S07.E04: Danny Boy, the Interview, the New Hire, and the Hanging Chad

Recommended Posts

i was talking to my husband about episode titles in shows (comparing the style and tone of titles in one show to another) and mentioned that the Conners had an episode-naming "style" and that style was "a list of things". (Which he described as "a clear sign of running out of ideas".)

There's not even an attempt at making that list sound thematic.

Harris, I can't say I blame ya for wanting to hire that guy :D. Shame the job didnt work out for him, 'cause he seemed so enthused and really needed the money, but I do like him and Harris hitting it off as they did. O.

In happier job-related topics, yay, Becky! Glad that (super awkward) interview didn't mess up her chances. I like that she's getting to work somewhere where she can do some good and help others.

I was totally expecting us to get an emotional moment with Dan this episode after all that tlak about trying to tap into that side of him, but maybe we'll see that at some point in the last two episodes. All I know is the "Danny Boy" song gave me flashbacks to high school choir :p.

Really wondering what they'll be doing with this whole Darlene/Ben/Chad thing.

Glad to see Becky have a breakthrough.

Anyone else distracted by John Goodman’s teeth? Like he’s uncomfortable with them and having difficulty speaking.

Mark and scholarships:  that was discussed ad nauseam in the previous season. Consensus is the writers don’t know what they’re doing or they just want to create idiot plots.  Remember the contrabassoon?

Whatever happened to Darlene working at the cafeteria so Mark could get cheaper tuition? Another BS scene when Dan was looking at Roseanne's medical chart. Medical facilities never release the "original" chart; only paper copies. Now most places are EMR and don't even use paper charts.

He wanted to go to the University of Chicago and she wanted a better job.

Like introvert extreme Darlene would find it hard to be home alone.  Everything about the way they're writing her this season with regard to Ben working so much is as ridiculous as what Ben is working on.  And as ridiculous as Darlene not realizing how the wife was going to take what she said.

Becky feeling like an imposter who's too old and inexperienced getting a job running a new department is supposed to feel like a win, and I want to be happy for her, but it's just one more thing that's ridiculous.  And it always drives me crazy that they've zoomed ahead and put her in grad school.

I can usually roll with this stuff better, but I guess I'm in a mood.

So stupid. We all want to go to Ivy or UofC, but we have to go where we can afford, especially if a parent sacrificed so much. That's if we can afford any college at all and not need to work right after high school for basic needs.

Mark was such a sweetie pie as a child, but grew up to be an unappreciative jerk. Worst than Darlene in the original series when she went dark; at least she still cared underneath the snark and tried to do the right things. Even Becky just ran away when they couldn't afford college and didn't turn to a life of crime.

Darlene warned him. I hope the writers have the balls so send him to prison.

I don't like this needy, thoughtless Darlene.  Darlene is way too smart not to realize how it would appear to Chad's wife.

Except this has always been The Conners version of Darlene. It's one of the things that make her so unlikable. All she ever does is make assumptions and meddle.

So far we've seen Louise once, Ben twice, Beverly Rose once, Neville once,  DJ and his family not at all, and I don't think we've seen Sean Astin's character at all this season either. The show's budget must have taken a massive hit just to get this send off, and they've had to side line some semi-regulars so they could afford Jane Lynch and Seth Green. Although if they hadn't mostly written Ben out they wouldn't need Seth Green. I hope they stick the landing next week because it will help to kill the memory of how badly the ending for the OG show sucked.

I obviously have no idea what they're planning, and I don't know if this would be considered a spoiler, so I'll hide it, but

Spoiler

I read that they don't plan to tie everything up in a neat little bow and there will be unanswered questions. Which I guess is true to life, but it doesn't make me optimistic for a particularly satisfying ending.

I don't understand why the kid couldn't be an intern AND work at the diner. Both roles have a lot of flexibility. But then if the kid was that hopeless, I'm not sure what he would have done as an intern.

