S08.E09: Playing Family Picnic

I HATE destination weddings. The only way they are acceptable is if the guests' airfare is paid for, or if the couple foregoes gifts to ease the finances on the guests. But don't tell me I have to buy engagement gift, shower gift, wedding gift, THEN pay for airfare and hotel to a place I might not particularly want to visit.

Rant over.

And Brianna, traditionally you get one shower. Be grateful instead of yelling at everyone including your grandma. You're the dum-dum who thought a club hook up was a real relationship, not her.

Exactly.  And she wants him to act normal around her family.  Did they even have time to establish a normal?  Would her family recognize normal if it crawled up inside of them?

Briana was a bad choice for this show.

Has anybody ever figured out how the coven manages to live in such a nice apartment and have good things? What kind of jobs do they do? I heard Brianna worked at an ice cream place or something, but someone must have a decent job to keep up their lifrstyle.

Brittany works full time (she finished her schooling) and Roxanne works full time.

With two adults working full time and one part time, even with Nova, if you're sharing housing costs incomes go a long way. That's why many people live in multi-generational households. They could perhaps afford to live alone but they consider that a waste of funds, and more practical to live together and have less space/privacy and use their money toward other things.

And considering they live in Kissimmee the rent cannot be that much even for a 3 bed 2 bath place.

I'm surprised David doesn't flaunt guns and military-grade weapons all over the place, along with axes. He seems the type for sure.

Considering Jenelle does her best to put on the faux family any chance she gets such as the family picnics photoshoot, telling Barb she should be acting more sane for the cameras, it wouldn't surprise me if any weapons are hidden when the cameras are around.

Quote

I can't put ALL of the blame for how her kids turned out on her ex.

No, but all the blame shouldn't fall on Barb either. Some of it is not so much fault as it is genetics. We know there is mental issues running in the family. That can't be helped when you conceive children. How you handle after they are diagnosed is another topic. Overall, Barb's marriage was a volatile one. Jenelle can't even offer an ounce of sympathy for what her mother had to endure during and after that relationship in order to survive. Even when their family home was on fire, there is Jenelle bitching in her book how her mother dared to make the mistake of asking Jenelle for help during that crisis. Ungrateful mutherfucking bitch.

Quote

would I want to yell and grab the camera from David too? Would it be understandable? Yes. But should I when I'm in a custody battle and a child is there? No. Would I be able to help myself? Not all the time, no.

We can sympathize with what Barb is dealing with and going through. It is understandable. Even I want to beat Jenelle's ass.

I keep forgetting that scene happened before the court hearing. I was wondering, why are they videotaping Barb? What are they hoping to get out of it? It just hit me when I read your post about them gathering "evidence" for court. If they even presented that at court, I hope the judge reprimanded those two assholes for that behavior and ripped them each a new butthole.

And Briana works at least part time. I don't think they live in a high income area so affording an apartment like that wouldn't be above their means with three working adults.

And the other, Melissa, had a baby in college. I remember reading her blog one time. She had a baby in college, but finished, so obviously she is not cut out of the same cloth as Chelsea. ?

I thought her story was interesting, because since her daughter, she has gone on to lose something like five babies. She wrote a lot in her blog about the pain she feels at every pregnancy announcement and pregnancy related event. Poor girl. She was truly born into the wrong family in that regard! I hope Chelsea has empathy and doesn't spout off about wanting fifty Coley babies when she's around her!

Yes.  Also, unprotected sex is like drunk driving.  Very few people intend to do it, but judgment is the first thing to go out the window when in an altered state.  Also, some of these guys just will not use a condom, because it's all about them.

I agree. I think Chelsea didn't see her future as being bright after high school, with likely not getting into college and maybe having to live at home, single. Marrying Adam and having a family while he worked to provide for her likely seemed an appealing option! We all know she had birth control and never took it.

