Both my sons, who are not twins, have the same middle name and it is my husband's middle name.  I love names and was not lazy when naming my second son.   I hated for him to not have his father's middle name too.  It's a beautiful name.  That is why I did it.

Goodluck to Katie.  I'm sure she has a lot of help with Jenny, Jordan and Josie around.  (And maybe Mckenzie.)

I'm sure she tried. But he's only 2 1/2.  It sure how successful she was. And the stress could cause Truett to regress.

Eh, my 1st was potty trained by age two. After talking about and having a potty chair, talking about big boy undies and watching me and his dad use the bathroom he was eager. I'm not kidding when I say he spent less than a month practicing at home and one day I said we're going to be gone all day with big boy undies on today, so make sure you tell mommy when you need to go. Not being a fool myself, we went to my moms house 😬. And that was it - he was trained. Oh and I was pregnant.

I know the norm now is training around 3 years old, but if the kid shows signs they're ready, go for it. And if, like Katey, you're going to have 4 under 3, one out of diapers makes life a wee bit easier.

My son and his wife gave both of their kids her maiden name as their middle name. She doesn’t go by her married name, and she wanted the kids to have a part of it.

Potty training is too divisive of a subject to get into. Every kid is different and there should be no rules and comparisons. I learned that pretty fast with the first kid many years ago. A little girl neighbor was already trained, and he wasn’t even close to it. Well, he didn’t get married in diapers, so I’ll call that a success.

Both of my nephew's sons have the same middle name.  It is a nice name, and it was their grandfather's first name and their father's middle name.

My husbands extremely large family has a tradition of giving everyone a middle name that starts with L. Eventually you run out of ideas so my middle child shares the same middle name as my husband. My oldest child goes by his middle name (which is something I swore I’d never do but I liked it better than the first name we picked for him). My youngest was easy because she was my only girl and I love Lucille Ball so she got Lucille as a middle name. My sister in law is obsessed with Star Trek so gave her daughter the middle name Lwaxana. lol!

Why would anyone name their little daughter Elsie? All I can think of is Elsie the Cow.  The other twin got the pretty name Emma Kate.

I don't think anyone under 30 knows Elsie the Cow.  After buyouts and bankruptcy, Borden is a shadow of its former self.  OTOH, they probably all know Elsie's hubby Elmer.

It's such a fuddy duddy name for a child. If they wanted another E name to go with Emma there are so many pretty names.

Too bad people under 30 have no knowledge of Elsie the Cow. Borden used to bring a  large cow to town in the spring. She would be set up by the Hilton Hotel in a covered breezeway. She had  her own gated and comfortable cow pasture. Kids loved going to see Elsie. She was as iconic as the Pillsbury doughboy and the Jolly Green Giant. What simple pleasures us old folks had back then.

I have a Gen X daughter and a Millennial daughter. I am going to have to quiz them and ask if they know the name of the cow on the Borden cheese products. I suspect the older daughter will. We would take her to see Elsie when she came to town back in the day.

Maybe they will name their next boy Elmer.  Won't that be special, Elsie and Elmer?

Well, ya know, names are personal.  I named my first born Nathan after my grandpa.  I heard so many comments about "eww, what a name for a baby, why did you do that to the poor fellow".  Seriously?  He is a grown up man now and still loves his name.  Never had a nickname.  Someone will always associate a name of someone else with someone they didn't like etc.  If that were the determining factor I guess we could put names out to the universe and wait for everyone to say "good" or "eww". And for those of you going "eww" over the name we chose for him, someone else is going "eww" for your name or what you named your children.  And so it goes.

Yeah, my kids are just under 40 and they would have no idea about Elsie the cow. I actually think it’s kind of a cute name. I’ve never been partial to Emma. I’ve always liked names that end in a Y or IE. I just think they sound sweet.

Names or nicknames?

