The U.S. apparently didn't have better options. There was a bar specialist in the running, but she fell at trials. From what I saw from fan comments, it doesn't sound like she was good enough to be a lock for a medal anyway. As it is, the U.S. qualified the maximum number of finalists in each WAG event. It seems like the US realized no individual really gave them a better shot at a medal so they gave the spot to 5th place AA. Also, Jade wasn't at 100% at trials so she definitely wasn't a lock for floor or vault.

I’m certainly not an expert, but the bars specialist is Riley McCluster. I remember Tim and Nadia saying that she had a really good shot at making the team as a specialist before she fell. But they weren’t speaking in terms of her being a lock for a medal or anything.

it’s kind of crazy that MyKayla Skinner’s Olympics are over. I don’t follow her closely but from what I’ve read she just seems to be a messy person in general. Simone seems to really like her, though.

ETA: Also, I think I’ve figured out the coverage. If you watch on Peacock live, you get NBC coverage with Bridget Sloan and John what’s his name as commentators. If you watch on the NBC app, it’s pool coverage with the pool announcers. If you choose the four apparatus view or the Team USA tracker on the NBC app, you don’t get any commentary. I imagine the primetime coverage with the A-team announcers is probably similar to the Peacock live coverage.

Well, at least Skinner was two-per-countried on vault.  No medals for you, boo.  Nice going, Forster; as we all knew, it was totally redundant to send Skinner since she's a less good Jade.

I think it's wonderful her Olympics are over!  And the conspiracy theorist in me would say she is so focused on being in the media in some capacity all of the time that she decided to put all her racist beliefs aside to suck up to the GOAT and ingratiate herself with her so that she could be next to her in as many photographs as possible.

That was...rough for the US ladies (mostly Jordan, who must dealing with a lot emotionally, given her Mom's incarceration).  I hope they can clean it up for finals.

I can’t figure out MyKayla. If you go just by her social media and things she’s said in the press, she should totally be persona non grata on this team. But, if you look at Simone’s IG (she’s the only one I follow), they seem like total BFFs. Maybe she’s one of those people that are different in a smaller group. Or, if I want to go totally conspiracy theory, maybe it’s her mom who likes all the controversial tweets, because she seems like the mom who would run her daughter’s social media. (I’ll take the tin foil hat off now. 😂😂)

Apparently Mykayla likes everything that mentions her. She should know by now it gets her in trouble. I really don't think Jordan would care all that much. She was smiling and dancing in the last youtube video I saw from Mykayla. They seem fine with eachother. Both Jordan and Mykayla looked dour at points last night most likely because the meet wasn't going the way they wanted it to. We haven't seen Jordan on camera since Mykalya started liking tweets that she deserved Jordan's spot.

Jade wasn't 100% at trials because she didn't need to be. She had her spot locked up so it made sense to do less difficulty.

Yes, but that doesn't change my point that the US couldn't know she would be 100% by the Olympics. That was clearly the plan, but it's still hard to predict where someone will be in their recovery.

I also wondered about this. Doesn't it make more sense to send a bars specialist considering all the aches and pains on bars? Gabby and Madison were both sent to the Olympics based on the strength of their bars. Now Mykayla the supposed specialist is done without qualifying for an event final.

Also someone needs to tell Mykayla AGAIN to cool it on social media. She's liking tweets about how she should have been on the team over Jordan. I don't know if she just doesn't read everything she gives a like to, but it's a bad look.

We have Suni who is an all around gymnast, but strength is bars. Riley fell at trials her only event and probably wouldn't have medaled. Morgan Hurd is injured and didn't even make trails.

I disagree. I don't think the USA would have put Jade on the regular team even if she was third in the all around at trials. Tom (The person who is in Martha's position) does not understand the World Cup Process at all and has shown that for the last three years.

They're very different people but they've been elites so long and have probably known each other since they were little kids. You're bound to have some sort of bond with someone like that.

I mean, they're two of the people who know what it was like at the Karolyi ranch. The others are all maybe too young to really know.

I wasn't saying she would be on the regular team. I was saying that it wasn't quite as clear Mykayla would be completely redundant. If Jade wasn't 100%, Mykayla could have edged her out for floor or vault finals.

Fair. I think USA Gymnastics wanted to screw Jade over since she didn't play by there rules.

Check my fixed post. I said that Myk is a very conservative Mormon so her views reflect that but why do people hate her THAT much? It seems over the top and a bit sexist.

i’m sure someone with greater knowledge will explain, but this is my understanding, which I just learned a few weeks ago. When Gabby made the team in 2016, a lot of Mikayla’s supporters thought that she took Mikayla’ s place. As I understand it, some of them posted some pretty racist things, which Myk liked. One of the big things was someone edited a photo of the gymnastics team and overlayed a photo of Myk over Gabby. And Myk liked it. I can understand her disappointment, but it just seems kind of tacky.

