Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

Message added by Scarlett45

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

While we understand the frustration (change is never easy), please keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way and that for those members who don't, the ongoing conversation about other forums and chat options can equally be a cause of frustration.

Out of respect for your fellow posters, we kindly ask that you continue any discussion about alternatives via PM or the Technically Speaking: Bugs, Questions, & Suggestions area.

Emma, just in case you haven't left yet, please be aware that there's currently massive flooding in Lower Bavaria and we've had lots of rain. You most likely will not be affected since you'll be in Upper Bavaria, but in case.......maybe check out road info before you go, if you're driving yourself

Thanks, MunichNark! We don't leave until the end of the month, so hopefully it dries out by then. We've got connections everywhere through our cruise line, so we aren't driving ourselves anywhere (which is a good thing because I have no sense of direction). Here in TX, we're having massive flooding, too. It's not been a good few weeks.

zoomama, where in Texas are you headed? I'm in Dallas and we've had sporadic flooding across parts of the city, but it's really bad south of us down to Houston.

It is bad in parts of Houston, so far we have had no rain today. Check ahead for open roads some are closed. It depends on when you will be driving, water goes down fast.

I'm in Houston. It isn't bad in the city itself, but areas all around are bad. My husband works in the city and my daughter goes to school and therapy there and we have had no problems getting around. My friend in Brenham got flooded, people in The Woodlands and Cypress areas (north) and in Ft. Bend County, especially Rosenberg (south) where the Brazos is overflowing. My husband discovered a thrift store I had never been to (I am a junker thrift store, garage sale enthusiast) in Rosenberg and I finally ventured down Wednesday to check it out and the sheriff had several cars and a blockade set up so no one could go down the road. So I had to turn back around and go home. The news clips of all the cattle swimming trying to find dry land is very sad.

They had to kill off the cows the last couple years in Texas because it had been so dry, they didn't have enough hay to feed them. And now they are all drowning because it is so, so wet. This weather is crazy. I am sick and tired of the rain. Especially since my daughter is home for her summer break. She and a friend went swimming for about 20 minutes before they couldn't take it anymore because it is so cold. Then we went to a playground and I had to douse them with mosquito repellent and then wipe everything down with their swim towels. Staying inside with her crazy ADHD is not happening. If she isn't moving constantly, we are both miserable.

I'm home.  Been home since Saturday night, but working.  Bleh.  Plus there was a mountain of clothes to wash and the camper is (very noticeably) parked just off the steps of the back porch so I can clean it.  And I WILL clean it.  Friday has some potential.

I met Mickey.  In all the trips I've had down there, I'd never seen Mickey, so I guess I'm complete.  I wanted to post a pic, but the thingy pops up that says I can only post X amt of kb or something.  I don't speak kb, so I'm stuck.  Just imagine in your head a grey haired middle aged grandma grinning like a fool, hugging (probably a GIRL) in a Mickey costume like he's my dearest friend and you'll have the general scene.  There were 5 in our group that time, and I was obviously more excited than any of the kids.

We went to Morrison Springs in Defuniac before Disney.  I used to go there some when I was a kid.  It's changed and there's a public platform and a diving dock now.  The springs have changed, the population and demographic around there hasn't.  Some highly interesting people around there.  Some very interesting women who should probably reconsider their oaths to wear bikinis no matter the load limit.  Just saying.

Disneyland is the original, it's in California. In Florida there is Walt Disney World, it contains a higher capacity "copy" called the Magic Kingdom.

Disneyland Paris is a pale imitation not worth anyone's money.

