has anyone ever watched the west wing?

Yeah, I binged it last year.  It has very fast paced, witty dialogue and seems as if it may be more 'realistic' than, say Scandal or House of Cards.  In other words, the drama (kidnappings, assassination attempts, romance/sex, global issues and war threats) seem within the bounds of what really could go on in the White House.  House of Cards scared the crap out of me, because it was really dark and some of the bad things they did seemed believable in real life, and made me rethink my view of politics.  Scandal is just way off the grid-really dark, cruel and godhelpus if this actually goes on in DC.

Yeah, I watched it when it was first-run. Interesting to note that in the first episode, when Sam (Rob Lowe) was with an escort and got a call from POTUS, that escort was played by Lisa Edelstein, later known as Cuddy on House.

RIP Mr. Berry. He was a strange guy.

No doubt about that -- The man was twisted, a thoroughly remarkable sort of pervert. Art would be a noble pursuit if it weren't for, you know, artists. Many rockers consider themselves to be rebels and outlaws, but Berry was always the real deal. As a black man playing to audiences of ever-increasing numbers of white teenagers in the 1950s, Berry was a marked man. Add to that his penchant for felonies, cash and young, white girls, he was practically Public Enemy #1 next to the likes of the relatively wholesome Elvis Presley or even the jailbait-loving Jerry Lee Lewis. As a result of his *cough* habits, Berry served time in the early 1960s, and never returned to the heights of his string of remarkable early singles on the Chess label, which included some of the bedrocks of modern popular music, like "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," "No Particular Place To Go," and "You Never Can Tell."

It's impossible to deny the not-so-small fact that Berry's guitar style launched a million garage bands; his signature guitar work laid the foundation that practically every band that came after him followed as a blueprint. It was Berry's lyrics that raised the bar from "moon in June" love songs to songs full of wry word play, with a point of view and an acerbic wit. And his lyrics, far more than any of his contemporaries, were the stuff that inspired Lennon and Dylan and everyone who followed their lead to push the boundaries of the pop music format to its breaking point almost a decade later.

The examples of Berry's poetry and wordplay are endless, but it was his song "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" that captured my imagination from a Wurlitzer jukebox in Ballard's Drug Store: "Flying across the desert in a TWA / I saw a woman walking across the sand / She been a-walkin' thirty miles en route to Bombay / To get a brown eyed handsome man." -- For a 1956 single, that is remarkable imagery. As was his superb, proto-rap "Too Much Monkey Business," from 1957: "Blonde haired good looks, tryin' to get me hooked / Want me to marry, get a home, settle down, write a book! / Too much monkey business, too much monkey business / Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!" These songs were social commentary when artists were singing Tin Pan Alley factory-written songs and had no opinions beyond what was written by the public relations department of their record label.

Chuck Berry -- by writing all of his own material in an era when that was unheard of -- invented the language of rock and roll, and reinvented the English language for generations. He did it in that most American way possible, the way Mark Twain did it, or Walt Whitman or Kerouac; by experimenting, and playing with language as the greatest toy ever known. Chuck Berry cut and cleared his own path, leading the way forward for generations of musicians and, particularly songwriters.

Wonderful, Cupid! You really can write!

"Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" and "You Never Can Tell" were my absolute favourites--both written in clave [Bo Diddley beat], which I love. And the word-pictures he could make!

I met him once in the 70s when he played Toronto. Nothing interesting to report, and I have no idea where his autograph on a Rothman's package ended up.

It takes a lot of editing; I prattle on ...

I write most of the copy in memorial segments for the station talent; the "kids" in the office call it my Paean To The March of the Dinosaurs. After working seven days at Elvis' Last Supper in Austin, with 80% musical and merchandising mediocracy, I feel the poignancy of Chuck Berry's legacy and death.

His voice and music has always been with me, and being fan has not been a simple relationship. I've seen him live out of tune and didn't care, and when he shined his light on the audience and slayed us.

I feel my years as the deaths add up.

I think my brother is getting out soon. This fills me with anxiety.

Is he going to be released on his own recognizance? Perhaps the family can speak to his doctor's to have your brother monitored in a halfway house.

From what I understand, he'll be released and have 7 days to pack up his stuff and evict the apartment. Apparently, he's going to stay with my father. Now, if my father were normal, that would be fine.  But he's abusive, does drugs, drinks, and if you ask me, is also nuts. So, I don't see this lasting. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong but I doubt it. I haven't spoken to the man in 15 years and there's a reason for that. He's toxic. But, the doctors said they were going to follow up more with him and a social worker has been calling. So hopefully, she'll keep an eye on him and do something if she feels the environment isn't right.

That living situation sounds like a disaster looking for a place to erupt.

I know this is very difficult for you, but the social worker needs to be apprised or reminded of your father's issues before your bother is released. Living with your father cannot be a stable environment for your brother.

I think my mother, when speaking to the social worker, said she didn't see it working out or being a good idea. I don't know if she went into detail though. If I knew her name or how to reach her I could try speaking with her, but every time she's called the house she's spoken to my grandfather and I haven't been around. I'm mostly hoping my father is going to find him his own place to live but house him in the meantime.

I had a rottymix that looked just like Hazel.  Your pictures brought back fond memories of our 10+ years relationship.  Rest in Peace, Dixie.

We got Hazel from a Dobie rescue group when she was 4.  She'll be 11 in May.  We knew she wasn't full Dobie, were told she was half Lab, half Dobie and I ended up doing a DNA test to see what was what.  She turned out to have some Rottie, half doberman, and the rest was Cocker Spaniel.

We have never told her about the Cocker lineage.  The only dog in the neighborhood she dislikes is a cocker we see on our morning walks.  I'm afraid she's feel as bad about being related to that dog as I would be if I found out I was part ButtBiscuit.

Cupid Stunt, thanks for asking.  Healing is coming along slowly, one more week and then I can get new glasses.  One unexpected pleasure from being unable to read regular books has been discovering Liane Moriarity's books which I've downloaded to the Kindle since I can enlarge the print.  I got interested with the HBO series, Big Little Lies and she's good!

Hazel is the most feminine Rottie or Dobie mix I've ever seen. @boes she looks like a Disney character dog. I'm pretty sure that cocker in your neighborhood subtly shaded her at their initial meeting since they have big emotional eyes, and Hazel has that as well PLUS some glossy shampoo commercial hair and long legs.

@Snaporaz thank you! George is well. I need to give him a summer cut since right now he looks like a Pantene ad.

I don't listen to audio books but I do listen to podcasts and YouTube storytimes and reviews when I work in store off hours or my office area. The first podcast I listened to was this sites 'Again With This!'  which is very funny and well done. YouTube has some storytimes or reviews of products and reality shows that are Ridic.

mmmmm....Key lime pie....I'm a sucker for anything citrus, and now I'm craving a slice!  But it's pouring rain and Bates Motel starts in a half hour.  I guess I'll have to settle for one of those hot cross buns I bought yesterday with the pieces of candied orange peel.  Hope you're having a nice birthday, peaches!