Odd! I’ve known a bunch of Nathans and I’ve always really liked that name. ❤️

See?  Not everyone did/does/will.  And anyone on this forum that doesn't, well probably won't say.  Probably lots out there that don't like any one of our names or we don't like theirs!  Point is, very subjective and can't and shouldn't try to please everyone.

Elsie the cow is on the Elmer's glue label.  With small children, Katey should have Elmer's glue around for crafts.  Everyone needs Elmer's glue around.  I use it for everything!

Elmer the cow was Elsie's husband. If you google Elsie the Cow you will find out how she came about to be the iconic mascot for Borden. And there is a picture of how Elmer looked. Elsie is on Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk cans.  Bordens is also on the can.

If people like the name Elsie that's OK with me. To each his own. But I've been on this earth a long time and the only time that I have ever heard  the name Elsie is when it is  associated with  the cow and old ladies. Look up Mrs. Hughes from Downton Abbey. Not the actress but the character portrayed.  This is what I think Elsie looks like .

I never did nicknames with my kids. Two boys with very short first names, because we have a long last name (think Ukrainian). But there are some names that end that way that I like. Probably mostly girls, but it didn’t end up that way for me.

I haven’t ever heard of Elmer the cow! All those years with glue, and I guess I just didn’t associate it with the boy cow. Ha.

And yes, strongly agree. Many people hate names that other people love. That’s just the way it has always been. I remember having a terrible time picking names, because one or the other of us knew somebody with that name and didn’t like them. I remember being in love with a girl name, and the Mr. worked with a girl with that name who he strongly disliked. We are old now, so we just went through this naming our newly adopted dog. Unfortunately, she came with a name that I don’t really like, but she answers to it. Husband loves the name. what are you gonna do?

Congrats on the new pup!  Your story reminded me of the dog we had growing up.  He was a dobie/coonhound mix, and I always knew him as Major.  My dad and his friends would take him hunting.  It turned out that when they went to pick to pick him up, he was named Butch.  That was my dad's nickname his entire life.  He immediately told my mom the name needed to be changed, but she wanted to keep it since it allowed her to yell at my dad and the neighbors would think she was yelling at the dog.  Until the day he died, his name was Major.

I changed your post a bit, lol. 🙂

My sister was friends in the '60s with a girl named Elsie Jean.  That was her real first name (not a nickname) and Jean was her middle name.  No one ever called her just Elsie--it was always Elsie Jean.

Like Norma Jean? Jean is my middle name, btw. I’ve never loved it.

Thank you,Sixlets! We just lost our 16-year-old girl. I wanted another right away, but Mr. said he wasn’t sure if he wanted any more dogs. Well wouldn’t you know, she is absolutely glued to him! Follows him constantly, freaks out when he leaves, sits on his lap and practically sleeps there at night. I guess that’s his karma for daring to hint at not wanting to have another dog. Ha. And I’m the one who found her, did all the research on her and her breed, and we end up with her having practically hearts for eyes when she looks at daddy.

So on topic, is Fenna the only pet any of them have? It’s interesting with having so many children that they don’t want them to grow up with pets. We grew up with dogs. My kids had dogs. My son is married with three dogs and a cat (oh and two kids).

Sorry to interrupt, but Katey just posted that they found out that the twins are fraternal (different blood types).

Back to the regularly scheduled Elsie discussion. 😀

I think Katey was hoping they'd be identical,  because then she'd have given birth to not only the first set of girl twins in the Duggar family,  but also the first set of identical twins.

This is sad. This means that it's genetic and there's every chance she'll have another set down the road. These two will end up with a dozen kids under 10.

  • Mind Blown 3

I work with a set of twins and another coworker always calls them "the twins. I can't tell one from the other."  They look NOTHING alike, so I have to laugh at that.

I do hope Jed and Katey will let Elsie and Emma be two separate beings rather than assuming they are going to be alike.   I can't remember about Jed/Jer from the show.

Yes, I know Elsie and Emma will be raised to be sister moms like their aunts without the ability to do anything other than "girl stuff."
