S04.E02: I Am Ashamed

Recommended Posts

Interesting new theme song. Shows how Rebecca is trying to move past being defined by men and her mental state.

Oy. You never should read the comments on any article. The Internet is so unforgiving. How DID they find out about Greg's dad?

I always thought the best part of Hocus Pocus was "I Put A Spell on You" but I guess that's just me. Yay at the Kathy Najimy cameo!

LOL at Rebecca materbating to gay porn.

Both Joshes were surprisingly cute with the baby.

The Cringe was very relatable.

I loved this so much. The song about Rebecca struggling to leave the house was super relatable. I used to have an awful job where I was having panic attacks every morning and I had a lot of days where I had to call in sick because I couldn’t physically leave the house.

Even for someone who isn't facing public shame, humiliation, and judgment, I could relate to Rebecca's constant procrastination. I think we all do that to an extent in one form or another (I remember I could always tell when my sister had a paper due because I would turn on the computer and the entire desktop was different - she would change the wallpaper, the fonts, everything) and it's gotten even easier now that we have the internet on our phones.

Also totally relatable was the cringe. I've said and done plenty of things that I remember and regret, and sometimes I actually cringe or flinch when I remember them because I'm so embarrassed. The skeleton Halloween-themed costumes for that number were cute too. Hahaha, the girl who said she hooked up with the Sugar Ray bassist!

Hector's reaction ("This is a murder house?!" and then "This is a POO murder house?!") cracked me up because I'm pretty sure I would have reacted the same way.

I loved that Josh loved the tiny koala costume so much that he just had to buy it.

That was more of "The Cringe," wasn't it?

I loved the running joke of Tim being stymied at every turn by his peach costume. Hee.

I'm a little surprised the show is spending so much time on Darryl and the baby. Also: Hubecca (or whatever her weird name is)? Oof.

Lots of call backs this week! Paula being suspicious of a new guy (I dont trust him), their apartment being a murder house, Valencia being convinced that ghosts are obsessed with her, all of the things that Rebecca did, etc. That was super fun, and I love how often the show brings back random things from past episodes.

I liked this episode a lot more than last week. The songs were more fun, and I liked checking in more with everyone else. The Cringe song was awesome, and so painfully relatable. Loved that it almost sounded like a sort of monster mash mixed with thriller.

Of course Rebecca spends hours masturbating to gay porn.

I thought that was a really great moment when Darrel's daughter AND ex told him he was a good dad. He just looked so genuinely HAPPY, like it was the greatest thing in the world. It's nice to see that portrayed positively.

On a related note, Josh was really cute with Heabecca. Maybe he just needs to find a sugar mama and become a stay at home dad. He'd actually be pretty awesome at that.

I'm pretty sure Rebecca knew silent partner guy from her borderline support group. In one scene he said he was one of the commenters. So I'm assuming he's the one who posted the stuff Rebecca was surprised anybody knew about, which is a huge horrible violation of trust.

Pretty sure it's either Hebecca or Heabecca (because it's Heather+Rebecca).

I agree, think silent partner guy is the one, and likely it will be explored further in future episodes. It may bring Rebecca and Nathaniel back together to bring him down. Once she finds out -look out. I loved this episode, from the spooky seance to Rebecca's procrastinating, and Darryl's overcompensation with the breast milk. And the end, with the four together and Rebecca still inclined to believe there was a ghost was precious.

Heh. "Concentration Camping." This episode is already funnier than the premiere. Hope it holds up.

ETA: "He lived in a sewer." "You mean Long Beach." Ouch! I live in Long Beach! ... that's fair.

ETA2: A few more chuckles this week than last, but still not a great episode. And Cringe was pretty cringeworthy.

I don't think there's going to be a reveal of who exposed Rebecca's past - this episode made a joke of pretty much a lot of people having access to the West Covina newsletter and also commenting on it. Almost immediately Rebecca accepted that well, everybody knew, including the boyfriend's dad part, and she had to cope, only she couldn't.

Still, this episode highlights that the show is missing an engine. Every episode, it has to re-set stakes from scratch, whereas the first 2.5 seasons the stakes were already established in every episode. Here, she learns everybody knows about her past, so she hides from it, and finally moves on. Ok. Now they need to set ANOTHER set of stakes. Whereas the first 2.5 seasons the premise was the gift that kept on giving. Stories could go anywhere, complicate, take a side trip, etc., but always return to the solidly established fundamentals. Now that's missing and IMO it's less interesting.

Did Darryl and Whijo reconcile last year? Sincerely, I may have missed it. My memory was they'd broken up and were in emotional limbo. The babysitting scenario left me questioning if they were a couple again or just pals.

I thought it was sweet that Darryl and his ex have hit such a friendly stage, and how reassuring she was about breastfeeding. I am also happy that there's less Darryl.