Yes to all of this. I mean, it is pretty obvious to me that Barb carries a lot of her own baggage. We have no idea what her childhood and family life was like, we know her marriage sucked and she hasn't always picked the best men, she probably has her own mental issues, and she isn't the most educated or, to be quite honest, intelligent person in the world. I'm sure she was at time not that greatest mother, and perhaps Jenelle has a few valid gripes. However, Jenelle acts so self-righteous and nasty that I can't muster an ounce of sympathy for her. Sure, Jenelle is to an extent a product of nature and nurture, but at some point when you are an adult you are responsible for you're own  choices and behavior. If Barb was truly so terrible as a mother, one would think supposedly smart Jenelle (she save lives y'all) would use some self-reflection to try to go down a better path. I know I've had to do that regards to my childhood and the kind of parent I want to be, as I'm sure many do. Until she does that, she can kindly shut her mouth about her mother cause idgaf.

As for Chelsea and all her teen mom sisters-aren't the Houskas a lot more religious/conservative then they appear on tv? I remember a conversation we had in the forums about that possibility a while ago. I read Melissa's blog, she seemed pretty smart and together, and I think she did have some religious messages up. Honestly, I think the Houskas are quite a few steps above the Messer's but probably just as conservative about matters like sex/abortion/women's roles, etc. The Midwest isn't that far removed from the Bible Belt in that regard.

Yes, but why were they all SO desperate? Self esteem issues? I just don't get it. I had self esteem issues as a teen/young adult, but I would have been absolutely terrified to have unsafe sex. And I honestly also don't get the guys not putting on a condom. Why don't they care about themselves/their bodies (risks of diseases) or their futures? I hate to sound all self righteous but what messages do people hear that make this ok?

It could be any number of reasons.  I do know a young mind doesn't always see ahead in the future. They don't comprehend the consequences of their actions. Adults are guilty of this as well.

People from all walks of life have unprotected sex and have children without planning them.  Guys are notorious for not wanting to use condoms. I don't want to sound like I am generalizing as there are plenty of them who do use them. Lack of protection by both sides still occurs to this day. Look at Kail.

Teen pregnancy rates *are* on the decline, though, just not because of them watching TM. That's what gets me, and makes me laugh (darkly)--younger folks are playing it smarter while the TM girls are in many cases still making the mistakes of nearly a decade ago. And they were supposed to be the examples! Yikes.

I'm not sure younger folks are playing it smarter.  I found this article interesting, but the graphs about 2/3 of the way down are fascinating.

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/09/has-the-smartphone-destroyed-a-generation/534198/

Look at the one of the number of times teenagers go out without their parents, not to mention the number of 12th graders who drive.  I think if teen pregnancy rates are declining, it's because they never leave the house unless they're with their parents, and they have online friendships instead of in-person friendships, and it's awkward to end up pregnant in either of those scenarios.  Not to mention they're not driving, and having sex in the back seat while your mother is driving you somewhere is probably considered rude.

I was hanging out in the "I am Jazz" board and a lovely poster was expressing concern that her son never wants to date, and that when she was growing up in the 1970s it was a dating culture. I did explain to her some of the different cultural attitudes (talking, hooking up, dating, hanging out) towards dating now and if he's laughing aloud online that probably means he's talking to someone that makes him laugh (which is good) but hanging with friends in person is good too.

Granted the TM2 women haven't been teens for a LONG TIME (they are now 25-26) but I think (forgive me if my being an old fogey at 31) that the availablity of the internet and internet porn has given teens who are simply curious an outlet and they are engaging in PARTNERED sexual activity later than peers of previous generations. Of course I don't think internet porn is a great thing for sexual development- I told my Mom, "be happy you weren't a young person when internet porn and smart phones were starting out" (she's astonished at the unsolicited dick pics women receive), but waiting until you're 18-19 to engage in partnered sex isn't a bad thing.

And I say all this in bed, chatting with strangers about a tv show so who am I to talk?

You know, females have always had some kind of sexual advances made upon them in one way or another. At times it was criminal. Technology nowadays has allowed that same behavior to continue in a different way. Rather than guys rubbing up on you, they are sending dick pics. Instead of a guy trying to feel you up in a car, they are asking or manipulating girls into showing them their private body parts.

Speaking of technology, look at how Jenelle finds her soul mates of the month - Tinder. Social media has been her way of meeting the guys she has ended up with for the last couple of years. The bitch doesn't have to leave her damn house. I remember having to get dressed up, make sure the hair was on point, head out with friends to party and socialize with the hope of meeting a nice guy. Sometimes it would end up with me trying to fend off some ratchet dude at a party who would be slobbering all over me.

