That may very well be, but the way Archie and Eli handled it was so incredibly gross; entitled privilege at its worst.

Ah, since that whole draft day thing from my perspective was always whether or not the Giants gave up fair compensation to get him, I didn't realize that Eli actually told his side of the story after he retired.

Sounds like it was Eli and his agent who made the call. Not his dad.

Per Eli:

“My dad just tried to take some heat off of me,” Manning said. “He knew I’d get criticized, he didn’t love the idea of it at first just because it was going to cause a lot of drama.”

Per Brady off of his recent interview with Colin Cowherd, Tom is not expected to start with FOX until the 2024 season

Taking a year off means he’s finally off my screen and also means I’ll be fine if he never comes back.

This SB apparently also has another first - first time two Texas high school quarterbacks face off.

Jim Kelly - Heh. He made it perfectly clear that he would NOT play for a cold weather team. He specifically stated that he wouldn't play for the Packers, Vikings, or Bills. Apparently the Bills didn't get the memo because they drafted him. And Kelly, true to his word went to play in the USFL and stayed there until it went out of business.

Where he went to play for the Bills and took them to 4 consecutive Super Bowls.   At least one of which he would have one except for a kicker who thought he knew more than everyone else.

God the NFL Network botched opening night.   Instead of seeing interviews with a lot of players or the media scrum that occurs, we got IN STUDIO analysis of players and the teams while waiting for Irvin to get to the next exclusive interview.   Apparently if you had NFL+ you got the interviews only.   So I get it was trying to get people to pay but it really hurt the overall feel of excitement for the big game.   We have ALL week for the in studio talking heads, this is the ONE NIGHT for the media scrum.   Also why is Irvin still doing employed?   The man is NOT good.   He shouts, he doesn't talk.   He is not a good interviewer.  Its just ... bad.

They didn't even cover the line of the night - Someone asked Nick Siriani is this was a "must win" game.

I really, REALLY wanted him to get a chance to be the HC for the Cardinals. That organization would have done well with his style setting the tone. It would have been fun to watch.

Yeah it would have been nice for Brian to get a HC job.  However, I disagree with what might have happened for Flores in Arizona.  Not a great culture down there, and why deal with Murray when you can get a better opportunity to go elsewhere with a better culture & a contender toward the title.

I think he has a decent shot at getting another look as more time passes into 2024 & 2025.  Maybe a sorta out of nowhere spot in Green Bay, but being one step closer to where he was a year ago is not too bad

Michael Irvin sent home from the Super Bowl.   Apparently SOMETHING happened at the hotel and a woman complained.   he said he only talked to her for a minute but he also says he doesn't remember because he had "a few drinks."

This is not a first offense for Irvin.   I hope he is off the network for good.   He just wasn't that good a studio head.   he shouts too much, he's too gimmicky.   You know who turned out to be really good and thoughtful in his analysis?   Deon Sanders.   But he's HC at Buffalo now.

Where there is smoke there is fire.

Never liked Irvin.  Not as a player and not as a commentator? Talking head?  Whatever his job was.

@mojoween I know you are a Giants fan. I wanted to ask you if you knew about this book.

I started reading it last night and I'm enjoying it.

Coach/QB relations was not a strong point of the Flores reign in Miami, though. He coached like he was afraid of Tuas mistakes.

He definitely didn't do Tua any favors; it seemed like he didn't approve of the choice to pick him from the way it sounded.

But coaching the rookie Tua is an entirely different situation than what somebody is going to inherit with Cardinals. I guess the question I'm pondering is, what kind of coach would have the best chance of getting Murray be the best player he can be. (Because he can be a great player.)

  • Somebody who just lets Kyler be Kyler and does what he needs to do to make sure the rest of the team prepared and game plans are what will work for his QB.
  • Somebody who is no-nonsense through and through, and who will make it clear that any nonsense from Murray (real or perceived by others) needs to go away. Because I perceive a lot of nonsense.
  • Or the rare Parcells type, who is both no-nonsense and also really good at pushing each player in a way that works best for that player.

I don't know if there's any coach that can help Kyler.  To be fair, he hasn't been in the league that long.   So I don't think it's completely accurate that he's a guy that would get coaches fired a lot.  On the other hand, he got paid, and there have been a lot of examples of people becoming less popular because of it.  Or someone that experiences behavior that they're better than someone else.

I don't know what to think of Arizona's situation, but while Flores is a better leader IMO than Kliff, he is a defensive guy.  So they would need to find someone respectful on the offensive side

So Roger Goodell wants to be able to flex games into TNF as well. Talk about refusing to see what the real problems with TNF are, because then they'd have to do things they don't want to do, like only schedule teams coming off their bye week into the game (which would be a scheduling headache) or drop TNF altogether (bye sweet sweet Amazon cash).

But all this is going to do is turn games that would have been great on Sunday into games that are blah on Thursdays. The problem is not the match-ups, the problem is that teams playing on Sunday do not have adequate preparation or recovery to play another game just four days later at a really high level, especially once it's a few weeks into the season. Now imagine being suddenly flexed into TNF to boot. I hope the players and teams fight this stupid idea.

