AnimeMania February 23 Share February 23 S01.E01 The Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty, live, love, work and play in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington D.C. Premiere Date: February 24, 2025 CBS 2pm 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8588916
JudyObscure February 24 Share February 24 So far I like Anita, the matriarch, her style and her acting. Dani seems too young to have a 17 year-old and she might have hurt that kitchen with those mugs! Nicole is a perfect doctor, but seems sad? Is there a reason? Halie has a nerve expecting them to still be friends. (That was a good scene.) Samantha is a realtor? Vernon Dupree, loves his family. His grandson is a politician? Maybe Naomi and the detective will just stay in bed for the whole series. Oh no! Don't get Dani to move on, I was looking forward to her making the cheaters pay! Ah! Dani's rage is back and she looks amazing in that red dress. The whole family lined up for the dirty looks. I like the blonde at the bar with her, "welcome to Fairmont." 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589886
Badsamaritan February 24 Share February 24 Not the whole Dupree family mean mugging Haley on the way out lol! I don't blame them though, like Dani said, she coulda chose any where else to have her wedding and live, but they choosing Fairmont on purpose. That slap was deserved and I hope Dani gets to slap the taste out of Bill's mouth too. Solid first episode. I'm hooked. 11 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589893
michelec February 24 Share February 24 I enjoyed it. Especially how they weaved in the bits of Black culture and the Civil Rights Movement with the typical soap fare. Gonna take me a minute to get everyone straight, but there was enough exposition that it shouldn't be too difficult. And Tamara's silver locks, so envious. Only a few years younger than her and I can only manage salt and pepper LOL. 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589906
drivethroo February 24 Share February 24 This was a great episode! The first 10 minutes were shaky and stiff but that's to be expected: Nicole feels some type of way towards Dani, who has been chaotic her entire life. Bill is no good, shady and for the streets. He didn't make those charges go away for free and the poor father seeking help is now in a world of trouble but doesn't know it. Hayley needs to stop the poor innocent doe routine. She saw Bill, she befriended Naomi, she got Bill. The end. LOL at the Dupree family giving Hayley the stank faces one by one as she recovered from getting the Sonic rings knocked out of her. I felt the episode started instantly getting better with Vernon & his grandson inside the shop and the constituent coming over to greet them. The White couple is too good to be true. She'll be sleeping with the photographer soon. LOL LOL LOL @ at the bar staff pretending to do their work while catching the fight at the same time. LMAO @ Karen from Real Housewives of Potomac perched at the bar in the middle of the day, welcoming Hayley to the neighborhood after she got knocked out. 2 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589913
AnimeMania February 24 Share February 24 The only thing I took away from the first episode is how did they eat those dry a-- waffles without any syrup. Also everything seemed extremely bright for everyone waking up to go to work. I remember my commutes to work being much darker. VanillaBeanne February 24 Share February 24 Yeah, I liked it. Looking forward to the next couple of episodes. Lucky for the show it follows the horribly written and plotted Bold and the Beautiful, which today featured scenes of a husband telling his wife about his love child/cousin with his former lover/adoptive aunt. 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589918
Irlandesa February 24 Share February 24 I kind of wish the first episode had a bit more of a hook. Like I believe Santa Barbara opened on a murder. This episode felt like it had a lot of exposition. I also think there were perhaps too many coupled people. Where is that one "will they won't they but maybe clearly destined to be together couple?" Maybe that's Nurse Ashley and the photographer. She seems okay but her husband/boyfriend is bland as heck. I love soapy twists but I also love couples. The end was pretty great, though. And as much as I hate Bill already, he's definitely going to propel things going forward with his shadiness. I'm looking forward to meeting Martin (the grandson) and Nicole's husbands. 6 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589950
Desperado February 24 Share February 24 I was afraid I would find the acting too over the top, but I really liked it. The sets are varied and look good (love that kitchen!) except for the blandest hospital set ever. Speaking of bland, the nurse and her husband. I hope they get interesting soon. I knew I would love Tamara but I really like the granddaughters and their outfits (yes, I’m shallow about fashion). Also the real estate agent screwing the whole family over to get that big commission. 🤣 2 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589963
ShadowHunter February 24 Share February 24 I definitely will watch the first episode again because I was so happy and distracted seeing multiple sets lol. Seeing more extras in the background as well was so nice. We opened on licensed music and I cheered like the team won the big game lol. The fashions were pretty good as well. I will need a few more episodes to really see who I like and don't like. I agree we have a lot of couples already. Still this is supposed to be Love in the Afternoon so that is a good thing. 6 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8589982
JAYJAY1979 February 24 Share February 24 Already the sister tension between Nicole and Dani interests me..and will be curious to see how mom and dad contributed to that. Nicole boasting on her perfect marriage is foreshadowing 101...wonder if hubby is on the DL. Dani's initial arc I predict will be her moving past the betrayal and on with her life. And maybe might be a helping hand to Nicole..or maybe will take delight if Nicole has any unhappiness. 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590037
Melgaypet February 24 Share February 24 (edited) Okay, so a lot to like here! In no particular order: The clothes, especially on the Dupree ladies, were amazing. Hayley: sincere (and thus too stupid to live) or does she have a game? Karla Mosely: the one to watch. She commands the screen. Clunky exposition dialogue abounds. Two pros handle it perfectly: Tamara Tunie and Daphnee Duplaix. One pro and one newcomer trying to keep up: Clifton Davis and the grandson who speaks in platitudes. I hope he show some different shades soon. Doing the best they can: Nurse Ashley and her boring (sorry) boyfriend. Also, all that syrupy talk between Nurse Ashley and Boring Boy spell doom. How soon before she's knocking boots with the photographer? Neither Dani or Nicole look old enough for grown children, but that's soaps for you. Dani's daughter is very pretty and very green. I don't mean that harshly, but I hope some scenes face to face with Mosely will perk her up. Bill is obviously terrible and I think I might love to hate him. That poor father is going to regret being in his debt, clearly. The couple having sex in the beginning were fine. More chemistry than Nurse Ashley and her vanilla boy, at any rate. I'm interested in Nicole. Dani kept taking shots at her "perfect" life and marriage, which can't bode well. And DD was working some subtle facial expressions that hinted at some turmoil. Tamara Tunie: perfection, no notes. Edited February 24 by Melgaypet 8 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590040

