S06.E06: Bishop's Gambit

So Bishop created Cylons. This planet must be the original Kobol.

I love how annoyed Con is by everyone squatting.

They’ve done a solid job of showing that Ava should be the ship’s Science Officer but not the leader. When Sara returns make her the Spock please show.

I’m impressed that Sara fooled Bishop. And then kicked his ass for Rory.

I liked Rory and Kayla working together. I’m surprised they waited so long to hook up.

Interesting that Spooner can speak to the alien. It should come in handy.

So Sara’s a Cylon now too. You still have scars on the inside if it helps. And watch Battlestar Galactica to help you get through your new reality. The Cylons were always themselves no matter how many times they downloaded.

If this isn't reversed, I'm done with this show. I don't care if Cloned or whatever the new Sara is has all of Sara's memories. Our Sara is dead. And just like before she's alone and away from all her friends. All I can think about is Sara talking to Snart about how lonely death is. It's beyond sad. And Legends fans are happy for Ava angst? As if Sara didn't actually die. I hate this show. And to kill Sara for real in pride mouth?

I haven't watched the episode or any since the 2nd episode of the season so I guess I was done already.

That was a jaw-dropping moment for me. Literally.

I think it was great and I love Sara. There was a very clear reference point earlier made about Bishop as a clone that your brain, your memories who you are is transferred so Sara is still Sara.

I think this going to give Caity Lotz some great material to work with the rest of the season and she will knock it out the park.

And being the legends, they might undo it... but if they do, the journey before then will be great in terms of the character stuff/acting for Sara/Caity.

I'm really enjoying this season so far a lot!

I'm really hoping Bishop isn't the official Big Bad. I know that being annoying is a good trait for a villain, but . . . I can't. Especially with the man bun. Basically, he's "What If Vandal Savage Lived To The Age Where Man Buns Were a Thing?"

Man, identity crises are a huge thing in the Arrowverse these days. I'm hoping that Bishop is full of it abut Sara dying. I'm not upset about Sara in a clone body if that is really Sara's personality. I've just had this thing liking how Sara is too awesome to die and stay dead.

I can do without the mostly submissive Avas. I'm dreading that Bishop would "trigger" "our" Ava into going to his side.

Gary is still Gary, which means he's still annoying as fuck. Bright side: no man bun. If anyone remotely involved in Legends is reading this, this isn't me trying to make Gary-With-Main-Bun happen!

Of course Mick and the alien would have a makeout session. It was telegraphed too well. The bit with the tentacle slamming on the side of the pod? That was a nice touch.

Tonight wasn't as good as last week's fairy tale gone wrong, but it was a decent episode.

ETA: Forgot to apologize for the consecutive use of quotation marks.

Yes.

But we know that it's more complicated than that. Sara is the reason we know this.

So, not only is the real Sara dead as far as I'm concerned, but they want us to believe everything she went through with the Lazarus Pit was pointless. They weren't content with killing her, they've had to systematically tear down, give away to Ava, erase or contradict every part of her life, too.

Frankly, even if they do undo it, I'm just so tired of the Sara torture porn season after season, especially because the writers and the group of fans they listen to act as though she's being allowed to be happy. I've watched shows where characters are put through hell, but no one pretends otherwise. It's been made a joke, but how many times do I have to watch Sara be killed? And it's never quick or painless or even heroic and meaningful. How much does she have to be made to suffer on this supposedly fun and wacky, light-hearted show? And to constantly see PK say, "We don't want fans to worry, we wouldn't torture [Ava and] Sara," through all of it. I hate to think of what he considers torture if nothing's qualified so far.

I think I’m there too with the show being over for me.  I feel a little sick.  If I didn’t think this wasn’t all just being done to service Avalance, I might be willing to wait and see, but as @Screamnastics said:

They’ve made every single thing in Sara’s life revolve around Ava now, even going to the extent of making her a clone now, just like Ava.  I just....no.   I can’t.   😭

Sara dying before, the Lazarus Pit  happened on a different show so I'm not sure why that's being put on these writers. Sara hasn't died before on LOT. And she isn't tortured, put through pain, agony, etc , more than other legends. She was blinded, but it gave her special powers, she could still kick ass and she got her sight back.

