DearEvette March 6, 2016 Share March 6, 2016 Ok I re-watched the episode paying attention to the THO/Pandora parts. And it makes more sense on re-watch. I am now wondering what happened to THO's brother and believe that we might just meet him. I still think the symbol Abbie sees has something to do with him and may not necessarily evil. In the Greek mythology version of Pandora's Box, when she opened her box and unleashed all the evil crap onto humanity, one thing stayed behind: hope. Since the symbol appeared to Abbie on the wall after her being in the catacombs for awhile I wonder if it represents something that could be used to combat the other contents of the box? THO's brother was actively siphoning all the bad stuff into the box so I am wondering if this is his symbol. He certainly seems more 'Good' than THO, relatively speaking. [Jessie Jackson voice]I'm keeping Hope alive![Jessie Jackson voice] that Abbie isn't being lured the dark side. 2 Link to comment

I worry about the symbol being evil--and that it is somehow infecting Abbie with its evil. Every once and a while she'll throw an evil side eye. I'm glad she finally opened up to Crane about it. I loved the brunch scene and the two Ichabbie scenes. When they were sitting near each other on the couch, and Crane reached for Abbie then pulled back, I was all, "Just kiss already. Dang." The MOW and Pandora/THO were big snooze fests, once again. I actually liked the actor playing Leeds, but his Demon costume and makeup were horrible. Every time he was on screen, I felt like I was watching a scene from "A Mid-Summer's Night Dream." 1 Link to comment

vanarnd1 March 6, 2016 Share March 6, 2016 I liked the episode overall, as others have said the subtle Abbie/Crane moments had very good acting from Nicole and Tom and we really saw a change in Abbie's demeanor, a realization that she needs help. This is the kind of episode that really highlights the Ichabbie chemistry and how they could be as a pairing. I was liked Leeds as a villain, he had more personality and backstory than most of the MOTW we had seen. He could have been interesting as a recurring bad guy if they had gone that route. I wasn't as much into the other parts though Like has happened over the last few weeks, the HO/Pandora was not made either character look good. I am hoping we see a split between them soon. And the Joe/Jenny stuff felt forced and took up too much of the episode. I think they could have fit in Daniel/Sophie to balance things out a bit. next week's episode looks intense though and hopefully will move the storyline along. 2 Link to comment