Joimiaroxeu February 24 Share February 24 Premiere starting off with some classic 70s R&B. Let's go! Hope that was faux fur Anita was wearing. Sounds like Dani's ex-husband Bill is a shameless social climber. Oy, Derrick the firefighter might want to get some sun. Or a spray tan. A character named Chelsea. I didn't need that nod to Y&R, lol. Didn't need the name-check of the K Klan either. It was offhandedly mentioned that Anita has an EGOT. I think that would explain a lot about her demeanor: always expecting applause. Whee, Jerome the mâitre d' must know all the good Fairmont Crest gossip! The Dupree women talked to each other like he wasn't even there. I guess Vanessa is the one who'll smile as she tells people about themselves. I like her already. Clifton Davis as Vernon Dupree, bringing the gravitas as a family patriarch, a former US senator, and a hero of the Civil Rights Era. Bravo. Dani's big sis Nicole is kind of a nag, ha ha. She might be right about Dani letting Bill keep living inside her head though. Apparently Bill is a fixer as well as a criminal defense attorney. Okay. He might turn out to be kinda shady professionally as well as personally. Ashley the nurse. She's a bit of a cipher to me so far. Dani got to deliver a Soap Opera 101 slap in the first episode. I just wish the moment hadn't already been spoiled in all the promos. Yays: fabulous hair, wardrobe, and sets. Various skin tones and body types. Simple character names. Nays: too many characters introduced in the premiere. I think at least half of them could've waited until tomorrow and the rest of the week. Too many boudoir scenes too soon since we barely know the characters' names and relationships yet. 7 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590052

