Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

Once again, we have characters going on about how people will be hurt if Sonny goes to jail.  No one is hurt by a criminal going to prison.  LOL they lay it on thick about Sonny and his code.  That's an excuse for him to commit crimes.  Are they seriously thinking the audience will go along with this?

I agree the Sonny could run the empire from prison.  Maybe Cyrus thinks Drewfus will believe that?  The boss could always get out of jail, so the flunkies are not going to slack off on the job.

Michael suddenly cares about Sonny going to jail. Dante I bought his concern, not Michael suddenly caring.

The problem, I think, is that Duelly can't play more than one thing at a time, which sapped interest in the whole "Michael's vendetta against Dad" plot. When Michael is angry, he's just angry. A stronger actor could have done the anger as the top layer and other tones underneath it, so we would see he really still loved Sonny deep down, et cetera. Then what's going on presently would work better.

CD was similarly one-note when he turned on both Sonny and Carly after AJ's death, but that was a more entertaining story.

But certainly Carly has enough heart and courage to play ALL the positions! I believe I just heard that she’s one “wild” pitcher. And now I want to see one of these games, because I’m imagining Carly on the pitcher’s mound in a fitted silk jacket and high heels.

Carly in the world of sports has so much comedy potential. She'd probably cheat, get penalized, and try to turn the whole situation into a manhunt for the person who alerted the umpire/referee that she had cheated. Or else claim the umpire/referee was out to get her, and she wants to play the game over again with a different one. "I didn't benefit from that cheating! We lost the game anyway!"

Whatever this SL is with Sasha/Cody/Sam, it’s unwatchable. I have no desire to watch Sasha get tortured JK has been chewing the scenery during his last few episodes. It reminds me of soap clips that used to play on The Soup.

I like Dante and hate Michael but it’s episodes like this that prove why Dante really, really shouldn’t be a cop. I can’t root for him being angry at someone he thinks snitched on his mob boss daddy. His little speech yesterday about how he knows right from wrong but Sonny is a good guy was cringey and he was even worse today. He might as well admit he doesn’t care about the law when it’s someone he loves committing crimes because his actions prove it.

Though Michael’s gaslighting is equally annoying. The outrage that Dante could think he’d do that to his siblings. Like we’re supposed to forget that he had been plotting to turn Sonny in for months and flat out said he didn’t care if his siblings were upset when they found out.

I just can't with NuMolly.  Her instant attack on Kristina, when Kristina is the one having empathy for Molly while dealing with her father's arrest, the Me! Me! Me! (honorary Carly?) and that little girl voice, between that and the Sasha torture porn, this was a bad episode to get through.

It's nice to see Kristina and Nina supporting each other. It's obvious in terms of storyline but I wouldn't trust the show not to make it all about Carly and her kids again.

Michael: "I'm still not over what he did to Mom."  Seriously? She's the one who divorced him.

Michael: "I told Dante I had nothing to do with this."  LIAR.  You told Dex to make the video that they're using to nail Sonny.

He's not a good actor. But he's snagged a cushy job so I guess mediocrity does rise to the near top.

What exactly did Kristina do about the surrogacy thing that made nunuMolly and TJ so frustrated? Because as far as I can remember, all she did was mention surrogacy and being a possible surrogate to Sam and Alexis, and Molly overheard and flipped out because she wasn't up to hearing about surrogacy at that point in time. Am I missing something?

I’m glad Nina heard about the possible consequences of Sonny’s arrest from Alexis, who’s indifferent towards her, than Carly or one of her kids because I was definitely bracing for a scene where Carly uses the arrest as an excuse to explain why she’s so much more suited for this life and what it entails even though all she did was use Jason as a crutch or wait for him to save the day.

I don’t get why Sam is keeping what they’re doing from Dante. I doubt he’ll do more than mildly chastise her when the truth comes out. It’s an incredibly stupid plan which is only prolonging Sasha being tortured but i doubt Dante will speak out against it.

Im on the fence about this spy vs spy SL that they’ve got going on with Valentin/Anna. I don’t think it’s giving what they think it’s giving. It’s just another instance of Valentin lying to her and Anna going behind his back to find out the truth instead of telling him she knows he’s lying and withholding information. They’ve done this multiple times already with them.

Why wouldn't Sonny's guards continue to take care of his family? They work for money, not loyalty.

