Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

I don't blame Sasha for telling Cody what Willow had told her. It was an impossible situation for Sasha, who had been in a relationship with Michael and still cared about him. Willow should not have asked her to keep the secret. And as  @dubbel  zout said, it's generally understood that partners tell each other everything.

And while Sasha feels terrible about what she did, she's not the adulterer, Michael is.

I don’t know if couples have to tell each other everything. I’ve seen shows have debates about this (granted they were comedies like Friends and Seinfeld.) I tend to tell my husband everything, if it’s something concerning him. But, if a friend told me something in confidence I wouldn’t feel the need to tell my partner. I don’t have an issue with Sasha telling Cody. She did it right after it happened because she needed to vent and figure out what to do. I think she should have told Willow that she had told Cody. I don’t recall Willow even begging Sasha to keep it secret. Sasha didn’t seem like she had any intention of saying anything. And, it doesn’t seem like she has any issue (so far) with keeping her friend in the dark about sleeping with her husband.

As far as sleeping with Michael, the married spouse does have more culpability,  but in a situation like this where Sasha is friends with the other party, she has her share of culpability, too.

He's been okay at time but he also manipulated Georgie to be a brat to Austin because he wanted to break up Maxie's relationship with Austin so i don't consider him in the Mac category.j

He also abandoned Georgie first with Ellie then Maxie cause he wanted to continue chase after his bitch Jason & his burnt shadow. He ani't no good father and he would never have gave Georgie to Maxie if Ellie didn't dump his sorry ass, for continue to run to P.C not to bring Georgie to see her mom but to run behind Jason & do his dirty work. She was raising her and she finally got fed up with his shit. I remember it clearly cause Maxie was making poor put upon ass clown to be some victim and Ellie the bad guy. I didn't even like Ellie's ass either along with the baboon and rat but it irked the hell out of me cause Maxie treats him like a glorified invalid who is 5 and can't do no wrong.

Out of the kids Rocco did the best with the reaction. Danny's actor is too smiley. I was shocked Rocco could have more than a blank expression for once. He was better than MB.

Was just coming on to say the same thing. Why was Danny smiling when he was just told his mother is dead? Rocco behaved more like Sam’s son than her own son.

i liked the chapel scenes when Rocco said that he was jealous of Scout and Danny for having their mother around and wished it could be his mom. Of course he feels bad about it now but it’s a normal reaction. I’m in my 60s and still have twinges when I see friends whose fathers are still alive or whose mothers are healthy when mine isn’t. Of course I’m happy for them, but there’s always a small part of me asking ‘why not me?’ So I completely get it.

Drew is a complete and total ***********. His reaction to hearing his ex-wife and mother of his child is dead was no different from anything else. If anything he was more emotional when the congressman died! Can we please drop ship CM to another planet? Or at least back to Hallmark? He’s so bad!

once again I was a blubbering mess throughout most of todays show. Dante going in to be with Sam, Alexis breaking the news to her two nitwit daughters who can’t seem to stop fighting for even 30 seconds, the cold, calm way she informed Laura that no, nothing happened to Lulu. That it was HER daughter who died.

MB didn’t display any emotion either. Sonny tried to comfort Alexis and Dante but just had a blank expression on his face the whole time. 🙄

so Portia finally said they’re going to do an autopsy, not just ‘investigate.’ I’m reallly surprised they didn’t keep Sam on life support in case Alexis wanted to donate other organs.  Or was that not a possibility since she’d been gone for 30 minutes while they tried to resuscitate her? Surely Sam would have wanted others to have the chance for a healthy life if she was a match.

the Holly/Robert flashbacks were nice but she can still disappear tomorrow and I wouldn’t miss her. And really those scenes could have taken place on Monday or Tuesday to allow more of Sam’s friends and relatives to hear and react to the news. previews show Jason telling Spinelli, so I hope Maxie gets equal time. And of course Michael and Joss have to get their screen time as well. Michael SHOULD have an emotional response because he and Sam used to be very close. After all, she’s the one who helped him lose his virginity to what’s her face, the stripper who was killed by a crane.

