I think we can figure out why this show didn't do anything with Marcus and a potential white love interest(they could've casted a black love interest if that was an issue) but they didn't care about him beyond being a supporting role at best. The show missed an opportunity to bring back Marcus on some level. They could've told us he got married had a couple of daughters one was a doctor just like him the other was rough around the edges.(kind of like Steve).  They arrive in Salem Lani could have competition of another female being interested in Eli or they could be paired with any guy on this show.  Steve/Kayla treat them as their own since this is the only thing they have to remember Marcus since he passed away.  The show would be slightly less incestuous and have diversity. This isn't hard to write.

HT and MA were really good friends in RL so I could see a Jack/Marina pairing(well the old angsty and conflicted Jack) and given Jack's friendship with her sister it would've been interesting to see Isabella be conflicted over it given her unpleasant history with Marina etc.

I don't for the life of me remember any scenes between Jack and Marina.  I'm intrigued.

I could envision a scenario where Jack in his self-hatred mode having a tryst with Marina while pushing Jennifer away.. Marina could decide that Steve is no longer the man for her and make a go at it with Jack. I could see Carly and Jennifer teaming up to get the goods on Marina.

Marina was long gone by then, though.  Wasn't she brought on the show to basically die?

Jack was anti-Marina and was trying to get goods on her to defend and protect Stayla. There is a scene in the hospital between Jack and Marina, my goodness! the heat..

Canaryfan98, thank you for this clip. I loved seeing Stayla and their first meeting with Benji, it brought back so many memories.  Benji should never have been killed off and Stayla should have raised him as their own.  Roman and Diana, I loved them so, they were such a fun couple who enjoyed each other, I loved their humor and they were a wonderful respite from the drama filled Roman/Marlena.. I am intrigued to know what was up with Roman's memory, what was going to be the original story had they not retcon Drake's roman.  Drake's Roman was such a hottie, It was cool seeing Lexie as a cop before she was brought back as a doctor.

I have a "whatever happened to..." question:

Whatever happened to all the nice old sets?  Does anyone still live in the Horton House, with the living room and entryway?  That was an iconic set, and I haven't seen it in many months!  Bo and Hope's house was a great living room, and they used to even have a kitchen.  Why does Hope now have only a closet-sized den?  What happened to that loft apartment where all the annoying college kids lived (Ciara, Claire, Tripp, etc.) and why doesn't anyone still live there?  And why does everyone just live at the Salem Inn????

Sorry, I guess that turned into a mini-rant.  But seriously... whatever happened to the nice, spacious sets?

More cost-cutting measures? That's the only thing I can think of. Maybe a necessity to keeping DAYS on the air, but it really does make the show look and feel incredibly cheap.

They really should've had Lucas Adams play Benji instead of Tripp.. There's no point in giving Steve a long lost son with Ava. This would've been a better use of history and Benjy would still be unrelated to most of Salem.

I also liked Roman/Diana(before they ruined her and made her crazy) I mean my fave role of GF's will always be Laura Spencer but I liked Diana too.

These clips were more interesting to watch than the current material.. granted there were more sets and a budget but still they used to build up a story they don't do that anymore(and I think despite a bad budget that can still be done with a good writer)

Lucas Adams should have been cast as either Joey Kiriakis or Joey Johnson.

Ron ruined Diana and Anjelica.. I really despise him for ruining them for  stupid storylines.. Diana did not need to come back and Anjelica could have been used to introduce Alexander Neil Kiriakis, Justin's first son..

The show back then was better because they had great writers, look at how they wove Stayla's ability with sign language into their new story with Benji.  It goes to show you that the deaf storyline that was not planned still reverberated..

I think that's why I hold the 80s in such high regard there were storylines that left a lot to be desired and certain aspects did not age well but the characters weren't so one dimensional they seemed like actual people instead of cardboard cutouts. Which is what we see today.

Kayla as COS could've asked for the hospital to be more friendly towards deaf people because she was deaf at one point herself..  this could've been a storyline she could've had while Steve was MIA instead of having her be shown as this incompetent doctor over and over again.

Ahh. that playlist.  Even stories that sucked could lead to good umbrella stuff.  Marina was a sucky story for Steve and Kayla; although things improved once she died.

But it brought Isabella and the Isabella/Jack friendship and the Isabella/John romance.  It brought the mystery about the key.  It led to the Cruise of Deception.  There was fun earlyish Jack and Jenn stuff.

