At one point I yelled at him, “stop PERFORMING and start PLAYING!” If he had spent less time auditioning for (whatever), I think he would have done much better. Do you think they would have accepted my answer of just “eggs”? I hate French Vanilla; the yolks make it taste funky and who wants yellow ice cream anyway. I thought that was fair. “Boise, Idaho” is a capital. Obviously they were looking for just the city name, but the clue did not specify that, so giving the full place name fit the clue as presented. ”Banana Pudding” made me miss Souper Salad. I don’t know if it existed outside my region, but it was a buffet-style restaurant that consisted of a giant salad bar (and a couple of soup options). At the end of the salad bar were a few desserts, one of which was always banana pudding with vanilla wafers. Probably from a can, and nothing special, really, but it was childhood nostalgia-style delicious. They went out of business during Covid, like all the other self-serve restaurants with only a sneeze guard standing between you and crippling disease, and I haven’t had banana pudding since. Probably for the best, but still. That’s what confirmed it for me. I’ve never read the book (and wouldn’t have expected them to have personal manservants), but the fact that there were three of them led me to think Musketeers. And then Ken’s full-on French pronunciation removed all doubt. I rarely dislike contestants but Brian was over the top. 3 Link to comment

No, Boise is a capital; a "state capital" is a city, which is what the clue sought. "Boise, Idaho" is a capital, state compound answer which is virtually never sought -- there's no need to specify just the city in order to make clear the city is the proper response, because the city is the logical response. Add in that the clue specified the correct response was the only U.S. state capital - in other words, city - to fit the category of 5, 5, making clear the city had to be two words, five letters each, I'd maybe entertain her response for two seconds of deliberation before kicking it to the curb, but, as written, nope. 2 Link to comment

I think the writers just didn’t think of that interpretation when they wrote the clue, but it is correct as to what was written. I think it’s fair they gave her the money. 4 Link to comment

shapeshifter November 5 Share November 5 (edited) CBS and/or Paramount+ in Rochester NY (and perhaps elsewhere?) will be airing Jeopardy! at 2:30 a.m. Yesterday evening I fell asleep watching Jeopardy!. When I woke up, I went to the j-archive.com page for the episode, and started following the little white numbers in order, since I couldn't remember how much I'd missed. I liked following it in the players' order better than the old-style, top-down, one-category-at-a-time way, but that's probably because it turned out that I didn't fall asleep until near the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round. And it didn't hurt that FJ was a gimmee. But I'm going to look for a YouTube version for tonight's first. I didn't mind yesterday's player Brian Frey's traits that could be objectively categorized as annoying. I just enjoyed his wardrobe choices. _______________________ I'm back. The 2 YouTube videos I found were choppy, so I went to the archive and followed the little white numbers. I did much better than usual, because finding the numbers takes my mind back to the game from its inevitable ramblings about interesting clues. The only TSs I got were Big Bear Lake and Lourdes. And FJ was my second instaget of the week. IEIYKI. But I do feel like I'm missing out on the human interaction parts. Edited November 6 by shapeshifter 2 Link to comment
Bastet November 6 Share November 6 Since the show will obviously be preempted tonight, I checked the archive earlier today, before my nerves were too shot. The withholding TS surprised me. I dreaded the canonized category, but only missed two (and they were both TS, so I was in good company). The only other clues I missed in the first round were 1000 in games and Eli Lilly in memoir. I wasn't thrilled with the Mary category in DJ, but wound up getting them all - giving myself credit for locket, since I feel confident I'd have got that one had I seen the picture. I also ran taxing and essays. I got all but Whitehorse in animals and all but dragoon in "oon". The category I should have dreaded was movies; I've never seen any of them, or even heard of some of them, so the only one I came up with was Elf. FJ was an instaget. 2 Link to comment

Your question becomes my quest: Yes, WD-40 has been used to save lives in some situations, such as when a bus driver removed a python from the undercarriage of his bus and when police removed a burglar from an air conditioning vent. Yes, polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam, has saved lives in many ways, including: Research and medicine: Polystyrene is used in many life-saving medical products, such as tissue culture trays, pipettes, roller bottles, and pharmaceutical containers. Organ transplants: Polystyrene coolers are used to ship organs across the country. Diagnostic and intervention programs: During the pandemic, polystyrene was used in petri dishes, test tubes, test kit containers, and syringes. 4 1 5 Link to comment

30 Helens November 8 Share November 8 Hello, everyone. I have been absent from this board for few days because a) my local CBS affiliate apparently didn’t realize Halloween is over and pre-empted J! for two days, choosing instead to air some horror flick about a big evil pumpkin on an endless loop, and b) I was locked in my own bubble of solitude, forgoing TV for old school activities like crossword puzzles that have clear logic and actually make sense. More healing is required, but I am starting to peek out from under the blankets for limited periods. I don’t really like to play archive Jeopardy, but I did check the FJ clues and can say that I would have gotten Dust Bowl but not France. I had no clue for today’s, either. (And thank you @Katy M for clarifying why WD-40 and styrofoam— especially styrofoam!!— might be considered life saving. I was mystified by those answers.) Regarding Jeopardy pre-emptions, I read today that streaming is in the show’s future. Someone at a recent taping reported that Ken responded to a question about streaming the show by saying it was slated for sometime in 2025, most likely on Hulu or Amazon Prime. Now, that strikes me as a lot of detail for Ken to provide about something that hasn’t even been officially announced, so I’m skeptical that the comment was even made (or maybe I’m just overly cynical right now), but maybe? I would like it to be true. 5 2 1 Link to comment

There is so much food waste in this country, including food that is perfectly good but gets tossed because people regard those "best by" or "sell by" as "expiration" dates, that bratwurst clue was unconscionable. It's not an expiration date to begin with, and, FFS, no, do not throw out food simply because that date has passed. And "botched" is a pretty generous term for what the Baldwin prosecutor did. The Korea TS surprised me. I almost ran the entire first round, but I missed Isotopes in fans and Chesapeake in fiction. To my great surprise, I only missed two in Ballet & Opera.
