I bet Kornacki did contribute a lot to his, he may have had someone polish it, but he is a total geek on how voting breaks down, polling etc. He's almost too hyper to watch on election nights.

Possibly.   Cynic that I am, I suspect most of the books we see promoted on this show are conceived by publishers, who then court available media personalities and sell them on the idea of adding their name/likeness to the project for X-amount of dollars.

This morning Heilemann gave us the full Republicans are running the country speech. Depressing.

However, I'm thinking the Dems aren't as dumb as he made them seem.

MJ had another round of polls this AM. Once the Republicans get their way why won't those voters crawl back to where they were before this hot mess started?

I just don't see how that's going to happen with the Dems. Protests at the capital have been going on all week but weren't even covered on MJ this week.

I had not the least desire to watch this morning.    I don't watch Fox News, so there's no reason why I should be wasting my time with MJ anymore either.  Scarborough must feel the winds are blowing in the Trumpists' direction for the long term (and who can say they aren't if they can sexually assault women and still get women to vote for them and their causes), so like the spineless creature that he is, Scarborough's bending that way now.    I feel like a fool for ever watching this show in the first place.

(I wish that was the worst thing I'm feeling today.)

Millennium that's exactly how I feel too. MJ and Fox News are almost interchangeable except for a few guests here and there. I know Joes said trump won't run again but I'm not so sure. I believe this gassed him up and made him feel even more invincible

I actually think that most of this is joking. At the Katie Couric thing that Mika did last week, Joe stood up and asked the question "When are you going to marry me". Mika said that they had set a date, and that it was "soon", so we'll see.

She also said this about Joe: "He's fun, smart, a really good man, and I love being with him" (I'm sure this will get some laughs around here!)

Yeah well he's not funny, he's not particularly smart (how many times have we heard the same lame I'm bad at math and poor country lawyer lines) and a really good man wouldn't  have dated a married woman. And I guess she loves being with him someplace besides work

Scarborough may be right in saying that Trump will never run again.

That doesn't mean he won't be President though.

On 10/3/2018 at 10:57 AM, General Days said:

About a minute into the A block, they introduced the NYT tax story, but instead of discussing it seriously, it devolved into Joe calling him "Richie Rich" and laughing at his "hard-scrabble" existence. Willie then took over, summarized the story and said they'd dig into it, but went on to spend their time pleasuring Kavanaugh, because they must see something in it for themselves.

At the top of the whatever block (C, maybe) at about 43 minutes in, they showed clips of the upcoming Showtime film, The Family Business: Trump and Taxes. It's a documentary about the story mentioned above (if you've been on something of a news blackout, I'm talking about the one that hit the internet last night and today's hard copy New York Times).

After showing the teaser, Mika said, "A look there at Showtime's new documentary that follows the team of New York Times investigative reporters, as they uncovered the information that led to the exclusive report about Trump's taxes. The film debuts this Sunday night, and we're going to have much more from the explosive report straight ahead, but Joe, you have something else on your mind right now."

Joe went into a stupid riff with Willie about how the new Nobel prize winners ripped off their laser experiments from them (i.e. Joe & Willie). Barnicle got in on the "joke" (apologies to anyone with a sense of humor for misusing that word). Then they started talking about last night's Cubs/Rockies playoff game, which was clearly planned, because Barnicle talked over footage from the game. Then they speculated about the Yankees and the A's.

Then Mika teased whatever breaking news, maybe the UN telling the US to lift some sanctions on Iran.

The whole thing was a four-to-five minute long teaser block. I hate this fakakta show. I only tuned in because I got up earlier than I needed to, so I hit record on my DVR, in case I wanted to see any of the segments. There's something wrong with me that I'm still watching it.

In the next block, the guest was Richard A. Clark, author of the 2017 book, Warnings, which just came out in paperback. I guess he's also on to promote his new podcast called Future State. Yawn. He was the kind of guest Morning Joe used to handle well, but it seemed like a stall to not have to address the NYT Trump Taxes investigation.

