYKI.

But I do feel like I'm missing out on the human interaction parts.

Since the show will obviously be preempted tonight, I checked the archive earlier today, before my nerves were too shot.

The withholding TS surprised me.

I dreaded the canonized category, but only missed two (and they were both TS, so I was in good company). The only other clues I missed in the first round were 1000 in games and Eli Lilly in memoir.

I wasn't thrilled with the Mary category in DJ, but wound up getting them all - giving myself credit for locket, since I feel confident I'd have got that one had I seen the picture.  I also ran taxing and essays.  I got all but Whitehorse in animals and all but dragoon in "oon".  The category I should have dreaded was movies; I've never seen any of them, or even heard of some of them, so the only one I came up with was Elf.

FJ was an instaget.

November 5:

73% / 66% / 70%

Didn't bother with trying to see if it was airing on another channel, just went straight to the Tube of You. Found two; the one I watched had a couple little glitches in the first round so I had to check the archive after to fill in a few clues, but was otherwise decent.

Decent first round, meh second, again. In J I ran Playing Games, missed one in Hyphenated Words, Canonized Shots, and Science, two in Theater, and three in Lawyers' Notes on My New Memoir. In DJ I missed one in Essays and Animals on the Map and two in everything else.

FJ was an instaget again!

TSes: (J had 4 (and I got all of 'em!); DJ had 4) I got Bananagrams, Lourdes, Richter, Father Damien, withholding, and Big Bear.

Such an easy FJ. I’ve never read the book or seen any film version of The Three Musketeers, but a clue giving three French names and asking who they are servants of in a Literature category? Had it correct before Ken had even spoken 5 words.

The mister got it right away with the 3 servants (didn't scan the names as French). I had to think a bit but I got it too.

We almost always watch the streaming versions. There is one streamer whose videos we like, they're pretty good, with some amusing stuff at the end, because for some reason they don't trim the video (not that I know how to do that). But Monday they didn't post one, and the one we watched wasn't very well done.

Brian amused me, as much for the fact that I kind of like over the top contestants (for their bravery, if nothing else), as for the fact I knew there'd be discussion of him in the forum.

I'm not particularly attached to Greg, although I like him well enough, but I am soooooo glad Brian didn't win on Monday.  I couldn't have taken another minute of him.

I eventually got to FJ, in time to write it down.  Like @ams1001, I was briefly distracted by the volcano and thought of "Krakatoa: East of Java", but that movie was way later, and that event was way earlier.  Fortunately, I was able to redirect my thinking.

That event was actually later than the Bounty mutiny.  I got that FJ instantly because I've always been fascinated by the British Navy of the Georgian and early Victorian period.  Still can't believe two contestants thought there was a volcano in Wales.  Unless, obviously, neither have any idea what How Green Was My Valley is about.

Side note: for decades I had a hang-up about the movie Mutiny on the Bounty because my father kept quoting a Charles Laughton line from it and it drove me crazy.  Turns out the line wasn't actually from MOTB, it was from Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd.

Instaget FJ for me.  I've read the book, though it was ages ago, and I've seen the movie with Richard Chamberlain and Michael York (I recommend this one!).  I don't remember the servants from the movie, though.

I never read the book but I've seen that movie at least a dozen times (fully second the recommendation, it's fabulous).  I don't remember the servants either but three French servants had to be The Three Musketeers.

I came down on the other side of that one. I thought it was an interpretation of the clue that the judges hadn’t anticipated, but could be justified.

I probably wouldn't have given it to her, but I'm not angry that the judges did.

Have to say... I think Greg may be one of my all-time-fave players. He's smart as a whip, mannerly, witty, and has the best smile! He also has no weird mannerisms (arms flailing about, buzzer killing, mumbling, swaying, etc.) that distract from his excellent playing. Something tells me that when he eventually loses ('cause it will happen one of these days - I just hope he racks up a tidy sum before that happens), he'll reach out to the winner with grace and humility.

p.s. I'm also on fire with FJ this week, @proserpina65!

