So really...one of the few days I'm home "working" from my couch...and this is the game that has to be on MLBN??

I can't stand Michael Kay...  and yet, it's still on my TV.  Go figure.  I guess Yankee baseball is better than no baseball - barely.  ;-)

I'm really glad then that MLB Network was blacked out for me then, I got to watch on Sun Sports, but then realized I had Extra Innings so I think I went and watched the Detroit/Boston game.

Syndergaard rolling away on the Phanatics pilfered wheels is adorable.  I saw a gif on Twitter so I cannot link but it's so cute if you find it.

I hope the Phanatic washes all the Mets Cooties off his ATV??.

The ceremony itself was awesome, but the fact that it didn't end in a closeup of the World Series Championship banner--the BIG one, after raising four--was a VERY anticlimactic moment to an otherwise great event.

Rizzo raising the trophy on the field was GREAT, though.

I think they didn't show a closeup because it got stuck about half-way up for awhile.  Hey, obviously we are out of practice for these things!!! I agree that cranking the music in the stadium and then the guys from last year walking out from the outfield with the trophy was awesome.

Also, it was fun that they showed the David Ross dance from DWTS on the videoboards during the rain delay before the game.  He is a charming man and deserves all the fun he is having in retirement:)

Finally, I'm a bit concerned that making the Dodgers wait for all that, as well as the ring ceremony on Wednesday, could karmically bite us in the ass at the end of this season (although the Cubs aren't responsible for who is scheduled when).

ETA:  Great sign work at Wrigley tonight

Will this do? I'm hoping a gang of mascots doesn't try to break Thor's arm at the All-Star Game. I think the San Diego Chicken would come out of retirement just for that job.

I was at a Passover seder last night and missed the ceremony.

Why is this night different from all other nights?  Because on this night I drove two hours each way (after working a full day) and missed all the Cubs fun.

It was the Opening Night at Wrigley Field, and they raised four banners: two for their first WS titles (1907 and 1908), one for winning the NLCS last year, and the last for the World Series Championship itself. As the WS banner was being raised, it got stuck (plus the wind was getting in the way, too), and ESPN cut away as the flag was still going up, and THEN briefly cut away from commercial. I just feel like, after 108 years, ESPN would know how big this is and not cut away like that.

Whoever got this video last night did a GREAT job. VERY good seats. This lets us see what we missed when the camera left the WS flag and then cut to a brief commercial shortly after (admittedly not much--the flag didn't get much of a shot on the Jumbotron at first because the smoke from the fireworks obscured so much--but it was worth seeing it to me).

Dammit, Buster Posey was just beaned in the head with a 93mph pitch and left the game. Be ok, Buster!

DL for Buster. With the Giants recent history with concussions, I'm actually relieved to see this. They've lost guys to concussions for significant amounts of time every season for the past few years, and many times, it's because they felt "fine" and played too soon. A DL trip for Buster means they can't be tempted to slide him into a game because he feels alright, only to have symptoms come on later. It also helps that the Giants actually have two backup catchers with NL West experience this season. Hopefully a week is enough and he comes back good as new!

Buster Posey is on the seven day concussion protocol DL, although he says he's doing okay.  Speculation is he'll be back in time for the interleague series in Kansas City, and that he'll be the DH there.

Aaron Judge nearly took the head off the Rays pitcher with a screaming 115 mph line drive.  Later in the inning Brett Gardner had a horrific collision with Rays 1B Rickey Weeks that took them both out.  Michael described it as a football hit without pads and that's exactly what it looked like.

mojo, saw the collision and Boy, are they gonna be sore tomorrow. Joey G said Gardner will likely not play tomorrow and he won't attend tonights' Yankee Homecoming event which all players attend (charity event). Sore jaw and strained neck. I reckon they will go through concussion protocol even though he didn't seem to hit his head. Did you notice how Gardner got up to touch the bag before laying back down on the ground? Funny moment.

Not sure how Weeks is doing. I think they said his shoulder/arm was hurt.

Good gosh a'mighty, did you see Judge's HR? Monument Park 437 feet (I think) and stuck in the netting. Not sure if you saw the interview with Meredith M. but he is all about the team and his team mates efforts. Whenever she asked him about his day he would turn away as if to think about what to say and just praise everyone. He's kind of endearing. I really hope he has a good season. The big lug. And I say that affectionately.

ESPN has been running a promo for Saturday's Jackie Robinson Day as it is the 70th anniversary of his entry into the league and every time I hear the ad, I get chills.  I can't decide if that's weird or not.

My out of town sibling, who sometimes uses my house as a free hotel when visiting NYC, usually compensates me for my hospitality with Yankees tickets.  This summer, we're going to Old Timers Day! I'm getting pretty geeked out, I'll admit.

I went to that last year! Hideki Matsui hit a homer off of David Cone, it was great!

Mets just beat the Marlins in 16 innings. Luckily, they're not playing a day game tomorrow. In a situation like that, why drive back home or to the hotel? Home team gets their choice of which half on the field to sleep on.