Nathaniel is a waste of time and seems tacked on. I really hate saying it because I truly hated Greg and I feel self-conscious about also hating Nathaniel, since I like Josh. I don't want to be self-serving and find reasons to dislike every love interest that isn't Josh. But the truth is I liked SMH when he first showed up, I thought he understood and fit into the tone of the show much better than Santino Fontana. But that ended fast. I have no investment whatsoever in him. With Greg, I felt his "love" for Rebecca was selfish, and all about his ego. I couldn't stand him, but in retrospect, I think my primary frustration was that the show presented him one way, but I was reading him another way. If I went with my read, it worked. To me, Greg was summed up with, "I gave you a UTI!" Rebecca was a hyper sexual woman who was not that interested in him, so she became his proving ground. It was very immature, reeked of the dreaded "Nice guy" syndrome, the guy who pretends to be your critic but in reality the only way you can prove your emotional stability to him is to accept HIM romantically, while he pretends he can take it or leave it. So that was Greg to me. AND he seemed older than the "gang" and the sort of person that would have a completely different set of friends. Yes, on paper I get why THEY were his friends, but I didn't feel it. But Nathaniel man, I'm not feeling the "I look conventional but am so broken inside." No you're not. You're fine. You ARE conventional.  And you wouldn't look at Rebecca twice, particularly since she has completely changed her look. It just feels phony.

Meh. I liked the season premier but this one didn't do much for me. Also, The Cringe felt positively tacked on to me.

They broke up because of the baby. Whijo wasn't ready to be a father, and didn't think he ever would be. But he did come see Darryl in the hospital when the baby was born in the season finale so they remained friends. Josh reiterated that they had broken up in this episode, so no, they aren't back together. Yet. I have a feeling they're headed that way though.

I liked this episode a lot more than the season premiere (especially The Cringe, which was perfect and brilliant), but: it almost felt like filler.  Had this episode showed up as Episode 6 or so, it would have been fine, but as the second episode of the season, when the first was (understandably) digging out from the hole they put themselves in at the end of last season? I was hoping that this would set up this season's arc and now I'm concerned that there won't *be* one.  Especially since

Spoiler

I read that they've done a new theme song for every episode this season.  Since those were always sort of a thesis statement for the season as a whole, I suspect that we're in for a whole lot of stand-alone episodes.

Unlike, apparently, most people, I enjoy watching Nathaniel. I think he's an interesting counterpoint to Rebecca. They're both self-absorbed and self-serving, but for different reasons and presenting differently. Nathaniel outwardly presents as "normal", for the most part looking and behaving in accordance with societal norms, with carefully moderated expressions of any emotions he might have.  Yet he seems to be guided ONLY by external expectations and how he can get what he wants by complying with them, and not by any internal moral compass. He seemed completely nonchalant about putting out hits on innocent people! Rebecca, on the other hand, is outwardly chaotic and scattered. She's a mess and everyone knows she's a mess. Yet she does seem to actually possess a moral center, wobbly though it might be. She cares about people and isn't indifferent to hurting them, she just has a hard time overriding her wild emotions and impulses.

I don't particularly care for him as a romantic interest, but I like it when he says things like "concentration camping". As far as office antagonists go, I find him more entertaining than Karen and her weird grossness.

Maybe Josh could be Darryl's nanny when he goes back to work.

Also, steam? In the sewer line? Making the floor shake? I'm no plumber, but that doesn't sound right.

Yeah, that was entirely absurd.

Maybe this is the setup for Rebecca's next real estate scandal/lawsuit. Because someone is lying here. How hot would the ground have to be for steam to form IN THE SEWER PIPE? Is this house on top of a volcano? Hey, maybe they could tap into this hot spring to get hot water for all the apartment dwellers with shady landlords. They could be taking fancy Los Angeles showers!

I liked this episode more than the previous one, again because all of the supporting characters (so many returning faces!) were a joy.  I continue to love Heather and Hector together (though I hope it wasn't a bad sign that Heather disapproved of Hector's choice for favorite scene in Hocus Pocus).  A couple details that stuck out to me: how Devin's poop on the walls recalled Rebecca's poop in her shoe.  And Burt calling Nathaniel "Son" at the end.  I always thought that Nathaniel would come to see Darryl as a father-figure, but now that Darry's busy with Hebecca, maybe Burt will play that role....

Did they force them to do a Halloween episode? The humor was better in this one but the real highlight was Patton Oswalt's song. I could leave the rest of it. I thought season 4 was the season when they promised they knew what they were doing. This is as bad/worse than season 3 so far.

ETA that as Darryl is more normal and also spending less time at work, I'm interested in the addition of Bert to the firm. They need some wacky characters again and it CAN'T be Maya.

I can't find the specific interview right now, but I think Bloom and/or McKenna said that they've wanted to do a Halloween episode.

I've been travelling and missing episodes.

Who's Bert? Is he the guy who was the prime witness in the apartment house water case?

My service provider doesn't do US TV on demand and none of the local Canadian stations have picked the show up this year.
