I see it all the time. You can tell when they understand because you can see their body language before the interpreter even translates. I’ll even see players being interviewed, where they’re asked a question, will immediately start answering in Spanish, then the interpreter answers in English.

I wonder if that’s why Shohei always has his interpreter around him. He clearly understands most of what is said around him and his English is pretty good, but with how many endorsements and dollar signs attached to his image he can’t afford something to be screwed up in translation or context.

Probably, but when you're viewed as the best (or at least one of the best) players then people are going to cut you a lot more slack.  If he were to throw a tantrum then a lot of fans would be talking about how impressed they are by his passion.  But if a marginal player does it?  What a cancer, dump the bum.

So Josh Gibson now holds the MLB record for highest batting average at .372.   How many MLB games did he play?  That would be ZERO.   MLB records should be reserved for individuals who actually played in MLB.   This sounds like something Manfred would think up to continue his destruction of baseball.

Ty Cobb, is that you?

This isn't the first time MLB has pulled in records from a long-gone league. From thehill.com...

Quote

A special committee on baseball records decided in 1969 to recognize six major leagues dating back to 1876: the National (which launched in 1876), the American (1901), the American Association (1882-1891), Union Association (1884), Players’ League (1890) and Federal League (1914-1915).

Cobb probably would have had no issue with this. Much of what is believed about him - spread far and wide in the Burns documentary - is suspect at best.

I just read Tony Posnanski’s “Why We Love Baseball” (EXCELLENT book, everyone should read it) and he mentioned that a lot of what was previously said about Ty Cobb has come under scrutiny.  And Ty Cobb’s family was very gracious this week.  Doesn’t mean there isn’t some truth there, but maybe not *quite* as bad as we thought.

And I want to be friends with Josh Gibson’s great-grandson.

I don’t think bring in Negro League stats should be a problem.  I mean we are comparing thousands of players, most of whom never directly competed against each other.  Babe Ruth might have been a .200 hitter had his contemporaries been Bob Gibson or Nolan Ryan or Justin Verlander.   Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson never played night games.  Pre-1950 (at least), most players couldn’t train year ‘round because they had to work actual jobs during the off-season.  Is it fair to compare stats from 154 game seasons with current longer seasons?  The advances in equipment, playing surfaces, training facilities & methods, medical treatment, etc., make any comparison overs decades, let alone a century+, questionable.

I completely agree with all that you've said here, but I'd just like to add something to the part I put in bold letters. Babe Ruth might have been a lesser hitter if he would have had to face his actual contemporary pitchers of color like Satchel Paige or Martín Dihigo! You're right though, that there's no way to accurately compare across different eras.

The time period of professional baseball where players of color were segregated from white players taints the entire sport irrevocably. Adding the statistics of the Negro Leagues to MLB statistics is one of the few measures available that can lessen the stench just a trifle. It's a no brainer.

I absolutely love that! I still remember watching Straw's first game for the Mets as a young rookie called up all those years ago.

So you're telling me today's pitchers aren't a bunch of wimps because Cy Young threw 749 complete games in his career while the entire league only threw 35 last year?

Willmer Flores’s walk up song is “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts because he learned English while watching “Friends”.  That is adorable.

If Cy Young were playing today, it's extremely unlikely he'd be throwing complete games. He benefited from an era in which hitters were far less prepared, for one thing. It's just much tougher to get through the order multiple times without giving up more runs, and a team's goal is to win games, not to get their starting pitchers complete games for pitchers' bragging rights. Pitchers don't throw complete games anymore not because they're wimps, but because it usually doesn't maximize win probability.

I LOVE Aaron Judge.  Love love love him.  I have two Judge jerseys and none for anyone else.

And yet.

Yet.

When I read this tweet, the first person I thought of was Derek Jeter.

Rhys Hoskins stealing a base then getting thrown out at home in his return to Philly is why we watch baseball.

It was so good. Rhys looking right at Realmuto with a grin then Realmuto laughing when he got him out at home.

Baseball is the Best.♥️

I totally adore Judge* and never warmed to Jeter as a person at all (even though he was undoubtedly a great player), but even I do a mental double take when they call Judge The Captain.

*Judge is probably my third favorite baseball player after Eddie Murray (forever Number One) and Mariano Rivera, but he’s definitely the most exciting player I’ve rooted for.  I also think he seems like a lovely, genuine guy.

I'm not even a Yankee fan, and I think of Jeter as "the Captain".

(Probably because of an ad they run incessantly for MLB the Show when I stream games on  MLB.) 😆

I think Phillies and Mets fans can both agree this is a monstrosity.

This must be merch in London, right? Commemorative or not, I can't imagine any one who's a fan of ANY team in MLB who would purchase a travesty like this!

Soto's been dealing with discomfort for a week, and they're just now going to send him for imaging? I see the crack Yankees' medical staff is in mid-season form. 🙄

We don’t have a cricket thread (that I know of), so am posting this found art from X, here.

I almost married a guy who played it semi-pro, and I swear to God I said something very like this to him once:

Apologies for swarming the thread with some additional Soto tweets from the Yankees' beat writers, but I know I can't be the only fan freaking out about a potential Soto injury. A little more info since my last post.

Well fuck.

Well said.

At the beginning of the game, I noticed Teoscar Hernandez in the Dodgers lineup. I'd lost track of what team he was on but he's always been a Yankee killer. In my mind I was thinking, I'm not as concerned about Ohtani, Betts and Freeman; they've got to get Teoscar out. Sigh.

I certainly didn't like the way it ended, but it was a pretty incredible game.

The “Let’s Go Dodgers” chants that were not shot down with a quickness last night were one thing.  But to have a police escort for a bunch of Dodgers fans marching through THE BRONX?  That shit should not happen.

Well, to be fair this is the most animated I've seen Skankee Stadium all season. They're usually so blasé, better than you. Nice to see they actually care.  Although needing a police escort is a bridge too far.

WOW, you weren’t kidding. What a series so far for him.

Nice to see the Mets salvage a split across the pond.

I can say, without reservation, after watching the two London games, that I hope never to see the Phillie Phanatic again. It got WAY TOO MUCH camera time, and maybe it's the Mets fan in me being cranky, but the whole act is just not funny. The announcers sure didn't agree with me, as they laughed like a bunch of meth addled hyenas the whole time.

No sign of Mr. Met. He mustn't have made the trip...

I swear that I saw a pic of Mr. and Mrs. Met outside Buckingham Palace with the Phanatic.

If anyone felt like making a movie of the Yankees and Dodgers series, Tyler Glasnow would be played by Cillian Murphy.  Has anyone ever seen them in the same room at the same time?

I think this is the first time I've "watched" Gameday on the MLB website and I see they have a drawing of the field with the positions in little rectangles and a small white dot being "thrown" around by the "rectangular" players with each play.  And at the end of the inning, the little rectangles "run" off the field.  It's hilarious.

ETA:  It's the first time I've watched this season, which is why I noticed the new stuff.  It's labeled "beta" so maybe they're just testing it out.  Whatever they decide, it amused me no end.

The really hilarious ones are for Detroit, with the tire treads on it, that make the players all look like they’ve been run over by a car.

Gunnar Henderson is good at baseball.

And with new ownership in place, the Orioles might actually keep him instead of selling him to the highest bidder.
