I didn't realize Hallmark had also canceled the annual kitten bowl.  Are we witnessing a slow motion rebranding?

ETA:  It doesn't surprise me that CBB left Hallmark.  She doesn't seem like the kind of person who appreciates the diversity the channels finally started to include after years of ignoring significant portions of the population.

For a channel called Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, it seems like very few mysteries are left. Aurora was their longest-running series by far

I wish they'd make more Mystery Woman movies.  I thought those were well done and not your 'average beachy-waved-pastel-wearing-coat-4-inch-stiletto-boot-empty-coffee-cup-I-must-get-involved-even-though-the-police-warned-me-not-to' offering

Except the actual article includes this bit:

TVLine hears that Bure’s GAC deal is exclusive to rom-coms and holiday fare, so she ostensibly could continue on with her Aurora Teagarden Mysteries franchise at Hallmark. TVLine has emailed Hallmark for any updates on that front.

It sounds like she could continue doing the mystery movies.

She also will take on a prominent executive role at the company to oversee/curate programming for the networks as a whole, create year-round seasonal celebration content for the networks,

Soooo, she's going to be responsible for 40000000 Christmas movies for them?

Lacey Chabert signed an exclusive deal in February to star in and produce movies for Hallmark channels for next two years, so maybe we will get more Crossword Mystery movies to fill the void.

But then we have to hear that baby voice of hers, which annoys the hell out of me.

Maybe they'll recast Aurora & keep the series going, even though the character has gotten pretty insufferable.

In addition to Bure, McKellar and Loughlin, former Home & Family hosts Cameron Mathison and Debbie Matenopoulos recently migrated to GAC Family, where they lorded over Welcome to the Great American Christmas, a Christmas special previewing the network’s inaugural slate of holiday films — a slate of originals headlined entirely by Hallmark grads, including Mathison, Susie Abromeit, Nick Bateman, Rukiya Bernard, Cindy Busby, Sara Canning, Dillon Casey, Torrance Coombs, Trevor Donovan, Brendan Fehr, Jennie Garth, Maggie Lawson, Jen Lilley, Sarah Lind, Daniel Lissing, Jessica Lowndes, Matthew MacCaull, Chad Michael Murray, Sam Page, Merritt Patterson, Christopher Russell, Becca Tobin, Jill Wagner and Dewshane Williams.

Yahoo brought the snark with the phrase above.  (Bolding is mine.)

I wonder what GAC is offering all these people that they're all jumping ship?

The majority of them didn’t jump ship. GAC launched so close to Christmas that most of the movies were acquired from a production company Abbott had a relationship with from his time at Hallmark. Those movies would have been produced with or without GAC and would have been scattered over multiple channels.

For the ones that have jumped ship I suspect it’s a combination of matching beliefs, creative control and the promise leading roles.

I think Danica said she went because GAC offered her more opportunities and HMM put her mystery series on pause.  For CBB I think the bigger issue is her very, very narrow definition of wholesome.

Now that Hallmark has been compromised they can produce content without bowing to political correctness.

Compromised? I don’t consider Queer and POC to be a threat or infection. Diversity isn’t political correctness.

Jill Wagner seems to be a pretty smart cookie. She went from being the butt of the joke on that stupid Wipe-out show to starring in the best mystery series on Hallmark. I would be inclined to trust her judgement.

Just as I would trust CCB to know when Hallmark has veered away from the sensibilities that made her want to work there in the first place.

They know what they are doing.

I'm happy for CCB if she feels she's found a place where she can be free to practice her religious beliefs without feeling pressured to participate in things she's not comfortable doing.

If Hallmark wants to get away from its traditional Christian values (as evidenced by their original programming content) then I think those actors who feel the need to go elsewhere should be free to do so without stigma. Just as those who like the changes should be free to stay where they are happy.