[Jessie Jackson voice]I'm keeping Hope alive![Jessie Jackson voice] that Abbie isn't being lured the dark side. The only problem is that the brother was still using the evil - that's where he got his power... he siphoned it off to create the sands. And all of humanity was enslaved by the other brother too - I think there was no good or evil - just power and the brother had more of it than THO. The brother and the other gods forced THO down into the catacombs - that's how he became The Hidden One. Also - the symbol was on the catacombs that belonged to or were the domain of THO, so I still think there is something shady about it. I did like your "at the bottom of the box was hope" part though... I just couldn't get past the fact that all of humanity was enslaved anyway. I think humanity was right to "betray" THO when Pandora got him out - no doubt he would have done the same thing to them that this brother did. 1 Link to comment
TaurusRose March 6, 2016 Share March 6, 2016 Having re-watched Dark Mirror, the parts that made no sense to me at first (goat-scorpion man and THO/Pandora back story) played better the second time around. I agree that Leeds was an entertaining monster, but does SH ever keep monsters around for very long? No? Okay, moving on then. THO's plan may not seem all that interesting, but I have to admit he cut a fine figure in his new duds. And I'm hoping that there will be some kind of pay-off to this s/l by the end of the season, otherwise it will be another head-scratcher, waste of time (like CFD). I must say that I like the idea of Joe using some of his "flood" money to get Crane an expensive lawyer and a bespoke suit to fight his immigration status. Speaking of which, I love how Jenny reads Crane and how she noted his frame of mind did a 180 once Abbie was present. Suffonsified? I had to look that up. LOL 2 weeks without SBR?! We must be living right. I missed Sophie; Danny, eh. But this story didn't really need them. LOL'd at all the shade thrown at Benjamin Franklin. Show, you need a wig budget. What the hell was that on Leeds' head? Things I liked, don't know why but I did...Crane chauffering Abbie around, Abbie insisting Crane take the lead in going into a dark, scary lair. I really could have done with a longer edit of the final Ichabbie scene. Abbie was adorable (even though she was suffering) and if they had stayed with them, I'm sure Crane would have hugged her. Damn it, Crane, hugging is permitted!!!! Although a lot of the concentration on Abbie and her symbol has been squarely put in Abbie, I am glad that this episode pulled some of the focus onto Ichabod. It is gratifying to know that even though Abbie thought she was hiding stuff, that Ichabod and Jenny weren't being fooled at at all. Ichabod is not dumb and I am glad the show not only didn't make Abbie secret this long lasting thing, but that it also didn't underestimate Ichabod. Even in the throes of dying he realized immediately that the symbol was of significance to Abbie. THIS. Nicole Beharie acted her ass off in that scene....Also Tom Mison was equally excellent in that scene. His body language was perfect. First the coat flip to sit down(!!) but also and the tension in his body, he seemed to be yearning to offer comfort but held himself back because he needed to give her space. These two are the TRUTH. And THIS. When Crane finally takes the monster down with a knife to his back, something that actually worked when all those bullets did not, did he take the time to cut off Leeds' head and/or the scorpion tail? No, let's just stand around talking instead. So Leeds comes back to life and, in the final stand off, Abbie and Crane AGAIN point their useless pistols at him. GAH! To be fair, Leeds struck hit Crane with his tail and Ichabod started feeling the effects of the venom immediately, also Leeds knocked Abbie out, so IMO the fight in the laboratory doesn't reflect poorly on Team Witness. 2 Link to comment
phoenics March 6, 2016 Share March 6, 2016 I too wished that the final Ichabbie scene had been longer - I wanted Crane to hug her or at least take her hand and squeeze it. Frozendiva March 6, 2016 Share March 6, 2016 I was impressed with Leeds' inventions - modern 'film' wasn't invented til Edison invented the kinetoscope in 1891 and the phonograph in 1878. Leeds combining both sound and vision about 100 years previously was interesting. His genetic mutations were also interesting in that he could grow a scorpion tail and have goat features. I don't know if it was realistically possible at the time. He certainly was ahead of his time. Perhaps a good twist would have him be a time traveller. The Hidden One maybe needs to study social media and its various addictions. He may find it much easier to enslave humans through current technology. Humans have come a long way since his time when gods or what appeared to be gods were worshipped. He may face a tough sell without a lot of death and destruction. Abbie talking to Crane about the symbol and what she is experiencing is good. Crane had better watch out for INS finding him. Or needs to reschedule his citizenship interview. The ep's theme of boundaries was notable in the difference between Jenny and Abbie. Perhaps Corbin's plan would have been better if he had offered to go shopping with Jenny for a new home or to use the money he has to fix up the place for her - with no strings or anything attached. Because he wants to. 3 Link to comment