I've never been to Disney Land or Disney World and if I was in Paris, an amusement park would be the last place I'd be!  I don't like "rides".  My mother loved "The Whip", "The Caterpillar".  She couldn't wait to get me on those rides.  When I was about 8 or 9 months old she took me to Paragon Park, which for those who grew up in Boston and surrounding was sort of like a poor man's Disney.  She put me on the merry go round or as she called it the "flying horses".  I screamed, I screamed, and I screamed....  As I got older I continued to scream.  Once I reached the age where she could try to reason with me, I would only agree to go on the merry go round if I could sit in one of those carriages.  The horses were hard, they hurt my but, and I was afraid I was going to get tossed off!  Once I hit school age the true torture began.  I was now old enough to go on "the Whip" and "the Caterpillar".  Except I didn't want to.  I had finally adjusted to the flying horses and actually getting on a horse that moved and I thought I was good.  No.  Guilt trip.  "I've waited my entire life to have a daughter who would ride on rides with me at the amusement park" my mother proclaimed.  Every year the trip to Paragon Park would excite and terrify me.  I determined that I didn't like to go up in the air, get jostled about, and thank the lord upside down had not yet been invented!  Anything that spun, I was good with.  I needed to watch the ride completely through before I would get in line.  I guess I honestly worked their nerves, but this was supposed to be fun!

While all this was going on, my father stood off to the side, holding coolers and purses and except for one time when he took me into a haunted house, (that ended badly too, add don't spook me to the "do not do" list!), he never went on the rides.  I asked my mother why not.  "He's a man, they don't participate in such frivolous things, it's his job to watch our stuff".

Found out as an adult.  My father HATED amusement parks, was terrified of heights, and threw up if he sat on anything that turned more than once.  Wouldn't defend me, because he didn't want to admit he was just plain chickenshit!  Jeesh!

So, a trip to Disney was not something my parents would spend money on....  But we did have a swimming pool!

The specialist I see for my thyroid told me a scary thing. He said he has lost two middle-aged female patients due to self-medicating and going to a chiropractor or a naturopathic doctor who changed their thyroid med dosage. I know the thyroid med I am on can be taken by people for weight loss. Makes me more angry because I was on too high of dosage for two years (give and take three to three and half months) because the idiot out of town doctor was misreading my thyroid blood test results. GRRRR!!! I did not do this to myself, and I was sick and miserable for two years. So glad I got a second opinion with a doctor who knows what he is doing. I wonder how much more I would have became ill if I would have stayed with the other doctor.

I'm usually pretty laissez faire about my thyroid disease and the medications I have to take, but one time a lady I know was half joking about wanting to get on thyroid meds so she could lose some weight easily and I LAID INTO her. It just set me off since she knew what I had been dealing with and I think I surprised both of us with how angry I got.

Big Sky, your health issues make me squirm!  I am so happy you've found a doc you feel you can trust.  I hope he/she gets you on the road to health so you can seriously enjoy life.

so far, every time I've been to the Diz, I've been with my sons family.  We call his wife the Disney Natzi.  Oh my Lord, she plans every minute, takes off at 90 MPH, and SHE'S the only one with the agenda.  I make snide comments every time about how I don't know my way around any of the parks, I'm just following D's butt.  That's my whole job.  Follow the butt.  And I know-for-a-fact there are many, many things I've never seen (or even been close to) because SHE doesn't care for them.  (Like the shows).  One of my VERY favorite things is the Laugh Floor (or something like that) based on Monsters, Inc and Mike Wizowski.  There are cartoon characters on a screen mixed with live shots of people in the audience, and the cartoons interact with the audience in real time.  This just cracks me up!!!  I have no idea how they do it, but it's pure genius.  (Underrated too, nobody loves that  show like I do).  Many things at the parks are dated now, and need to be revamped, especially MK.  Space Mountain (still enormously popular) needs to be updated something fierce.  I'm a total Disney nerd.  I have 3 kinds of t-shirts - Disney, USMC, and Savannah.  No joke, I work from home, tee's are staples, and I only own the 3 kinds.  No DUGGAR Video Studios, Quivers, and no Jesus (although I'm not ashamed).  I guess it's easy to see where my heart lays.

Munich, what do you do for Disney?

I've never been to Disneyland - I really should be ashamed of myself. I've two free entry tickets though, so really no excuse. Is that Disneyworld you went to?

I LOVE Disneyland and Disneyworld. You should go, MUNICHNARK! I am not a big roller coaster fan, but as FRENCHTOAST said, there is so much else to do. I love the shows.  (I just got to see the new Frozen musical at Disneyland with my daughter and granddaughter. A Broadway show for the price of theme park admission!) I could go to World of Color, Fantasmic, Tiki-Room, Small World, Toy Story ride, jungle cruise, Buzz Lightyear, Turtle talk, every day...all non-coaster attractions! And you cannot beat the people watching.