There are many other religious persuasions (Muslims, for example) who would have issue with some of the things shown on some networks and might not wish to participate. I know in Bollywood they don't even allow kissing in their movies.  IOW, each actor should be free to choose to do what they find comfortable without persecution.

Freedom of religion is a founding principle of our country, and I hope we continue to allow others to hold their beliefs without forcing them to compromise for someone else's.  (Hallmark is a Canadian company, though, so I don't know how they feel about persecuting people for their religious beliefs up there.)

I've been watching some UpTV while I wait for GAC to get going with more movies and I enjoy some of them.  They're a lot heavier on religion. I'm kind of surprised some of these actors didn't choose to go there, but I welcome more choices.  There are complete networks devoted to all kinds of diverse groups, so this more choices is good.

Back on topic: I'm going to miss The Aurora Teagarden mysteries, but they at least seem to have had a good run and wrapped things up with her marriage and things.

I hate the way they've left Mystery 101.  If they had left it with the kiss I would be happier.  At least that way it would be like the Fixer Upper mysteries where the couple can be seen as "happily ever after."

It'll be interesting to see if something can happen with that. Perhaps GAC or some other movie maker can pick it up?  I'd like some more Crossword Mysteries too.

I really think Hallmark messed up not making these into TV series.  Their series shows seem to have done pretty well, but they don't seem interested in doing the mysteries that way for some reason.

Hallmark movies were never as explicitly Christian as movies as on UP or even BET.  Hallmark also isn't a Christian company.  Previous movies used to have gay people in them.  It was Abbott and Crown media that decided the presence of them was anti-Christian (or anti-family) even though many Christian denominations do welcome members of the LGBTQ+ community. As do many families.

Hallmark and Crown Media decided to knuckle under to pressure groups and include content that they had previously not included in their productions Which is of course their right as it is the right of the actors and audience to move on to somewhere else that does not.

Canada tends to be pretty liberal  The only religious group I can think of that were persecuted were the Doukhobors a hundred years ago (although they were committing a lot of arson at the time) and pockets of anti-Muslim sentiment in this century. People are however, to quote Gore Vidal, prevented from persecuting others. (I enjoyed the book The Rebel Christ by Rev. Michael Coren, an examination of Christ's values in the Bible.)

I was looking forward to Dying for Chocolate since it was written by the writer of the Mystery 101 series but I was disappointed. The mystery was okay but the relationship was too rushed, they were in a stage mid-movie that should have been in a third movie. It didn't help that on my station it was followed by Cut, Color, Murder which did not just the meet cute but the whole antagonism/attraction much better.

They didn’t knuckle under. Crown Media’s parent company is progressive. They have been very deliberately trying to appeal to a diverse market for years. They introduced a line of gay marriage cards in 2008. Hallmark Hall of Fame and early Hallmark Channel did not have the same restrictions. What we’re seeing isn’t them giving in. It is Crown Media moving to be in line with Hallmark’s stated goals.

For all the talk about recents movies being the first to have openly LGTBQ+ characters, Kimberly Sustand actually played a lesbian in 2012. As Hallmark Channel grew in popularity, Abbott slowly molded it into what he wanted and it was successful enough that Hallmark Cards let him. At the same time, Hallmark Channel also claimed to be inclusive and made lots of promises of developing more inclusive content. Then with the Zola commercial drama, Hallmark Cards stepped in, ousted Abbott and restructured the leadership to be consistent with their values.

I don’t have a problem with channels catering to different audiences even if that includes values that I am very opposed to. What I did have a problem with is that most of the time they never just own it. They usually give lip service to inclusion and acceptance. It’s not like Hallmark stated as a conservative, Christian channel and people were pushing them to be something different. Most of the people here got started watching with the Hallmark that made Trading Christmas where both couple have sex over the course of the movie. Then we watching Hallmark Channel morph into something else all the while people in charge we’re denying the agenda that was blatantly obvious. Hallmark Channel wanted me as a viewer but would never but someone who looked like me as a lead character.