Dominic was awful today.  So over the top.  I think the writers might be more to blame though.  There's only so much the actors can do with shit dialogue and storytelling.

I did not realize that Laura was a Catholic.

I like the Danny actor, and think he works well with Jason and Scout.  I don't mind how smiley he was; people react to death in different ways.

I couldn't disagree more.  He broke my heart.

Also good: the Laura/Rocco scenes.  That kid is miles better than Danny actor, bless his heart.

Final scene of Alexis with her arms around Molly and Kristina was devastating.

I wonder if Portia keeps saying 'investigation' as that's the official speak of the hospital.

Finally, because I was getting annoyed at the lapse, we get Carly's reaction.  I mean, if something happens in PC and she's not immediately alerted, has it even really happened? /s

Kristina came to do something for her sister and Molly needed to go after her for not reading an email.  Molly is looking worse here. But poor Alexis now stuck with these two.

Jason is telling the news to Scout? She should not even be calling him uncle or remember him. Drew too.  These people are strangers to her. Forcing both brothers in is eye rolling.

Dante with Sam was so sad. Rocco with Laura too.

Sam would have been the donor if it was anyone. Dante needs to not blame himself.

Scout and Danny now stuck with those deadbeats hopefully they stay with Dante or Q's.

Ugh, just leave town now, Holly. Your apologies and excuses are worthless.

Just what is the point of Holly going back to about their marriage? She’s acting as if she didn’t return in ‘91, 2006, AND last year! And that she got pregnant with Sasha right after finding out about Robin. I couldn’t make out half of what she meant with the before and after nonsense word salad. And NO WAY will I believe Robert cheated on Anna-they were MARRIED when they “blew up” and were presumed dead. Though I did love those flashbacks of HAWT Robert!Scorpio!🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍😍

Sasha’s her friend, so I do think the bare minimum she owed her was telling her that there was someone else out there who knew her secret and could blow her life apart. Though, in Sasha’s defense I don’t think it occurred to her that Cody would tell anyone.

True, but par for the course for this FAKATA show, the recording happened because James told Ned about the same conversation and he hired the P.I. who caught it on tape.

Reaction to the reactions:

I actually thought Drew's immediate reaction was the most realistic, because he had to spend several seconds trying to make sense of the words that had just been said to him.  But after that, he moved too quickly into reminiscing.  No one goes from completely stunned to acceptance that quickly.

I thought it was well done that Danny read the look on Jason's face and knew immediately that something was gravely wrong.

I agree with others that the Laura/Rocco scenes were excellent, and Rocco (sorry, too many kid actors, I don't know their names yet) delivered.  I thought the dialogue was particularly well written.

No surprise that DZ hit the right notes with Dante's scenes, especially in the hospital room.  For me, the Dante/Sam relationship has never been particularly flashy, but rather boringly solid, like most relationships.  Which means he will mourn deeply.

NLG's portrayal of Alexis hitting that wall of numbness after grief, yet meeting her maternal responsibilities was spot on.  I thought Molly's stunned silence was a more realistic reaction than Kristina's.  Watching Molly get excited for Sam about the engagement and then immediately remembering the circumstance was heart-rending.

Many soaps will devote the entire episode to a major event like this one, and I wish GH had.  As much as I love Robert Scorpio, I could have waited until Monday to see him with Holly.  And please, show, do not send him off into the sunset with her.

Argh GH writers!!  Cardiac arrest and a heart attack are not the same thing! A simple google search could have told them this. I know it’s a common mistake, but it’s a pet peeve of mine. Jason of all people actually explained it more correctly when he said her heart stopped (maybe he’s having Jason Q flashbacks of med school).

Good job with the acting today as the fallout from Sam’s death is happening but I really wish they would get her down to the morgue, or to the Cassadine’s deep freeze lab.

Okay, this is moot, but Chase, do please STFU about offering Dante marriage advice.

He was married before, and he he knows what to do and what not.

At least we were saved from Cujo rushing to the hospital to make Sam’s death about her. Though I 😒🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄😒 at her line about respecting Sam even when she hated her. Really? Really??? Respecting her would have been to step back and not keep interfering in her and Jason’s marriage, you lying heifer.

