Small Talk: The Polygamous Cul-de-Sac

Message added by Scarlett45

I  understand the fear, concern, heartbreak, and stress in this current situation. I ask that we please remember the politics policy. Keep politics, political references, and political figures (past and present) out of the discussion.

Stay safe and healthy.

For those who enjoy podcasts, you may enjoy this new series about Short Creek

"Short Creek is a community on the Utah/Arizona border divided by much more than a state line. On one side are fundamentalist, polygamous Mormons who believe the town should be run by God—and his prophet. On the other are ex-believers who want democracy—and the right to believe (or not believe) as they want. When the prophet, Warren Jeffs, goes to prison for sex crimes, the community has to face its painful past...and struggle to define its future.

From Witness Docs and Critical Frequency, hosts Ash Sanders and Sarah Ventre move beyond the headlines and embed in the community to bring you Unfinished: Short Creek, a very American story about the battle between freedom of religion and freedom from religion that asks whether people on two sides of a deep divide can rediscover common ground."

I hope you enjoy it - I am really enjoying it.  Its very interesting to hear from the people who were living in that community before the Jeffs started taking over. I had never really thought about this aspect before (community prior to Jeffs)... so I'm finding it intriguing.

This review from the New Yorker explains more about the series.

"Ash Sanders and Sarah Ventre, the hosts of the series “Unfinished: Short Creek,” from Witness Docs and Critical Frequency, spent four and a half years reporting the story of Short Creek, an isolated community of current and former fundamentalist, and polygamist, Mormons on the Utah-Arizona border. With sensitivity, care, and a focus on locals speaking for themselves, Sanders, “a proud Utahan,” and Ventre, “an even prouder Arizonan,” explore how a group originally centered on sharing food, labor, houses, and land became a cult of personality dominated by the church leader Warren Jeffs, who’s now serving a life sentence for sex crimes. John DeLore’s masterly sound design—subtle piano, children singing the credo “Keep Sweet”—helps ground a story of dramatic extremes, as do the voices of women who have left the community. As one says, “God knows where I am, and if she needs me she can find me.” "

Nice photo with the (much longer) article, not sure if the link will allow everyone to see it. She is still a very attractive lady.

Last November, the internet fell in love with Tanqueray, a straight-shooting New Yorker who shared memories of her life as a burlesque dancer in the 1960s and ’70s with the many millions of people who follow Humans of New York on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

Her tales were full of underground glamour and gritty city characters — “mob guys,” “strippers and porn stars in Times Square” and a madam who “controlled all the high dollar prostitutes back then” — as well as resilience and humor. She told of the time her mother kicked her out of the house for getting pregnant at 17; how her mother had her arrested but “the warden did some tests on me and found out I was smart, so I got a scholarship to go anywhere in New York.”

“I chose the Fashion Institute of Technology, which I hated,” she told Humans of New York.

The post was shared widely and received tens of thousands of comments on Instagram, including one from the actress Jennifer Garner, who asked: “Why is this not a @netflix series?”

For almost a year, there were no updates from Tanqueray, whose real name is Stephanie Johnson. Then last week, Brandon Stanton, the creator of Humans of New York, announced he would post 32 more quotes by Ms. Johnson, 76, on Instagram in an effort to raise money for her medical expenses and ongoing care.

The internet immediately rallied to her aid. A GoFundMe campaign started by Mr. Stanton for Ms. Johnson raised over $2.5 million dollars in a week.

“When this photo was taken, ten thousand men in New York City knew that name,” Ms. Johnson is quoted in the caption of an Instagram post, where she is holding up a photo that depicts her younger self in a magenta burlesque costume, complete with a feathered headpiece. “They’d line up around the block whenever I was dancing in Times Square, just so I could sign the cover of their nudie magazine.”

Over the course of a year, in two hourlong sittings at a diner, Ms. Johnson told Mr. Stanton about her life. Raised outside of Albany in a mostly white community, she was forced to leave her home as a teenager after a tumultuous relationship with her mother. Once in New York City, she did what she had to do to survive. The Instagram posts include recollections of her time renting a room at the Salvation Army; ditching one of the Temptations who wanted to go to bed with her; and calling on the mob to intimidate her ex-husband.

The newfound fame and fortune does not faze Ms. Johnson, who, despite the flashy persona, is a quiet, introverted woman who has never smoked a cigarette, doesn’t drink and prefers reading and being at home to going to parties. She said she plans to live her life the way she has been and upon her death the remaining money from the GoFundMe will be donated to the Association to Benefit Children, a nonprofit association that serves underprivileged children in New York City.