John has lost his magic. Zari 1.0 died. Etc. The others get their asses kicked all the time. And they go through pain, and loss, and heartbreak. That is this show. Sara isn't the only one. This plot she's experiencing now isn't ALL about Ava. It's ALL about Sara. Sara was specifically chosen because she is Sara Lance and totally and completely awesome.

And Sara being a clone now--if it stays that way--will now make the clone story not just about Ava. Instead it becomes about Sara too. No more Ava complaining, oh, poor me, I'm just a clone. She's not special anymore in that way.

I just don't see Sara and her story being all about Ava. Last season it did lean into that territory and was frustrating, but I feel like there's been a course correction. Sara's story is about Sara.

It's not "putting" Sara's Arrow death on the Legends writers. It's a part of Sara's history, one that Legends loves to exploit whenever they want to call Sara broken or an animal, so they know it happened. You can't just willy nilly bring a person back from the dead with tech in this universe. It comes at a cost. This is well established. Tech can't transfer a soul, or retrieve it. Sara is dead, but the writers want us to think merely copying her consciousness into a cloned body is enough.

Sara has died before on LOT. More than the others, and in ways that weren't all "undone" via time travel. Usually more painfully, more graphically, more traumatically and more meaninglessly. This final time was particularly meaningless.

She's also had her mind and body violated so many times now I've lost count but it's probably more than all the other characters combined and if it's ever acknowledged on this show, it's for jokes.

John losing his magic isn't remotely comparable. Zari Tomaz isn't exactly dead, per se, but I have issues with the way she was treated, as well. And the fact she's treated as a separate entity from Zari Tarazi just reinforces why the suggestion this clone is Sara doesn't work.

Edit: On a side note, have there been any post-episode interviews? This is a huge revelation and there's been zero comment on Sara's side of "Sara's story" from producers this entire time and Caity was allowed to answer one (1) very basic question last week but you'd think now that the information is known we'd get something. The silence on Sara all season long has been defeaning.

So, the real Sara is dead and the one hanging with Bishop is a clone this entire time?  Yeah, I'm going to wait and see here.  This certainly wouldn't be the first time a Legend has been altered in some form, but it really doesn't feel right if original Sara is truly done for and it will technically be a clone going forward (even if it is one what has her memories and personality.)  But, again, nothing is certain on this show, so I'll see how this plays out.

I swear, I really don't want to hate here, but there was at least two times tonight where Ava allowed her emotions to effective her judgement and derailed a solid plan or pushed something too far and made things worse.  I just don't trust her as a leader at all and I don't think the rest of the Legends should either.  And now that she thinks that Sara is gone for good, I can only imagine this getting worse.  Really think Nate should be running things while Sara is away (never would have thought I'd think that before!)

Constantine is actually hiding his power loss from everyone: including Zari.  Yeah, that's not going to end well for him!

While a lot can be said about Mick actually banging an alien, I will instead focus on his nice little speech about how Sara is different from all of the other humans he usually deals with.  If nothing else, I do like the focus on the Sara/Mick bond (the last of the OGs!), and how Mick clearly respects and admires her in a way that I don't think he has with others (even with Snart, I think their bond was special, but still different from the way he respects Sara.)

Spooner can speak alien now?  Or only that particular species' language?

Gary slithering through a toilet is honestly not the weirdest thing he's been involved with...

She did jump to that kind of quickly.  A hostile alien says that Sara's dead?  Well, obviously it must be true - no need for evidence, time to turn on the waterworks.

And as for whether or not it's the real Sara running around now, that should be easy enough to verify.  We know people have souls in the Arrowverse, so just have Astra check to see if she's the real deal.

They really couldn't stand that Sara had something that made her more special than their presious Ava. So they took the one thing that made her special away, the fact that she was hard to kill. And unceremoniously killed her and made her a clone so she can be equals with Ava. Who knew that bouncing Sara off a dumpster was a more respectful death. Then just being replaced with a clone.

People are more than just their memories, our bodies tell the story of our lives too. Sara is dead. What we have now is a copy. How is this Sara not being victimized? She was killed and had her mind violated and put in a new body. What about her soul? Can this guy move souls around too. I'm sure they go with that so we can all move on to the more important storyline of the Avalance reunion and wedding.