Alexis and Olivia, Sonny's baby mamas, talking to Nina was kind of hilarious.

The Cody actor really tried but why do I get the feeling that his lines were written by someone who never met someone in a manic stage. But the prison (why is he in prison) did give him a  haircut.

TJ to Molly: "[Kristina] doesn't know when to back off" he says to the woman who has no idea how to back off ever.

Way to tell Valentin that you suspect him, Anna. Super spy work there.

On screen, that's what we saw.

In the fanwank version, Molly has always been the the 'good girl' and resentful of all the attention that Kristina got for her screw-ups. But will all that doing what she is supposed to do, in contrast to Kristina doing wrong, it's Kristina who can have a baby and Molly herself cannot. So she sees every effort that Kristina makes to help her as Kristina lording over her that she can have babies while Molly can't. And TJ, poor mutt, dos nothing but agree with her.

I watched only the first half hour and this version of Molly is one unbearable bitch. They did a complete 180 with the character. She is unwatchable. You'd think Kristina told her that she would sell the baby to a satanic cult or something. Girlfriend is nuts.

So Sasha offers to pay off Dr. Evil, but he refuses because he's not in it for the money. Make it make sense! The whole reason Sasha is there and being drugged out of her mind is because he wants a payout. What difference does it make if it's Gladys or Sasha. It's not like his ass is ethical in the first place.

Michael is still an unbearable prick. Way to gaslight your brother and the audience. I like that the one scene where Willow might have grown a backbone when she accused Michael of turning Sonny in played out off screen. We can to them being all schmoopie schmoopie schmoopie like nothing even happened between them since it happened in the place where the good stuff seems to happen.

I really don't care about this whole Anna/Valentin/Pikeman storyline.

The other day, when Dante was at Ferncliff, did he see Sasha?  I remember him at the nurse's desk, showing his ID, and outside Sasha's room.

The channel I watch cuts in every time it rains, so maybe I missed something.

Same here.  If the goal was to make us forget that she's a 40 year old woman, by having her act like a petulant teenager, mission accomplished.

The level of anger that Molly has towards Kristina is not proportionate to the 'crime' that Kristina allegedly committed.

Also, she tells TJ that she can't think or worry about her sister, who's father was arrested on federal charges, because she's dealing with the surogacy right now. You're a woman, multi tasking is our thing.  Also they have to wait two weeks to get results anyway.  Guh what a bitch.

I don't think the arrest is from that drive, I think it's from the drive that Sonny planted for Betty to find.  The Carlys don't know about that drive, even though Dex does and didn't tell them.

I found it hilariouds that Cody told Olivia that he would be off for a week.  I guess he figured he would be in and out of Ferncliff in 7 days.  Like, how does he expect to get back out when he's currently jumping up and down the bed, screaming like a lunatic in front of the in house psychiatrist?  "Just kidding Doc,I'm all better now".  That's not how it works.

NuMolly looks like a young Lori Laughlin.

I’m surprised that Nina didn’t go to Diane or someone else about Sasha once she found out that the doctor was blackmailing Gladys and that she had a ton of gambling debt.

Also, does anyone think that Cody will get jabbed by the evil doc’s syringe?

If he gets paid by Sasha than the money train ends.  If he gets paid by Gladys he can continue to blackmail her for more money.  Also Sasha would go to the police whereas Gladys won't.

I can't stand to watch her either. I didn't see the original one but how they are writing this one is horrible. Her hatred of the very mention of Kristina borders on the psychotic. Not only that, but I really dislike how Alexis panders to Molly, coddles her, enables her treatment of Kristina, says "your problems with her are between the two of you," when actually they are Molly's, period, and I wish one time Alexis would call her on it. I saw on the preview that she is going to be screaming at Kristina again. Gee I wonder who Alexis' favorite is?

I liked Olivia's telling Nina that she needs to wise up if she wants to marry Sonny. I see Nina as "babe in the wood-like" and not suited to be the wife of a mob boss. If she was tough, she could tell Michael it's not up to him whether she sees Willow and Wiley, so he needs to get out of her way!

It does in the tiny, underfunded pocket universe in which PC resides.  Just like how their legal system isn’t based in our reality.

I am really seeing the Stepford vibes with Willow, having to look to Michael for approval of anyone's move, including Nina's. She should be able to allow her kid to go a few feet away without checking with "the man," who then mentions to her how much she is seeing Nina and if SHE is all right with it, meaning HE is not all right with it.