MissAlmond March 6, 2016 Share March 6, 2016 (edited) Joe Webb (one of SH's writers) tweeted answers to a couple of questions some have had. Once he learned from Nevins last ep that his dad wasn't complicit, there's less impediment to using it. #SleepyHollow And whoever posted Pandora seemed fed up, was on target: Joe Webb @JoeWebb13 Mar 4 Really strong performance by Shannyn Sossamon in that last scene. Without saying a word, you can see Pandora's rage simmering. #SleepyHollow Take him down, Pandora! Oh and apparently a lot of the BTS SH people want Jenny's trailer when the show is said and done. 2 weeks without SBR?! We must be living right. Don't get too comfortable. I'm sure she will return. IMO, Betsy Ross is the biggest mistake of S3. Zoe, I understood, Daniel, I understand even though both characters bore me immensely. But while I know BR is there for a purpose, not only does her character bore me but Nikki Reed (who, I admit, does seem a good sport and team player) is - as Goldie Hawn said of Meryl Streeps' character in Death Becomes Her - a bad actress. Helena Dax March 6, 2016 Share March 6, 2016 (edited) I feel like Ichabbie is unstoppable now. Every episode is one step in the right direction. What she did, asking for help, was huge and I'm sure Ichabod won't disappoint her. I see some parallelism between Ichabod in S2 and Abbie in these last episodes. I mean, last year Ichabod put the bond at risk because of his wife and son and now, Abbie almost let him die. (And she should have told him what was going on). Of course, I'm not saying they're exactly the same situations, but I remember people saying that in order to forgive Ichabod, they needed to see her dealing with personal problems and Ichabod helping and supporting her 100%. And that's exactly what we have now. Loved Abbie's face when Ichabod told that joke about Franklin and the spoon trick and when he said "who's the subpar alchemist now?". Their last scene together was amazing. When she breaks a little and says she needs his help... God. And then his reaction, the way he breathes in, the way he looks at her. Like he's saying himself that he'll die before letting her down. The monster was fun. Pity he was a villain, he and Ichabod could have spent so many afternoons bitching about Franklin... netlyon2 March 8, 2016 Share March 8, 2016 I'll take my Ichabbie centered comments (hurry UP already!!!) over to that thread. I'm super-late with this, but thought I'd throw in a few of my thoughts on the episode. I love where they're going with Abbie's storyline. It's great to see that they are going to allow Abbie to have some character development by having this be about dealing with her metaphorical demons, rather than a standard battle with an actual demon that hitched a ride back from the Catacombs. And I know that this show isn't going to reshape the world or fix the VA, but it's good to see that they are approaching her PTSD with more nuance than just "war makes you cray-cray." For some reason, these scenes with Abbie's struggle and Ichabod's understanding are really resonating with me (and not just because I 'ship them like there's no tomorrow). It's interesting to review the scenes from last episode with the information that the symbol is a coping mechanism for Abbie, not evidence of a spell or possession. I mean, it may still have some magical meaning as well, but it also make sense that it is something that Abbie uses to get through the day-to-day. The idea that she used the symbol as a way to focus herself and deal with the monotony works for me, especially given her established use of meditation and yoga. So now, the scenes from "Sins of the Father" read to me as someone who is using a mantra to manage the extreme stress of being back in the world, who has to slow things down, calm herself, breathe, and focus so that she doesn't run screaming. Except, as she said in this episode, she's become too reliant on it and is using it as an escape from the stresses of her life. Sure, it isn't alcohol, drugs, sex, or any of the more overtly destructive ways that one can self-medicate, but it is becoming a crutch that prevents her from actually dealing with the world that she now (re)inhabits. This is getting long, so I'll curtail my yammering, but I did want to mention that I thought the part where she is waiting for the antidote to revive Crane was played perfectly. It's not that she isn't freaking out; she's holding onto that symbol for dear life with one hand and clutching at her other lifeline with the other. She's taking a hit to calm herself even as she's forced to see the fallout from her addiction. We've seen twice now where our normally cool-headed Lietuenant has cracked under pressure (missing the ghoul last week and spilling the antidote this week); the draw of the symbol is in part its promise that she can regain that steadiness by giving in to it. Nearly losing Ichabod was her rock bottom, though, and by the end of the episode, she had to accept that that wasn't the case. While the "I need your help, Crane" was definitely momentous, it was also HUGE that she handed the symbol over to him, basically putting her peace of mind in his hands for a while. (Hmmm, have I officially given this more thought than the writers did? I sure hope not!) 9 Link to comment
Miss Dee March 8, 2016 Share March 8, 2016 No, that was beautiful, netlyon2. And I do think the writers are trying to show that. In essence, Abbie gave herself to Ichabod and his care and protection - but in a modern, non-romance novel kind of way! 3 Link to comment