Agreed that Rocco was really good in his scenes. Scout was good. Danny had moments of good and moments of less good.

I thought Laura’s initial reaction was fine but at the couch I wanted Alexis to slap her in the face. But those scenes with Laura and Rocco were so good.

Drew can miss me with the not immediately going to wherever his daughter was in the world. Yes that was a writing decision but it was one that made me angry at Drew.

Jason was fine telling the kids but he should have called Drew first. Carly need not be involved.

I thought Holly and Robert’s scenes were fine but they shouldn’t have been in this episode. Weirdly I didn’t feel that way about Max and Spin. And I thought they hit the Zenón joke a little too hard but I liked it when I saw the costume.

im usually team Molly between the sisters but thought she was obnoxious until Alexis arrived. Both gestures were nice. Both were appropriate.

But I thought Kristina was too broad. I get the character is more emotional but….

DZ hit it out of the park and I probably like MB in scenes with NLG and DZ best so he worked as well here for me as he’s going to be able to. I didn’t love him but he fit in the episode more seemlessly than Carly.

I liked when Georgie perked up to hear about Aunt Georgie. It was a small moment but it worked for me and I’m not a huge fan of kid Georgie because I blame her name for us not being able to ever get back adult Georgie.

Really? I thought DZ was amazing today. We must have been watching two different shows. That said, we’re all allowed our own opinion. The only one is wasn’t thrilled with was KM but it’s not really her fault. It’s what was written. The writers chose her to obnoxious up till the bitter end. They have really made Kristina so unlikable. I just hope KM did all her dead scenes with NLG and DZ in one day. I can’t imagine having to come in another day for that stuff.

You don't have to be either Roman Catholic OR culturally appropriative to cross yourself in church. Some Episcopalians do it-- the "high" Episcopal church teaches it. (The "low" branch in which I was raised does not; I occasionally go to a small weekday service where everyone but me crosses themselves at certain points. I'd imitate them, but it would seem inauthentic to me.) I can see Laura coming from an Episcopalian family.

Or the writers may just be ignorant of sectarian Christian nuances. I still remember an adaptation of Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend" on PBS where the marriage service of the secondary lovers was done in a Latin the Church of England hadn't then used for more than three hundred years. Aargh!

Sasha knew what she knew because she witnessed it, not because Willow confided in her. And Sasha had every right to turn around and confide in Cody (who I believe was just a friend at the time, not a partner) about her conflicting feelings over alerting her friend Michael vs protecting her friend Willow.

The only person who was wrong in this situation was Willow, who should have told her husband what happened, and was stupid for thinking it would remain a secret. But of course she didn’t tell Michael because she actually wants to do more with Drew— another thing that makes her stupid.

If I remember correctly from my Grey’s Anatomy classes, there is in fact a short window when organs can be harvested. I’m thinking maybe 10 minutes?

But of course we know the real reason there was no organ donation is there was no cast member currently in need of a transplant. (Other than Lulu, and she already done had herses.) Screw everyone else, if they’re not a FOC*, they’re not worthy.

Dante was shortchanged here, in favor of Jason (no surprise).  Jason gets the couple song, he gets the flashbacks, he gets the first reaction.  Dante gets to find out the next soap day.

I wonder if it’s the show’s way of saying Sam/Jason were her ultimate love story and Dante’s is Lulu since she’s about to wake up, to have the audience quickly forget about what was, for what’s to come?

I only saw DZ’s acting on the Instagram clip, when he came into Sam’s room (poor Kelly still lying there) and broke down. It looked over the top to me and I stopped watching. Maybe if I had watched the whole show, I would’ve seen it differently.

I was annoyed at Laura when I saw the previews, but her reaction makes more sense in the scene. If she had only seen Alexis crying and reacted like that, it would have been weird. I don’t think she even saw Alexis. She sees Dante and Rocco crying. It makes sense she assumes it’s about Lulu. I also liked that later when Laura says something about how it shouldn’t have happened and Alexis agrees, you can see Laura realize that her being there isn’t helping and she leaves as soon as possible.