Hopefully after the intro, it will tone down and settle down a little. Today was over the top with Dani smashing the mugs and then bitch slapping Haylie. It was well deserved but a lot all in one episode. And the realtor with her hot pink suit and silver 70s platform shoes? Barbie’s got nothing on this one lol! 26 minutes ago, Melgaypet said: Dani's daughter is very pretty and very green This is her very first acting job. Rodney February 25 Share February 25 3 minutes ago, Crashcourse said: I liked this, but there seemed to be more commercials than in Y&R and B&B. That's what I noticed, too. The scenes felt shorter than both shows, too. That said, I, too, enjoyed so much of this. I liked pretty much all of the Duprees. Tamara is divine as Anita, and she already seems to sparkle with Vernon. I like the hints of tension between Dani and Nicole, yet at the same time, I appreciate that Nicole still had her back in trying to help her move on. Need more time on Chelsea, Naomi, and Kat, but they all seem likable. Valerie looks like she'll be good fun to watch. Ashley is totally going to cheat on her hot (but dull) boyfriend. Bill is clearly the inaugural villain of this show, which is cool, since soaps are lacking black villains (or, really, any villains of color). The last ones that we had were T.R. Coates and Whitley King, both on Days of our Lives. Until she shows hints to the contrary, I do think that Hayley is genuine in her remorse at causing the hurt that she did to the family. But it doesn't change that they're not obligated to forgive her for it unless she really goes out of her way to show her remorse. The shared glares at her, one after the other, were awesome. It showed me that the Duprees will always have a united front against those who hurt one of their own, and I am living for it! Good first episode. Shame we didn't see Mike Manning today. But I'm excited to see him tomorrow. 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590123
ByaNose February 25 Share February 25 The weird thing I noticed soap wise was their fade to black. They didn’t really fade to black with a long dramatic pause & state fade out. It was more the screen goes black. I thought my tv was going out the first two times. LOL!!! Maybe, it’s just me who thinks that. I’m glad the first episode is in the can & they can get to business and show us stuff we haven’t seen yet. Overall, it looks very grande. It reminded me of Y&R (the Bell years) which like prime time when it first started in 1973. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590146
ShadowHunter February 25 Share February 25 Honestly Dani and Hayley might be better off without Billy. He was described as a cheater with multiple woman. Ashley the nurse who is with Derek who said the cursed words "I'll never love or want another man as much as you" well I assume maybe her and the guy who takes pictures might start something. I forgot what his name was when he was talking to her at the hospital. I do prefer Female centered love triangles as opposed to male ones. 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590174

And here's my thought below on the first episode....I'm just going to copy & paste them on here: I loved this first episode, what an incredible start! Just as I suspected I love Anita so far she’s my top favorite character and Tamara is of course amazing as usual and giving it her all to this role like I knew she would! I can’t wait to see more Anita and about her past. This role fits her! They were right this character and role was made for her and I can’t imagine anyone else playing Anita ❤️ I’m also so glad Tamara’s front and center in this soap opera this time around because it gives her room to really shine! Husband Vernon is great so far! Love him and I love Anita & Vernon as a couple so far as well. Dani I agree with a few others on here that she’s going to be a trouble maker which I don’t know if I’ll like or not, but we’ll see Bill is a jerk for cheating and Hayley deserved that slap from Dani for sure. I really like Vanessa so far as well. I like Ashley she and…Andre I think it is have chemistry with each other at the hospital even though I know she’s married to Derek, but Andre was flirting with her so I agree with a few others that they may have an affair, but who knows this is soap land so anything could happen. I think it’s going to take me a bit to get down everyone’s names and whose who at least with the supporting cast anyway, but I’m mainly here for Tamara so I’m mostly going be to discussing Anita full force with a sprinkling some of the others of course that I start to like or will like as the show goes on, but Anita’s character will be number one discussion for me. Jenxee February 25 Share February 25 I really liked it. This is my first time watching a soap from the very beginning which I thought was pretty cool. I loved how the family had each others backs. Ashley seemed so far removed from the rest of the show, but I’m sure we’ll see her interact with Nicole since she’s a doctor and on IMDB I see there’ll be more hospital related characters. Bill is shady as hell, and I’m here for it! looking forward to tomorrows ep. 6 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590315
ByaNose February 25 Share February 25 Good first episode. A lot of I’m your mother, father, grandfather, grandson stuff but I understand why. LOL!!! By Friday it will be all perfectly normal. The sets were bright and airy. I’m looking forward to see stuff that hasn’t been previewed. I think this will show a little of what we’ve seen but next week it will be entirely all new. Karla Mosley was really front and center today. You can tell that MJV had a POV of Danni and how she wanted to write it. Apparently, she wrote it with Karla in mind. At first, I thought the two young girls were her daughters but then it was the older one who was her daughter. I didn’t necessarily buy that casting but I’m sure it will be fine. I am curious if there is going to be some big murder or cliffhanger on Friday. Monday was a great setup so I’m curious what the Big Bang will be. Time will tell. Also, I guess BTG didn’t get the memo about music rights. LOL!!! They said, we have money to burn and we want a hit pop/r&b song and we want it now!!!! LOL!!!!! Congratulation’s to Beyond The Gates. Welcome to the (soap) neighborhood. 10 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590399