I think it might be 100 in the playlist.

Seeing some of that stuff does have my mind speculating.

Oh my god, that playlist is gold!! This is from late 1988, which is around the time 8 year old me started watching with my older sister but I don't really remember these scenes, so all of this is basically new to me. These are the scenes I've been longing to see but can never find: Steve, Jack, Kayla, Jo! 😀 The Johnsons were so screwed up and full of anger & guilt & sadness it's a miracle they managed to put everything behind them and become a family. I know what I will be watching for the next few days.

I think it had to have been; maybe they couldn't afford to even rent that much studio space anymore and had to downsize.  But I agree - it looks VERY cheap.

I was surprised I was able to find it considering how YT wiped out most of the Days stuff through the years. However watching this really makes me more disappointed watching current Days you can write decent family drama and not have all these shock value plot points that add very little value.

It's amazing how well the old stuff holds up. Ok, not the fashion but the stories and the dialogue is still solid. I'm not going past June 1990 because that's when the show starting to really suck IMO. I like parts of it but the desparation was showing.

This was back when they were in their first marriages not sure if that's the case now. They bonded over both their daughters having retinoblastoma. HT was able to discover it in her daughter when MA brought awareness to the disease and she noticed the same symptoms.

Heather Tom was never on Days although she did write an Op-Ed to a soap mag(I think SOD) years ago calling out JER for how terrible it was to write that Mimi was barren because she had an abortion(course that's a moot point now as Rex knocked Mimi up with Emily). I just remembered this.

Oh God I forgot about that Mimi abortion storyline. Good for Heather Tom. I made the conscious decision to stop watching Days regularly when Mimi was sobbing and said, "I killed my baby. I killed *our* baby." All My Children did a more progressive abortion storyline in 1973 than Days did in 2005 (I think that's around when it happened).

And then they retconned that All My Children abortion in a twist that I can say was only topped by "Jessica Kiddie Pornstar Retcon" on One Life in terms of offensive soap retcons. God though, I was pretty pissed about the Mimi storyline.

JER was a very conservative catholic and he incorporated a lot of Catholicism in the show.  I really despised his Madonna/Whore complex when writing for women..

I think you meant Steven Hawk .

Lucas Adams should have been cast as  Steven Hawk ,son of Benjy Hawk and his wife Sonja .

steven hawk could have easily been lured to salem after finding out that Andre Dimera (the man who murdered Benjy ) was still alive. Steven would have been on his way to  salem to get revenge on andre.

they could have easily had sonja frantically calling Steve and Kayla and telling them that Steven took his grandfather ,Orion's guns and is sneaking his way to salem to kill andre. then steve and kayla go on a road trip to search for steven and find him before he does carry out his revenge mission and ending up ruining his life in the process. and guess what ?

John would have joined them on this road trip. why ? because John received all his assassin/mercenary training from Orion Hawk , who was Stefano's goon and traininer of his hitmen/mercenaries such as John and Drew Donovan (SHane's twin brother ) . this would have solidified Steve as John's new BFF.

Anyway,John would have gladly gone along with them on the road trip out of respect for Orion, his former mentor , who walked away from Stefano and took custody of his grandson Benjy and left for Europe .

oh yes,Orion is the old man on that video clip who got arrested by Abe .

But nah , we got a road trip where steve and kayla searched for the latest fake long lost "legacy "kid known as Tripp . Ugh1111

lucas shared quite a resemblance with Jim Lunsford ,who played adult Benjy . Instead of Tripp trying to kill Kayla , we could have had Steven trying to kill Andre , which would make sense .

plus Steven Hawk would have been like a defacto second son for steve and kayla . steve and kayla lost out on on raising benjy when benjy's grandad took him but Steven would have been steve and kayla's second chance with benjy somewhat . steven would have been staying with steve and kayla in salem and they would have been like his foster parents.

Exactly. I would love to see ,perhaps, Marcus's daughters coming to Salem and staying with aunt kayla and uncle steve, stephanie and  steven hawk .

the show would do well by casting Felisha Cooper as Marcus's daughter , who comes to salem to intern at the salem hospital.as she is an aspiring doctor like her dad . Felisha was on B&B as Maya's half sister I think .

then cast another actress as Marcus's  younger daughter.

not every black character should be related to Abe .

As for Marcus , they could explain that he died offscreen circa 2008-2010 when Steve and Kayla were off the show.

anyway ,let me bring those who have no idea who Marcus was up to speed .

