Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

I'm always suspect of these Reddit threads. My first question is why would the Rods need a babysitter? And how would a babysitter get so much info? Did she babysit when the parents were home??

If it's true Anna made fun of Nurie's dress, then that's really cruel. I'm glad the pastor's wife told her off.

Especially since Anna’s own wedding dress was laughable. And her outfit at Nurie’s wedding was just as bad.

I’m skeptical about the information. However, these large families have a lot of hangers on. Laura, Tabitha, and the Hawaiian dude with the Duggars, cousin Emily with Anna. The Duggars had four J-slaves no need for extra people.

The way it sounded, the majority of her time was when David wasn’t there, as in he was in the printing shop. But she also said she got stuck there a few times while he did his preaching to the family into the night. Or something like that.

The reason I have doubts is, her writing really doesn’t line up with someone in graduate school. Then agin, my grandfather many times would peg some as “educated idiots”, his words, not mine. 😁

I asked that question too on Reddit. Apparently she was brought in to help homeschool and babysit the kids when Jill and some of them older kids were out helping a pastor (?) who was ill. She said she was paid very little but really liked the kids and later babysat for free because she felt for them.

I thought so too, but she also said she was using voice to text, which explains some errors. She also said she was in nursing school, and as someone who has worked with a lot of nurses, I’ve observed that many don’t seem to be the brightest and make quite a few grammatical errors.

Yes, Ohio. The poster speculates the kids have odd accents from being in Amish country.

I can see the Rods needing someone to help the kids with schoolwork. Jill and David don't appear to care about education, but there are those pesky state requirements to meet.

Does Ohio have many state requirements? She did say that education isn’t much of a priority- no surprise there!

To clarify-

This thread is to discuss Duggar adjacent families. The majority of your post should be about the adjacent family/family member in question- NOT another person’s (who is not a member of this forum, and didn’t chose to participate in this discussion) opinion of the Duggars/another adjacent family. Anyone is allowed to have any opinion they like about the Rodrigues family or anyone else.

Linking and sharing public info (like social media posts) about the family being discussed is fine. But please as a courtesy to others- black out the names/screen names of commenters.

TL;DR- sharing stuff Jill posts is fine, sharing things a Jill fan/hater might not be.

Maybe Renee's black skirt in the engagement photo is the modesty extra she had to wear under her otherwise nice pink performance dress.

Ah, Jill showed up in her heavy black stockings and black shoes. Maybe the sunlight would have been too unkind to her bare legs. Try as she might, she's just not one of the girls anymore.

Okay, now I'm totally calling BS on the so called babysitter. They haven't lived in Ohio for even three years. Tessie and Hannah, the two middle girls, would have been about 12 and 11 when they moved. The youngest four would have been between 1 - 8. Why would they need a babysitter, especially if David was on the other side of the wall in the shop, when they had two tweenagers, if Jill and the older sisters were helping(?!?!!) someone?

Also, those kids have probably not been spending a lot of time in conversation with their Amish neighbors.

The poster made it pretty clear that she met the Rods after they moved to Ohio so she wouldn't really know about their accents prior to that. I think she was just speculating about the Amish who do make up a significant portion of the community down there. The kids would have plenty of opportunity to hear them speak at stores and restaurants and even the guys who built the addition to the barndo were supposedly Amish.  I live in a city about an hour away and I can recognize an Amish accent pretty quickly, however, the Rod kids don't sound Amish to me and I agree that their speech patterns are similar to Jill's

She also said that David spends very little time at home and he's not a particularly nice guy, so I doubt he was willing to care for the kids or monitor their homeschooling if Jill wasn't around as he doesn't do wimmin's work.

The poster said she was originally hired to help with homeschooling and child care while Jill and the older girls were helping the pastor who was ill.  While I don't think much of Jill's homeschooling, they've had enough scrutiny from CPS that I could see her wanting an adult present to make sure the kids were at least attempting to work at it and putting a 12 year old in charge wouldn't look good.

I don't know if the poster is real or not, my main issue is that she reached out to the mods after her cousin told her about the Rods' presence online in the Fundie Snark section and her father encouraged her to set the record straight.  That seems a little strange to me.  I do hope she's real if only because she had nothing nice to say about the Duggars and said her father, former IFB, once punched Jim Bob.  I expect that most anyone who's ever met JB has wanted to sock him in the kisser, so I hope that's true.