Most of the focus is on LGTBQ+ characters but Hallmark Channel under Abbott also had a clear no interracial couple policy. There are appalling stories from people who helped make these movies that entire scenes would be reshot because there were extras in the background that might be perceived to be an interracial couple.

It’s funny because in the books Tom was all into Goldy in book 1. She didn’t really fall for him  until late into the 2nd or  maybe the 3rd book.  They changed the storyline from the book quite a bit though.

I think this is going to be a wait since Brennan Elliott's wife is battling stage IV metastatic gastric cancer. It doesn't sound good and they have two young children. However, both Lacey Chabert and Elliott signed deals with Hallmark, so I expect they do plan on more movies in the future, but I suspect it might be awhile.

They need to find new stars and a new series of books to revitalize their brand. It’s like a ball team that lost it’s two best players to free agency. They don’t really have anyone in the minors so they need to hire some big time free agents.

Just based on recent cancellations and events, at this point I would not be surprised if they get out of mystery business and rename channel.  Good thing i can get my fill of mysteries on Britbox and Acorn streaming services.

Brittany Bristow is talented, and from her interview with the DTH guys, has loads of personality and is fun.

There are plenty of young actresses that can act.  Put them in these movies and they’ll be known to the audience too.  There are a lot of viewers who know these actors & actresses from seeing them on Hallmark, and that’s the only reason they know them. Danica and CCB are 47 & 46, so they can’t play 30 year-olds for much longer without it looking like  when Joan Crawford was on The Secret Storm taking over her daughter’s role.

IMO, Aurora Teagarden was played out and got boring. They should have stopped making them 3 episodes ago, so I won’t miss that one a bit.

Crown Media /Hallmark has signed Andrew Walker, Lacey, Holly Robinson Peete, Brennan Elliott, Taylor Cole, and Heather Hemmens to contracts.

From what Andrew said in an interview he is guaranteed 2 movies a year, not including any additional Curious Caterer mysteries, and could always include more movies. He & Nikki both, to me, sounded like there would probably be more episodes, but maybe I was reading more into it than I should have.

Hallmark and Crown Media will be fine.

Brennan mentioned in DTH a few months ago that he and Lacey wanted to do more of these, but wasn’t sure they would or not. He also said Lacey had a lot of ideas for future projects. IIRC, that interview was before he and Lacey signed their contracts with Hallmark, so maybe Lacey made some requests and got some promises.

From some of the feedback I’ve seen and read, the move from fewer mysteries to more dramatic movies is not very popular with viewers, so I would not be surprised to see more mysteries.

Most of their big time stars were former child actors who brought an audience with them. So maybe they can search out some former child stars to feature in a mystery series.

Maybe the girls from Modern Family or one of those kid shows on Nickelodeon.

That seems to work best.

CBB is lucky that she's privileged enough to be able to be in the position that she's now been hired to curate a safe space for herself and an entire network.

As far as I know and can find out online Hallmark and Crown Media are based in the US. A lot of their stuff has been filmed in Canada though just like a other TV related things have been for years.

I'm sure CBB was happy she was able to get her daughter into one of her Aurora movies on Hallmark before she stopped doing them. The Aurora Teagarden series is one that had a long run that probably could have ended before it did.

One of the main actors from the Aurora series of movies was in the last Mystery 101 . It was kind of a distraction for me personally because of how known he was to me for being in almost all of the Aurora movies. I'm not saying the same actors can't be in other movies/series but it made me think about how it's been mentioned that some Hallmark actors/actresses get recycled in movies that air not far apart sometimes.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered started out as a TV show almost 10 yrs ago which lasted for a season then they decided to turn it into series of TV movies instead.

It started as a movie.  Then they decided to make a TV show out of it for one season before turning it back into a movie series.

Peter Benson even had a less than 3 minute cameo in the Santino Fontana/Krysta Rodriguez movie.  It was hilarious.