No wonder Caity has been checked out this season and just seems to be trying to get directing experience. Her character means nothing to these writers so there is no point asking to have actual character centered stories for Sara.

I'm not holding my breath for them giving Sara something to work with here since Sara surviving looking at a God wasn't a storyline, Sara being blind wasn't a storyline, Sara having visions of the future wasn't a storyline. Why would this be Sara's storyline. Sara is just Ava's girlfriend so this will be about how Ava reacts to it and Sara will have to constantly make sure Ava's okay with it. They don't care to show Sara dealing with her traumas so they are not going to go deep with this. Sara's a clone like Ava, now they can live happily ever after.

So I'm going to go with at least real Sara isn't stuck spending the rest of her life with Ava. The pod person clone can do that and I can imagine my Sara being reunited with her sister, Oliver, Leonard and Stein in the afterlife. It's not an outcome I wanted but my Sara's basically been dead since S3 of this show

He's a clone and she's a clone and everywhere's a clone-clone... New clone Bishop has a lab... ee-eye-ee-eye-oh...

Ugh - I really don't know how I feel about this episode. At the ending, my immediate thought was that LoT has now really jumped the shark. After surviving so much, Sara's dead?! Now we only have her clone? Really? Why? To match Ava's clone?

Speaking of Ava, there were way too many Avas in this episode. And every Ava on Bishop's planet managed to wear an unflattering wig that made Jess Macallan look unattractive and much older.

Also, there was a lot of Spooner, who I'm having trouble liking as a character.

What did I like about this episode?  Hmmm... well, there was more Sara (albeit clone Sara) than the previous few episodes.

I guess the problem for me is that about half of the regular cast members are now ones I either don't care about (Mick, Astra, Spooner, Nate) or actively dislike (Ava, Ava, Ava), and some of them get a lot of screentime (Ava, Ava, Ava). The ones I still like - Sara, Zari, Constantine, Behrad - don't always get a lot of screentime in every episode (which is to be expected in an ensemble show), and some of them seem to be diminished in order to boost ones I don't care for (Sara for Ava, Constantine for Astra).

I suppose I could hope against hope that dead!Sara is the clone and the Sara we've been watching is still real!Sara, all part of a mindscrew on Bishop's part to make Sara more compliant. No?

The notion that he could clone Sara as much as he wants to raises a question as to why go through this much trouble with a clone IMO. He could just breed Sara clones and tinker with them to make them more willing to go along with...whatever he wants the Sara we've been watching to do.

I don't know if they've explained what that is and I've forgotten or they just haven't really explained. It seems so far just to be some sort of mentor for his Humanity 2.0 and to pal around with him.

Like why bother to kill Rory if this Sara is a clone. Just shove this clone somewhere outside (or for that matter, the dead!Sara) and whip up Sara 3.0.

How about the Legends use their time devices to rescue Sara?

Why was Mick able to breath the poisonous atmosphere with no problems? Is that because of some modification the Time Lords made when he was a transtemporal assassin for a few hundred years?

I really don't mean to turn every episode into me just complaining about Ava, but the show just keeps showing us over and over that Ava is a terrible captain despite giving us all of these stupid speeches telling us about how Ava is so awesome and the best leader ever, its getting really annoying. She is terrible at relating to people, she makes decisions based totally on her emotions even when it puts other people in danger, and her "plans" are half assed at best and not in a fun hijinks kind of way. I could have probably dealt with all of that if it felt like this was on purpose and this was part of an arc for her where she becomes a better leader or, even better, realizes that she isn't meant to be the captain and gives the position to Nate or Zari or anyone even remotely more suited to the job, but its not on purpose. The show just loves Ava so much now that its blind to her obvious flaws. They love Ava so much that they have now given us a billion Ava clones so that even when Ava isn't onscreen we can still have Ava, because the show just cant imagine Sara having a story without some version of Ava around. Also, while normally I think Jes does just fine, my problems with Ava are more in the writings than the performance, having all of these Ava clones is really showing her limits as an actress as opposed to the spotlight that I think its supposed to be. All of her clones basically seem like more smiley or submissive versions of regular Ava, just in terrible wigs, she aint exactly Tatiana Maslany in her ability to play a ton of different clones who are all different people. Especially when she is next to Tala Ashe, who really can make both version of Zari seem like totally different people just in body language.