The 7:00am block kicked off with more Kavanaugh and discussion of how the FBI investigation could end today. In addition to Mika, Bunker-Joe, Willie, and Mike Barnicle, the panel included Daniel Goldman (former SDNY criminal division assistant US Atty), Eddie Glaude Jr., Nick Confessore, and Yamiche Alcindor. Mika held up today's NYT and said they'd get to today's "Richie Rich story" in a moment. She and Joe yukked it up for a while, but then Joe turned it back to servicing Kavanaugh, but let Willie take the lead, so it sounded like they were giving serious consideration to the fact that the FBI investigation could end today. I feel like Barnicle is at least trying with this story.

Goldman is a substantive person, but he just rehashed what's been said since Friday night. The FBI could be doing a great job investigating this, if only it were allowed. He did make the point that although this is a background investigation, and they don't have subpoena power, when they come across allegations that impugn someone's truthfulness, they would follow up on them to determine if they're legitimate, if this were a "full" (read: legitimate) investigation, but it does not appear to be.

About 7:09, Mika finally introduced the NYT story, which largely asserts that much of Donald Trump's money comes from the fact that he helped his parents hide their money for tax purposes. I guess I'm glad the Times did this story, but nothing's likely to come of it. The statute of limitations has passed. Mika brought up the possibility of civil suits. Yawn. This is all baked into the cake for the Trump base. Corrupt rich guy is corrupt. Willie listed some of the details (getting a 200k salary at age three and being a millionaire at age eight).

Confessore said Donald Trump was deeply involved in all his father's schemes. He alleged the Trump's systematically and repeatedly undervalued their holdings, blah blah blah.

Barnicle noted how the orange one always has nicknames for everyone and said we now have a nickname for "The President." It would be "Thanks Dad Trump." Oh, Mike! You were having a pretty good day. Take the rest of the week off; go home; watch some post-season baseball.

Barnicle went on to say how Fred always bailed out Donald. In 1990, Donald tried to have his father's will rewritten in a way that the elder Trump worried his "empires" would be used to bail out out the younger Trump's failing business. "So in addition to being a tax cheat, a fraud, and a crook, we found out from The New York Times, and all this material they've provided, that Donald Trump was also a scheming son."

Joe acted like he was adding input but just rehashed what Barnicle just said. He then teed up Glaude with another "Richie Rich" mention. Glaude has too much insight to waste his time like this, on this shell of a show. Glaude made three points:

1. DT was born with not a gold spoon, but a platinum one, and blew his inheritance in all sorts of ways.

2. Glaude's reminded of Herman Melville's 1857 novel, The Confidence-Man (which I have not read). Joe the Simple Country Lawyer tried smile beneficently, like he got the reference. Glaude's point is that DT is a snake-oil salesman, and notes that the Times admits it was complicit in his deception, because they helped him sell his phony image.

3. There's an inherited pattern of tax fraud or evasion, which makes it even more necessary that we see DT's tax forms, because it's likely that he's done all the tricks he learned at his father's knee.

Mika added something that added nothing, then read DT's attorney's statement, which includes a threat to sue. Joe threw in a smoking cigarettes at the Holiday Inn with Willie distraction, then referenced Melville.

Barnicle brought up that DT's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, is a sitting federal judge and asked Goldman what the implications could be for her, if her name is on any forms constituting fraud.

Goldman brought up judicial impeachment. If there was any evidence implicating Maryanne, it would be referred to a committee which would assess it. His take away from the NYT piece is, that, from a legal perspective, you see:

1. Over-inflated invoices: these are created to facilitate kickbacks

2. Bogus loans, a hallmark of fraud, where you say you're giving a loan, but it's never paid back. i.e. it is an unreported gift

3. Fred Trump dumping $3.3 million worth of casino chips at one of DT's casinos, to provide him with enough operating cash (this means the elder Trump bought that much worth in chips, but never intended to and never did use them; NOTE: this part of story has been covered before. (1991 WaPo story; 2016 reprint of a 1991 Press of Atlantic City story

4. Different representation of the value of Trump properties in different filings. They under- or over-value it, depending on what's convenient at the time - another hallmark of fraud. While it can't be charged criminally because it happened so long ago, the IRS can look at it from a civil perspective.

