Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

Sierra's husband is probably one of those asshole Fundie men who treats his wife like he did her some huge favor by marrying her and saving her from a life of sin amongst the heathens. A near 30 year-old marrying a teenager screams "control freak" to me.

Yup. Which is why I wanted to point out that imbalance as well as the obvious gender one. She was also a newly-minted fundie on top of it all, so she was an easy mark for Mark. I still wonder who helps her with the kids when she's dipping strawberries and just trying to cook a meal? Have the Duggars lent out Joy to her? We've also seen Marjorie at her place, but I just don't see Marge as a chore drudge like Joy. She actually has something resembling a real life. I bet Sierra wishes she was THAT kind of 18 year old, rather than the sinning hussy she was before Mark got his hooks into her.

When Sierra's husband pushed her into finding a ministry, I don't wonder I he really meant a way for Sierra to bring in an income. After all, a Fundie man may well declare "No wife of mine is going to work!". But if it's a "ministry", well then, that is very different than a real job!  A ministry can bring in love offerings!  Not a heathen, actual job, but bringing in some extra, much needed cash, nevertheless.

It is. I don't want to go into much detail because it's the wrong thread, but yeah, early in her marriage, her husband demanded she find "a ministry," and that's what she came up with.

I am actually quite interested in her backstory...where can we take the conversation? Maybe Fellowship thread?

Hmm, seems I've heard this idea quite frequently, something about a possible control freak looking for a meek wife~

LOL, I thought we were in the Media thread. That's what I get for being on my phone. This is the right thread.

And unlike Sierra, the other one hasn't been able to experience life on her own terms, even for a nanosecond. She once had a glimmer of spunk, but that's been washed away. This particular girl has great Doormat potential in her future marriage. I think Sierra's life of sin (a semester at community college, tats, and some drinking) actually demonstrates an ability that might have kept her from being totally run over by the bulldozer named Mark Dominguez. It really looks like Mark went into this marriage with a Captain Save a Ho attitude, but Sierra continues to show some backbone and (misguided) initiative. Yes, Sierra swallowed the Kook-Aid by the gallon, but she doesn't seem to have allowed herself to be totally trampled. For a fundie, Sierra's got some balls.

I'm afraid that the Other Girl will be dominated but determined to keep up a happy, shiny facade. This girl tends to not eat when she is stressed. I will be interested to see how thin this girl becomes, thinking that's how you please your man.

So how do we know about Sierra's earlier life? She wasn't raised by these like-minded lunatics?

She doesn't say much, but we've seen a few pictures that she's posted on Instagram. They appear to be maybe mainstream Christian, and she seems to have been raised fairly normally. Heck, I think my parents (in my later high school years) were more fundie than Sierra's family. But with me, the genie was already out of the bottle, and I wasn't going to conform to their new religion. Actually, for me, I did the OPPOSITE of Sierra and ran away from religion altogether, aside from a detour into Buddhism for a year or two.

I felt Sierra's "how we met' story to be very typical, and it seemed liked she shared it as documentation. I think that Sierra is grooming herself to be the next TLC family and she is strategically making her electronic footprint.

I wouldn't be surprised though, if Sierra were to get her own show, that she would have a few subtle FU Duggar moments. Kind of showing how Fundy can be done without always going to extremes.

Kelly is 2/2 this week in the birthday tribute department. We learn a little more about Josie in this post, and NOT A SINGLE REFERENCE TO JESUS. Heck, not even a "sweet blessing" or "servant's heart" thrown in after the talk about what a help she is! Duggars, take note. THIS is how a public announcement is done!

Unfortunately for Duggardom, in order to write something like this you'd need to have at least a smidgen of respect for a human being other than yourself.

I know, I know. But it could have been a LOT worse in Duggar hands.

The Bateses' kids were more mixed up gender-wise, so it seems like being a "helper" is determined more by age than sex. Tori is the only female  kidult in the house who is older than Josie, and she's in college. It does seem like Trace takes care of the little boys, so it's not ALL about poor Josie and Katie, although I'm sure they bear the brunt of it these days. I'm pretty sure Tori is helping with schooling, since she's working on what amounts to an "education" degree at Clown College. Kelly also seems to actively teach, unlike another mother of 19 who (maybe) pays someone to do that for her.

Hey Ben! Take some notes. Marjorie can speak to the camera without averting her eyes to look at crib notes!

