It's about time Beyonce won Album of the Year. I really enjoyed Cowboy Carter and I am not a fan of country music. At least not mainstream country music. I always feel like I learn when I listen to many of Beyonce's albums. Some of the musicians that she highlighted on her album like Tanner Addell, Reyna Roberts and others I have been listening to.

I am pleased with Kendrick Lamar's wins in the Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories as well. I really would have been pleased with any of the winners in those categories beside Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift.

I am thrilled about Beyonce and Kendrick winning.

Someone somewhere said Cowboy Carter isn't a country album it is a COUNTRY album.  And I understand that.  The album is so layered and I like how it takes the conceit of changing a radio dial to take a tour of different genres. Also her voice on it is insane!

Meanwhile a rap dis song winning both Record and Song of the Year is unprecedented. I am a little gobsmacked, tbh. It is a great song though, and Kendrick is really intelligent and clever in his writing. I winced a little at the crowd singing along to the 'A-minorrrrr' line.  Yikes., Drake is still taking the L's.

You must have missed it. He was in the midst of all of the other BNA nominees. He sounded great - all of the BNA nominees sounded wonderful…it was a tough category. 
 

I saw him perform last year after a Washington nationals game. He sounded exactly like he does on the radio… Very strong voice.

I was really expecting a better tribute to Quincy Jones. Like, I don't know, a medley of songs? And while there was a tribute, I fully expected to see him in the In Memoriam. Or did I blink and miss him?

Since Diana Ross was also there, it would have been nice to have her sing with Stevie, the few lines from "We Are the World" and anyone else who was involved in that, that attended the Grammys. Or were they not asked? Refused?

I did snicker at Stevie correcting that he did NOT suggest "Swahili" as Lionel stated, but in the making of, I did hear him say "Swahili" though!

Adore Trevor as always.

Oh! And I loved Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga's rendition of "California Dreamin'" so much it gave me goosebumps.

Now, that song always does, so I don't know if it was them singing it or not, because DAMN STRAIGHT, I pulled it up when I couldn't sleep last night and listened to it four times! As well as The Beach Boys' cover of it!

My memory is fuzzy, but I could have SWORN that there's a version out there where just Michelle Phillips sang it? I have this image in my mind-her hair bleached blonde with a flower in it? Of course, I was a tween/teen, so maybe I imagined it?

I love Jose Feliciano's cover (the remastered version with the full orchestration). The spanish guitar and his voice makes it so lilting and lovely.

I forgot to mention how happy I am for Doechii.  She is having a well deserved moment. She is so creative and and such a breath of fresh air in female rap.

I'm not a fan of Bey but other artists especially country music artists being salty about Beyonce winning can go kick rocks.  Country music has had/has black artists (even if they don't want to acknowledge that).  And since Cowboy Carter was pretty much shut out of all the actual country music awards, this album can have it's awards moment.

I don't know how many artists have to say that they don't have to be stuck in one genre.  Even most people who aren't musicians have heard and liked other genres of music so the idea that a professional wouldn't also like/been influenced by other genres and want to explore them is ridiculous.

I did enjoy all the best new artist performances.  I'd seen Raye before and was glad to see her get an even bigger audience.

What the heck is Shakira's exercise routine because, wow!

I do agree it would be great to see other genres acknowledged with awards being presented or even performances but the academy seems to have decided to put on a big concert and concentrate on the more pop aspects of music.

It was the group The Mamas and the Papas that Michelle Phillip's was in, and theirs was the first version of California Dreamin' that I heard.

I know that this song originally was by the Mamas and the Papas. What I'm saying is, I seem to recall seeing some video where Michelle redid the song and sang all the lyrics, or something. See my original comment where I stated I listened to the original four times after the Grammys on YouTube.

I'm not a fan of rap music but I'd heard a lot about Kendrick Lamar and Not Like Us because of the mess with Drake.  So, just out of curiosity to see what all the hype was about, I saw the video on YouTube.  I couldn't believe the absolute trash I heard--especially the constant use of N-word (yeah, I know it's common in rap music).   And my mind was blown when it won those Grammys.   Also, since he's performing at the Super Bowl, how is that going to work when he sings that song?  Will they bleep out half of the "lyrics"?

Just because you don't understand what you heard, doesn't mean it is trash.  It is fine to dislike it, but to call it trash is an utter dismissal of the history and forms of the genre.  Putting aside the use of the 'N' word, the song is done in the traditional of a rap battle, which is baked into the bones of rap itself.  It has its underpinnings in clever word play, insults and double entendre references.

NLU is rife with all of that.  Every bar is sometimes a double and triple entendre. Kendrick does not waste a word. The 'A-minor' line references three different things at once. Even the beat itself is a jibe. And in all that he even inserted a history lesson about Atlanta.

This particular song does not exist in a vacuum. And it is richer for knowing how it came about which is probably part of the appreciation by the voting members.

I hated everything I heard and saw about the song, and that's why I call it trash.  That's the word I'm sticking with, and that's my opinion.   I don't care about the "genre" either.  I've heard rap songs before.  I understand word play, insults, double entendre, rap battles, but I still don't like the songs--especially this one.  

Fine if you like it.  I don't.

I have a question (which I suppose I could look up if I weren't totally lazy) - is there any "official" videos to go with the songs on Cowboy Carter?  The only video I've seen (and that they used last night) is the video from the Christmas day football game.  That's the video they're also using on the news.  It's great video and I totally enjoyed the halftime show, but it seems odd that there is no "official" video being used.

I’m a little surprised they handed Beyoncé that award after her husband threw his little fit last year in his speech whining about how his poor put upon wife never wins. I was hoping they were going to ban her from winning it forever after that stunt. Money talks, I guess.

Also, she can lose me with dragging her nepo baby around everywhere and trying to make her happen.

Considering that there have been accusations linking her and her husband to what Diddy has been accused of, I'm a little surprised but not really.  As for their daughter, no worse than Will Smith and his kids.

The telecast was seen by over 15 million viewers. I don't know if that's more or less than previous years. Plus, they raised over $9 million for charitable activities

The only accusations, if you can call them that, is that they went to his parties.  So did a lot of other celebrities.  The bigger surprise would be people back in the day not partying with a big name celebrity.

I haven't watched the Grammys in years, but have they always been that boring?  And given away so few awards?  But hey, at least I no longer have to read rants by Beyonce fans about how she's never won Album of the Year; too bad it was for such a mediocre album.

Same with the Rolling Stones winning Best Rock Album.  There were some really great albums nominated and they gave it to the worst one possible.

The AI was used to remove background noise and isolate John's voice from an old demo.  Nothing wrong with that.  I don't care how it was done--it's a fantastic song, beautifully done, and I love the video as well.  We'll just have to agree to disagree.

We will, because I thought it was a crappy song no matter how they did it.  I will confess to not being much of a Beatles fan to begin with, though.

I do wish more awards had been given out on the show, but the ceremony was already long enough.  i know that every year they have to make choices what awards to show beyond "the big ones."

the problem with the AI/Beatles song is that it was such a gimme.  Who wasn't going to give the award to the Beatles?  It just wasn't fair to the other nominees.  tbh, i'm almost surprised the Beatles didn't win the other award in which they were nominated.  I'm not a Rolling Stones fan, so i also thought that award was ill suited.