Haven February 25 Share February 25 (edited) The pilot episode was just fine, nothing to really move the needle and I feel like that's what they really need to survive in this environment. It can't just be the same old tropes we get on the other 4 soaps. Obviously having a Black central family distinguishes them but they need something more. All the soaps seem to revolve around wealthy families, the Duprees are more of the same. Also is it just me or does the cast seem very female-heavy? Of the entire Dupree clan there are only two men (grandfather and grandson) to the six women. Their ages are also all out of whack. Dani is supposed to have married at 19 thirty years so she's 49. It's reasonable for the character to have daughters in their 20s but the problem is that the actress is 43 and looks younger. Her daughters look like her sisters. It's even worse with Nicole and her son. Another thing that caught my eye: there are no children at all. The youngest character is mid-20s. Is that a soap first? There are usually teens at least. I assumed that was the case with Dani's younger daughter but nope, she's past college age. I assumed that was the case with Dani's younger daughter but nope, she's past college age. I think folks are gonna have to let some of the character ages go. There's a saying in our community - Black don't crack - so I'm ok with the children and grandchildren of Anita and Vernon looking younger than their in-show ages. I mean, look at their parents, they inherited some really great genes plus they're all moisturized to the gods lol. I like that the cast is female heavy, traditionally soaps were marketed towards women. But somehow, soaps like GH have pivoted to make the men the stars (looking at the geriatric gummy bear mobsters) and the women all revolve around them. So for me, it's good to see. I hope BTG's ratings beat the brakes off GH. Sorry to any fans but that show is awful and they'll never get rid of Frank unless ratings drop to the pits of Hell. There were a lot of commercials, but they need to pay for those sets, wardrobes, and exterior shots. Hopefully they'll be able to integrate some sponsors into the show and maybe cut back on those. But it is absolutely because somebody needs to pay for the country club extras. 🤷🏽♀️ I am waiting on the Long Lost Problem Child of Civil rights era Vernon. Y'all know there's gonna be one. 👀 6 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590555
DearEvette February 25 Share February 25 (edited) Finally got a chance to watch. What I liked: The opening scene with 'Best of My Love' blasting. Set quite the tone! Tamara Tunie's hair. It is glorious. Actually all the actresses hair. The sets. Dani's red dress. The grounding of the family's prestige in the civil rights movement and Anita probably being somewhat of a Diana Ross analogue. Pretty much everything Clifton Davis. The scene with the entire family sitting on the couch and Vernon talking about his love for his wife and hyping up the family. The entire family pausing one by one to give an 'Oh well, thems the breaks' stare down to Hayley before calmly walking off. LOL. The Realtor giving her news (she did a solid to her friend) but getting the hell out of Dodge. What I didn't like so much: The expositiony dialogue. Necessary I suppose, but belabored. The social media model and her nameless cousin. I am hoping they grow on me but they just feel vapid right now. The Nurse. Talk about a needle scratch. LOL. But... the photographer husband's dialogue with her felt awfully...flirty. I just got a weird vibe there. 2 hours ago, Haven said: Another thing that caught my eye: there are no children at all. janeyjay February 25 Share February 25 I was a longtime As The World Turns viewer and loved Tamara Tunie's role as Jessica. It's so fun to see her back on a soap after all these years as the matriarch of a big anchor family. And Clifton Davis is a worthy partner for her and he has aged WELL. Hoping we get more storylines going in addition to the big old "Dani's ex is a big fat cheater and he and his new-to-be wife are giving the ick to everyone in the community." 2 1 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590572

I think my favorite character so far is the male bartender that was blatantly eavesdropping on the Dani and Hayley fight. He was living for it! I actually enjoyed that scene the most because everyone at the bar was intently listening. Usually on soaps when there is a public fight, maybe one or two people glance over, look surprised, then go back to their conversations. 6 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590622

The soaps today have some bad younger sets and hopefully this show does a better job with it. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590749