Here is a pic of Steve and Kayla's iconic first wedding . now look at Steve's best men. right next to steve we got Marcus ,followed by "Roman" ,then right after "roman" we got Shane Donovan and the short guy at the tail end is Frankie Brady .

No I remember that, too.  That was an unfortunate event that led to a fortunate one (MA being hired).

I am specifically thinking of gossip around 1989-90 that there was friction between HT and SN on the set.  I remember SN's acting style at that time was very "hands on," so maybe she misinterpreted that for harassment.  I don't know but I'm pretty sure they didn't like one another at the time.  Maybe someone else remembers this, too, or maybe I'm experiencing the Mandela effect.  Lol

No HT mentioned in her book that he made some moves on her etc I believe he said it wasn't true. Its in her Wikipedia

Quote

She played Marina Toscano on Days of Our Lives from 1989 to 1990, only to be fired after series star Stephen Nichols reportedly made sexual advances toward her; after she turned him down, Hunter claims, the show wrote her out when Nichols played his character as if he were annoyed by her presence. This story has not been corroborated by anyone except Tylo herself, in her autobiography.

She also mentioned that her and her husband at the time Michael Tylo did the wife swap thing with Kimberlin Brown and her husband. KB said it wasn't true but I actually believe HT here.

Hunter Tylo has always come off nuts, entitled and self-important.. She was also part of an extreme Christian sect, people like that scares me, using your religion to justify your bigotry... I will never understand that mindset...

I looked it up in Miss Hunter Tylo's book (thanks, Google books) and girlfriend doesn't come right out and say he harassed her. She says he came into her dressing room in character and was less than pleased when HT didn't swoon or something. Bear in mind that HT also says her husband, Michael Tylo (Quenton!) came to the studio the first day to "spread his scent around." So my vote is that the Tylos are both BSC. HT loves to spill everyone else's tea in that book without ever copping to doing anything wrong herself.

I've never heard of SN being accused of being handsy or whatever. If we was going to start with the actress whose husband may have been peeing in corners to demonstrate his ownership then I've gotta question his timing.

I've long heard the stories about one of the first Jack's being fired for some sort of harassment toward MBE. It would make sense if it was Jack #1 since a) he looked like he was related to the Johnson clan and b) was an ok actor. Jack #2 didn't deliver on A or B so why wait until he hit on a very pregnant MBE to kick him to the curb? If the story is true, it's Jack #1 and Jack #2 was a temp until they could find another "actor" as opposed to Jack #2 who was "a guy who can read lines and not bump into scenery without actually being able to act."

THIS!  I've been back watching about 7 months and I'm still not sure where Jack & Jennifer live. They are always at the Dimera Mansion which seem ridiculously out of character, not to mention hypocritical given how much I recall Jenn shaming Sami for living there w/EJ.   I'm also still scratching my head why Hope's den is like a 1 room house.  And I roll my eyes at the number of grown adults still mooching living at the Kiriakis mansion and the number of advisories living at Shay Dimera, a supposedly huge house yet everyone uses the same rooms.  I also have to think that the Salem Inn must have monthly rates akin to a cheap motel the way that Ciara and Ben moved in and never left.  I wonder if a gift certificate to there was on their wedding registry?

I never thought I'd say this but I think I actually miss the Salem pier. It was completely overused back in the 80's but hey at least it made more sense to have clandestine meetings there (fog) or conduct murders as opposed to the not very family friendly Salem park in walking distance of town square shopping center.

Jack and Jen live at the Dimera Mansion.  They moved in when Abby went to Florida for treatment so that they could care for their grandchildren.  Why the grandchildren couldn't move in to the Horton house that would have plenty of room for the four of them is beyond me!  I fear that they have done away with that set permanently, which really is a shame since it was a classic.

I agree about the pier and the park.  I recall seeing the pier a few years ago - not that long ago - and had hope that it would come back permanently, but clearly not.  That little catch-all park/cemetery/town square/secret meeting spot is so laughable.  The plants don't even look real.

I thought J&J staying at the DiMera mansion was only temporary while they watched their grandchildren, but now that Abby's back they still seem to be living there. Which is so dumb because they should be living in the Horton house with Julie & Doug (I think that's where they live?), and Lucas should live there too. If the show got rid of the Horton house it was only recently because the extended clan spent Christmas there last year. They really should bring the Horton house out of storage and retire some of the crappier sets (Hope's den/house; that lone Salem Inn room).