A public plea to Jacoby Ellsbury -

Jacoby, please don't try to see if Yadier Molina still has it.  Because I'm pretty sure he does, but I'm not so sure that you still do.  If you get to first, please stay there.*

*I reserve the right to change my mind if he steals a base

Mets Fan: The team is on a hot streak. Sure, a few parts are malfunctioning, but nothing is flying off. That means the other shoe drops in three, two . . .

Daily News: EX-MISTRESS: REYES HAD ROAD FAMILY!

Mets Fan: Damn it, Jose. Didn't you learn anything from Bart?!?

Jose Reyes: Does this mean you guys won't be giving away my t-shirt next Friday?

Mets Management: Not only that, but we will be burning all of those in center field. And you'll be in the middle of that.

The A's had a no hitter going through six innings, although they had given up two runs, five walks, two errors on one play, and a HBP.  But since then, they've given up a hit and are just holding on 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh.

The Braves have their home season opener tonight in the new Unnecessary Suburbia Park and I couldn't care less.

I heard abot that when the Yanks played the last Spring Training game. Was there an attendance problem at Turner Field? I know the team has been pretty bad in recent seasons but I think one of the announcers (Michael Kay) said that the fan base was more suburban than downtown.

True?

Link to comment

Honestly I don't know the real reason for the move as I've heard plenty of excuses from there not being anything to do near Turner Field (that didn't seem to be a problem before, and the old Fulton County Stadium was on the same spot) to making it closer to the season ticket holder fan base, who tends to be suburban.  Now they have a new stadium at taxpayer expense that is at a crossroads of two major intersections where traffic is a nightmare on a good day, at they're technically no longer the Atlanta Braves since I don't believe the stadium is within city limits.

Money.

Start with the names of the stadiums. There were no naming rights revenues from Turner Field. Now it's believed that Suntrust is paying ten million dollars to have their name on the new building. They were able to increase the number of "premium" seats, some of which are double the price of their equivalents at Turner. On average ticket prices went up 45%. They tried give themselves a monopoly on parking by getting Cobb County to ban all nearby non Braves controlled lots. They got a lease deal that put made a lot of the cost over runs responsibility of Cobb County, pushing the original proposal of $300 million to $400 million.

You can read all of the gory details at Field of Schemes

(And the Cobb County elected officials knew the deal wouldn't be popular with taxpayers. Hiding out in hallways during meetings to circumvent public records laws.)

Sigh, not looking good for the Jays so far. So many injuries and the team is not producing right now.

They aren't making it easy to watch them right now, especially since the Leafs are in the playoffs this spring.

In the "You Learn Something New Every Day Department" the last time St. Louis played at Yankee Stadium was in 2003, and the two catchers on the roster for the Cardinals were Mike Metheny and Joe Girardi.

Question for Mets fans: when does Familia come back? The team has lost three straight, including two walk-offs and an eighth inning barrage that counts as the Marlins' last at-bat.

A Google search ways he's eligible to come back April 20th.  I emphasize Google search because I don't want anyone to think I'm a Mets fan.  Ever.

Yes, Familia is eligible to return on April 20.  He pitched an inning for the St. Lucie Mets on Saturday, and is scheduled to pitch for Binghamton on Monday to prepare for his return.

What's so bad about that? The Mets aren't as high-and-mighty as the Yankees, and the fans are rarely elitist. I don't think the Mets are in the same class of "cursed" as the Red Sox and Cubs were, but it is a bit of a starcrossed franchise. It does make for good history. I think a movie could be made about their pennant-winning season in 1973. Gotta show everybody that the Phillies never owned "Ya Gotta Believe!" at any point.

I saw that series(because it was the first time Girardi and Tino Martinez had returned to Yankee Stadium since they'd left).  Clemens got his 300th win in one of those games.

I tried to watch the game yesterday but it was too painful. The hitting was not great last year either, but they squeaked by because of the great pitching. I'm afraid they are going to be decimated this year.

Steve Pearce looked so upset yesterday, I thought he was crying at one point.

If the Jays can't take the ALE, I'm rooting for Boston. Or any team that is not New York or Baltimore.

It's still SO early. I'm not just saying this because my team is having a slow start. It really is SO early. You don't want to see a team get too deep into a hole but right now, the team with the most wins is the Colorado Rockies. No offense to the Rockies, who have great players, or their fans, who hang on every season, but they do this every year. One year, they'll do it for good again but are the Reds and the Marlins and the Rockies going to win their divisions? Probably not. The beginning of the season is great because every team has a chance. The teams that aren't that great, the teams that start slow, the teams that are projected to do well!

As for me specifically, I keep in mind that the Giants started 3-9 in 2015 and stayed competitive all season. The 2014 Pirates were 10 games under .500 in May and still ended the season 14 games over with a playoff spot! And there's plenty more like this. Breaaaathe everyone. It's early yet.