“I look at people and they don’t have food, they are homeless or whatever is going on, and if I am fortunate to do this, why wouldn’t I donate it?” Ms. Johnson asked. “I don’t even want a car.”

(She did say she is happy to be recognized at the supermarket or to get a free dessert every once in a while at the diner. “I think its wonderful,” she said. “People really like me.”)

Eddie Van Halen, 65, died at St John's Hospital in Santa Monica this morning. Ten year battle with throat cancer that spread into his brain and other organs.

Long ago Guitar Magazine listed him as all time #1.

He was a nerdy little kid who locked himself in his bedroom with a guitar and emerged a year later as a genius.

My daughter was an '80s kid and lived at the roller rink in our population 6000 mountain town about 90 minutes from El Lay. At one point she was the DJ and ran the snack bar and she was allowed to skate when she played Jump because the snack bar was deserted then.

The regret of her 8th grade life was being at home the night Eddie and wife Valerie Bertinelli  wandered into the rink on a week night and stayed for about an hour.

Daughter was TICKED because no one called her with a heads up. Everyone thought someone else called her. The manager told me later that the rink was nearly empty and the dozen or so kids who were there followed Eddie like puppies which was fine because then he had Valerie to himself. He said they laughed about "The beast with 26 legs." And he said they couldn't have been nicer and the kids were dazed, and he was too (and he only played Jump twice).

Mr. Xword and I saw Van Halen in concert in 1988.  We won a radio station trip that included tickets, backstage passes, flight to Seattle, and an overnight hotel stay.  It was a Monsters of Rock tour that included several other bands, at the now-gone KingDome.

A true electric guitar virtuoso, was Eddie.  RIP.

Oh, Eddie.  This one hurts.  I grew up in the 80's and my goodness, that hair, that smile, that talent!! 🥺

Between Eddie, Prince and Tom Petty, there is going to be one smokin' show going on somewhere above the clouds.

They don't make 'em like that any more.

Just like movie stars.  Back in the day  there were these REALLY good looking actors - who are either dead now, or aging.  Who is there nowadays?   ????

I know Orlando and Hugh.  What are some of the movies they star in?  Maybe that's the problem.  They are in the types of movies I don't watch!

Orlando is best known for the Lord of the Rings & Pirates of the Caribbean franchises- 20 years later his face has not broken and he is still “facially blessed” as my Mommy says.

Hugh Jackman is known for portraying Wolverine(of course) and Les Mis, The Greatest Showman, Australia.

I think he's cute!  LOL

Me, too.  And I've seen him sometimes where he was downright handsome!

Brad Pitt in Meet Joe Black.

Tom Cruise, although I personally think he's a weirdo and I have zero respect for him regarding his attitude towards Suri after his divorce.

Sean Connery had his moments.

Cary Grant was so suave and smooth loved him too.  On the opposite end of the physical appearance spectrum, I also loved Robert Mitchum.  Again with the voice, I guess I must be attracted aurally more so than visually

He was so handsome and sexy in the movie Mask.  He's still good looking, and I like his deep voice, too.

I recently watched Behind The Candelabra, and Matt Damon is very appealing in that movie.  I do like blond men especially.

Clint Eastwood in Play Misty For Me?  So handsome.

Yay!  I am not alone!!! 😁

He was also a GREAT actor.

Also on a looks basis, I also liked Pierce Brosnan and George Peppard (when he was young, like in "Breakfast at Tiffany's")

And of course young Robert Redford.

And for younger guys I could be swayed by Matt Damon every now and then.

When I think of male movie stars, I always think of Pitt, Clooney, Washington, Hanks, DiCaprio, Ford (Harrison) and Cruise (although I will never watch another Cruise film due to his link to Scientology).  But those are the fellas that I can't look away from when they are on the screen.

As for the lesser-known actors, give me Kyle Chandler all day long. (swooooooooon)

I would listen with rapt attention if Sam Elliot read the phone book. He played a criminal on a season of Justified several years ago. He didn’t have a mustache, which seemed just wrong to me. The other actor I could listen to all day was Alan Rickman. He was the perfect Professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies.

This is where I first fell in love with Alan Rickman.  Those eyes, that voice.  SO many people only know him for his role as Professor Snape and that was the not the best showcase of his talents!  How about the villain in Die Hard?  Or the voice of the depressed robot in Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy?  Or my personal favorite, Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility . . . Oh what a great loss.  What a beautiful man, inside and out.