I hated that pier so much. It seemed like every episode people would bump into each at the pier while out running errands or heading to a meeting or work. Like, who the hell takes a shortcut through a pier? But, now, after being subjected to the crappy itty bitty park with its lone bench, I miss the stupid pier and its stairs & fishing nets, even if people were always getting beat up there.

I agree about the pier and the park.  I recall seeing the pier a few years ago - not that long ago - and had hope that it would come back permanently, but clearly not.  That little catch-all park/cemetery/town square/secret meeting spot is so laughable.  The plants don't even look real.

I seem to recall the pier (though slightly different) popped up again around the time of the Necktie Killer and Chad being hypnotized, maybe??? I was only about "half" watching then.

Agree, the fake greenery and astroturf grass of the park is awful. I feel as if Days should avoid it as much as possible unless they plan on hosting Brady Bunch style tay sack races.  Poor Bo who had to die there. Convenient for Hope though since the cemetery is only steps away.

I've never really liked Horton Town Square because I can never figure out if it's supposed to be outside or partially enclosed. It gets far too much use in the winter months for me to not side eye it being a completely outdoor area. Even the pier used to get fake snow around the holidays and people would stand around shivering and blowing on their hands to stay warm. But at the town square they bop around like it's an indoor shopping mall.

Oh yes, I remember thinking that too about the pier too. It was supposed to be in a not so great section of Salem, near the Brady Fish market, Emergency Center, and probably Kayla's loft, but the way everyone just took casual strolls there it appeared to also be near the hospital and every other set in town. I still remember Alice in her jogging suit doing a morning power walk, which seemed like an odd place for an old lady to exercise given the the beat-downs, stabbings, and kidnappings that took place down there. But now I'm kinda nostalgic for it and the 'ding ding' bell and foghorn that was always heard. Surely Days still has the budget for that generic background soundtrack.

I miss Salem Place it looked so spacious compared to the claustrophobic sets we see today.

I miss Marlena's penthouse that she shared with John and I also loved the home that she shared with Roman, then, Rojohn.  Rojohn raised the kids there and when Roman and Marlena came back, they moved back in with the twins.

This comes up every few months, but Horton Town Square in an indoor shopping mall. It's stupid because the show sometimes forgets about that by inserting Murder Park near it.

I was just going to say this.  I remember that Sami got married there in the dead of winter (don't ask which marriage, I have no idea - maybe Rafe?) wearing a sleeveless or strapless dress.  It's so confusing, given that there's a tree right in the middle, and everyone walks through it to get anywhere, and all of the storefronts look like exterior storefronts, and I could go on and on...  It's just... stupid.

I didn't mean to imply SN is handsy.  When I said he was "hands on" in his acting style I just meant he touched his fellow actors a lot back then.  If you watch old clips you can see what I mean.  I don't think he meant any harm in it - it was just his interpretation of the character.

It was Jack #2 that MBE said was harassing her.

I was watching 2002 Last Blast era clips and marveled at how much more money the show used to have. There was this great outdoor shopping mall scene where everyone is trying to keep cheerful and hopeful about Chloe's cancer operation being successful. They were really outside in an actual outdoor seating restaurant and what looked like a full on mall complex. I keep thinking it was TexMex.

Sorry for any confusion, handsy was my word.  Didn't think you were "accusing" SN of anything, btw.

Jack #2 for real? Can't act and can't be trusted in a dark room. That's just not a good combo for an aspiring thespian.

Oh no worries!  I just wanted to clarify what I meant.  :)

I guess there's several good reasons we've never seen Jack #2 again.  I can't imagine MBE having to do the rape storyline with that guy.  Would have been awful for her!  I'm glad she felt comfortable enough to speak out against his behavior at the time instead of just putting up with it.

Whatever happened to Johnny Stockton ? He was Marlena 's ward at some point back in 1982. He was a less than 10 years old I believe .

Then again ,if Marlena doesnt give a damn about Kevin Cates ,who was on the show circa 1985 , i doubt she even cares where Johnny is today .

I don't know if it's the same one, but I remember an outdoor set from the 90s, too.  There was an ice cream shop, maybe?  Or a coffee shop?  I forget, but there was a real parking lot. . . and real sunlight!  And to go back even further, remember when they had real shots of Bo and Hope and baby Shawn on a real boat that was really sailing in real water??  That, compared to now, is mind-blowing.  (Yet, it's what any prime-time show would do without even blinking.)
