Season 41 Final Jeopardy Contest

Recommended Posts

Got 1 which happened to be an *.  First ever cruise I went on stopped at Bergen, Norway where Grieg's home was.  Somehow, I never forgot that even though I was too sick with a cold to go on the planned excursion there.  I will blame the rest of the week on frozen brain cells from the cold snap - although I did get Lecarre but not Fleming (both were among Father Grundoon's favorite authors, but I am more familiar with the former than the latter).

I'm annoyed that I didn't get LeCarre. I've read his stuff (some of it! there's a lot!) and I really should have thought of him.

I bring carrots

P.S. my monthly book club meets later today and we never have wine! Everybody seems very serious about talking about the book! And now I'm wondering if we're all just nerd anomalies, oe what!?

0/5. At least I'm not the only one! On Monday, got as far as nuclear sub, but couldn't think of the name, like others here. It was a true SMH moment upon seeing the answer. Got Fleming on Wednesday, but couldn't come up with LeCarre. So, a half-point?

Not a good week 😩

Sadly, halves don't count.

Idle curiosity - how many participants do we have in the FJ "contest"?  Because, y'know, some of the food y'all bring - EVERYBODY's gonna want to be at the table. Just how big a table do we need?

We are rocking this week - so far a third of us are zippos.

I think it's 24.

Very good! I'd give you a point, but that wouldn't be fair. ;)

(Unless “what is the first nuclear submarine” counts, but I suspect not.)

You suspect correctly. If that was allowed, I'd have to sort through a lot of answers that were very nearly there (or there, but not the verbiage they want). Which is kind of my specialty - the legitimate, but not what they're looking for answer.

I could do the same, but are the clues and answers a bit harder during the tournaments? There are a lot of Zeros these last 2 weeks:

I got to attend my mom's book club with her one time, and it was very focused on the book. It probably helped that my mom was head of it at that time and made sure the local library had several copies each month purchased with the book club's dues.

Whelp, apparently I am exactly as smart as a TOC contestant. At least in FJ!  I got the one FJ that was a triple get, and missed the 4 that were triple stumpers. I even got about as close as that one guy did to “Annus horribilis“, although I got it wrong in a slightly different way. (I settled on annus horrible. I think my high school French and high school Latin were battling it out .)

So, 1/5, no *.

Week 21 • January 27 - 2025 Tournament of Champions quarterfinals – Four Asterisks (!)
101.     *WORLD CAPITALS - Home to more than 400,000, it's the only world capital in the "Roaring Forties" latitudes (Wellington, New Zealand)
102.     *PALINDROMIC DATES - This 7-digit date saw the premiere of Handel's "Water Music" (7/17/1717)
103.     ENGLISH LITERATURE - Part II of this 17th century work says, "I see myself now at the end of my journey; my toilsome days are ended" (The Pilgrim’s Progress)
104.     *LATIN PHRASES - After Camillagate, a fire at Windsor castle & marriage problems in her family, Queen Elizabeth II dubbed 1992 this (annus horribilus)
105.    *U.S. PLACE NAMES - Before 1867, this city that lends its name to a type of tree was known as Novo Arkhangelsk (Sitka)

1/5 and one * for me this week. Almost a weekus horribilus.

Either my reading comprehension is getting worse or that's 1/5 not 4/5.

2/5 and 2*

Wellington was a guess (been there + I love geography) as was 7171717 (I'm a numbers person) so I feel just a tad guilty as I didn't "know" the answers.

I do remember the Queen talking about her horrible annus 😇... and I also remember giggling with my Dad about Latin jokes - his favourite verb conjugation was po: po, pis, pit, pimus pistus pants. No, that isn't real latin - but my Dad's sense of humour was legendary. I'm just so grateful he isn't here anymore to witness what's happening in our world.

Next time, bring a bottle. You’ll be a hero. 😉

That's a delicious looking set of zeros.

1/5* - annus horribilis was an instaget for me. I'd had low hopes for a category about Latin, but here we are.

Me too, we've since used it during our own annus horribilis. Which, thank goodness, is a few years in the past now.

Oh, and if something goes horrifically wrong with the forum update on Monday and I can no longer access the forums, I just want to say I'll miss you all.

I'm here, but that may be because I actually never logout of the forums, so no need to login? But I figured the "update" might have forced a "cookies removed. you must login to reauthenticate your account" situation.

1/5 with one *.  So many of the others made sense when I saw them but the only one I got was "annus horribilis" (as long as you are generous with spelling).

Father Grundoon had more of a Latin education than I did but his favorite "Latin" aphorism was not a real translation.  Illegitimi non carborundum (don't let those not born within wedlock grind you down) has gotten me through some dark days.

Hope you're still here. I've already forgotten how the login went for me.