Snookums March 8, 2016 Share March 8, 2016 I really do not care at all about how Pandora and Hidden One got where they are. Especially since this seems to contradict "my dad beat me into muteness until THO fed him to a lion" stuff from earlier. Gawd, show, settle on a backstory and move on! Lots and lots of "Boundaries: They Are Good" stuff this week: Ich and Abbie dancing around, trying to pretend she's getting better when she's not. Abby trying sooooo hard to pretend that she can control how much she needs the symbol (and her quiet "[the symbol being evil] doesn't change how much I need it" was GOLD. This woman needs ALL THE EMMYS.) Crane trying so hard to figure out where that faint, wavering line is between "I will help you" and "I will decide what's best for you." With Jenny and Joe, it was Take Two Of Guy Deciding What's Right For His Loved One. I was over this last week and the week before that with his constant bleating about Jenny's dad, and the whole "I bought you my version of your best life" oversized monstrosity of a trailer was the icing on that shit cake. I can't begin to express how thrilled I was that Jenny was A) PISSED and rightfully so, B) she did NOT "come around" to seeing Joe's approach as either romantic or something she "needed", and C) all was not forgiven and forgotten at the end. Yes, Joe genuinely meant well. He's not a scary stalker or an MRA fedora wearing neckbeard twit, but that doesn't change the reality that he just decided to fix Jenny's life so it's more in line with what he wants for her. This is sooooo many guys I know. They are wonderful, modern, intelligent, feminist men but they still have no notion, none, of how much space they take up in a relationship. How he thought "talking" for thirty seconds about repairs equalled "She's down with my totally changing out her living space!" The fact that the new trailer was huge enough that Jenny's little truck couldn't possible pull it, thus grounding her in one spot, said SO MUCH about how this purchase, while on the surface a big romantic gesture for Jenny, was in reality all about Joe's needs and insecurities and anxieties. Jenny putting paid to that was a huge breath of fresh air. Trying to change somebody's life? IS STEALING. And speaking of! HO and Pandora are at the "romancing" stage of the abuse cycle, where she's beaten down and clearly not going to take much more of this crap, and he knows it. So quick! Bring up the good times! Back in the beginning when it was all soooo romantic and huge and larger than life! Flowers! Join me now that I've decided to forgive you for whatever I decided was wrong! The sooner Pan pulls the plug on this crap the better. Last but not least, Leeds The Petulant Entitled Prick Goat was badly made up and bewigged, and frankly did not make a whole ton of sense, but at least he was fun and the actor had a good time just rolling around in his own self-aggrandizement like a pig in shit. Loved when Crane asked him what made his Lightning Dick so much better than Franklin's and he said "The answer is simple. You chose the wrong master. " Um... o-kay? That had absolutely nothing to do with what Crane actually asked? But you got to feel all smugpants in your ghoul makeup and grade school Thanksgiving pageant wig so you win, I guess. 3 Link to comment

Gawd, show, settle on a backstory and move on! From what I've read on Twitter, this season the writers room have made an effort to link all their backstories, so I'm not so sure Pandora wasn't telling Abbie the truth. There is another possibility: THO and Jersey Devil could be unreliable narrators. Or maybe just THO, since that's probably where the Jersey Devil heard the story to begin with. Considering the spins THO has recently pulled on Pandora, I wouldn't put it past him. ETA: There's also a chance THO's brother purchased the mute Pandora who, in turn, fed her father to the lions. Judging from the flashback, Pandora was already in service when she first met THO. Was it said her father sold Pandora specifically to THO? That said, when Pandora spoke to Abbie about her father, she said that he sold her when he got tired of beating her and that when she learned to speak again, she convinced her owner to feed her father to his lions. I’m thinking her owner was human, not a god. The irony of Pandora’s situation is “god” (don’t know which god), told her father to beat her, and now she’s married to a god, who could very well be the god whose responsible for her plight of beatings and servitude. This is not out of the norm of course since many who are abused as children go on to marry abusers. If Pandora is coming to her breaking point, which I think she is, I can see why considering all she’s endured and continue to endure had the hands of her ass of a husband. Before Pandora came to him with the flower, he was sitting in a throne room in the catacombs (I guess their version of hell) and given that box where all of the evil was kept. Then he used Pandora to open the box in the presence of his brother and that freed him from the catacombs? But when he defeated his brother with Pandora's box, he then got sucked away again? I guess back to the catacombs? Or where? WHO sucked him back to the catacombs (or was that where he got sucked to)? Unless I misheard it, the Devil's Newsreel said that humans then turned on THO and sucked him back. So I got it in my head that Pandora will go this route (possibly with help from our team). I personally liked the scenes with Jenny setting her boundaries. Partly because it shows HOW to set boundaries - which isn't something everyone knows. OTOH, I thought it amusing that she had no problem offering up Joe's money to handle Ichabod's immigration problems. Did anyone else think initially that Ichabod's immigration troubles were payback from the woman he was seeing before Abbie went missing? Edited March 11, 2016 by clanstarling 1 Link to comment

There's no indication that Zoe was that upset about Crane's attentions being elsewhere. And I think hearings are usually set months in advance. No one seemed to think the hearing was anything out of the ordinary -- Crane just missed it because he was on another plane. I think it would belittle Zoe, who's been presented as a fairly pleasant person, if she was behind the troubles. 2 Link to comment
