Cricket, I am just devastated to hear your news. I truly know what you're going through; I lost my husband at the age of 52 to pancreatic cancer. A truly horrible thing to have to go through, but sadly, all too common these days.

I wish you love, strength, and peace as you go through this.

Overall they didn't have the foods I wanted, the foods I'm accustomed to, the garage sale style shopping, no cart, no bags, no service, no meat, no dairy, no frozen items I want, only saved a bit on produce I had to pick over. I went back a 2nd time to see it with fresh perspective thinking I had judged it too harshly the first time. Nope. I don't want to go back. 

Aldi ads make it seem like a great place. The one near me doesn't come close to measuring up. 

Uh-oh.  This is what I'm afraid of.  I've never been - there are several in our area, maybe 20 minutes away.  I just haven't felt like adding another store to my routine.  They are opening one here in my town and when it opens I'll give it a try.  I never felt that it would replace my current grocery store, but maybe that I could get some different type items - and I have heard from friends that the chocolate is really good.  We'll see...............

I've been to Aldi's and even though you bag your own groceries and pay 25 cents for the cart (when you return it the quarter comes back) I do like the different kind of food you can get there. The warehouse feel doesn't bother me.

The whole no-frills idea of shopping at Aldis takes some getting used to, but when you realize that their generics and German-made goods are, for the most part, just as good as the brand name items we have here you begin to truly appreciate the cost savings over the typical gricery store.

I first got introduced to Aldi during my stint as chief snack provider to my sons' little league teams.  Another mother clued me in.  We had a budget for snacks for the kids, but it was modest, and at Aldi we got a lot more stuff fir the money.  Once I sampled a few of things I was buying, I was blown away.  They were so much better quality than I anticipated.

I got so attached to Aldi that I would go there first, then visit the big chain store to finish off my list.

And add me to the list of those aporeciating the excrllent German holiday goodies..  Very like mein grosmutter used to bake when I was little.

Avoid the cheese and the canned tuna and you can't go wrong.

We went to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston yesterday to get another opinion on Joe’s colon cancer.It has spread to his liver with two new spots showing after his surgery done in July. The first two types of chemo, which should have had an effect on it, has not.   We’ve been told it is a very aggressive form, which leads us to think he hold a defective b-raf gene. 3 times a piece of tumor has been sent out, all coming back as inconclusive… of course they bill me $1,500.00 a pop.( Wanna guess when they will get paid?) I have to conclude that he does in fact have this gene which is why he is not responding as expected. Another sample is being sent to a different lab, and blood work for a specialized test that can pick up the defective gene now in blood. Can only imagine how much that will cost me that will never get paid either. At any rate, the specialist in Boston said the doctors here in Glens Falls are doing the correct treatment and he started on a new chemo last Monday, however it is not as strong as the first two. IF it works, they would like to see some shrinkage of the lesions. The hope was to keep it at bay, but it is not curable. Which means, best outlook, about 18 months. He hugged me and cried that he was sorry… which I know refers back to the fact he always refused colonoscopies when I told him he should have one. I cannot tell you how broken I am now. I expected to retire and live to old people together… his father is 94 and his mom is 89 and still in good health. How can this happen to him? This morning he said we need to find a shelter to take our beloved horse that we have had since 1995 – the year my dad died of colon cancer. I could go on and on about how devastated, angry and betrayed I feel but I will spare you all of that.

This is why I have not posted.. my “nv” the other day was just my computer sending something  - some how – on my behalf.

To all of you who have sent us good wishes and prayers, I thank you so very much. I don’t have to tell those here who are cancer survivors, how damn lucky you are and I am so glad you are and wish you continued good health.

I was so sorry to read this.  Know that both you and Joe are in my thoughts......and I believe in miracles!

Does anyone else have Lidl in their area? They’re apparently the competition to Aldi. We have a few of them opening in our area. They’re also German owned. I was in one a few months ago. They have a fresh bakery with donuts and other goodies and their produce area wasn’t too bad. The first one in VB is on the other side of town, so I’ve only been once. I’m quickly becoming a fan of Aldi. We’ve had two open in our area this year. Once I got used to the cart thing and bringing my own bags, I was fine. I’m just not a fan of their meat department. I prefer Kroger or the Commissary for meat.

I didn't know you get your quarter back. Nothing was explained to me. There were only 5 carts in the holding area. Inside, no one had a cart. It was weird.

Never been to an Aldi. Have read that they do that with the carts to make people want to return them and not just leave them wherever in the parking lot.

The part of MS that I'm in is one of the most densely populated areas yet we still don't have anything like Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Aldi and etc...