Greg's been posting on https://thepopculturists.blogspot.com/  J recaps

Channel 4 in Detroit thoroughly borked last night's show. Cable guide showed Wheel and J on MeTv. Saw a couple minutes of Wheel, then the broadcast switched to the regularly scheduled MASH. After a few minutes,  J came on. "Oh good", I said.

5 minutes later, MASH. Switched back to J after FJ.

Not the first time they have screwed up.

November 6:

73% / 57% / 65%

In J I ran Compound Words, missed one in John Brown, Landmark, and Cherry, two in TV Shows and three in Also Found in the Bathroom. In DJ I missed three in Catch 22 and two in everything else. Had no clue for FJ. There goes my perfect week.

TSes: (J had 2 + the DD; DJ had 2) I got The Cherry Orchard (DD) and Big Ben.

Another archive game for me, but when I play via the archive, I do only give myself 30 seconds for FJ.  And I spent so much time waffling and overthinking the clue that I ran out of time.  The correct response was one of the countries I considered, but I didn't write it down.  Oh well.

However, I did get the TS of Big Ben, The Cherry Orchard, Shampoo, and hunger & thirst.

For some reason I said the Netherlands, but then changed to France at the last second.

I said the Netherlands because they had colonies all over although probably don't anymore.  Then I said Portugal for the same reason and then Spain.  Never got to France, most likely because I didn't remember any colonies off the coast of Africa.  I forgot about Reunion Island.

Ken did say something like "also known as Big Ben" so maybe they would have... (and then everyone on Facebook would be screaming that Big Ben is just the clock).

Well, I was saying to the tv that it was the bell, not the tower.  Although that was my answer.

I'll be watching football tonight - or just staring into the abyss as I pet my cat, whichever - so checked the archive.

The Michelango TS surprised me, but I'm not sure it should have -- I saw it while I was in Bruges, but I can't remember if I knew about it before then.

I missed two each in spinoffs (pretty good since The Colbert Report is the only one I watched) and scarlet, but I ran everything else in the first round.

I did very well in DJ; I missed two in rails, got all but McCarthy in writers (seeing the picture wouldn't have helped), and ran the rest.

FJ took a moment, but then came to me.

Good first round, terrible second. In J I ran TV Spinoffs and Starts with Z, missed one in Scarlet, and two in everything else. In DJ I missed one in Pure Bedlam, two in Off the Rails, and three in everything else.

Wasn't totally positive but I came up with FJ pretty quickly and decided not to second-guess.

TSes: (J had 3 + the DD; DJ had 5) I got Zuni and trundle bed.

I said prophylactic.  No worse than the other 2 wrong answers, LOL.

I got the missed clues of quotient, Paraguay, trundgle, Michelangelo and Chavez.

I got the entire category of bed right.

I would have done better in the Z category, but with the jumping I kept forgetting the category. Not sure I would have gotten Zuni (but definitely wouldn't have said Nez Perce), but certainly would have said Zechariah instead of Isaiah.

I almost said Teflon for FJ, but then noticed the "lifesaving" part of the clue, and switched to the correct response in plenty of time to write it down.  I guess the two guys didn't notice that?  Has styrofoam or WD-40 saved lives?

The only TS I got were Zuni, Cape Horn, and trundle bed.

Your question becomes my quest:

Yes, WD-40 has been used to save lives in some situations, such as when a bus driver removed a python from the undercarriage of his bus and when police removed a burglar from an air conditioning vent.

Yes, polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam, has saved lives in many ways, including:

Research and medicine: Polystyrene is used in many life-saving medical products, such as tissue culture trays, pipettes, roller bottles, and pharmaceutical containers.

Organ transplants: Polystyrene coolers are used to ship organs across the country.

Diagnostic and intervention programs: During the pandemic, polystyrene was used in petri dishes, test tubes, test kit containers, and syringes.

Hello, everyone. I have been absent from this board for few days because a) my local CBS affiliate apparently didn’t realize Halloween is over and pre-empted J! for two days, choosing instead to air some horror flick about a big evil pumpkin on an endless loop, and b) I was locked in my own bubble of solitude, forgoing TV for old school activities like crossword puzzles that have clear logic and actually make sense. More healing is required, but I am starting to peek out from under the blankets for limited periods.

