I wonder if she did actually climb Mt Kilimanjaro ?

Still nothing on Instagram, I don't have an IG account so I may not be seeing everything. There's a pic of her & Joe out walking, I would imagine at the Vineyard, as she has a jacket on that would not be needed anywhere in FL in August.  It's rainy and her hair's all frizzy but she's got the bronzer/highligher going full stop.

I'm pretty sure if the son of the President of Lebanon was holding the daughter of the US National Security Advisor hostage, there would have been something in the news about it.  You're either free to go, or you're not.

She is batshit crazy.

Exactly. Grow the fuck up.

She holds on to being the "good girl" who, all these years later, is still titillated by memories of watching porn and sunshine on her nipples while sunbathing topless.

She had alluded to it in passing for many years on the show but never fully explained it and then she finally named him. I wonder what kind of behind-the-scenes feedback she got.

Mika's daughter, Emilia posted pictures of her @ Mt Kilimanjaro.

The other day, Mika criticized the president's conduct at the G-7 and compared him unfavorably to her father.  She essentially said that her dad was an expert and Trump is not. Why does she continue to hide behind her father as some sort of proxy for her own policy expertise?  The lady is 50 and is still relying on daddy for her relevance.

It's not hard or even unreasonable to make that comparison, but if Mika ever demonstrated a hint of being as sharp or knowledgeable as her father, we wouldn't have legions of hatewatchers.  What's frustrating is that she does have the lineage and the education and the connections and the resources and the support to be very good at her job, and she chooses not to.

Her daddy was the only reason she ever had relevance.  Don't forget she was once considered valuable enough by the son of the President of Lebanon that he held her hostage,  chained her to a lounge chair in her bikini bottoms, and pried her eyes open ala Clockwork Orange and forced her to watch porn.

Fascinating take by the New Republic, ostensibly about Joe Walsh, but plenty of digs at our homeboy Joe:

Quote

It was enough for Scarborough to merely stop acting like Bill O’Reilly—a thing he did because a TV producer told him to—and start acting like Brian Williams, instead—again at the direction of a TV producer. (“You can cut out this regular-Joe crap,” MSNBC head Phil Griffin told Scarborough when he transitioned from phony populist everyman to phony genial political junkie. “Our audience is from Boston to Washington, D.C.”)

If Phil Griffin thinks his audience is from Boston to DC, he hasn't assessed his audience lately.

A few excerpts from a long article.

Quote

July 11, 2008
Morning in America

Despite his complaints about the hours, Scarborough lobbied hard for this job, which opened up in April 2007 when Don Imus made his ill-advised foray into color commentary of women’s college basketball. “Not to dance on anyone’s grave,” says Scarborough, “but the second I heard about Imus, I told my wife, ‘Honey, it’s gonna be a busy weekend.’ ” For the previous four years, he had been unmemorably hosting Scarborough Country, an evening show on MSNBC in which he came off as a B-team O’Reilly impersonator. But he’d always been convinced the format was the problem. “All of my executive producers had always told me the same thing: ‘We’ve got to get you off the prompter more-you’re best when you’re just talking off the top of your head,’ ” he says. Imus’s morning slot seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Scarborough spent a weekend at his Florida home and designed his own morning-show poster using Photoshop. He e-mailed the file to the Kinko’s on Columbus Circle and had a printed version delivered to MSNBC head Phil Griffin that Monday. It took the network six weeks to fill the slot, and it auditioned everyone (David Gregory, Tucker Carlson, Jim Cramer … Michael Smerconish?) short of Carson Daly’s cue-card guy. But Scarborough finally got the gig, and Morning Joe debuted last July.

The pre-noon Scarborough bears little resemblance to his prime-time self: the blustery former congressman from Florida’s “Redneck Riviera” who seemed a likely inspiration, along with O’Reilly, for Stephen Colbert’s conservative-blowhard character. On Morning Joe, shouting is discouraged, the teleprompter has been largely banished, and the overarching mood, despite an almost exclusive focus on the day’s political fisticuffs, is a chatty bonhomie. Scarborough has turned out to be more Katie Couric than Sean Hannity.

By the late nineties, Scarborough was losing interest in Washington. He began flying back to his district every weekend to play gigs with his band, Regular Joe. The chorus to one of his songs went, “We can’t change the world, we can’t change the world / Life’s a bitch and they can’t make me care.” He drank onstage “with regularity,” and his marriage broke up in 1997. (He married his current wife, Susan Waren, a former fund-raiser for Jeb Bush, in 2001.) A profile of Scarborough in the St. Petersburg Times from 2000 opens with a description of his Florida office, including the “empty Absolut vodka bottles” cluttering his “desk,” which was really a door atop a pair of sawhorses.