Beware the teenage girl who fashions herself "in love". It's like they have blinders on and earplugs in. When my oldest was 15-18, even though she had aspirations school and career wise, I would literally cringe when she decided she was in love with some loser guy. I swear I nearly had a breakdown trying to keep her from doing something stupid. She finally wised up after she went to college. And my husband and I are college educated and we live in a well off area. She is almost 30 now, an engineer married to an engineer . When we talk about her teen years, she shakes her head and claims temporary insanity. Oh those raging hormones! I cannot imagine what would have happened if I didn't have my husband on the same page as me, and if we didn't have the same tools at our disposal to keep her from doing something stupid. Kail really didn't have any parenting at all. The dynamic in the Janelle and barb household has never been good and frankly barb is limited in her ability to deal with a string willed child like Janelle. Leah lives in a place and has a family culture where having babies as a teen is acceptable so that's what she saw growing up. As for Chelsea, I have always suspected that the Randy and Lois Griffin breakup was awful. Not sure about the area they live in and what the norms are there.

Overall, it seems that teens are having less sex and using protection more. I personally believe the decline in abstinence only education has helped. Also, you can use the internet to educate yourself if your parents and school won't.  https://www.google.com/amp/amp.usatoday.com/story/419285001/

"Researchers at the National Center for Health Statistics, using new data of never-married teens released Thursday, found 42% of girls and 44% of boys between 15 and 19 years old had experienced vaginal intercourse.

Both rates have remained steady since about 2002, but are among the lowest levels in the nearly 30 years of national data on teen sex."

No thanks to MTV.

Briana - Maybe I am missing something but I am trying to figure out why Briana is so upset about her lack of a relationship with Luis. They aren't married, never dated and he was just a man at the club with whom she decided to have unprotected sex . How can he cheat on her if they were never in a relationship? Why does she think they should be some Leave it to Beaver family? If he has a relationship with the baby and helps financially support it, that should be enough. He isn't obligated to be Briana's man. She has already decided he will be a failure as a father based on Nova's dad behavior.

It's obvious Briana did not want another baby but refuses to put any blame on herself for her own stupid actions. She seems checked out from this pregnancy. I think Briana was likely somewhat depressed before she got pregnant with Stella. She comes across as such a sad sack complainer that I wonder if this is just her personality.

Briana's mom rubs me the wrong way. I did not like the hard push for adoption when it was obvious Briana seemed to be using adoption as a way to get Luis. I get she doesn't want Briana to continue to struggle with another potentially absent baby daddy but maybe if she could convince her daughter to stop having unprotected sex this would not even be an issue. I swear Briana and her mom just come across as unhappy Chicken Littles. The sky always seems to be falling in that house.

@MakingBacon (love your name by the way), not disagreeing with you at all but it seems like Brianna and Luis were in the exact situation as Corey and Leah- they met, had sex the first night (or within a few days/weeks of knowing each other), kept seeing each other for a while and then Brianna discovered she was pregnant a short time later.

I don't agree on how Brianna has been acting but she and Luis did agree to be in a monogamous relationship, notice Luis never claims "I didn't cheat I wasnt your man." He wanted to have his cake and eat it too (trust if Brianna had even been TALKING to another guy there would be hell to pay), while it was good Brianna said it was silly to continue a relationship with him after that (pregnant or not), that's a reason why you don't get pregnant by someone you've known a hot minute.

IMO the fact that he has a child that he isn't supporting and doesn't make an effort to contact (yes she lives out of state, but even if he was supporting her the teeniest bit he would be defending himself- I notice that blank stare when Roxanne brings that up), is more of an indication on how he will be with this baby than anything Devon has done. Again not making excuses on how Brianna has carried herself but I don't think Brianna is wrong regarding what kind of father Luis will be. And in real time he isn't doing much so.....

I think I found the apartment complex where the coven lives.  Nice place with lots of ammenities.  Also to to the east away from all the Disney and Universal tourists.  If anyone is interested the complex is named Rapallo.  MTV has shown enough establishing shots of the buildings for Briana's scenes for it to be recognizable on apartment rental listing sites.  I guess I was too unoccupied this morning and needed an uninteresting mystery to solve.