Who is this Warden Garten and what does she have going with Cyrus?

I know the woman who plays Maxie has gained a bit of weight, but I have not seen her yet without horribly heavy eye makeup and hair that looks unwashed. I think wardrobe could do better.

Sonny got arrested! Who's the rat?  I wanted someone to pop out of that box like a birthday cake!

Molly really is a bitch. It's not like she's doing anything except hanging around the hospital while all the work is being done by TJ and the surrogate. But she can't think about Kristina's situation because it's too hard on her.

Dear Olivia, not every Italian family in Bensonhurst was mobbed up.  In fact, many of them never even knew anyone in the mafia. At least not personally. I lived there for 30 years.  I had my suspicions but never knew for sure. And I certainly wasn’t going to ask.

Honestly, for someone who kept her son away from his father because said father was in the mob, she sure seems perfectly okay with it these days…

They’ve really done a number on Molly! I know many found her annoying but I liked HP’s Molly. She was ok with me. I had no major problems with her! I also liked Tolly.  Now, I can throw them both in the trash!!

Putting aside how difficult it is for me to suspend my disbelief when I look at nuMolly - they’ve made those changes even worse by also making the character a self-centered, hateful, obnoxious witch!! AND they’ve ruined TJ by making him equally as hateful and obnoxious as his wife! Since when did these two hate Kristina so much?!? All Kristina did was mention being their surrogate to Alexis and Sam, and they have been hating on her ever since!!! It’s insane!

Tolly has been ruined. Molly has been ruined. I loathe these characters now. I hope they’ve paid the surrogate, and she runs off with their money! I hope they ask Kristina to be their surrogate and she laughs in their faces and slams the door on them. I would be fine with them being the victims of mob violence at this point. I hate these characters. These rewrites have done them no favors!

——————

I also agree about CD’s acting skills. He’s not a strong actor at all. He brings no nuance or layers to his performances. He plays stuff as written. He also plays anger the same way, which is why I have never been a fan of these “Michael hates Sonny” stories. They just don’t work with Chad. It’s better when Michael is cool with Sonny, IMO.

Cody's story feels like Emmy bait for Josh Kelly.

Shut up, Molly. You're an obnoxious, selfish asshole.

Even though Dante was wrong, him accusing Michael of getting Sonny arrested was enjoyable. Michael's umbrage was a bit much, considering how vehemently he wanted to take Sonny down for so long. I also liked Kristina accusing him.

Is CD darkening his hair? I don't think it works.

Olivia, it's "omerTAH," with the stress on the final syllable. FFS.

Janice isn't much of a psych nurse if she can't tell when a patient has been sedated.

Im assuming that the PIkeman crates are not legit, that they have the logo but aren't the real deal.  They're either empty or full of Corinthos coffee.  Sonny plants info on his computer that Betty steals and puts on a drive.  She gives the drive to Austin who gives it to Cyrus.  It has fake info about fake delivery dates.  Cyrus is the one who called in the Feds with the info, which has been fabricated and they'll realize it when they open the  fake crates.

The crazy part is that the Carlys think Sonny got arrested because of the first drive, that showed him receiveing the very first PIkeman shipment even though Carly destroyed the drive.  Dex the idiot forgot to tell them about Sonny's plan to mess with Betty.

She's Italian! If she's going to throw make sweeping generalizations about how everyone in Bensonhurst was mobbed up, she should know the lingo. And it's a well-known enough term that she should pronounce it the Italian way. Plus, the way it's spelled-omertà—that accent tells you where the stress is. But that's me being super picky because I'm hating so much of what's going on.

I feel like we're all not getting the GH episodes where Kristina is nagging Molly to let her be her surrogate and "won't let it go."  Because the Kristina Molly and TJ are pissing and moaning about isn't the one that's playing out on our screens.  And, gee, YA THINK maybe you rushed into this, Molly? She literally got her endo diagnosis four months ago.  Honestly, they way they're writing these two I'm not going to feel the least bit bad when this blows up in their faces, because you know that surrogate isn't going to want to give the baby up.

Nice to see Michael doesn't just gaslight Willow--Dante got the treatment today with Mr. Clutching His Pearls at the terrible, terrible accusation that he would ever--I said EVER--turn Sonny into the Feds.  It's almost as if we all imagined the months he went around telling anyone who would listen that that's exactly what he intended to do.