I like how Josie Bates is wearing a scoop neck blouse with no modesty layer underneath. They seemed to have lightened up on their modest dress.  Good for them. I noticed at least one of the older girls had on a sleeveless dress at their I Love You Day Dinner.  I think it was Tori. No way would a Duggar girl be allowed to dress the way they did- they would have had a t-shirt underneath & a cardigan over top.

I have to amend my post above because I forgot about Carlin. So Josie has TWO sisters above her, but they are really showcasing her as drill sergeant with the parents away on the episode airing now.

Plus her makeup looks tasteful. No raccoon eyes!

Wow, yes, she really needs to tone it down a few notches!

Marjorie has a 1980's MTV vj vibe going on. Was annoying then, is annoying now.

Awww, c'mon, she's Bubbly Christian Teen!

Seriously, even though she's enmeshed in the Duggar mess, she could have taken the Duggars into a more mainstream place. After the "fire," this might have been a more advisable path, rather than circling the wagons and doubling down on Gothard.

I wish the Si/Marge courtship had lasted only because Michelle and Jessa would've loathed her and that would've made me tingly all over. Even though her personality grates, she is VERY camera-ready and doesn't struggle to keep a dialogue going the way the Duggar girls do. Her and Si would've made for more entertaining TV than Anna and the J'Slaves sitting around a dinner table with the sound of crickets in the background.

Ok, now I'm certain she wanted Josiah for the fame and attention. Possibly just wanted to milk a courtship for tv minutes, then dump him at the last possible moment.

Isn't it weird that the Gothard boys that the Bates girls married come out better than the outsiders the Duggar girls married/are marrying? I never thought I'd see myself writing those words. The only Gothard failure is Anna vs. outsider Whitney.

I learned the hard way not to conment, except for Famy (only in very special circumstances). I thought the same thing when I saw that picture.

Fundies don't seem to have a Danger boundary. e.g. pretty much everything we see the Duggars or Bates kids do. Get your head stuck in a banister? Laugh your ads off. Fall into an orchestra pit while playing where you shouldn't? Film it! The Bateses film stupid stunts the boys do that are quite dangerous. Now, this beaded bracelet so the world knows that her latest speshul snowflake is female. Ugh.

Not sure about Fundies not having a danger boundary as they clutch their pearls in horror at the mere thought of anything secular...by then they let their kids fall through an orchestra pit...it boggles the mind...

The Bates girl actually looks very pretty...clear skin, tasteful makeup, and no frumper wear.  Obviously she wasn't watching the Duggar sisters' instructional videos on hair and makeup and clothing.

Even though Marjorie's hyper drive cheerleader-y vibe and energy makes me stabby, I try not to snark on fer because unlike the Duggar kids, she actually shows self confidence and spirit...both of which have been systematically destroyed in The Duggarverse.

Physical harm is no threat cuz Jesus will lift you up. (even, or maybe especially?, if you court physical danger by, say, not getting proper prenatal care?) Spiritual danger, on the other hand, requires serious warnings. Cuz if you don't listen carefully to MEchelle and Jizm Bob, you just might wind up colluding with the devil!

How close in age are Carson & Brooklyn?

In an episode of BUBs Erin mentioned a plan to be induced and also said something like, This one and done, referring to not having 19 kids. We'll see if this next generation makes up their own minds on pregnancy & birth control.

Brooklyn and Carson are a little under 15 months apart.  Does that qualify as Irish twins?

I always thought Irish twins were born in the same year?

I am gllad she had a safe delivery. I hope they stop at two.

So I'd never heard the term Irish twins until this last year or so.  This finally pushed me to look it up to know for sure what it was.

Either of a pair of siblings born less than 12 months apart, especially if born within the same calendar year or school year or born one year apart.

Due to back pain, I was in bed all day yesterday so being a glutton for punishment, I binge watched the Bringing Up Bates episodes. My biggest take away is that Alyssa can barely hold in her disdain for her family.  Every time she showed up on screen she reminded me of Karen Smith from Mean Girls.

Interestingly, she showed up at the Bates compound this weekend, and now we know it was because of Brooklyn's planned birth (it's now pretty evident that Erin was induced on Friday). I saw a pic today posted to Whitney's IG of all three girl cousins together. She may not like having her whole family crash her house (a lot like Mama Janie), but she's certainly around for the paychecks.