HAPPYFATCHICK, you need a non-SIL Disney visit so you can leisurely enjoy everything YOU want to do.

Just a suggestion....I am very motion sensitive, so when I go to a theme park, I take over the counter seasick medication just like I'm going on a boat. I prefer Meclizine cause it's non-drowsy.

So glad you are doing better, BIGSKYGIRL.

I try very hard to not be like your SIL @Happyfatchick. It's hard, because it's in my nature to plan/coordinate everything. It also helps with my son (though he's older now and can handle the swerves better). Last year when we went to Disney, it was only my second time. The first time with kids, but they were 9 and 12 at the time. The bonus is we went with a family (that we'll be seeing this weekend, in fact) that are Disney Vacation Club members, so they arranged lodging on property. A great big multi-room with a kitchenette and laundry. But they know the parks, and we relied on them heavily. But we also discussed and agreed that we make some general plans (what parks to visit what day, what rides we'd like to hit) but that we'd also just take it easy and let it be a vacation. It was a really, really fun time. But I knew I had to reign myself in and not be a micro-manager.

Also, as a side note, we went to Disney about 3 or so days after Joshgate I. It did cast a bit of pall, knowing that and watching the three kids have a good time hanging out.

I went to Disney Land with my family when I was a kid. We had fun, but I think I was more excited about the plane ride back and forth than I was anything else. *lol*

The girl who cuts my hair wants to be hyperthyroid so she could lose weight. I kept my mouth shut when she said it. Being hyper or hypothyroid is not a walk in the park. I still cannot believe someone would use thyroid hormone replacement medication to lose weight or try to self-medicate him or herself. I do not enjoy being on the one med myself or the fun of trying to get the right med dosage, but I would not tempt to play doctor when it comes to the dosage.

People can have the stupidest ideas when it comes to weight loss. I once heard a nurse at my work, who should know better because she's in the medical profession, say that she really wanted gastro, just for about a week or so, because she thought she needed to lose 5-10 kgs.

I remember once overhearing a conversation between two women...The topic was pregnancy, and one of them was telling the other about someone sh knew who was going through the pregnancy from hell with constant sickness, unable to keep any food down, high fevers, constantly having to be hospitalized for one thing or another and fighting to maintain her pregnancy with what was an almost completely ravaged body...She was, from what I heard, finally in her third trimester and had lost 25 lb from her pre-pregnancy weight. The other woman's sole comment? "Oh, she's so lucky!"

Back in March, I had an abnormal thyroid reading because I took my thyroid in the morning with the rest of my vitamins, including calcium. I actually did the research myself about thyroid/calcium, and only knew about this connection a week before my abnormal test result. I started taking the meds at night and got down to a barely acceptable 3.98. I'd like to up my dosage with a small bit of T3 for more of a jumpstart, but my endo has retired, and my records are now with my PCP. He said that since I am now essentially "normal," I really have no need to find another endo. Ugh, I really don't want to have to fight with my PCP about this; she's also new since my former doctor retired her practice for reasons unknown.

Interestingly, it's my psych who orders most of my bloodwork to check for any liver abnormalities due to the meds I take for anxiety and bipolar (very slight, thank goodness). It's an uphill battle, since just about every med I take has weight gain as a side effect. I did get my weight down to about 115 last summer, but after injury after injury (now my shoulder/rotator cuff), it's been nearly impossible to work out like I did to get the weight (about 170 at my highest) off. Now, of course, I've gained about 20 lbs. back and am very discouraged. I think the thyroid dosage/numbers do tie in with my weight, which is why I was fine on the low dose prescribed to me now, because I weighed 20 lbs. less. If I keep gaining, it's back to the doctor, like it or not. I am afraid to self-medicate; I do not need the heart palpitations, etc. that come with hyperthyroid.