That's exactly what I was thinking - that either a rebrand was in the works or that HMM would go away completely.  There's no reason for two* Hallmark channels that have the same love story content.  But why they would get out of the mystery business is beyond me.  Hallmark has had mysteries for twenty years so why abandon them now?  It's disappointing.

I started watching Britbox and Acorn at bedtime last fall when 24/7 Christmas started and have continued doing so since HMM made the bizarre decision to run Murder, She Wrote (my very favorite show) episodes chronologically early morning and late night, meaning I'm missing many of the best episodes.  I wish they'd at least run those blocks on different schedules so the early risers and the late nighters would each get to see the full 12 season run.

Anyway, I hope HMM changes course and recommits to mysteries.  I don't give a shit about CCB or even Danica since her mystery series was awful.  What I want are good mysteries.

*I don't know what's on Hallmark Drama besides reruns of old 70s dramas.  Is there ever new content on there?  I do know the Drama channel is exempt from the four months a year barrage of 24/7 Christmas movies.

I do think there were plans to do new content on Hallmark Drama.  Signed, Sealed, Delivered started on Hallmark.  Then it moved to HMM.  The latest movie was initially going to be on Drama--I think as a way to launch originals. But plans on doing new content on Drama ended up changing.  It might have been due to new leadership or the pandemic or all of the above.

The most recent movie in the series ended up airing on HMM.

They’ve recently been airing some of the older mysteries that weren’t too bad (bad-cliché, prissy, touting fads, etc.) and the contrast is glaring. Gourmet, contractor, archeologist-with recognized actors-they seem to keep interest throughout. I don’t know if it was the writing or production, but they seem unable to duplicate that formula now. They went for stupid nostalgia with Kellie Martin’s series and it really backfired. I doubt they could save the channel with literary source material (popular mystery writers) because they only seem able to end up with something that really irritates book fans due to their treatment of it. Maybe they intend simply to rerun the old, acquire syndicated material (old), rotate, wash, and rinse. If they do, what’s the point of their streaming services? I’ve already figured out that’s unnecessary because sooner or later the content ends up on one of the 3 channels.

Cut, Color, Murder is being replayed tonight to your point of recycling the same movies.

I thought it was disappointing. The leads did have chemistry and I knew Julie Gonzalo from her time on Supergirl. The two lwads had chemistry. Especially when she made him pay for his haircut which astonished me because nobody ever pays for anything on Hallmark.

The set up at the hair salon was sort of interesting but what really redeemed it at the end was the cliffhanger that had nothing to do with the mystery that preceded it. I have to conclude that they are planning to put this new series into the rotation.

I have yet to figure out why they didn’t seem to pursue more Gourmet Detective movies. Both actors were very good.

Loved the old series - cannot remember the name. The actress was in the Back To The Future movies, I think. She wrote and designed crossword puzzles; which seemed to be a cover for her former CIA-type past. Her old partner was constantly recruiting her for cases. She had husband and kids who were not annoying. The cases were intriguing. And that is why….

Many of the current mystery series are really not that well written. The network wants us to focus in what Hallmark regulars are in them; and not so much in The Who-done-it and why. We are left with the main thought of will or when the leads will get together. The network can’t help itself - everything needs to be a romance movie.

I'm watching one of the Emma Fielding Mysteries (the tree frog one) and there are two things that I'm finding super irritating tonight. I've watched all of these time and again and this has never bothered me before but tonight: gah!! When the cast is walking together from one place to the next they always stare directly ahead. Even when they are talking to each other. Eyes straight ahead, maybe off to the side so that they aren't staring directly at the camera but never looking at each other. Personally, when I'm walking and talking to someone I mostly look at who I'm talking to while glancing in front of me to make sure I'm not about to fall. This staring straight ahead seems so unnatural. It's happened in 3 different scenes now! And that leads me to 2. Everyone's eyes are so wide! It's actually kind of creepy. Like someone took a melon ball and scooped out any excess flesh around their eyes.