@StatisticalOutlier I'm 31, so an old millennial but a millennial- I think my generation was the first that embraced the "everything but vaginal intercourse" meant you were a virgin (for hetero-couples). I never embraced that logic (for personal reasons) but a lot of my friends did. Again as a baby boomer my mom was astonished, in her head certain sexual intimacies were reserved for your husband or life-partner and weren't a "precursor"  to vaginal intercourse.

I do think this generation isn't afraid of STIs the way Gen X was and the dangers HIV transmission is ignored by young people unless you're LGBT (which is an awful thing).

@Lm2162 I agree with you on so much. Men like to wax poetic about how they hate condoms, and I'm sure some do, but in my limited life experience I have never had a man choose NOT to wear one if that meant he wasn't having sex with me (not that I think I'm a special snowflake or anything). If a man won't wear one don't have sex with him!

Of course I am not speaking of instances of rape and sexual violence which does occur in dating relationships (and I think there should be more discussion that a boyfriend/husband/friend can rape you and that's wrong and illegal and not the other person's fault- we are getting better at that but not enough).

Briana wanted Luis to commit to her.  It is all or nothing. It is why I believe she is so deeply annoyed at him. At the very least, she wants to promote this loving happy family. Much like Jenelle does with her damn photos. When Luis told her he found an apartment 30 minutes away, she was upset because she likely expected him to tell her he found an apartment and he wanted her to move in with him.  Making that phone call to Luis and telling him to put on an act as if they are a couple was pure desperation. She doesn't want her extended family to know they are not together because she looks bad for being pregnant with a "second loser baby daddy", but it is ok to go on national television and tell the world how you met at a club and an hour later you both were doing the deed without any protection? This girl drives me batty.

Again I'm not watching any of this stuff, so I could be wrong, but something just occurred to me. Won't the reunion show this year be REALLY weird because of this literal fifth wheel? She's the only ne who's not making any real money, whose situation has not markedly improved, who hasn't had a ton of surgeries, who isn't hawking products...not to mention she doesn't have the same tattoo as everyone else. It seems like it'll be almost awkward enough for me to watch.

I looked at their website and noticed a 3 br/2 ba starts at around $1700, which I'm assuming means a first floor unit with no upgrades. That's actually a little pricier than what I would've expected for their family, especially when you factor in cable, utilities, car payments, insurance etc. Roxanne and Brittney must have decent paying jobs, because I'm sure Briana isn't paying an equal share.

It seems up there in price to me too.  I don't know what Luis does for money, but even 1 br starts at a little under $1,100.  The coven expected him to live there too I think.

Here in my area (So California) a 3 br/2 ba apartment would cost over $2500 per month. At the very least. Anything cheaper would be questionable living quarters. It is the price one pays for living on the coast.

Orlando is a weird place.  Lots of low paying jobs with the tourism industry but housing can be pricey.  Most people have to have roommates so it isn't surprising the coven live together like they do.  I've known so many people who go out there to work at Disney or Universal and the Orlando area is a hard place to survive.  One couple I knew was living in a 3 br apartment with 2 other couples (rent split 6 ways) and they were barely surviving.   My husband's cousin got a marine biology degree and took a job at Sea World.  Poor thing was living with multiple roommates and she ended up having to quit and go back home because she just couldn't afford it.

The coven is actually doing really well for the Orlando area.  I never watched Teen Mom 3 so I don't know where they lived before.  Maybe this place is an upgrade since they got the TM2 gig.

I believe they were in a townhouse. I don't know much about the Kissimmee area, but it could be they wanted to be in a nicer neighborhood for Nova, but couldn't afford the rent on a single family home. Nova goes to a charter school, so it seems like despite their flaws, the Coven is invested in giving her a good education and upbringing.

To clarify my earlier statement, $1700 in the big scheme of real estate prices isn't a lot, but for a family who had to rely on WIC and Food Stamps when Nova was born, it seems a little high. Maybe Brittney finishing school and getting a decent job gave then the extra cash they needed to upgrade, but Briana can't be making much more than minimum wage. I don't know how she affords it.