I don’t really like to play archive Jeopardy, but I did check the FJ clues and can say that I would have gotten Dust Bowl but not France. I had no clue for today’s, either. (And thank you @Katy M for clarifying why WD-40 and styrofoam— especially styrofoam!!— might be considered life saving. I was mystified by those answers.)

Regarding Jeopardy pre-emptions, I read today that streaming is in the show’s future. Someone at a recent taping reported that Ken responded to a question about streaming the show by saying it was slated for sometime in 2025, most likely on Hulu or Amazon Prime. Now, that strikes me as a lot of detail for Ken to provide about something that hasn’t even been officially announced, so I’m skeptical that the comment was even made (or maybe I’m just overly cynical right now), but maybe? I would like it to be true.

I would like it to not be true unless they mean in addition to syndication, but I don't think that's a thing.

I did horribly tonight, so maybe I don't need to watch anyway.

I got FJ right.  i said Columbus first, but changed to Vespucci.

I got the missed clues of disposable camera, selenium and Korea.

I got the entire category of I sing wrong.

I was shocked that none of them got Korea, regardless of MASH.  In fact, thinking about it more than I probably should, I would have put it as a low Single J! question.

(And I thought the category title was odd - Historical 1950s?  As opposed to what, the Stupid 1950s?  The Pet-loving 1950s?  The 1950s nobody cares about?  Why not just The 1950s?)

Yeah, next-day streaming somewhere, great, but moving this show from broadcast to some damn streaming service, no.

There is so much food waste in this country, including food that is perfectly good but gets tossed because people regard those "best by" or "sell by" as "expiration" dates, that bratwurst clue was unconscionable.  It's not an expiration date to begin with, and, FFS, no, do not throw out food simply because that date has passed.

And "botched" is a pretty generous term for what the Baldwin prosecutor did.

The Korea TS surprised me.

I almost ran the entire first round, but I missed Isotopes in fans and Chesapeake in fiction.

To my great surprise, I only missed two in Ballet & Opera.  I missed another two each in words, which was disappointing as I normally kick ass in vocabulary categories (maybe I'll blame it on my anger at the expiration clue), and '50s.  I ran legal and body and got all but Kendrick Lamar in singers, so it was still a good DJ.

FJ took me about halfway through the music and I wasn't entirely sure, but didn't have a better guess, so lucked out.

First time since I started watching regularly
(in October 2020 when Mom passed and soon after Alex)
that I got a week of FJs.
2 out of the previous 3 weeks I had zeros.

Wednesday I also got the Beatitude TS of hunger & thirst, and Thursday's Hugo Chavez.

Kind of cool the underdog won 2 days in a row. Ken seemed to enjoy it too.

I really like Susan.

I laughed when I saw she was competing against Ross and Rachel.

Give me more medical questions! I got both TS of selenium and hematocrit. Did you know Brazil nuts are a good source of dietary selenium? My random fact of the day!

I was frustrated that we didn't clear the board. I blame Ross. He was too slow choosing the next clue. I liked his beard, though.

It didn’t even occur to me that it might be streaming only. I was assuming a next-day streaming option, like the broadcast and cable shows get. But this is syndication, so that might make things more complicated. Anyway, as I said, I’m not even sure the statement happened. Ken seems like too much of a good soldier to be all loose-lipped like that.

I was torn between Columbus and Vespucci for FJ, and time ran out before I made up my mind. Oh, well. I don’t really mind losing on days when I’m at least on the right track. It’s days when I have no f-ing idea that are frustrating to me.

Rachel reminds me of someone I know and can’t stand, so I kind of hope her stay is a short one.

She was bugging me and I had no idea what her talk-show-portion story was about.

Susan commented on the reddit recap thread and said "I wasn’t kidding; being on Jeopardy! was a dream come true. I was originally scheduled to tape in May, but I broke my ankle in April so I had to postpone." So now I feel all the more bad she lost.

There was another comment that someone named Phoebe won on Wheel of Fortune afterwards. 😄