I was told not to take vitamins etc. etc. within four hours of taking my thyroid med because it makes the med less effective. Right now I will be happy if the chest pressure went away. We thought the doctor found the right dosage last year, but I became hyperthyroid in April. I cannot believe acid reflux can cause so many problems. Next time a doctor says to me have this treatment because you will feel better, your quality of life will improve, and it is easier to treat the medical condition you will probably have after the treatment, I will grab my purse and run for the hills or have my head examine for going to the doctor in the first place along with getting a second opinion.

They thyroid issues are rampant I'm afraid. I finally found a doctor in old location who "fixed" me by giving me t-3. Then he went concierge and  I found a doctor who understood my treatment and always asked me how I felt along with blood test results. We moved to another state near a big city with supposedly good medical care and the new internist poo-poo'd the need for t-3. Told me it was only like caffeine. What???? And she is associated with a major university medical school. The endo told me I was over medicated and it was dangerous. I told her I was on that treatment for over 15 years and felt fine. Not one symptom of hyper. Can't be she said. I consented to try Armour natural because it is easier to come by than my compounded stuff. I feel okay. For me the weight has never come off easily while on meds.   The reflux bothers me periodically. I tried diluted Brqggs apple cider vinegar and it helps a lot. It does cause chest pain in me. Heart checks out fine even with large pericardial effusion which confused new cardiologist. Doesn't understand how I can be so functional with all that fluid around my heart. Stress echo was fine. Cardiologist monitoring that said the test was negative for findings even with the effusion. Isn't it the most frustrating to navigate the medical world just to feel good. I say NO to a lot of things they offer. I think the drug companies are responsible for much of what goes on. Ugh. What a mess.

If health issues require the use of a mobility scooter, there's no need to feel self conscious, because tons and tons of people use them at Disney World.

My husband swears he's getting one of those every time we go, and he HAS no mobility issues!  I swear, Disney is the only time he ever wears that FitBit thingy, just so he can announce every night how many miles he walked that day.  Shoot, you want some MILEAGE, go to our nations Capitol.  Walk walk walk walk.  Walk all the way to the Lincoln monument and stare up those steps (where there are ALWAYS a million oblivious teenagers running up and down like its nothing).  I know good and well all those old farts like John Adams didn't plan out that city.  If Benjamin Franklin with his potbelly had been mapping out the Capitol, it would all fit inside the White House grounds.  And if you're REALLY into torture, do a day trip!  Hahahaha!!!

Lookey, I'm so sorry you're having such a frustrating time with your doctors and meds.  I want you to be HAPPY here!  (And haven't we had some gorgeous weather the last couple days?)  I asked you this before - are you trapped in your doctor group?  I trotted up and down the roads with my parents for so many years to Piedmont doctors and hospitals.  I like them SO much better than where you are.  Except for that one unfortunate incident with the 2:00am bath, I thought they offered excellent care to my parents.  Their cardiologist is outstanding, and the whole group seems to be.  My brother uses them as well.  If I had cardio issues, I would go there in a heartbeat.  (And everybody said ACK!!!)

I got bad news about my eyes and have another visit before I go to Sacramento to move out of my mobile that I haven't been to in 7 years.  So I was thinking there is the UC Davis eye institute there that I used to go to, and maybe I'll try them for another opinion and latest research while I'm there if I can.  I'll be in a motel for several days at least until I can get the mobile cleaned enough (b a crew) to stay there.  Have to be out by end of June but it's worth a try even if I have to fly up monthly for a while.  I've done it before.

Being ill sucks.  I'm not exactly ill.  Just fairly blind and my whole back is in pain and my nerves are shot from not being able see and hurting  all the time.  Such is life until you die, I guess.

My posts are a mess sometimes because I am typing by touch and don't see well enough to edit afterwards.  Sorry.

For reflux, have you tried soda (baking powder)? It's extremely good for acidity.

I've some thyroid trouble, on and off, but nothing like you poor things here. Mine seem mostly related to stress - my GP advised to try iodine tablets. Germany is classified as low iodine, you can buy salt enriched with it. I've been doing some research and am a bit confused as to whether it's actually goood or not. Selenium seems to be good as well as I'm not a fan of taking iodine or medication.