In fashion crimes, looks like Kristina swiped Carly's pale green blazer and Olivia decided to wear a bathrobe to work.

Glad Dante finally spoke up against Michael although should have been done long ago.

Michael lied right to Dante's face. He wouldn't do anything to hurt his siblings? He wouldn't do anything to cause retaliation?  That was his exact plan.  It was Willow and Mommy who changed his mind.

So Sonny must pay for his crimes he's a criminal, but Carly and Drew's crimes are not their fault?

Kristina and Nina are good. Like seeing Kristina bond with her. Kristina take charge of the mob! Alexis says everyone will be vulnerable, someone fill the vacuum.

Numolly and her surrogacy can go away. Far away forever.

So tired of Sasha being drugged story. Let it be done.

I don't know whether it was a retcon or the replacement writers not knowing the history, but that scene of Michael and Kristina was weird. She said M must have realized by 10 years old that his father wasn't a coffee importer, and then he said something about Dad always keeping his business hidden from his kids. That's not how I remember it. Wasn't there a scene where Tamara Braun explained to the little red-haired Michael that Daddy and Jason have to kill people sometimes but they're still good people, like soldiers in the armed forces? Then, wasn't Michael always very aware and pleased about being part of a mob family, even trying to order someone killed once?

If producers think the Sasha story is some kind of tour de force acting moment for JK (Cody), I must regrettably inform them that I found his scenes unwatchable and actually had second hand embarrassment for him. In the couple moments when I could not get to my remote FF button fast enough, he appeared to be trying (badly) to go full on Jack Nicholson.

I have to agree that Dante really has no business being a cop if thinks his mobster father (who shot a cop in the chest) is "a good man" and he feels the need to go bust Michael's balls over turning Sonny in WHILE HE IS ON DUTY, NO LESS. Ridiculous. However, he remains super hot in those blue suits, so I'll allow it.

My main issue is that other characters aren’t treating Molly like she’s being irrational. Sam and Alexis have been coddling her and TJ flat out agrees with Molly about Kristina. Kristina was a bit pushy but nothing to warrant Molly’s level of vitriol. Like we’ve seen this family bicker with each other and have strong opinions about one another’s life but I don’t think there’s been this level of hate since when Sam first found out she was Alexis’ daughter.

I don't know if they're coddling her because of her infertility, but Molly needs to have the taste slapped out of her mouth. She flips her lid the second Kristina's name is mentioned.

This coddling isn't going to lead anywhere good in any case.

And TJ has always been a pushover. He's the Willow to Molly's Michael.

I thought it was fine when everyone agreed Kristina had overstepped with offering to be the surrogate so soon, but now everyone is acting as if Kristina is at Nina levels of evil or something, and Kristina has repeatedly apologized for being presumptuous.

I wish Alexis had pushed the point harder yesterday when she said the important thing was for Molly to be a mother. It didn't matter how she got there, even if it wasn't how Mollly expected it to happen. It's the end result that matters.

And yes, DZ does look hot in those blue suits :)

I get that Alexis misses her sister but she needed to come down hard on Molly after Molly saw Kristina at Alexis' office and turned around to walk back out. In no way is what Kristina and Molly doing anywhere near equal and Molly is the one who is causing the problems. Plus I bet Molly just showed up there to have Alexis (molly)coddle her some more. Doesn't she ever go to work? She's not the one carrying the maybe fertilized cell.

Speaking of bitches, Carly acting like it's all Nina's problem when three of her own children (plus Avery) are in danger if another mob goes after Sonny's close people, and Carly Jr. reacting to hearing Spencer talk about calming Ace down with Esme. They're just awful people.

thought what really enraged them was when she showed up and made a scene while they were interviewing someone, but I have a hard time keeping up with this stupid story.

But it wasn't even a scene.  Tolly were interviewing with the surogacy agent.  Kristina walked in, unaware that they were having an interview since they didn't tell her.  She was bitching about Joss being a bitch as she walked in.  Saw that they were in an interview, apologized and left.  That was literally the end of it.

because you know that surrogate isn't going to want to give the baby up.

Well, how stupid to have the surrogate use her own egg and not a donor egg. Who would even think that's a good idea.

That said, I think that Molly is coming from a place of very deep seated resentment of Kristina.

But she just woke up one day with it.