Joe tossed to Yamiche and asked if it will raise an eyebrow in Trump country. I like Yamiche, but she didn't really answer that. Instead, she talked about how his followers buy into his false story of being the personification of the American Dream. She then brought up Ben Carson's comment that "Poverty is a state of mind," and the administration re-writes to the tax code, then rehashed how Trump didn't earn anything, he inherited it, and that turned to Kavanaugh getting into Yale as a legacy. In other words, Trump's followers think they can achieve what he has, but don't realize he didn't actually achieve it. It was handed to him. Meanwhile, he's screwing them six ways til Sunday, but they don't know.

Willie asked Goldman about the legal questions, and noted how old the allegations are, then asked if there was a possibility of criminal prosecution, which Goldman had already twice (at least) said there isn't. He again said no, not for the 1990s stuff, then referenced what Glaude said, and said it is time to look more recently, because DT probably didn't stop this shit after his father died. Goldman also said some of the financial games are legal, but some stuff is suspect.

Joe invoked the name of Bernie Sanders, then pointed out Trump was supposed to be some populist, who decried how everything was rigged, and this undercuts the message. Mika repeated it was incredible (twice), then teased a new immigration horror story, where investigators found NOOSES in detention center cells. She also teased an upcoming segment with Senator Dick Durbin and Mayor Andrew Gillum, but I can't keep doing this.

I'm quitting, because the more time I spend on this show, the more I hate everything.

Hey!.  I am not sure if anyone remembers me , but I used to recap this show on a daily basis for many years .I had to stop recapping the show due to career choices etc. My mom was American, & my dad was rescued by the American Navy in WW2 afer his ship sunk near Salonika Greece. I loved Sanibel for the beach/shells . My relatives live in Bonita Springs. Ft Myers Beach is OK.  The Edison-Ford estates is nice. Sarasota has better museums.

OK, back to Morning Joe.

Is Mika releasing a book about her?

Why does Joe hair still look pouffy?

Mika & Joe remind me of the TV show Moonlighting with Maddie & David. I suspect that Joe had a big crush on Mika & was able to get her as a co host. Mika didn't have other jobs at the time. Mika is now a big star that makes more money than her two better educated brothers. Dr Z must be baffled by her success. I think Mika must find Joe annoying. Joe must be pissed off at Mika for bringing farm animals into their home.

Welcome back Oakville!  I'm not sure where I stand regarding MJ.  It is hard to pinpoint when we began watching MJ but we tried MJ because we got so tired of the constant changes in morning anchors on CNN from hosts we really liked to those we liked less and less as the turnovers continued.  The best years were when Chris Licht was the executive producer.  Looking back, I think I have watched more years than I realized. Where does the time go?

Over the last couple of months, they started doing book reviews again, which I enjoy. However, I realized this week just how boring the show has become. I watched CNN one day instead of MJ and didn't turn on the TV most other mornings.

For me, the show has lost its spark. It is on constant repeat, not only repeating what was shown earlier in the show but what was already covered by other MSNBC shows.  I really enjoy Stephanie Ruhle and Ali Velshi and wish they would replace MJ. Stephanie starts them off with a show at 9am, which is late if I want to be out and about. IMO, the show has continued to decline since you last posted regularly.  It will be fun to read your thoughts once you get back to recapping.

Agree, but I'll add that now I think the core of the show is now actively moving against my own beliefs.  Mika's political beliefs - such as they are, and for lack of any better description of her half-thought-through musings - are a weird mishmash of convenient libertarianism, pro female while at the same time pro old white guy, and a bewildering measure of Puritanism.  She and I don't agree on anything.  Joe is against Conservatives, small c conservatism, Trump, and all that those things entail for two weeks, and at the end of that binge, he's pro-Trump, and making excuses for the same policies and people he spent the previous month eviscerating.  He could be chasing ratings, he could be influenced by promises of influence/power.   It could be that the show got stale repeating "trump is bad because..."  I dunno.
Their guest list has slowly been adding Trump sympathizers who attempt to normalize Trumpism and lay the blame of all issues at the feet of the impotent minority party.  They're smug intellectuals who are true believers and make watching painful and discouraging.

For example, Joe thinks it's the Democrats' fault that Kavanaugh got appointed.