Rather too much info out there. I need to get my levels checked again soon.

Ah, and I'm in the licensing bit of Disney. We do the funky crap that you spend your money on, like Tshirts, bedding, etc

When my anxiety symptoms appeared over 20 years ago, they tested me for everything medical to rule it out before diagnosing me with an anxiety disorder. I was one of those naive 20 somethings that was kind of, sort of, wishing for a physical ailment, because I was thinking it would be an easier fix.

Illness, whether psychological or physical suck. My hubby always says, well it's better than the alternative, and while that is true, there are certainly moments in time where it doesn't feel so.

My anxiety effects my ability to take medications, I'm a bit med-phobic now. I have 2 prescriptions in my cabinet, untouched, because I haven't been able to overcome my anxiety enough to take them. And one of them is to treat anxiety.

HFC, Yes it has been so gorgeous!  We are enjoying it so much. We walk, sit by the subdivision pool, and keep saying "isn't it nice out"  I love my area of the state.  Obviously has its own set of issues, but where doesn't? Sometimes feels that we are in the country, except we aren't.  We can get to the big city really fast if we want to.  And to answer your question, No, I'm not trapped in the doctor group. Medicare and the work insurance I use as a supplement don't have any restrictions on where to go. The endo is Piedmont. She is adorable, but a battle to get what I need.  Haven't tried any WellStar yet but open to it all.  I did love the oncologist at the Winship Cancer Center.  I am hoping I will only see him every six months for routine checks.  I loved the cardiologist at the Emory Clinic who only comes there once a week, rest of time at Midtown, but Mr. lookeyloo did not find her helpful at all.  Would you PM me the name of the great cardiologist from Piedmont, for Mr. lookeyloo?

I want to be sure you know we LOVE it here.  Couldn't be happier with the decision to move.

Do all of you have a television?  I have been TV free for over three years.  I used to watch TV via Hulu and iTunes on my computer.  Then my computer died and I switched to an iPad.  I have Netflix and Hulu, but most network TV makes episodes available now via web apps.  I wonder others are doing similar things and if television manufactures are feeling the pinch.  Just curious....

Hell, sometimes just living isn't for sissies. LOL.

For those of us with thyroid issues, remember to take your thyroid meds at least 4 hours away from anything with calcium or iron in it. Those can both cause absorption issues. I'm on a combo of Westhroid and Cytomel (which is T3); it's not normal, but I'm a terrible converter of T4 to T3 so my body needs the extra T3 help. Until I got my Free T3 levels right, I couldn't lose weight to save my life. I don't even bother with an endo anymore, they are so backwards when it comes to thyroid issues and how to treat them so a person actually feels good, it's sad. I see an integrative doc who has Hashi's herself, so she totally gets it.

My husband and I have canceled our television cable service and newspaper for now. I think my husband misses all the channels we had more than I do. *lol* I miss a few of the channels, but the cost and value was not great. My husband has his ipad, and I have the internet. We both use iTunes and YouTube to watch movies and television shows. We do get some local channels, but they are not great either. Television is not what it use to be.

We ditched the home phone and newspaper when we moved and are getting Netflix thanks to local son but the Mr likes the premium channels and watches them when I am not around. We have another 18 months on this low cost intro contract so will regroup then. I have an antenna and Eye Tv on my iMac. Reception iffy no matter where I move the antenna and I find that frustrating.

I still have a TV, because I prefer the bigger screen, but I get most of my shows from the internet. I either attach my computer with an HDMI cable, or if I'm working on my computer while also watching TV, I chuck whatever I want to watch on a flash drive, which goes into my DVD player USB port.

We have cable; 500 channels of nothing to watch. But it's my husbands default for unwinding. My kids have Netflix and Hulu, as do a few of our friends, but we're old dogs and haven't made the jump to learn these new tricks yet. I'm not even sure how my minimal TV habits would translate with subscription TV. I watch Discovery, HGTV, the ID channel, the occasional brain dead Lifetime Movie and a couple of reality shows. I rarely watch ABC, CBS or NBC either. And I get my news from the internet. But hubby watches EVERYTHING, network series, cable series, new movies, old movies, foreign movies, animated movies, baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf ... He tries to record everything, because, you know, commercials. He thinks Fast Forward was invented for him. He can barely work his smart phone, but he is a master at all things DVR. I swear he can watch about 5 things at once, without missing a scene or a word.

