I have always thought (and said here) that it isn't just being primaried. "They" can make life miserable for people in a lot of different ways.  And, not to rehash Kathy Griffin's obvious tasteless photo, she didn't commit any crimes except for poor taste and after all was said and done but she was harassed for years just to torment her.  Don't want to rehash that argument but it is what will happen to dissenters, IMO.

This is what I do. As much as I want to be out in the streets protesting, I know my limits and my talents. I'm a librarian in a small but progressive town in the South. I cannot be vocal about every issue, but I can silently resist. Not everyone can be an out and proud leftist. I also refuse to let perfect be the enemy of good. I boycott where I can (Chic-Fil-A, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart) and keep my views to myself so that I can better assist the marginalized members of my community.

And people didn't call for changing those product and team names because they were big egotists that had to push to have their way on things that were insignificant. No, they called for those changes because the images were implying a condoning of racist stereotypes. Obviously the right doesn't consider the feelings of the people hurt by those images valid or worth protecting because they see the name changes as just a power play by the left to make them defer to the feelings of people who they see as beneath them and are "getting too big for their britches". So they will be against those changes yet support changes by a maniac who wants everyone at each other's throats for his own gain. Even that is more acceptable to them than worrying about the feelings of some "uppity" minorities!

And BTW, more in this vein but even more obvious is Pete Hegseth's move to rename Ft. Liberty back to Ft. Bragg, only this time after some decorated private in WWII named Bragg, not the confederate leader whose name was removed from the fort under the Biden administration. If that's not blatantly thumbing your nose at Black people I don't know what is. And I don't care what ridiculous explanations were given to justify changing it back to Bragg in an attempt to sanitize the real reason. Republicans either need to stop justifying shit like this with lame excuses like honoring some private with the name Bragg that they previously didn't give 2 craps about or WAKE UP. Preferably both.

Exactly, and that's a dangerous thought. Obviously a lot of people didn't have the kind of education I had where we students learned about WWII and were cautioned against falling for this type of cultish devotion to a leader. There may be another Target lawsuit but not from the shareholders.

This is the kind of thing that the world doesn't need to know.  You don't need to justify to anyone except your spouse really the things you do.  No one would know this or should know this except your partner/spouse so don't tell people.  If you don't want anyone to comment on an area of your life, then just don't talk about it or learn phrases like oh really, that's interesting, that's something to think about that are neutral if someone brings something up you don't want to discuss. I always feel like I need to justify what I do.  I think it stems from being questioned so much when I was younger, especially from immigrant relatives or international relatives who don't quite seem to understand me or find my Canadian/western ways offensive to my heritage.

I have a friend who feels the need to apologize for everything.  Her background has some similarities to yours.  You can change your attitude and behavior if you want to I tell her.  Begin with little things.  You don't have to spend the rest of your life catering to your childhood.  That may sound harsh, but try to hear it as kindly thoughts from someone who wishes better for you.  Figure out what your rights are and only give the relatives a say if it's really necessary otherwise find a way like the neutral comments or simply not responding to shut it down.  I doubt it's ever really necessary.

Maybe in the grand scheme of things what we're doing won't make much difference (although I am reading that our decisions are impacting on the US economy in some areas so yay for that) but they are giving many of us some feeling of control over a situation that is spiraling out of control.

I would have said pretty much what others have said already. I get it but you can't let those people live rent free in your head. I did it myself when I was young, but in my case it was the judgment of my mother in law, who was very much stuck in the 1950s when it came to her values about everything, especially women. Mind you, I was raised by a mother that even today would be considered quite progressive that way. And here was my MIL issuing judgment from on high because I worked a full time job, went to grad. school and was an independent woman. She thought women should stay home, clean house all day and have babies. I could never please her.

She was judgmental with everyone, though, even my husband. I admit I was sensitive and wanted her to like me so it was quite upsetting that she would reject me like that. But I eventually got fed up with her behavior and didn't GAF after a while. There was no pleasing her so I had to give up trying and stick up for myself. And I don't regret it one bit. It's sad but it was her problem, not mine. And afterward I felt much better not blaming myself for it and letting her make me feel like I had to defend myself. I did nothing wrong and my lifestyle works for me. I hope you can get to that point too.

Just to add, we just had the Invictus Games here in Canada and the interaction between the American and Canadian teams was awesome.  There was a very determined effort made to keep Trump out of the picture and to stress the friendship that has always existed between our countries, especially when it comes to the military.

Their QB is at the very least MAGA adjacent since he is married to someone who has posted/liked posts praising Trump. And Travis as he has become more famous has moved more center to appeal to more people.

Supposedly Trump only has the authority to change the name for the U.S. but not for the rest of the world which is why their maps can continue to show the old name. But thank you so much for the confirmation that most registered voters don't approve of the change, including some Republicans. I consider that a win of sorts.

That's in line with the numbers of Trump supporters that actually believe he's doing something positive.  70 to 75% of the US is being dragged around by 25 to 30% of the adults in the country. It's mind boggling faced that way.

This is a hilarious (somewhat exaggerated, but still kind of real) clip from a show called Little Italy, Los Angeles (I've never heard of it) that has been floating around social media.  It's an example of what I've faced in diversity groups in the past.  The overcorrection is real.
