Season Finale. When Elsbeth tries to solve a murder, she comes face-to-face with many familiar suspects.

Airdate May 8, 2025 on CBS

I need Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane to have staged a musical production with the inmates!!

eta-bonus points if Mel Brooks writes the number!😆

I don't know if you watched the brief preview, but...

Spoiler

it looks like Cell Block Tango happens.  I love it!!

But the biggest crime committed in this episode was they had Donna Lynn Champlin as the warden + a big musical number and they didn't let her sing?  What the heck?

I thought that they were bringing Ethan Slater back for the same reason.

Not to interfere with the fantasy, but I question if a prison guard can "arrest" the warden on the say-so of a prisoner.  Far more likely that the warden would have the nosy prisoner hauled away by the prison guards and thrown in solitary.

I noticed that the "consultant" that Judge Doussaint took away with him was Chloe, the one who had helped the developer to die (I guess she's out on bail?).  I'm not sure why the Judge thought his wife would be ok with him going away with his "secretary", though, as he originally claimed.

Also, the book that contained the notes between prisoners was by N.D. Longacre, whose supposed faked death cover-up formed the basis for the funeral director's murder of his nephew.

Margo also supposedly watched a Lavish Ladies marathon.

A capital crime indeed. Though I have endless admiration for Mary Louise Parker and Gina Gershon, the source of that admiration isn't exactly their singing. Ms. Champlin on the other hand, now there's a voice that demands to be heard.

This also reminded me of an episode of The Marvelous Ms. Maisel - another notably non-musical show - that nevertheless had an episode with in-plot musical numbers set at a Catskills resort. For that episode, the producers went out of their way to hire Jakob Kemp (of Newsies and others) for a relatively minor part as a waiter I think. They could have unbelievably easily had him sing something. But they didn't.

Same here. Sadly, Ms. Champlin didn't appear in the Cell Block Tango number from Crazy Ex-Girlfiend either. The universe cries.

I’m really going to miss Kaya being Elsbeth’s main partner. Their dynamic was so fun and natural, with Elsbeth bringing Kaya out of her shell and Kaya helping Elsbeth mellow out a bit. I wouldn’t have minded them being partners for a couple more seasons. I know Carra Patterson is still going to guest star, but it won’t be the same. The partners they’ve paired Elsbeth with in her absence have been fine, but none have had the same chemistry. I’m hoping S3 introduces someone new and interesting who can keep up with Elsbeth.

And the finale was fine, but it almost felt like one guest star too many. I loved the cell block tango though, Margo’s part especially.

My thoughts exactly re Donna Lynn Champlin. What a waste of her talents.

Donna Lynne Champlin also appeared on L/O SVU recently as a crime victim--no singing there either.  But she had come to town to see Broadway shows.

I loved her on "Crazy ex-Girlfriend".

I guess it was just me and my husband then. We weren't feeling this episode. From the Kaya goodbye that nobody wants to the unrealism of so many of Elsbeth's former criminals on one floor in one prison, it was a bit hard to swallow even tongue in cheek, and I'm OK with weird stuff on other shows, like "Only Murders".

100% unrealistic, but fun as heck! Who knew the local detention center for rich people was basically jail summer camp?

Of course Chloe didn't go to the pokey. She was too beautiful and sophisticated and waay too connected.  If she is going on junkets with judges she is not even seeing the inside of a courtroom, much less a jail.

So many callbacks and Easter Eggs. Half the fun of the episode was finding them all.

But my real question is... is Ramen as currency a real thing in jail?  Because that was also the hot item/currency in Brooklyn 99 when Jake went to jail.

I am still so sad about Kaya.

I enjoyed it! It was nice seeing all the previous characters. I get what people are saying about the warden not singing. But sometimes, actors known for singing want parts where they don't sing at all, just to show and focus on another side of their skills.

Everything was so unrealistic but great. Teddy didn't even annoy me. So sad to see Kaya go, I hope the actor finds what she's looking for.

Wished they had gotten Molly Price to come back with the other detectives.

Long wait until fall.

While it would've been great to have Donna Lynne Champlin and Ethan Slater both sing, I can understand why they didn't. Only female inmates who were previous guest stars and murderers sang Cell Block Tango and, from what I read, it was a challenge getting the rights to perform that song from Chicago (who had to approve every word). To have the warden and a police officer also sing, the whole episode would need to be a musical with different numbers. Or they would need to do a different musical number.

For me, this is tied for being the biggest crime with having (Tony Award winner)André De Shields in the episode without having him sing.

I didn't like it either. I guess I wasn't in the mood for a musical.

I loved this episode and would have loved it to be a two-parter with another fabulous musical number in the second part.

I was impressed with how many former guest stars they were able to get.  Of course, there are a few more I would have liked to have seen, but as it was I thought it was great!

I'm wondering if the prison guard who wanted to be a police officer might be her newly minted police officer partner next season...