I thought the original plan with TNF was that every team had to play on Thursday exactly once, and that the ideal schedule was to do it coming off your bye week.

In case there was ever any doubt that players are cattle, albeit extremely well paid cattle, this stupid idea proves it, once again.

IMO, the league will not flex a Sunday game into TNF without warning.  I imagine that there would be a reasonable point to warn the teams that it's going to happen.  The NFL is not going to flex a game that's 7 days away, and make it to where a team will have to play on 3 days rest.

It's not ideal either way, but it's not the worst thing in the world.  I'd rather they don't do it, but if the league moved forward with it, that's a good thing for the casual viewer.  I imagine the players will fight it, but if they do, they're going to lose

This also affects fans.  If you are a fan who is going to a Thursday night game perhaps you came in from out of town.  Or you took the next day off from work.  Even flexing Sunday night games has consequences for fans.  But fucking around with a Thursday night game would make things even worse.

To be honest, there's not going to be one big thing from the NFL that would result in me saying, "I'm done with football forever!"  The league will move on & be fine with or without me.  I'll be around 40 years from now or many years after I'm dead, whichever is longer.  They'll be fine.  Despite the frustration, that's a good thing.  The sport is great.

That being said, if I ever stopped it would be over a ton of cumulative things the league has done coupled with my own life agenda.  The new rules, the playoff structure, neutral site conference title games, etc...it is what it is.  I may or may not like it; however I adjust & deal with it.

It'll come down to the schedule.  The flexing, extra days (look for Friday football post Turkey Day being a weekly thing), and so on would have me quit (either some/several weeks or outright) if it interferes with other things I do on within a typical day or week.  Examples are time with family, reading, and doing stuff that produces money.

That's the danger the NFL runs.  To some extent.  People like me would move on as we're not going to throw away what's important for football.  Otherwise, we'd lose both.  And that's okay.  The league will have other people come into the sport in addition to the many that will stick with it

So I'm reading what was covered with the commissioner's annual Super Bowl new conference.

On flex scheduling, it was that Monday games are definitely in play for flex scheduling next season, and that Thursday games are not right now, but are on the horizon of something they might do."

I imagine that the competition committee and the other decision making groups will at least attempt to tackle the problems that will cause teams before it gets implemented. I'm not a fan of this idea, just like everybody else.

On the Thursday night football ratings, Goodell said the intention was to reach another platform, targeting younger audiences who rely on streaming instead of traditional broadcast television. Followed with "We reduced our average age of our audience almost 10 years, and that’s exactly what we’re looking for"

Honestly, I think that reducing the average of viewership was a side benefit of getting a billion dollars a year from Amazon, which was the real "intention".

Also "average age of viewership" is a misleading stat. If you simply removed a bunch of old people who don't want to deal with figuring out streaming, you would reduce your average age without actually adding any new young people.

Looks like I better get these in before showtime (and I might be super too late anyway):

For in-season awards, I'll go with Mahomes for MVP & OPOY, Nick Bosa for DPOY, Daboll for COY, and I guess I'll stick with Purdy as a backdoor winner for ROY.   Hurts could sneak in as OPOY while Pickens could manage the ROY (as he played a full season with a new guy at QB).

HOF: Joe Thomas, Revis, Ware, Willis, Johnson

The only NFL honors I ever care about are the Walter Payton Award (I like to see good people get recognized) and the HOF announcements.  Last year it was the excitement of Leroy Butler getting that long-deserved honor and this year I'm waiting to hear that the best offensive lineman ever to come out of the University of Wisconsin has made it.

Not even the NFL can get a memorial segment right.

STOP focusing on the singers and put ALL the pictures of those who died in the past year full-screen.  Why is this so difficult?

Not a surprise at all - Joe Thomas is in the HOF.  Seems like just yesterday I was watching him at Camp Randall Stadium.  Let's all jump around!

Despite Joe Thomas thinking Pittsburgh would be 4th for a long time in their division (which hasn't happened ever, since 2002), I sorta feel bad for Joe.  While I don't know or think he plays every snap in his career pre-IR, there were a ton of teams that could've used him toward success (from the playoffs to a Super Bowl title).

Happy for Revis.  Not happy for Mahomes.  Not bitter either; it is just that Patrick winning the top award is comparable to being half miserable that it's Tuesday over Monday in a typical M-F, 9 to 5 work week

Jalen went out, and Philly lost the next two games.  He came back, and they’re in the Super Bowl.  How is that not MVP-worthy?

Joe Thomas was almost traded to Denver the year they won the Super Bowl with Peyton, and was relieved when he wasn’t traded, and then won 1 game in two years with Cleveland.  Oof.

I backed Justin Guarini on “American Idol”, but I cannot deny that Kelly has pipes.  Twitter troglodytes didn’t like her or her silly dress, but I thought she was funny.