Alexis going after Laura (if that happens) is inconsistent with these two characters' history because of their long-time relationship as Nikolas' beloved mother and aunt. Laura tearfully thanked Alexis for doing the eulogy at Spencer's unnecessary grave marker/headstone. Alexis knows Sam wanted to be Lulu's donor out of love for Dante and Rocco because she told Alexis that to her face. Laura has only seen Sam long enough to say thank you. She never begged or pressured, let alone demanded that Sam save Lulu's life.

Yes, Laura saw Rocco sobbing on Dante's shoulder and then saw Dante crying and understandably thought something happened while the already very fragile Lulu was in post-op. Alexis had her back to all of them when Laura reacted to what she was seeing and asked about Lulu. I agree that Laura realized she needed to give Alexis space to grieve and speak to Dante alone. I thought the Laura - Rocco scene in the hospital was heartbreaking and very well done by the actors.  Laura knows exactly how Alexis feels in this moment because she herself has mourned for Lucky and Nikolas when she thought they were dead.

Yeah, I think it's likely, or perhaps Sam's diving caused something to happen. Given the previous thing with Lulu's respirator, I don't think her death is transplant related

The larger organs might not have been viable for donation, but I bet her corneas still would have been. That would have been a nice underlining of Sam's generosity, I agree. And for a story about organ donation, it's a very blatant omission. Did no one think to look at her driver's license?

I've never felt particularly invested in Sam since I wasn't watching the show during her glory years, but so far I've found the fallout from her death quite moving. DZ and NLG were the standouts for me, but just about everyone is rising to the occasion. The kid who plays Danny is a little too... smiley for this material, though, and during the Dante/Sonny scenes I was very distracted by how bad MB's dye job is (is it just me or does it look blue in places along his hairline?)

I can't believe what a pissbaby Michael is being about Willow kissing someone else when he, you know, covered up a murder on their property. Are they just dropping the Jagger plot now? It feels like now that Alexis has been cleared, they're just moving on.

Georgie dressing up as Zenon and Maxie not knowing who that was, was a welcome light moment in an otherwise super heavy episode.  And I said it before, but I really think they did a great job casting Georgie because she looks like her namesake.

I feel so bad for Scout.  Nothing will make me cry more than a little girl losing her mom.  I'm not discounting Danny or anybody else's pain, but I just definitely super feel for Scout.

I find it weird that Jason called Carly and told him to meet her at Bobbie's so that she could go tell Drew. Why not just call Drew to meet him at Bobbie's.  Because it really would have been nice for Scout to have her dad there or even be the one to tell her.  I think Jason did as good a job as you can do it at that sort of thing, but he did seem to be directing most of his conversation to Danny, which makes sense.

Also loved the Robert/Holly flashbacks.  Love '80s GH.

And I know Lulu's going to wake up, and I know Sam would have died no matter what she did, but I'm watching this and thinking what a waste that someone died to prolong the life of a long-term coma patient who realistically speaking will never wake up.

They had to throw the Jasam fans a bone 🤣 seriously though it makes sense. Sam snd Jason were together for most of her run and they were a very popular couple. She and Dante have only been together for a couple of years and their relationship has been mostly in the background. I hope we get some nice Maxie/Sam flashbacks

Well I haven’t watched yet but I’m pretty sure I will sob and I am glad they called back to Jason and Sam’s relationship.  I loved them.  I’m not sure what’s happened between then and now but Steve and Kelly both lost their spark, probably because they can’t stand each other now for some bts reason. I really loved their relationship in the beginning and how Jason helped Sam grieve her baby.  I also really liked their song.  I’ll see myself out now.

Unpopular opinion but I also really liked Sam and Dante.  They never really got enough screen time but they had a secure, mature relationship and a blended family.  It wasn’t a ball of fire, but I enjoyed it.

As far as Jason involving Carly in whatever the fuck, I mean of course he did because Carly needs to be involved in every single damn thing, whether it makes sense or not.  I half expect to see her pop up in the Q kitchen making her microwave pizzas for thanksgiving dinner 🙄

I did too. It was a bit clumsy in the beginning, because the writers were obviously pairing them up because both characters were at loose ends. But they worked. (Not that it wasn't weird, considering all the family they shared but it was soapy weird.)