Here in my area (So California) a 3 br/2 ba apartment would cost over $2500 per month. At the very least. Anything cheaper would be questionable living quarters. It is the price one pays for living on the coast.

Holy cow! In my little corner of Texas a 3/2 apartment could be 800-1200.00.  We desperately want to move to Washington Dtate but the cost of living is insane compared to Texas. It's super frustrating since we have grown tired of the heat here. If only we could just pack our house and land up and take it with us. Lol

With the three of them (The coven) possibly paying that much rent do you think they make that much at their jobs? Or has Texas spoiled me?

To clarify my earlier statement, $1700 in the big scheme of real estate prices isn't a lot, but for a family who had to rely on WIC and Food Stamps when Nova was born, it seems a little high. Maybe Brittney finishing school and getting a decent job gave then the extra cash they needed to upgrade, but Briana can't be making much more than minimum wage. I don't know how she affords it.

I don't think they HAD to relay on WIC and Food Stamps when Nova was born. I think as an unemployed single mother Brianna qualified for them so she got them. If they hadn't veen available I don't think Nova would've lacked for any of the things she currently has (nor do I think the family would've struggled to put food on the table although things would've been tighter). I do agree though that going from 1 working adult to 2.5 working adults improved their financial situation a lot. Plus whatever little money Brianna made from reality tv like Family Therapy etc.

@Mkay I think TX has spoiled you. Housing prices are ridiculously low in the south, especially given the square footage and quality of the neighborhoods for the low monetary cost.

I'm in a brick 3/2 in the country with acreage.  I've looked at houses in the PNW in our same price that when looking at the pictures, the house had no walls. Ha! I learned real fast to up our price range by at least 100,000.

Texas has some of the lowest housing costs in the country! Where I live, a decent 2-bedroom/2 bath is easily $3,000 a month. Before marriage I lived with a roommate in a 1700/mo 2-bedroom/one bath apartment in an awful neighborhood in a very lackluster complex with only one parking space. It was considered a steal.

That place looks pretty nice. I'm wondering why they didn't just use the complex's clubhouse (or whatever) to host the baby shower???

Because all the other teen mothers had it booked up for their baby showers.

Or these girls were desperate to keep the guy and did a Kail - trap babies. I have always felt Chelsea wanted a baby as a way to get Adumb to commit to her. They could have been given all the talks in the world, but if they were wanting to keep a guy, nothing matters.

I've been desperate to keep a guy during my teenage years but it never occurred to me to get knocked up because that's fucking crazy.  Nor did any of my friends get knocked up.  Nor did anyone I knew, frankly.  I stand by my assertion that 3 out of 4 daughters getting pregnant as teenagers = you're doing something wrong.   Hell, you'd think after the FIRST one you'd take the other three to the doctor and get them the shot (Chelsea wasn't the brightest bulb as a teenager, I wouldn't trust her to take the pill.)  I'm incredulous that anyone would consider that situation an example of good parenting.

Yes.  Also, unprotected sex is like drunk driving.  Very few people intend to do it, but judgment is the first thing to go out the window when in an altered state.  Also, some of these guys just will not use a condom, because it's all about them.

That's why you get them the shot.  Or IUD.  Or some other form of birth control they can't fuck up.  That's the thing about pregnancy: it's totally avoidable.  I'm seriously flabbergasted people here seem to think that situation is normal.

You're right.  Anyone who cares about their teenage daughter should be horrified at the situation, because it puts the poor girl under so much stress and will have a major impact on her future.

I am not seeing where anyone mentioned it being normal or good parenting. We don't know what happened behind closed doors. We don't know how Randy and his wife reacted to the situation. Not everyone has to display their anger for years, and in public in order to show they are upset at situations their children created. We don't know what they said to their daughters or how they chose to handle it.

We may not have been desperate to want to become pregnant. Some girls and even some guys do at a young age. How I made choices as a young person, I can't put on someone else. Besides, it was just my assessment of what I think happened to these girls. I certainly don't know if they were all desperate. Heck, I don't even know what their relationships were like with the fathers of their babies. I can only form an opinion on Chelsea because of what I have viewed on this show.