I don’t know if she ever apologized for any of it. And maybe there’s some more stuff that I don’t know about, but there are pockets of people who definitely don’t like her.

Simone's vibe is very off. Can't put my finger on it but her landings are wild and her body language very sullen.

But does Skinner drown puppies? Saw a bunch of people on twitter last night cheering her getting 2pc'ed. I don't get it.  What's there to hate THAT much?

Skinner has used the N word publicly. Both in writing and on video; examples can be readily found online.   As noted above, she liked Twitter posts that had photoshopped her head onto Gabby's body in team photos.  She also retweeted a post complaining about Gabby Douglas making the team in 2016 which used multiple monkey emojis.  Yes, she was just a teen when she did these things, but they're pretty egregious, IMO.

MyKayla and her husband have also publicly flaunted COVID protocols and there are lots of photos of her attending various events without a mask and not maintaining social distance over the past year and a half.

Here's a Reddit post that sums up a lot of what people find distasteful about her.  The author is also a big gymnastics fan and isn't impressed with her skills there, either.  As others have said, her performances often look sloppy compared to other top gymnasts.

Ok I'm not going to break the "no politics" rule but I don't follow gymnasts on social media because I've learned the hard way that most of them have views and opinions very different from mine.

I read the Myk post on reddit but I don't think it makes her worse than, say, Brody Malone or some legendary beloved gymnasts who I also unfortunately looked up on SM. She was a poor sport about the 2016 Trials and a covidiot but some of the OTT hatred towards her I think is sexist, considering on the MAG side there's a gymnast whose views are more extreme.

She has. This was covered in Golden, the Peacock documentary following her and a few other gymnasts trying to make it to the Olympics. It's worth a watch.

MyKayla is not my favorite. I don't blame anyone for not liking her or things she has said or done. That said, her teammates seem to like her which speaks volumes more than stupidly liking some tweets. Again, it's fine if people aren't fans (I'm not really) but some of the glee at her pain feels unnecessary.

Well, that was more exciting than I expected. From my non-expert view, it was clear that the US women had a lot of blips on floor. Very few clean sticks and Suni landed a pass in a tucked position. And some messy wolf turns all around. I was so excited to see Simone keep the triple double in bounds, and then she absolutely flew off the entire apparatus on pass 3! Eesh.

Jade's composure was amazing. I was also very impressed with Suni and Simone for going out on beam with nerves of steel after Jordan's fall. Suni seemed to be nervous the first two rotations but once she hit her bars routine you could almost see the weight come off her shoulders. Grace was shaky on beam but he delivered very well on the other three apparatuses, which ended up mattering. Jordan having an unexpected mental meltdown is exactly what Grace is on that team.

So...what would you guys do for team finals, given how today went? I'd probably put Grace on bars. Beam is trickier because Jordan was a disaster but while Grace didn't come off the beam, she also didn't nail it.

Very happy that Suni secured the second AA spot. Jade absolutely deserves the event finals she qualified for. She was essentially perfect on floor and vault.

Have Simone and Grace do AA, Jordan vault and floor, Suni bars/beam.

She issued the standard, “I’m sorry if I offended anyone” non-apology. Then in Golden she said she wished she could apologize as thought she wasn’t talking to a camera crew where she could actually apologize.

Don’t forget the racist tweets. It speaks volumes that she was a poor sport about Gabby making it and not Madison. An attitude which she continued to express five years later on Golden.

Having said that, I do feel some sympathy for her since her mother admitted on Golden that she forced MyKayla to continue gymnastics. It was clear MyKayla really didn’t like the sport was determined to make the olympics after committing so much time to the sport.

There's a lot of overbearing helicopter parents in gymnastics.

Yes, I know. I would say that in this case it goes beyond overbearing parenting into borderline abuse. That’s the only way I can describe forcing a child to participate in a sport that requires constant pain. That is, unfortunately, also not unusual for the sport.

It was still disturbing how openly MyKayla’s mother admitted to it. MyKayla had quit and then her mother forced her to go back after Carly Patterson won the all-around. I have a lot of problems with MyKayla’s behavior but it was still sad how many times she said that she hated gymnastics.

I was actually surprised how stunted MyKayla seems. It's like her life is gymnastics, gymnastics, gymnastics. Despite her age (24) in the documentary she presented as a teenager whose life was in the gym.

My biggest issue with Skinner besides the racism stuff is that she plays the victim. It's always someone elses fault why she didn't score high it was the same when she competed at Utah. If I can see you have form issues than I'm sure the judges can too!

Actually if we can see the form issues, you know you have issues LOL

Yep. It's bad enough she's shown her racism on multiple occasions. She is just not someone I can root for and I'm not sad we won't see her again.

Simone just totally flew completely off the mat. I'm glad she didn't injure herself.