Although I do sometimes question my belief that Ava is the shows favorite character, those wigs seem like some kind of personal insult. Its like they want to find wigs that are as unflattering on Jes as humanly possible.

Sara being a clone now...we're just going to have to see, I am reserving judgement for now. I think they might end up walking some of this back, especially if someone really notices the implications that the Sara we have known and loved for years is dead now, but if they do keep this as the new status quo, Sara being a clone of the original Sara, I am not going to be thrilled. It means that our Sara, the one who we have followed from her taking that fateful boat trip with Oliver up to now, died offscreen on this stupid planet far away from her family and friends, and even if we do get a new clone Sara who has Sara's personality and memories, it does mean that she is still dead, and that really freaking sucks. I know that Sara dying and coming back is a long running joke around the Arrowverse, but this really would be her death even if she isn't actually "gone" and I hate that as an ending for Sara. After all of that, she just dies offscreen in the service of a plot twist, and having a clone version of Sara around to replace her doesn't make it any better that our Sara died, alone and away from the people she loves, which is terribly depressing, especially for a show that has gone so far into wacky territory. Will they even realize what they did, or will they just buzz past it and decide that clone Sara is real Sara now and get onto the clone wedding, or will everyone mourn the loss of that Sara before they embrace this new Sara? Or will they save OG Sara while clone Sara sacrifices herself for OG Sara, the way the Legends from the Legion of Doom timeline died to bring the timeline back? I am somewhat sure that they will fix all of this via time travel hijinks, but if not I am not going to be thrilled, to put it mildly. Sara has always been stuck in this random side quest for way too long and has spent too much time being sidelined for Ava, the shows favorite character, so if they even end up killing her off to make her a clone, I am going to be seriously pissed.

There were some aspects of the episode that I liked, even if this one seemed like a let down after last weeks quality episode. This was one of the better Spooner episodes, even if I still find her a bit pointless as a character, the plot with Mick and the hot alien was fun, especially as it emphasizes the bond between Mick and Sara, and Constantine as the long suffering host to the Legends was pretty hilarious. He and Astra are great together, and his relationship with Zari continues to be one of the shows best romances they have going now. Him not telling anyone about his magic is going to be a disaster though. The actress playing Amelia was really good, she did a good job at not coming off as she is doing a bit as Amelia, while also being actually scary. Certainly more menacing and interesting than Bishop, who is just annoying, and not in the way I think its intended.

Best part of the episode was Mick saying Sara is different and that's why he's saving her. I hope we get a good reunion between them after clone!Sara finds out that he isn't dead.

There's just too many Avas this episode. I cringed the whole time Gary was saying how awesome his Ava was. Was that supposed to be a serious scene or a sarcastic one? And I think that Jes isn't suited for these historical looks.

So Sara died. Not a complete surprise since I guessed that the writers simply can't resist giving the shippers a clone wedding. Maybe all the other Avas will join them too. Plus, her death can serve as a catalyst for Ava's (wo)manpain. They couldn't spend much time the last 2 times (zombies, legends of to-meow-meow) Sara died, but they have at least an episode for that now.

The writers may try to reverse this, but I think there's a good chance Sara will remain dead and we are left with clone!Sara. I doubt we're going to see Sara deal with this (when have we seen Sara deal with anything on Legends?), as she is more likely going to spend all her time dealing with Ava's clone insecurity. Plus, what's there to be insecure about when Sara herself is a clone? They're complete equals now.

I can't see this storyline as anything but to serve Ava's story. Bishop and Sara have Ava in common, and both simply can't stop talking about her. The reason why Bishop wants Sara is weak, and is nothing but a lazy excuse to bring Ava into the story. The ending of this season is probably them freeing the Ava clones by defeating Bishop, bringing closure to Ava's insecurity in the process, and helping all the other Ava clones find their purpose in life. Sara is just a tool the writers use to achieve all that.

It's sad that Sara died alone, millions of miles away from people she loved. Just like she described to Snart in S1. And I also feel sad for Sara when I look at the new team. There's practically no one close to her left, other than Ava. Mick's going to be gone, Zari's Ava's friend, Nate is closer to Ava now, she doesn't know Spooner, barely knows Astra, barely talks to Behrad since last season's premiere, and Constantine is too busy with Zari. It feels so different from earlier seasons.