The biggest red flag is the Reddit poster saying JillR was out helping someone. First Jill doesn't help others even a little bit, never mind long term, and second, if this was true, Jill would have been posting about daily.

Also, how long were they supposedly helping this pastor? All day, everyday for months on end? Because there's no need to worry about homeschooling or DCF popping in, for a short-term temporary situation. In addition to the 12 year old, there are 3 older brothers. And an adult was present as the poster said David was home.

Also if that was this poster's idea of setting the "record straight", she should get a job at the Sun. To me, in situations like this, setting the record straight is to defend someone, not add to the salacious gossip.

And don't worry about folks hating JB. I'm sure that list is very, very long.

I agree, there are a lot of red flags.  One of the biggest ones for me is that this particular poster said she reached out to the Fundie Snark reddit herself after her cousin told her about it because her father wanted her to set the record straight about the Rods.  Why?  What exactly did she feel was so wrong or unfair about their online personas?

Also, she keeps coming back and answering more and more questions.  Most AMA's will answer for an hour or two, but, then they are finished and don't continue to pop up with more answers.  Seems like she is seeing attention, IMO.

Finally, she says her family was IFB and her father was in a leadership role before they left.  But she still hangs out in those circles and is accepted?  And JRod would hire a former IFB woman, one who has a nursing degree and is attending graduate school, to be alone with her kids and participate in their schooling?  This is a woman who railed against the Moody Bible College Timbits attended because some of the professors didn't use the KJV.  I doubt she'd let a heretic who wears pants and thinks it is ok for women to be educated beyond household chores anywhere near her daughters.

The poster keeps mentioning "when David comes home." I'm curious how David could regularly be absent for long hours, only to storm in at night to lecture the kids. They live in rural Ohio. Where could he go? He doesn't have any money to socialize at the local gentlemen's clubs or drink at the dive bars. He doesn't have any friends that we know of. The idea of a woman desiring a slob with 13 kids he has no desire to support makes my brain hurt.

The original print shop was also the living room, the laundry room, the beauty shop, and the storage area until Jill and David built the addition. How much time could he have spent there by himself without someone needing to invade the space? I think David is often in the living area of the house--sleeping, eating, and drinking hummingbird food.

When he has a print job, the kids' don't need assistance with schooling because they become the free labor. When the Rods are on the road, David is in the same fishbowl as the rest of them.

Not in so many words, but it came up with her wondering where he goes when he's out.

However, it's not clear if David is/was physically away from the house or just hiding out in the print shop viewing whatever on his computer.

It seems to me any of us, or posters on other snark boards, would have had more 'success' posing as a Rod babysitter than that person did. The first mistake we would have avoided was saying we were a babysitter and saying JillR was helping someone. Two things that are very unlikely.

We could say things like every evening Jill puts FB and IG on the 'map' and reads all the hate posts to the kids. Then she shows them the Bates' and Duggars' posts and uses them as examples of the devil's pull. Then she says she wishes she would see less hate on SM and more posts of kids honoring their parents. Then one of the kids volunteers to write a Best Mama post.

the whole thing was rather strange. David came home from wherever or was in the print shop probably looking at porn. both were stated.

Tim is weird, but not creepy weird, but his family makes fun of him and says he will never get married because he's creepy weird and dumb.

Tim "helps" the children with school. Like when? he has posted on "working his but off" (sic) to be working for himself with the godly handyman service, A fail. Recently has posted about working 90-100 hours a week....

Person and family have left that religion or whatever, but stays in contact with the rod kids when she sees them at church.

Claimed there was tons of food and the protein served at dinner Jill has posted pics of her meals. by no stretch can it be called enough for a family that size. not even enough bread shown for 1 slice per kid.

I call BS on David somehow controlling Jill's phone or Jill at all. If he was, and he is so into the girls being pretty and submissive, what does he think of all that filming of them acting ridiculous riding children's rides on girl's night at the mall with mama etc. Also, often when Jill films, she shows Kaylee, Renee and Tessie filming the same thing with other phones. So does he monitor all phones? seems a lot of work for the slug.