Would love more grocery store variety here.

We're getting an Aldi in my neighborhood too. It's a brand new shopping center, and the grocery store was supposed to be a Fresh Market, but for some reason they pulled out of their lease. Aldi will take over the space. I've never been in one and I suppose I will check it out, but I'm firmly wedded to my large chain grocery store that I shop in weekly. Their prices are good, the variety is huge, they double coupons, they have a ton of their own digital coupons, and almost every week in their circular, they have a coupon for $8.00 off if you spend $75 or more. I like one-stop grocery shopping. My late father-in-law used to compare prices and go to different stores to get the best deals - produce here, meat there, that store was having a sale on detergent, etc. Not me - get 'er all done in one store, one trip.

I am going to try Aldi's now. I have a lot of choices where I am. The local chain is excellent. Prices a bit high but not that bad, especially if you shop the sale items and try and stock up. We also have Giant Eagle, which bought out Tops years ago. I really don't like it - and I think prices are high. We also have Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Aldi's. Aldi's is a bit farther for me to drive, but I am looking to trim my food bill a bit. Oh, and we have Costco. I used to make fun of Costco, but I started shopping there with my mother-in-law, and I was converted. They have some cool stuff. Back when I had three kids at home, it made more sense. I have a tendency to take stocking up too far (i.e. we don't want to become a hoarder, now, do we?) so I haven't shopped there in over a year. Plus it was a whole "ordeal." I had to gird my loins, so to speak, before going there. I would come home with mountains of paper towels, tissues, snack foods, nuts, dried fruits, oh my all kinds of stuff. 

I used to live in Rochester, NY, home of Wegmans. I believe it often wins Top Grocery Chain, maybe for it's size category, on a national level. That's a whole other post!!

The hubby was in the Gulfport/Pascagoula area earlier this year when the ship was being gutted/repaired after their last deployment. While we’re in SE Virginia, Mississippi was definitely a bit of a culture shock. He wasn’t all that impressed with the grocery chains down there and mostly stuck with Walmart.

When you click the cart back into the holding area the quarter pops out. They do this to save on hiring someone to fetch the carts in the parking lot.

I had the same feeling when I was traveling with some friends through Oklahoma. We were going to a trade fair outside of Oklahoma City. When we crossed into Oklahoma the buildings were out of the 1950's. Most areas weren't updated or modernized. It was like walking in an old movie set. The fair grounds and buildings had been built in the 1950's, street lamps, stores, etc. We went into a grocery store. The shelves were about 5 feet high. Aisles were 4 feet or more wide. Not much variety of canned goods nor food in general. I wish I had photos but this was back in 1996 and I had no idea. I don't want to offend Oklahomans, maybe it's just the places we were going. 

I do remember we were all excited to see a Wendy's. We had dinner there.

I love, love Wegmans ! I don't have one in my town, but they are all around me, and it's worth the trip once in a while. They have such a variety of foods, if I had one in my town ,I would be 300 lbs. LOL.

I went to Aldi's today! I enjoyed it. Didn't see too many holiday goodies yet. I did see some chocolate bars, and I bought some Knoppers crispy hazelnut wafer bars. YUM!! I picked a smattering of items to try - green onions, baked beans, Brussel sprouts, lasagna noodles, ricotta, ketchup, macaroni and cheese, pasta sauce ... all brands I didn't know. They had Pumpkin Spice Cheerios for $2.49 - we just finished a box - they are pretty good, and I'm not a pumpkin spice freak. I have always liked cinnamon and all the spices that go with it, so by definition I like "pumpkin spice". Just not pumpkin spice EVERYTHING. I also picked up a frozen gyro "kit" - since moving to the Cleveland area, I have been digging them every now and again - might fix for dinner tonight. Comes with the meat, the bread, and the tzatziki  sauce (my boyfriend and I are immature, and we call it "titty sauce"). Also bought a large pumpkin for $4. Would have been $10 at Heinen's, our local chain. I shop mostly at Heinen's. The local store is pretty small, which I prefer at this point in my life.

I LOVED Wegmans. I knew I would miss it terribly when I moved, and I did. I eventually got over it, for the most part, lol. I have been back in the last six months, (my paramour lives in the Rochester area) and it is still The Bomb, but the newest stores are YUGE. Like ginormous. It was like, crazy, man. I used to live near one of the older, smaller ones, and I loved the size, loved everything about it. They built a Super Wegmans around the corner from the old one. It's wonderful, almost a village unto itself. Just makes the whole shopping thing more of an Ordeal. And I get overwhelmed at times by the sheer selection of items. And all of the prepared foods!! 