I assume that you do not pay for a television licence, right? We have to pay just under 18 Euro a month for public TV. The law was recently changed that all households, regardless of whether they have or watch TV must pay. Bastards..........

We finally got rid of cable a few months ago and got an antenna - one of those old-school things up on the roof. It actually brings in about 30 different channels with excellent picture quality. I really don't watch TV at all, though, and my husband will sometimes watch movies or reruns of NCIS and the like. We do have netflix and hulu, which bring us pretty much anything we'd care to watch, but we still rarely do. Actually, my son recently got me hooked on Supernatural, so I ended up watching ten seasons of that between November and March, then ended up having to buy the 11th season off Amazon since Netflix doesn't run the current seasons and Hulu only shows the last 5 episodes, so I couldn't find the beginning of the season anywhere and didn't want to wait. I caught the final 5 episodes pretty much in real time, so am now in Supernatural withdrawals until the 12th season begins. The CW is one of the channels the antenna doesn't bring in. I've just been watching it on my laptop in any case.

Ah, but just like the shoemaker's children are never shod, of course a Therapist would suffer from anxiety.

It's not much fun, is it? Sigh

I do own a telly - I've cable but without cable if that makes sense. We have public TV Channels here (3 main ones plus several offshoots) and then all the private ones. All of which are total shite. I've about 33 Channels saved, there would be more if I were to go along with Sky or something.

I assume that you do not pay for a television licence, right? We have to pay just under 18 Euro a month for public TV. The law was recently changed that all households, regardless of whether they have or watch TV must pay. Bastards..........

Edit, came across this again yesterday, it's just so bloody cute......

Germany uses cable for normal tv, right? So no antennas?

Rundfunk is a cool sounding word.

Yes and no - since we were more or less switched over to digital, I think antennas may be a thing of the past. I've a wee receiver that plugs into both the telly and the satellite on top of our roof. You need one to watch TV here.

You can just be like me and have that, or you can pay up with any of the cable companies and get much more, but it'll cost you. Or, if your Landlord is ok or you own your place, get a satellite.

Rundfunk:-) it's kind of nice and oldfashioned sounding. The current license is now called "Beitragsservice", making it sound as if they are doing us a favour. They're not......and the money is only for the public stations. Meh.

Is anyone going to follow the football btw? Starts today.........I hope it'll pass off without incident

hi everyone. 3338 miles later, i am home from my road trip to deliver #1 grandson to texas for his summer vacation. it was fun and all but i realized that i REALLY felt the length of the drive this time. took it out of me, it did. but i am safely home, and celebrated my #9 grandchild's 5th birthday yesterday. she is with me today playing with her new dollhouse etc.   to say i have a lot to catch up on is an understatement.

I am cranky. I'm soooo tired of people blaming tragedies on mental illness. No one speculates on a person's mental health when they win a gold medal or run a Fortune 500, and the odds are just as great that they have mental health issues. And then people wonder why folks don't seek treatment or disclose they have problems. The stigma has got to stop.

My heart goes out to the families of lost and injured loved ones in FL.

Welcome back, ZOOMAMA. That is quite a few miles under your belts! I find that ANY travel wipes me out way more than it used to. Enjoy being home!

German has lots of cool sounding words! Some of the words are long and are actually a description.

i really wish Mike Myers had finished the Sprockets film. That was some funny shit!

True but it is also a somewhat inflexible lingo, which is why we borrow words, lots from English these days. There is a language called "Denglish" actually, which is made up from english sounding words that usually don't exist, but is used a lot in ads and stuff. For some weird reason that I have yet to fathom, German invents these words, rather than using the proper english ones. Drives me insane. (As an example, a mobile phone is a "Handy" here. Why??? Bullying becomes mobbing, Health and Beauty is wellness. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh)

I'm just trying to figure out how far 3000 plus miles would get me - hell, Germany 's not that big