Also BS on Jill not knowing what Reddit is. person claimed jill was upset over comments on fb or Insta as far as negative social media. She has limited comments for quite a while on those, but within the last few weeks went on a tangent about being persecuted and negative social media. Even Tim posted about reading about the family online when he was away at school.

the whole thing seemed to be some kind of stunt to make Jill come off looking good/better in the minds of snarkers on the ebil intrernet.

She lost me when she stated as a medical professional she is a mandatory reporter but she did not see any signs of abuse in the Rod home even though she observed David forcing all the kids to stay up until midnight hearing him preach and Jill withholding food as punishment.  Abuse is more than just corporal punishment, and she would know this if she really is a mandatory reporter.  She also said she would hesitate to report because foster homes are more abusive than Jill and David.

The longer the AMA went on, the more it felt like the Jill Rod redemption tour, but I don't think Jill wrote it. I don't think anyone in her house wrote it. Jill and her kids are only semi-literate. The posts are in normal English. Is the poster really a Ph.D candidate? I don't know, but the writer clearly is not from the Joyful Noyce Academy.

The writer's language to describe Jill changes the longer she posts. At first, it is loving mother Jill. It becomes less complimentary as people bring up some of Jill's greatest hits like the funeral for Amy's legs.

I do believe the kids write the tributes to Best Momma Ever, and Jill edits and publishes them. Having to write glowing words about Jill is truly punishment.

I agree, she is too articulate and her grammar is too good for her to be Jill or anyone homeschooled by Jill.  It does seem like she is most interested in defending Jill and painting her in the best possible light which makes me wonder why.

There are a lot of typos in the user's responses.  I did not notice any random capitalizations or any misuse of quotation marks or any other Jill Rod tells.  The poster was inconsistent in her replies, so I suspect this is someone making shit up.

reddit seems to have figured out who it is by info the person gave, but did not dox the person.

another doubt i  had in the story was of David being the one keeping the kids up late. It wasn't long ago Jill posted the kids stuffing and stamping envelopes for her "Ladies Retreat" at 11:30pm while david was wrapped in a blanked in the recliner watching a video on how to be a good father by standing up for and supporting your children.

also Jill has posted about going on rants to the children, many times at night.

one i recall is here https://rodriguesfamilyministries.com/main/?p=2709

in it Jill finds bad things on the ebil internet while "catching up on computer work"

"So, the more I sat at my computer, the more “fired up” I got!!  “Children!!” I called them all up to me.  Once they had all gathered around me, I said………"

"My children looked at me with wide eyes and I could see the passion for doing right……..creep onto their own precious faces & eyes.  When I finish with talks like that, they always begin to start talking rapidly and we have a blessed family discussion on sin and the DARK, DEATHLY places it will take you!!  Praise God for the light of God’s Word!!  “Ps 119:105 ¶  Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

So, Jill sees things on the internet that she finds "sinful" and she yells at innocent children about it. No wonder they all are so quick to perform for the camera whenever Jill points it at them. If they have to endure a screaming tirade over the sins of people they don't know,  what happens when they themselves do something BME disapproves of? It must be a difficult and exhausting existence.

My problems were that it was very pro Jill and anti David(almost laughably so), claimed there was plenty of food to eat(we have seen the shopping carts and the kids look malnourished), they don't believe in corporal punishment(Jill is very vocally pro Pearls).

Things I buy: Jill making the kids write those odes to how great of a mom she is and Anna being a stuck up bitch.

I agree we should take any AMA's with a grain of salt, no matter if the site claims they're verified, but I will say a bit in the babysitter's defense. Jill is a textbook narcissist, and narcs are expert manipulators. I can absolutely believe she's nice and charming to the outside world, as well as to anyone she's trying to get something out of. The babysitter's perspective is also heavily skewed just by virtue of growing up Fundie. However, I still remember that video where Tessie was surprised by Jill's camera. She flinched and then immediately got into character and did the breathy "Haaiiiiiiiiii."  It was like watching a hostage who's learned to play her captor's game in order to survive  Those kids are absolutely physically abused when no one's looking.

I don't think the babysitter was Jill because Jill can't even fake write her kids' praise letters w/o using her own style of writing. I would believe it is one of the older teens at church who likes the kids, has a mom worst than Jill, and thinks David is boring and gross.