This made no sense. Sure, she had life experiences, but for a leadership role? This is a noncollege grad's wet dream of what the job market 'should be."

Possibly, but no one seems concerned that he is still hacking (or interested in what exactly he is hacking) so it seems unlikely any of them could be bothered with scholarships and financial aid.

It feels like the show has been ignoring his hacking because they plan a big event with the house being raided by feds or something, just so the family can make a speech about "how unfair the system is" that "forced" Mark to break the law to go to his dream school.

A total step up from the older guy with 2 kids that kicked her out.

Of course, it would be hard to go down from that....

He seemed like a nice guy but what moron does not write the orders down, particularly during busy times, unless you have a photographic memory?

Becky looked kind of hot in the glasses.

I suppose her running the wellness department is the big finale for her story.

Speaking of which, there are two episodes next week, and that's the series.

I guess Becky got a good ending, even though it is idiotic that she would get a leadership position with her lack of experience.

I will be sad to see this show go, even though it was never very good.

I guess this will be the final goodbye for this TV family (for the love of God, please no Wacky Jackie spinoffs).

Harris, did you ever think about giving him a, ya know, an actual pad for him to write orders so he could keep the orders straight?

I've seen that before on sitcoms, most recently on "Young Sheldon" and that was a much better show than this.

Yes, me, I've posted about that before, but somehow whatever's going on there has actually changed since the first time it distracted me, and not for the better, either....🙁

He was in the first episode, the one Louise was in. I wish she was in more. It would be interesting to see her and Dan talk about the lawsuit together.

I miss Louise but since the show decided this season was going to be about Roseanne’s death, I’m fine with Louise being scarce.

That wasn't me who said that, Annber03 said it quote above. I was responding to it.

It looks like his false teeth are too large for his mouth...like they are going to come flying out of his mouth when he speaks.

I have no idea what John Goodman's dental records are, but you would think someone with his money would have something like implants instead of false teeth.  I was thinking a lot of actors have veneers, and those can be a little oversized.  Maybe that's an issue for him.

Maybe the choice is for “Dan Conner” to have teeth that reflect his lack of money for the past 70 years?

As someone else has already said, they are not the same on The Righteous Gemstones so it is very doubtful these are his real false teeth/veneers etc. & more than likely just for the sake of this show.

Yeah, he probably could have gone to U Chicago for free in real life.

At the beginning of this season she said she got a promotion, and in this episode she said she's a manager. But I don't know what "lunch lady" could be promoted to. Cafeteria manager maybe?

Darlene's boss, who ran the cafeteria, died.  Darlene got that job. That would still come with the tuition discount available to relatives of employees if Mark had stayed at that school.  Which should have been a safety school for him, because despite Darlene being a manager at the company with the assembly line before she quit to be a cafeteria worker, numerous better schools would have offered him full or almost full scholarships.

Could they have gotten any stupider writing than when Darlene was trying to ask Jane Lynch about hacking?

Speaking of Jane Lynch, Dan's deposition would neither be filmed (just transcribed) or heard by the jury unless he contradicted himself at trial.  So trying to get him to be emotional for a deposition (which takes place in a conference room with only the attorneys and parties to the suit present) isn't particularly important.  I suppose if he broke down convincingly, the defendant's attorney might think he'd move the jury and therefore would be more likely to offer a large settlement.  And his own attorney certainly wants him to display emotion if the case goes to trial.  But the deposition is not the place for excess emotion. The deposition transcript will just reflect the words.

Since when did Dan have three living uncles? Did I hear that right?

Supposedly years ago, he had 3 old uncles.  They'd have been dead for a while, presumably.

Weird scene at the Conner residence: It looked like Ben ran in, grabbed an empty Tupperware container, and ran out.  Since Darlene didn't know he was coming home to grab dinner, and Harris certainly didn't stuff it with spaghetti or salad, how would there have been any food in it?