Anyway, back to Aldi's - thanks for all the info on it - I appreciate it!! I had fun, and it felt like you guys were with me :)

I get all of my proteins from a CSA that makes home deliveries all winter. (No fish or seafood). I have a bread guy who has periodic sales in the winter.  We have an upright freezer, so I stock up once a month.  I do about half of my shopping at a Trader Joe's.  we have a good local market for organic produce and specialty items.

Regarding Aldi, we have one near us, but I haven't been in years. I might try it over the holidays.

I shop at Aldi for staple items and have been pleased so far. They have a sliced Italian bread which is not doughy which we love. If I weren't already in the bed I would check the name but lazy woman that I am I don't want to go downstairs to see.

I do agree the cheese is not good. Yogurt is great though and 33¢ at my store. My grandson likes their orange juice better than name brands too. Plus the things I get which are not available elsewhere around my smallish city make it fun to shop.

My 12 year old loves going to Aldi with me. He’s a cart pusher and he likes that it’s a smaller store. He always likes to bag the groceries for me and he likes to retrieve the quarter when he puts the cart away. He prefers it to Kroger since I like to walk every aisle (we have a Kroger Marketplace that is the size of a Walmart SuperCenter).

2) I really wish the Medicare enrollment period didn't end so soon.  I would love to hear the dulcet tones of the guy in the Humana informercial for as long as possible.  SAID NO ONE EVER!  Ack!

Watching All In The Family reruns on LogoTV.  This episode is season 9 from 1979.  What floored me, is that in a conversation between Archie and Edith, she refers to him being 55 years old!  Holy crap!  Is that really what 55 yr. old working class men (and women for that matter) looked like in the late 70's?  Geezus.

Lol. All in the Family. I remember my Dad would sit down and watch, which was a rare thing - he was not the kind of guy that sat and watched TV as he wasn't into sports, and most of the stuff was "junk." It was amusing to me, as in some ways, Archie reminded me of my father - his gruffness, for sure. My mom was a bit like Edith, in that she was always trying to placate Dad, to keep him on the jolly side. Looking back, what a great show, what a great cast. "Gee our old LaSalle ran great," - took me forever to figure THAT one out!!

I tried Clancy's Ranch-style tortilla chips last night - I have been munching and crunching everything in site as the cooler weather sets in - hoping they would be good - Dang!! they were just fine. This morning I poured some Friendly Farms milk in my coffee. HOW FRIENDLY ARE THEY, HUH??? 

Daughter tells me THIS MORNING that her Latin teacher is having the kiddos bring in cereal to eat - she provides the bowls and milk, lol. It is Block Day today - the classes are 90 minutes. Good thing I bought TWO boxes of Pumpkin Spice Cheerios at Aldi's yesterday. I had already opened box numero uno and had begun munching on THAT ONE. Daughter has a bunch of red hair, so I gave her the box and decided to call her Pumpkin Cheerio.

According to some quick online research, Carroll O'Connor's actual age in 1979 was 55, and he was 47 when he first portrayed Archie Bunker.

Watching All In The Family reruns on LogoTV.  This episode is season 9 from 1979.  What floored me, is that in a conversation between Archie and Edith, she refers to him being 55 years old!  Holy crap!  Is that really what 55 yr. old working class men (and women for that matter) looked like in the late 70's?  Geezus.

This is sort of a running joke with my mom and I. I’m barely 40 and she’s in her early 60s. She texted me last year and told me that I was the same age as Olivia Walton. I texted back that she was the same age as the Golden Girls. People definitely look younger these days. LOL

Walgreens just announced that they are setting up to close 600 some stores, mostly Rite-Aid stores.  Makes sense if they're self-competing, but will still cause hardships for customers & employees.  Too bad.  Everything in retail is contracting, and will probably continue.  I don't know what is going to happen to unskilled labor in this country.  Scary thing.

It is concerning.  I have a lot of friends in the service industry.  They make good money but no benefits and bad hours.  I also wonder about their long term financial security.

I really like the Volkswagen commercial with Joe Cocker's version of With A Little Help From my Friends as the couple are driving to Woodstock.  They got the clothes and everything just right.

So Carrie Ann Inaba has jettisoned or has been jettisoned by her 3rd fiance' in 10 years, about a month ago.  Wonder what her deal is.

I was really surprised to learn that she was engaged at one time to Artem.  For a couple of reasons.

I was thinking the very same thing! It always annoys me when TV shows, movies, or commercials have some millennial's version of what they think we wore/looked like. Whoever set up this commercial got it exactly right. Refreshing!