Scarborough came up with the format himself, convinced that it played to his strengths. The show’s leisurely, conversational tone has a drive-time-radio feel. The bookers balance out the usual suspects-MSNBC stalwarts like Matthews and Pat Buchanan-with quirkier choices not seen as often on cable: Frank Rich, Hendrik Hertzberg, John Ridley. Interviews run twice as long as similar segments on competitors’ shows, allowing room for both depth and digression.

And his co-hosts provide him with the opportunity for banter and improvisation that was missing from Scarborough Country. Willie Geist (son of longtime CBS News correspondent Bill Geist) sits in front of an open laptop, of late the de rigueur prop for cable election coverage, and fills the Jimmy Olsen slot. Mika Brzezinski (daughter of former national-security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski) reads the news and acts as a gentle liberal foil to Scarborough. There’s a flirtatious, Sam-and-Diane sort of chemistry to their sparrings. The two first worked together when Brzezinski did news breaks from New Jersey during Scarborough Country. “Whenever she tossed it back to me, she’d always say, ‘Now back to Scarrrrborough Country,’ ” he remembers. “I started to think, Damn it, she’s making fun of me.

I've noticed there is a lot less posting from us in the MJ threads.  When I can't even enjoy hate-watching all that much anymore...things are dire.  I don't know much about the ratings but I have to think if we are losing interest - how must the viewer feel who turns on MJ in the morning for news and opinion that hasn't been recycled many times.

I tuned in this morning and it was just dreadfully dull and repetitive...other than my remote landing on Clint Watts...my secret-agent-nerd-crush.  Same guests, exact same discussions for the last six months or so.  At least.

I think I read in one of the threads about not a whole lot of print reporters on anymore - compared to a year or so ago.  The Washington Post, I believe, decided to limit their reporters going on opinion shows.  Bob Costa has a show on PBS, I think; and he doesn't sensationalize or give a lot of off-the-top-of-his-head opinions - he seems to think before he speaks.  And he doesn't seem to do a lot of small-talk, unlike Jonathan Lemire.

I still don't understand why there was so much doubt about this. Digital equipment often malfunctions up there so most people bring old-fashioned cameras, which means they have to get their pics developed when they come home, like in the old days. She literally confirmed this on-air, saying their satellite phone broke down because of the cold.

I've been in a lot of bizarre employment situations and to me Mika is a type I've encountered over and over: unqualified, out of her depth - a person I don't respect professionally - but not necessarily someone I dislike personally. If she's such a terrible mother etc, why does she seem to be constantly hanging out with her daughters, going on vacation with them etc? They are adults, if they truly hated her they could cut all contact or reduce it to Christmas only. I have some experience with family feuds and manipulative parents and this ain't it.

I see every reason to believe she is out of her depth professionally, but no reason to believe she is a horrible human being who is a bad mother and lies about her vacation, etc., etc.  I've had tons of colleagues and students this is true of, and untangling the two strands is often exhausting but ultimately instructive.

"Batshit crazy", really? The way she described it on-air at the time sounded pretty realistic to me. A rich, entitled, proto-Epstein sort of arrangement, with the son of a head of state who himself had a, let's put it kindly, pretty sketchy reputation. He'd advertised for an au pair (wink wink), Mika's parents took him at face value, and when she got there, it turns out there were no kids to look after. Only a 30ish guy who tried to groom her by taking her to porn movies (as she described it, in the cinema, not at home) and weird shopping trips, at which point she, thankfully, realised something was off. God knows how many girls without her family/connections were manipulated, abused, raped etc. The story isn't offensive because it seems untrue, but because it seems totally realistic to a certain social stratum at a certain period in history. What's atrocious is all the girls out there without Mika's connections who were probably abused as well.

Mika & Joe did seem to be more subdued today.

I simply don't understand how Mika can promote herself as being the diva of "women's empowerment" while simultaneously providing air cover for Halperin's utterly shameful and disgusting behavior, which he is clearly not remorseful for (except to the extent it interferes with his ability to get back into the inner circle). He physically sexually assaulted these women and threatened their careers when they rebuffed him!!! How can she overlook that?

Then again, this is the same woman who cautioned other women to refrain from going out for drinks with male co-workers even as she planned her own wedding to one of hers.

And Mika wonders why the women wouldn't meet with him.

Re the Halperin story/soap opera.  He is a predator, has probably always been one because...he is an entitled, rich white male and always gave off that vibe  Even before he was outed.  But he is also truly unlikable in any context.  I didn't watch MJ for quite awhile because I could not stand to look at him with his mouth continually turned down.  The day he called Obama "a dick" should have been the final straw for him at MSNBC.  But The Gold Dust Twins just had to keep trying to redeem him.  As someone upthread stated...the good news is that maybe they don't have the network clout that they thought they had.  Bless their entitled hearts.