Thanks! I started watching Morning Joe in 2008. I recapped the shows on this forum and the predecessor website. I liked the show because it was balanced. Joe was the Republican & Mika was the Liberal Democrat daughter of a key National Security Advisor. Dr Z helped defeat communism.

I am a big fan of Dr Z. He went to McGill. I am the McGill alumni ambassador for the Oakville area etc.

I always wanted to invite Dr Z to Oakville to speak. I think I would have the authority to contact Mika , since she is the daughter of a McGill alumni to come to Toronto for a book signing event etc.

I wonder if MSNBC will renew Mika & Joe's contract?

What’s with the saying joes gotten so fond of... congresses role “as the saucer that cools the coffee”. What does that even mean? I think maybe Meacham said it first last week and he stumbled over it. Joe’s repeated it frequently since

How does the saucer cool the coffee?????? I thought the saucer was there to catch drips??

If the saucer is Congress and the coffee is the President and it is governmental checks and balances that are being referred to, well, then, that is one tortured metaphor

Joe must think it makes him sound smart

Now they're talking about McConnell's shifting rationale for blocking the Garland nomination, but everyone is missing the real story here.

When McConnell was blocking Garland, his rationale was, "We can't nominate a Supreme Court Justice in an election year because the people deserve a say."

The new rationale is, "We can't nominate a Supreme Court Justice in an election year when the Senate is controlled by a different party than the White House because it hasn't been done since 1888."

That's because he's trying to keep the door open in case there's an opening in 2020 and doesn't want to get hoisted on his own petard of hypocrisy.

The republicans don't care about what they said.  Their supporters can be easily manipulated.  They are just responding to reporters.  In that way, the reporters will have to move on or risk being seen as "too liberal".

Not to undermine John McCains service to this country; for sure he was a patriot for that but as a politician I think it's the same as when they make Regan out to be some kind of benevolent saint. Trickle down economics anyone? And contrary to Joes rants, I'm not sure what the democrats can do to win. It's no longer just republicans vs democrats but democrats vs a trump cult and I don't know how you overcome that. Trump himself said don't believe what you see or hear and his supporters don't. That shouldn't matter since they're such a small slice of the American pie but with the electoral college, gerrymandering and voter suppression it absolutely does matter

The kids loved picking up  the shells. :)) However, my love of art & culture & the circus (John Ringling) makes me want to buy property in Sarasota.

I can't wait to do my recaps again. ! The new recapper "General Days" does a phenomenal job of recapping the show.

Do I have to re apply for my job of Morning Joe Recapper ???

No new recapper here.  I don't watch MJ regularly anymore, because I think it has gone way down the tubes. I covered that segment, because I thought the NYT story was worth covering. It's nice to see you back. Congrats on your early retirement. It is nice to see you back here.

I agree with your post. When they started to discuss McCain, I made a similar (less eloquent) comment to my husband.  McCain was a patriot, a hero and he often took admirable stances.  No one knows how he would have handled this particular situation, and I hope he is not placed on a pedestal. From what I've heard about him, he would not have liked that.

You run over to CNN and parrot and exact same talking points, bracelet and all.

I switched over to CNN a couple of times this morning and each time they were talking about the same thing at the same time.  I ended up turning off the TV because MJ was dwelling on only a few stories.

How does the saucer cool the coffee?????? I thought the saucer was there to catch drips??

My grandpa used to pour coffee out of his cup into the saucer (thus cooling the coffee down a bit), then he'd pick up the saucer and drink from it.  He was an Irish immigrant, he came to America in 1925.

What’s with the saying joes gotten so fond of... congresses role “as the saucer that cools the coffee”. What does that even mean?

You all realize you're a million times more entertaining than the show itself, right?  That shitty show is the price I have to pay to be thoroughly entertained by y'all.

I've got news for McKinnon. McCain would have voted to confirm.  They need to get over this John McCain is a saint bullshit.

Very true! I can't watch this show until I retire. I have to keep my blood pressure low.

And does anyone believe that the "author" actually wrote it?   Or was it some underpaid, anonymous hack working from notes provided to the publisher?

I think Mika probably dictated the book to a ghost writer