As far as the organ donation optics, it would have been better for Sam to die in the "diving for the gun" red herring. Lulu would still get the liver she needed. But selfishly I'm glad we don't have to watch Alexis blame herself and Molly blame Kristina. Better to memory hole Cates than make us suffer more than we already have with Molly and Kristina.

I had no idea about the Zenon character either, but now that the connection has been pointed out, integrating the Maxie/Spinelli family scenes into the episode makes more sense.  Unlike the Robert/Holly scenes, which really didn't belong, these family scenes were apparently really just "fluff" designed to give us a break from the high drama of Sam's death, and not there to move the plot forward.

And I agree that Georgie looks completely like her namesake.  The hairstyle didn't hurt in that regard.

Jason is telling the news to Scout? She should not even be calling him uncle or remember him. Drew too.  These people are strangers to her. Forcing both brothers in is eye rolling.

Overall, Scout has lived with Jason and Sam for more time than she lived with Sam and her dad. First when Sam divorced Drew, Jason was around more and then living with the three of them again at Sam and Danny's request. Then when Sam went to prison, Jason was living alone with/ "raising" the kids in the Penthouse apartment. She understands that he is Uncle Jason, her dad's brother.  Jason has a long history with Sam and Scout knows that he is Danny's dad so it's not like it was wildly inappropriate for her to hear the news from Jason. (I prefer how SB played Jason's role in this to CM/Drew, who reacted to the news like Sam was a neighbor he used to know instead of the mother of his young child.) Alexis was in state of grief from being the last one with Sam and had to be the one to tell her other daughters; I don't think she had enough mental strength to gently tell the kids what happened. Dante was handling his own son's grief and in the midst of feeling crushing guilt that Sam died because she loved them. That kind of intense guilt mindset would be toxic to children hearing the worst new of their lives. Little Scout would probably be even more traumatized by seeing him in this moment.

I assume the only reason Drew was in these scenes was to insert Carly into a supportive role in this 'grieving Sam' storyline. She's Drew's ex-girlfriend, current "friend now and Jason's ex-lover/current bff. I hated the last shot of her standing in Monica's house, in tears over Sam's children/ Alan's grandchildren after everything she has done to hurt Monica and Alan's family.

Though I did love those flashbacks of HAWT Robert!Scorpio!

Yes - TR and ES were both SO beautiful back in my College years. And those accents - yikes, sounded so musical.

I've always been kind of "meh" on Kelly Monaco, but her treatment on GH makes me hope she goes on to better things. For some reason, I see her as a great romantic lead for Hallmark or Great American Family movies. As I've said before, it really worked for Ryan Paevey - he's become a more-than-competent actor doing RomComs for those channels.

Ryan Paevey actually tweeted/posted sometime earlier this year that he's no longer working with Hallmark - some kind of falling out, though he's never given details. And turns out he's been acting as a caregiver to his mother 😢 Hopefully in time he can get to a better place emotionally and mentally.

Man, that's heavy. Thanks for the update @Maelstrom. I was the primary caretaker for my Father in his final days (he died of Liver Disease, ironically), so I know that it's no easy task.

If there are any fellow Christmas Movie Lovers out there, you should catch RP in a "Timeless Christmas." Scored an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has become one of my top 20 holiday flicks.

ETA - I read the article and can commiserate with his impending feeling of loneliness. I was an only child; my Mom died when I was 18, and my Dad died when I was 24. The feeling of isolation I had when he passed on was indescribable. Wish I could reach out and tell him that it does get better in time.

I think everyone with the exception of CM really stepped up for this story including Burton. Nancy Lee and Dominic were indeed the standouts.

I really hope this turns out to be some sort of Angel of Death story or Sidwell or it has some other explanation than a surgical complication from the transplant. Soaps don't do Agnes Nixon style advocacy anymore but telling a story that is somewhat anti-donation is irresponsible.

I've never been a Sam fan. And 21 years is a perfectly respectable soap run. This doesn't chart with the Frankie Frames or Maureen Bauers of soap (and meta soap) tragedies for me. But it's still very sad and I wish Kelly the best.

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?