So when exactly is Sara supposed to have died?  Amelia Earhart says "I killed her".  When?  We certainly didn't see it.  She spit at her or infected her with some alien poison, is that supposed to have killed her?  When did she get cloned then?  Because we certainly saw an infected Sara leaving Earhart's shack.  The last time we saw Sara she had stumbled across Bishop's ship and he mysteriously introduced himself.  So she is supposed to have died offscreen and the first of Sara we saw this episode was already the clone?

WAY.  TOO.  MUCH.  AVA.  Now we have multiple Avas in all different wigs, is this going to continue for the rest of the season?  Because I just cannot tolerate it.  These producers truly don't know how to read the room.  Do they really think that Ava is a fan favourite?

I dislike this Bishop guy a lot... everything about him.  His stupid man bun, his terrible singing.  His singing isn't even a song that has any kind of melody.  It's just singsonging his words for some reason.

Cloning is nothing new to comics.  Back in the 80s, Professor X was transformed into a Brood.  The process couldn't be reversed but alien technology was able to create a new Clone body to transport his brain into.  I don't consider it much different than what happened to Sara.  It wouldn't have been my choice to do it and it annoys me because it all comes back to AVA AVA AVA.  It's been a huge mistake trying to make the show all about Ava, who proves once again she's a bad captain with terrible instincts and judgement.

Anyway, really liked this episode.  Bishop has been a good villain and I liked Sara pretending to join him.  This has been a great storyline for Mick, even if he was captured pretty easily.  I continue to like Spooner and John's storyline is also good.

Exactly. We know from whats been established in this universe. The soul is real and goes somewhere after death and you have to go get it back. Original Sara died, her soul went to wherever its supposed to go. The clone has a new body and a new soul, with the memories of being Sara Lance.

With Nate and Hank we’ve also seen the soul can sometimes hang around for a while after death watching things so it’s not clear to me it couldn’t still be there to jump in a new clone body given the opportunity.

But that would mean either the Avas have no souls or Sara's forced her clone's soul out of that body.

Yea, that's why I was going with Sara's clone body created a new soul. Because if the clone doesn't, then Ava doesn't have a soul. Because I'd also have to think that Bishop made many Sara clones, how would each of them get Sara's soul? Or does only one of them get it and how did it decide which one to go into?

That is why I can't see the clone as the same. It's a copy, the actual real Sara is dead. And that is why I'm upset. The Sara I've been following for 8 years died unceremoniously off screen and no one will mourn her because we have a copy that people just accept as the same person.

Do clones have souls? If they do, do they just magically enter the clones' bodies once Bishop activates them? What does that make Bishop, who not only made clones of Ava and Sara, but also himself?

Or clones don't start with souls, but normally achieve them over time.  Or the clone soul voluntarily left and returned from whence it came.  Or something else weirder.

How would it voluntarily leave? And why would it, where would it go? And I'm pretty sure Sara wouldn't ask another soul to leave so she can take the body. Sara was always willing to sacrifice herself and her happiness for others. That was a main part of her character. If they ruin that then they really did kill Sara.

I'm also pretty sure Bishop made more than one Sara clone. Are those Sara too? Or is only one somehow the real Sara, but the others are not.

That is the main reason the clone is not Sara to me. It's a copy of Sara's memories. Sara experienced her life, the clone only thinks it did. Real Sara also only had one brief conversation with Bishop before she died. The rest was experienced by the clone which again makes the clone a different person.

I agree. I'm assuming clone!Sara remembers her childhood, her time on the Amazo, in the League of Assassins, etc, but she did not actually live it, because this version of her was manufactured by Bishop just 24 hours ago. Having a copy of Sara's memories inserted into her mind does not make clone!Sara the real Sara.

And a person's memories and personality does not entirely make a person. If Bishop inserted Sara's memories into Ava clones or Bishop clones, they surely can't be considered the real Sara.

If they stick with the clone!Sara story (there's a theory online based on which hand Sara was wearing her rings that may mean the real Sara isn't dead), then to me, the real Sara is already dead.