Absolutely, Kemper.  I worked in journalism, including TV, for a few years out of college.  The thing is that everyone in the entry level jobs is looking for an "in" to a higher level of pay because the entry level barely pays enough to fund even basic needs in NY or DC.  Halperin knew this and preyed on  young women's vulnerabilities. There is no redemption for him.

Joe and Mika should not help this arrogant predator.

Apparently the victims have no recollection of Mika reaching out.

I completely agree with you. It takes chutzpa to not even let MSNBC know that they were planning to work with Halperin on a project .

I am also baffled at why Mika was so adamant about defending Tom Brokaw.

Mika also said that Matt Lauer did not attempt to sexually harass her.

Today Mika ended a segment by speaking for a few minutes about, "Ladies, you know how men are great self promoters.  Men are so free and easy speaking about themselves.  Learn to be like them with KYV seminars.  We'll teach you to x, y, z..."

That is definitively anti-feminist, right?  It supposes that woman's natural position is inferior to man's and she needs an education to understand how to be more like a man.
Is it me?  Or is this insane?

There are so many things wrong with this, from inane, sexist assumptions about both women and men, to monetizing a skill set that you don't actually have!

That’s the whole premise of KYV and that’s why I find the whole program so offensive. It’s entirely based on her projecting her own insecurities onto all women, as if, by universalizing them she can make them less of a personal failure.

This was my reaction after reading that article.  If he has the stones to go after Griffin, I can't imagine how awful he must have been to those interns/newbies and what's even more revolting is that those two still want to pal around with him and rehab his image.  Unbelievable.

It's definitely not you.

When Jodi Kantor and the other author (sorry forgot her name, Emily something?) of the book about the MeToo movement were on, I thought for sure someone had the decency to realize they shouldn't have Mika in on the interview. Esp after that bombshell dropped yesterday about Halperin. But no, of course she'd insinuate herself into it.

If memory serves, wasn't Mika bad mouthing Christine Blassey Ford during the Kavanaugh hearings? And suggesting that good people were being brought down by allegations during the almost daily revelations that men at NBC/MSNBC were involved? "Good people" being friends of the show.

Mika  has stated that she (probably at Joe's suggestion but maybe not because she's just as tone deaf as he) tried to mitigate the destruction of Halperin's career by suggesting she moderate a KYV seminar between Halperin & his victims. And then she & Joe tried to go behind management's back to get him back on the show. And now "good people" Halperin is threatening those who stood in his path to a come back.

Once again, Meeks you pick the wrong horse to back.

No she didn't say anything about it today.  I fixed my comment so it's not so confusing.  I wonder if that's why she didn't actually conduct the interview, it looked like Elise & Willie were handling it from the studio. Mika just popped in with her comments a couple times.

I'm starting to wonder if Mika is somehow getting these women impregnated so that she has more KYV stories.  This is getting ridiculous.  Is there no one she won't use to promote herself?  If someone sneezes around her, does she run over screaming OMG are you pregnant?

I had a headache and stomach ache the other night, without Mika's sage advice, I would have never thought to take a couple Tylenol and a Sudafed, and gone to bed.

This whole thing weirds me out too.  I don't know how barfing in the bushes is a KYV moment.  I can't connect those dots either.  And as for why some of these young women are playing ball with her, I think we all had to be nice to people that probably made us want to throw up in the bushes to get where we wanted to go.  For some reason, Griffin just loves Joe because most bosses would have canned him and the missus after that Halperin podcast stunt.

Agree!!

Did I miss it or did Katy Tur get left out of the whole Mika KYV baby shower extravaganzapalooza?  She isn't a part of the Morning Joe family, so I guess Mika didn't give a shit that she had a baby.

I want to imagine Mika approaching her about doing a KYV article and Katy rolling her eyes and making an excuse about being busy with actual reporting but thinking "get the fuck away from me".

Katy Tur used to date Joe's arch enemy Keith Olbermann.

Keith & Joe used to get into arguments on air. Joe would often start his show with an attack on Keith for being a loudmouth.

Joe was gleeful when Olbermann left the network.

Mika & Joe have made it their mission to ensure that their friends seize control of all of the network's shows.

Joe used to brag that he got rid of the the show in the afternoon  on MSNBC with the millenials that supported Obama. One of the hosts was Toure !

The thought of Katy Tur (who is back starting today and looking fabulous) being asked to be one of Meek's KYV disciples is hilarious.  Katy would chew her up, spit her out and make Mr. Meeka clean up the place afterward.  And I'm glad Katy was spared the KYV baby treatment as I am sure she would have knocked herself out rolling her eyes.