KittyQ February 25 Share February 25 Watched S01.E01 - for me, this was pretty good. I liked how smoothly most of the actors delivered their expository lines, without sounding like they were reading bullet points. Tamara Tunie is great, as always. She has tons of experience in all kinds of vehicles, and it shows. Everyone else is so far at least keeping up, although the nurse and boyfriend could easily have been duplicated from GH's Joss and (the late) Dex. Classic bitch slap at the end, although I though Hayley could have (maybe should have) responded with a little more defiance. Just like most soap, this is filled with people who somehow get up, get dressed, and so out for a fabulous breakfast, which is pretty far from my personal experience; they must have snagged a Pop Tart somewhere! 4 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590782
JudyObscure February 25 Share February 25 Interesting start to episode 2, Vernon says he doesn't condone violence but in Dani's case it was okay, Then Anita doesn't condone violence but she understands why Dani needed to do that, and Nicole thought it was funny and she and her husband thought Hayley deserved it. I was starting to get flashbacks of Will Smith smacking Chris Rock and getting a standing ovation for it. All these adoring accolades! Everyone who works for Nicole had to stop and sing her praises then her husband does it, then we go to the hospital and Ashley gets a bunch of people talking about how awesome she is followed by Ashley's mother getting the sainted single mother oration. I'm ready for some imperfect people. Maybe head nurse at the hospital will be trouble for Ashley! Dani in those jewel tones is so stunning! 1 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590783
Rodney February 25 Share February 25 So we're already following the classic soap formula of some characters appearing some days and others appearing on other days. Ah, so Andre and Ashley were kind of working toward something before she met and fell for Derek. Who did Bill think that he was, asking for the family to attend his and Hayley's wedding? Vernon was right to reject him. But that little threat at the end was not it. So Nicole seems solid in her marriage with Ted, after all. But Eva's mother seems like she'll be trouble. And Eva herself seems to be all in on that trouble. On the other hand, Eva does seem to be a good, supportive friend to Ashley. Awwww. Andre's dad is dead. Wonder how he died? So the grandson is gay with a husband, played by Mike Manning! Seems that the actor is allergic to kissing another man, though. Wonder what dreams he's having, and why? Dani storming in with the golf club at the end?! Holy shit! I can't wait to see where that goes tomorrow! Good second episode. Only thing I'd say is that they need to structure how the storylines are presented in each episode. I guess that I'm spoiled by years of seeing certain storylines appear on some days and other storylines on other days, and each one presented at least once per act. BTG seems a bit . . . scattershot in how they present each storyline. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590786

None of the Black actors ran to Chris Rock's aid and that should tell you all you need to know about Chris Rock. Vernon & Anita are united in protecting Martin. What did he do? Martin's husband is going to get tired of being his do-boy. I'm getting the feeling Hayley isn't some conniving homewrecker, that she's an useful idiot in Bill's game. I need Dani's pantsuit (and the figure to wear it). 5 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590801
Badsamaritan February 25 Share February 25 Whew! Bill and Hayley might not have guests at their wedding but they damn sure have the audacity. I liked Martin saying sometimes folks need to be popped in the mouth because chile, I got a whole ass list. So what do we think Martin did that Anita and Vernon need to protect him at all costs? And, why do I feel like Bill needs to worry more about Anita than Vernon? Vernon may be nonviolent but something tells me our beloved matriarch is not above snatching somebody's balls off and wearing them to the country club as earrings. 🤷🏽♀️ 9 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590824

Seems that the actor is allergic to kissing another man, though. I doubt the lack of kissing is an acting choice. It'd be kind of silly to hire an actor to be the gay grandson of the main family who didn't want to kiss other men. And given Mike Manning is an out bi man married to another man, I doubt he'd be against it either. My guess is they're trying to play it conservatively, at least in the beginning. It's a bummer. But Martin is getting a little more interesting. It sounds like his family rallied around him because of something he did in his past. And from the conversation about nightmares, it doesn't sound like his husband knows about it. 1 hour ago, Rodney said: Only thing I'd say is that they need to structure how the storylines are presented in each episode. I think they're trying to get face time for all of the characters as soon as possible which is leading to this bit of slapshod storytelling. It is a bit annoying that it feels like the first half of both episodes are so exposition heavy and things only finally start happening later in the episode. I wish they'd do more inference exposition. For instance, Bill threatening Vernon wasn't explicit about the past but the threat itself opened up a lot of speculation. I get that they want to make it easy for people to pick up on the show but they're also making it easy to feel impatient with the show when the first week should be more explosive. 1 hour ago, drivethroo said: I'm getting the feeling Hayley isn't some conniving homewrecker, that she's an useful idiot in Bill's game. Desperado February 25 Share February 25 Yeah, I wish the cast had graphics of their names below because my brain is too old to remember 20 people and their familial links in a few episodes. 🤣 I’m happy to read the character info here, it’ll help greatly. 7 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151881-beyond-the-gates-daily-episode-discussion/#findComment-8590860
