Just banning it is stupid. 1 Link to comment

Hi Cleo... I am amazed that professional baseball players insist on hitting the ball into the teeth of the defense. Why not "hit it where they ain't?" Dink, bunt, poke...whatever. 3 Link to comment

I look at the players who face a dramatic shift, and it's very clear that their entire swing is grooved in to do the same thing every time. They'd have to make a big change in the way they swing to be able to hit the ball (intentionally) the other way. And nobody wants to just walk up there and attempt to bunt the ball through the left side of the infield every time up. Even though they probably should at least give it a shot once in a while. This makes me think of Wade Boggs. That was a guy who could absolutely put the ball to the left or right side if the situation called for it. 1 4 Link to comment

I do wonder if this is the result of present day hitting instruction, all the way up from Little League. Boggs, and other players of his era and earlier, seemed to have more flexibility at the plate. 2 Link to comment
Perfect Xero July 1, 2022 Share July 1, 2022 If hitters were capable of hitting the ball precisely where they want, they'd be doing it all the time regardless of the defensive alignment. Hitting just isn't that precise, you can try to hit the ball in a general direction, but aiming for a hole just isn't something you can do. MLB pitchers also aren't fooling around, anything that has a hitter disrupting their timing/swing trying to hit one in the hole at 3B isn't going to make it easier on them. Shifts that completely sell out one side of the field are very rare, so there's every chance that the guy who tries to poke one to the left side is just going to have the ball fielded anyway. Hitting grounders on the infield is not the desired outcome in first place, batters are trying to hit the ball hard and in the air. If a power hitter is trying to slap one on the ground rather than trying to hit one to the outfield gap or stands, that's usually a win for the defense. Why not bunt? Pitchers are throwing 95+ with sharp movement, if the defense is aligned in a shift they're not going to toss one slow and away and make it easy to bunt. If you're not already a skilled bunter you're probably just going to find yourself down a couple of strikes. 4 Link to comment

cleo July 1, 2022 Share July 1, 2022 His job is to make the owners money; for most of them it's just an investment. So sometimes actually improving/supporting the sport aligns with that interest. Moose135 July 2, 2022 Share July 2, 2022 (edited) Last night, I settled in to watch a little TV, and thought "Damn, the Mets are on Apple TV..." - mind you, I don't pay for MLB TV nor do I have a local sports network to watch either, but some games end up in places I can watch. I went to mlb.com on my iPad to check on the game, and it gave me the option to watch on my iPad. Once I had the game on (it was around the 5th inning) I tried casting it to the TV. Sure enough, I was able to watch on the big screen, all without an Apple+ account! It might be an option of those of you who want to watch without jumping through too many hoops. Xeliou66 July 2, 2022 Share July 2, 2022 Does anyone else think the AL playoffs are pretty much set at this point? I think the AL East will get 4 teams in, which is crazy, with the Astros and Twins as the other 2 teams. I’m not sure who else could get in, maybe the Guardians or White Sox could get in, but I think we will see the Yankees, Rays, Jays and Red Sox all in the playoffs. I would like seeing a Yankees/Astros ALCS, that would be exciting, and I think there’s a good chance of that happening. 1 Link to comment

Arenado and Goldschmidt are 2 of the best hitters in MLB right now, the Cards have some real power but I don’t know if their pitching is good enough for them to have success in the playoffs. xaxat July 6, 2022 Share July 6, 2022 (edited) I have the MLB radio app. I don't live in Pittsburgh, my favorite team's market, so I don't get blacked out on their broadcasts. Neat! However, there is a rain delay tonight. I tried to listen to the stream of their local radio internet broadcast, which is currently not broadcasting baseball because, you know, rain delay, and I was blacked out! All I wanted to do was listen to a couple of guys talking about the weather radar and some bad takes from callers so I can tell when the game is going to start, but nope. MLB thinks that freely allowing that content might constitute an existential threat to their business model. Edited July 7, 2022 by xaxat 2 Link to comment
